On an Android phone, open Gemini over the app or webpage showing the item, use a screen action such as Ask about…, and ask a precise identification question. Then use Gemini’s shopping features to compare the exact products it finds. This two-stage process is more reliable than treating one visual result as proof of a model number or the lowest available price.
Gemini can use screen context, show product details and buying links, and answer follow-up questions in supported shopping contexts. Availability depends on your account, age, activity settings, location, merchants and the products involved. Always verify the exact variant, merchant, shipping, returns and current price before buying.
What Gemini’s screen overlay can do
The Gemini mobile app can open on top of another Android app. When it is active over a webpage, video, image or document, it may use what is visible on the screen as context. Google’s mobile-app instructions describe opening Gemini with a voice command such as “Hey Google” or by touch, including a long press of the power button on supported device configurations.

Ask about… lets you ask a question about the visible content. Other screen actions can automatically submit the on-screen information or file when you tap them. That distinction matters: you should understand when content is being sent for processing rather than assuming Gemini is only reading a local preview.

The overlay is the identification step. Gemini’s separate shopping capability can then help discover products, compare options and display product cards, reviews, specifications, prices, buying options and direct links. Google says this shopping experience uses information from its Shopping Graph, but it does not promise that every arbitrary image will be identified correctly or that every comparison is a complete, live price check.
Check eligibility before you start
Shopping help in Gemini has conditions that are easy to overlook. Google’s current shopping guidance for Android phones and tablets lists the following requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You need a personal Google Account. Work, school and supervised accounts are not included in the documented shopping experience.
- Keep Activity must be enabled.
- You must use a supported Gemini surface: the Gemini mobile app, Gemini on the web or Gemini in Chrome.
- The merchant and product must be eligible. Products that require identity verification, such as alcohol or tobacco, are restricted, as are certain digital goods that require customization or special delivery.
- Country and language availability varies by platform and localized version. Check Google’s current eligibility information for your location instead of relying on a list copied from another country.
These requirements affect the shopping comparison stage. The ability to open the Gemini overlay and ask about visible content can vary separately with your phone model, Android build, account configuration and enabled settings.

Confirm the relevant screen settings
Open Gemini’s settings and look for the controls that allow screen context. Google’s help refers to Use text from screen and Use screenshot; turn on the option that matches the information you want Gemini to interpret. Labels and their location can differ by device configuration, so use the wording shown in your current Gemini app.
If a setting is unavailable, update the Gemini app and Android system software where your device supports updates, then check again. An unavailable toggle can also indicate that the account, language, device or app version does not support that screen action.

Choose a clear source image
Identification works best when the product is large enough to see and the label, logo, model code or distinctive controls are not covered. Pause a video on a sharp frame, expand a product photograph, or scroll until the relevant text is visible. If the screen contains several products, plan to ask about one item at a time so Gemini does not confuse a background object with the item you mean.
Identify a product from the Android overlay
1. Open Gemini without leaving the current app
- Open the app, webpage, video or file containing the product.
- Activate Gemini with “Hey Google” or the touch shortcut available on your phone, such as a long press of the power button.
- Wait for the overlay to appear over the current content. Do not switch apps; the point of the overlay is to preserve the screen context.
Google documents the general mobile workflow in Get started with the Gemini mobile app. Exact activation gestures are device-dependent, so the power-button example is not a universal requirement.
2. Use the available screen action
Look for a suggestion such as Ask about…. Tap it, then enter your question. Google’s screen-actions documentation explains that tapping a screen-action suggestion can upload the on-screen information or file as context. All screen actions other than Ask about… automatically submit the content when tapped, according to that help page. Read the suggestion before selecting it if the screen contains private messages, account details or other sensitive material.
3. Ask for the exact identity, not a vague description
Use a focused prompt that tells Gemini what evidence to prioritize. For example:
- “What brand and model is this?”
- “Read the label and identify the exact model number.”
- “What visible details distinguish this product from similar versions?”
- “Identify the logo, model code and generation shown on the screen.”
These prompts request an analysis; they are not a guarantee that Gemini can resolve an obscured or low-resolution product. If Gemini gives only a category, ask a follow-up for the visible text or distinguishing features rather than accepting a guessed model.

4. Verify the proposed identification
Compare Gemini’s answer with the image itself. Check the spelling of the brand, the model code, connector layout, color, capacity, generation and any included accessories. A product family can contain several variants that look nearly identical but have different prices and specifications. If the code is partly visible, ask Gemini to transcribe only the characters it can actually read and mark uncertain characters; then compare that transcription with a manufacturer or merchant listing.
When the image is ambiguous, take a closer screenshot or show another angle. Ask about a serial-like label only if it is safe to share. Do not expose personal information, account numbers, addresses or private documents merely to identify a product.
Move from identification to price and product comparison
Once you have a likely name or model, start a shopping question in Gemini. Google’s shopping help says Gemini can find products, compare selected aspects, group visually rich results, and show product cards with details, reviews, buying options and links. It also supports follow-up questions about products, including basic specifications, prices and where to buy them.
Use a precise comparison prompt
Google’s own example prompt is: “Compare the [Product A] headphones with the [Product B] headphones.” Replace the bracketed names with the exact models you want to compare. You can also ask:
- “Compare the 128 GB and 256 GB versions of this exact model.”
- “Show the current prices and buying options for this model in my location.”
- “Compare battery life, dimensions, included accessories and warranty terms for these two models.”
- “Which listing is the same generation and capacity as the item in the screenshot?”
The documented shopping flow is available in the Gemini mobile app, Gemini web app and Gemini in Chrome, subject to eligibility. The overlay itself does not automatically create a complete merchant comparison for every image; treat screen recognition and shopping discovery as connected but separate steps.

Read the result as a set of leads
A product card or grouped result can contain a title, description, reviews, basic specifications, price and buying options. Open the linked merchant page for the offer you are considering. Check that the page describes the same generation, size, color, storage, bundle and condition shown in Gemini’s result. Reviews and descriptions can refer to a product family rather than the precise variant you selected.
Check every offer before purchasing
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Exact brand, model, generation, size, capacity and variant | Near-identical versions can have different specifications and prices. |
| Price | Displayed amount, currency, tax treatment and whether the price is current | A result may change after it was indexed or may exclude taxes. |
| Merchant | Seller name, eligibility and product condition | Gemini’s shopping features are limited to eligible merchants and products. |
| Availability | In-stock status and any regional or quantity limits | A product card does not guarantee inventory when you open the listing. |
| Delivery | Shipping charge, delivery date and geographic restrictions | Shipping can erase an apparent price advantage. |
| Returns and warranty | Merchant return window, exclusions and warranty coverage | The cheapest listing may have materially different after-sale terms. |
| Reviews and description | Whether they refer to the exact variant, not just the product family | Variant mixing can make reviews or specifications misleading. |
Ask Gemini to organize these factors, but open the merchant’s current page for the authoritative terms. A comparison response is not proof of the exact match, the lowest available price or inventory at every merchant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Gemini may identify the wrong item or price
Visual ambiguity
Packaging, reflections, cropped labels and similar product generations can produce a plausible but incorrect answer. A logo may identify a brand while leaving the model unresolved. Request the model number, provide a closer view and compare the answer with visible markings.
Incomplete shopping coverage
Shopping results depend on eligible merchants and product restrictions. A missing seller does not prove that no other seller stocks the item, and a displayed seller does not represent every market. Country-specific availability can change, so use the eligibility page linked above and inspect local merchant pages.
Changing prices and stock
Prices, taxes, shipping charges and inventory change independently of Gemini’s response. Record the currency and the time you check, then open the offer before paying. If the merchant page shows a different amount, use the merchant page as the current price and investigate whether the difference comes from variant, shipping, promotion or tax.

Context sent from the screen
Screen actions may upload the selected screenshot, text or file. Avoid activating them over confidential content. If a prompt does not need the entire screen, crop or select only the product area where the interface permits it. Google’s screen-action help explains which actions submit content automatically; review those controls before using the feature in work or personal-account screens.
Use Gemini in Chrome on a computer
Desktop Chrome has a different workflow from the Android overlay. Google documents screen selection for Chromebook Plus, Mac and Windows users in supported countries who are at least 13. It lets you attach a selected portion of a webpage to a Gemini prompt rather than opening a phone-style overlay.
- Open the relevant webpage in Chrome.
- Open Ask Gemini.
- Choose Add, then Select from screen.
- Draw selection boxes around the product image, title, specifications or prices you want Gemini to examine.
- Enter a focused question, such as “Which model is shown, and what exact details should I compare with another listing?”
- Adjust or remove the selection if it includes unrelated content, then submit the prompt.
This is useful when the product page is on a large screen or when you need to compare several pieces of page text. It is not the Android overlay workflow, and the documented country, age and device conditions apply.

Use Circle to Search as a separate Android option
Circle to Search is a Google Search feature on select Android phones, including Pixel 6 and later. It is not a Gemini overlay feature. Hold the Home button or navigation handle, then circle, highlight, scribble over or tap the on-screen item to search it without switching apps.
Circle to Search is useful when your immediate goal is a visual web search rather than a conversational Gemini analysis. Use Gemini when you want to ask follow-up questions about the visible context; use Circle to Search when a quick search of a selected object or phrase is the more direct route. Availability still depends on the phone and region.
A careful end-to-end example
Suppose a video shows a pair of headphones and the product name is not visible. Pause the video on the clearest frame and open Gemini over it. Select Ask about… and ask, “What brand and model are these headphones? Read any visible model code.” If Gemini identifies a product family but not a code, ask which visual details support that answer and capture a closer frame of the ear cup or packaging.
Next, ask Gemini’s shopping flow: “Compare the [identified model] with [the alternative model] for current price, battery life, included accessories and buying options.” Review the product cards, then open each relevant merchant link. Confirm that both listings have the same generation, color and configuration you intended to compare. Check currency, tax, shipping, delivery, returns, warranty and stock on the merchant pages. If one listing is a different capacity or bundle, remove it from the comparison rather than treating the lower number as a genuine saving.

Practical checklist
- Use a clear, close image and isolate one product at a time.
- Confirm Gemini’s screen-context controls before opening the overlay.
- Read the screen-action label and understand when content will be uploaded.
- Ask for an exact model number and visible evidence, not just a product category.
- Use a separate, explicit shopping prompt for product and price comparisons.
- Compare identical variants, generations, sizes and capacities.
- Verify merchant, currency, taxes, shipping, delivery, returns, warranty and stock.
- Use the current merchant page as the final price and availability reference.
- Check Google’s current eligibility information when shopping features do not appear.
- Choose Circle to Search or Gemini in Chrome when those workflows better match the device and task.
Bottom line
Gemini’s Android screen overlay is a convenient way to ask about a product without leaving the app you are viewing. Its strongest workflow is: capture a clear image, request the exact identity, then run a deliberate shopping comparison and verify each merchant offer. Treat the answer as assisted discovery—not a guarantee of model accuracy, lowest price or live inventory—and confirm the final details on the seller’s page.
