There are three practical ways to use Gemini on a computer: install Google’s native Gemini app, open the Gemini web app in a supported browser, or use Gemini in Chrome. The native Windows app opens with Alt + Space; the native Mac app uses Option + Space. Gemini in Chrome has a different shortcut set. Windows users need Windows 10 or later, while the current Mac app requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later. All three routes require an internet connection, and a signed-in Google account provides more features than signed-out web access.
Choose the right Gemini experience first
Google’s desktop offerings overlap, but they are not the same product. Choosing the route before installing anything prevents the most common shortcut and feature confusion.

Google’s official descriptions of the native apps include quick answers, drafting, summarizing articles and documents, brainstorming, coding help, and image analysis. Feature availability can vary by account, organization settings, location, and the particular Gemini feature.

A useful rule is to match the interface to the task. The native apps are launchers that put a chat window over whatever you are doing. The web app is the broadest installation-free option. Gemini in Chrome is oriented around the page and tab you already have open, so its controls and keyboard commands are intentionally different.

Check requirements and account access
Windows requirements
- Windows 10 or later.
- At least 8 GB of RAM.
- At least 200 MB of free disk space.
- A stable internet connection.
- A personal Google Account, or a work or school account whose administrator has enabled Gemini.
These are Google’s stated requirements for the Windows app, not a performance benchmark. An organization may impose additional policies or licensing conditions even when the computer meets the technical minimums. Mac requirements
- An Apple Silicon Mac.
- macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later.
- At least 8 GB of RAM.
- At least 200 MB of available disk space.
- A stable internet connection.
- A personal Google Account, or a work or school account enabled by its administrator.
The Apple Silicon and Sequoia requirements apply to the current native Mac app documented by Google. If your Mac uses an Intel processor or an older macOS release, use the web app instead of assuming the native installer will work.
Account differences on the web
You can open the Gemini web app without signing in for some basic interactions. Signing in is required for additional capabilities and for saving Gemini Apps activity. Google specifically lists past chats, personalization, Connected Apps, image generation, Gems, and file upload among capabilities that are unavailable when signed out. Supported browsers include Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Edge (identified as “Edgium” in one Google help result). Details are documented in Google’s computer guide to Gemini Apps.

For a work or school account, the administrator controls whether Gemini is enabled, so a successful Google login does not by itself guarantee access to every feature. If a control is absent, check the account currently shown in Gemini before treating it as an installation problem.
Install and start Gemini on Windows
- On the Windows PC, open gemini.google/desktop.
- Download the installer named
GeminiSetup.exe. - Run the downloaded file and follow the installer’s prompts.
- Open the Start menu, find Gemini, and launch it.
- Sign in with your personal Google Account or an enabled work or school account.
After Gemini is running, press Alt + Space to bring up its quick-access window. The shortcut belongs to the native Windows app; it does not open the Gemini web app in an arbitrary browser tab.
Install updates on Windows
When the Windows app opens with an available update notification, choose Restart in that notification to install the update. If you do not see an update notice, continue using the installed version and check again when Gemini presents a new notification.
If the shortcut appears unresponsive immediately after installation, launch Gemini from Start first. The quick-access command is associated with the running native app, not merely with the installer file sitting in Downloads.
Install and start Gemini on a Mac
- On the Apple Silicon Mac, visit gemini.google/mac.
- Download the Mac
.dmgfile. - Open the downloaded disk image.
- Drag Gemini into the Applications folder.
- Open Gemini from Applications and sign in if prompted.
With the app installed and running, press Option + Space to open its chat window. This is the native Mac app shortcut, not the shortcut for Gemini in Chrome.
Check for Mac updates
In the menu bar, choose Gemini > Check for Updates. Follow the update prompt if one is offered.

The first launch is also a good time to confirm that Gemini is using the account you intend to use. A managed account can have different capabilities from a personal account, even on the same Mac and with the same app version.
Use the Gemini web app without installing an app
- Open Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, or Edge.
- Go to gemini.google.com.
- Sign in if you need saved activity, past chats, personalization, Connected Apps, image generation, Gems, or file uploads.
- Start a chat by entering a prompt in the message field.
The web interface supports adding a file or image, editing a prompt, and—on some prompts—reviewing alternative drafts. Gemini can also create files in supported formats, including Docs, Sheets, PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, LaTeX, TXT, RTF, and Markdown. Google notes that availability varies by account and feature, so a format or control shown in one account may not appear in another.

A practical first prompt
Give Gemini the task, context, constraints, and desired output in one message. For example: “Summarize this document in five bullet points, identify two unresolved questions, and return the result as a Markdown checklist.” Add the document with the file control when your signed-in account supports uploads. A precise format request makes the result easier to review and reuse.
Working with files and drafts
When the upload control is available, attach the source instead of pasting a long document in several disconnected messages. Tell Gemini what to extract and how to present it. For example, ask for a table of claims and supporting passages, then request a second pass that flags items needing verification. If Gemini offers other drafts, compare them for omissions and tone; an alternative draft is another version to inspect, not a guarantee that it is more accurate.
File creation is useful when the requested format is explicit. You can ask for a DOCX, XLSX, CSV, PDF, Markdown, or another listed format, but the control and output options depend on the account and feature. Open the generated file and check headings, formulas, links, and formatting before sharing it.
What you can do with the native desktop apps
Everyday text and research tasks
- Ask for quick explanations or step-by-step answers.
- Draft emails, outlines, notes, and other text.
- Summarize an article, document, or web page.
- Brainstorm names, approaches, or alternatives.
- Get coding assistance, such as an explanation of an error or a suggested implementation.
- Analyze an image.
The native apps provide a desktop entry point for these tasks; they do not turn Gemini into an offline assistant. The Windows and Mac requirement lists both specify a stable internet connection.
Mac voice and window-aware workflows
The Mac app adds a Speak to Window workflow. It can dictate cleaned-up text at the cursor, revise selected text, summarize files such as documents, PDFs, and images, generate images from a spoken request, and carry context across app windows.
To dictate with Speak to Window, hold Fn while speaking and release it to submit, or use the tap-Fn and in-app controls described by the app. The exact control shown can depend on the current app state. In Gemini’s settings, the Use reasoning option controls whether Speak to Window distinguishes instructions from dictation. That distinction matters when you want Gemini both to obey a command and to transcribe words at the cursor.
For example, you might select a paragraph in a document and ask Gemini to shorten it, or place the cursor in an email and dictate a request for a polished reply. Review the resulting text before sending or publishing it.

How the Mac workflow differs from ordinary chat
Ordinary chat treats your typed or spoken prompt as the conversation input. Speak to Window adds the active window, cursor position, or selected text as useful context. That makes it suited to quick edits and summaries, but it also means you should check which window is active before speaking. If the wrong document or field has focus, the result may be applied in an unexpected place. Use a short instruction that names the intended action, such as “rewrite the selected paragraph in a neutral tone,” and inspect the insertion point afterward.

The native-app row opens the installed Gemini application. The other rows control Gemini in Chrome and are useful when you want Gemini to work beside the page currently open in Chrome.
On a Mac, remember that Option is the key labeled Alt on some keyboards. On Windows, do not substitute the Chrome command for the native-app command: Alt + G opens Gemini in Chrome, while Alt + Space calls the installed Windows app.
Use and customize Gemini in Chrome
Gemini in Chrome is designed around the browser tab rather than a separate desktop window. Its open/close shortcut, tab-switching shortcut, and selection mode let you bring Gemini into the current browsing workflow.
- Open Chrome and use the appropriate Gemini in Chrome shortcut from the table.
- Use the tab-switching shortcut when you need to move between the page and Gemini.
- Use selection mode when you want to work with a selected part of the page.
Change Gemini in Chrome shortcuts
- Open Gemini in Chrome.
- Choose More options.
- Open Settings & help.
- Choose Open Chrome settings.
- Edit the Gemini shortcut in Chrome’s shortcut settings.
Changing a Chrome shortcut does not change Alt + Space or Option + Space for the native Gemini apps.
Selection mode is especially useful when your question concerns one part of a page rather than the entire page. Select the relevant passage, invoke selection mode, and phrase the request precisely—for example, ask for a plain-language explanation or a list of claims to verify. Keep in mind that browser integration does not remove the need to check the answer against the original page.
Use a simple workflow for better answers
1. State the outcome
Begin with the result you need: a comparison, a checklist, a rewrite, a diagnosis of an error, or a file in a particular format.
2. Supply relevant context
Include the audience, operating system, programming language, document purpose, or other facts that change the answer. Attach a file or image when your signed-in account provides the upload control.

3. Set constraints
Specify length, tone, deadline, required headings, excluded topics, or output format. If you need a file, name the supported format explicitly.
4. Inspect the response
Ask a follow-up question or edit the prompt when the answer misses a requirement. For prompts that offer them, compare Gemini’s other drafts rather than accepting the first version automatically.
5. Verify consequential details
Google’s warning is direct: “Gemini Apps can make mistakes.” Double-check facts, calculations, citations, code, and summaries. Do not rely on Gemini as a substitute for professional advice in medical, legal, financial, safety, or other high-consequence decisions. Troubleshoot the most common setup problems
The installer will not run on Windows
- Confirm that the computer is running Windows 10 or later.
- Check that at least 200 MB of disk space is free and that the computer has 8 GB or more of RAM.
- Download a fresh copy of
GeminiSetup.exefrom gemini.google/desktop rather than using an old installer. - If the account belongs to an organization, ask the administrator whether Gemini is enabled for that account.
The Mac app is unavailable or will not install
- Check Apple menu > About This Mac to confirm that the Mac uses Apple Silicon.
- Verify that macOS is Sequoia 15.0 or later.
- Ensure at least 200 MB of free space and 8 GB of RAM are available.
- Use the web app if the Mac does not meet the native-app requirements.
A shortcut does nothing
- Identify which product is open. The native apps use Alt + Space or Option + Space; Gemini in Chrome uses the separate Chrome shortcuts.
- Make sure the native app is installed and running before trying its quick-access shortcut.
- For Chrome, open the Chrome shortcut settings through Gemini’s More options > Settings & help > Open Chrome settings path and check whether the shortcut was changed.
Features or upload controls are missing
- Sign in to the web app; signed-out sessions do not include several features.
- Check whether the account is personal or organization-managed and whether an administrator has enabled Gemini.
- Allow for account and feature variation: Google does not promise that every capability is available to every user.
Gemini appears out of date
- On Windows, use Restart in the update notification shown when the app opens.
- On Mac, choose Gemini > Check for Updates.
Which option should you use?
- Choose the Windows app if you have Windows 10 or later, meet the memory and storage minimums, and want Alt + Space access from anywhere on the desktop.
- Choose the Mac app if you have Apple Silicon with macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later and want Option + Space plus Speak to Window voice and selected-window workflows.
- Choose the web app if you want no installation, use an unsupported operating system for the native apps, or need a browser-based option.
- Choose Gemini in Chrome if your work is centered on web pages and you want browser-specific open, switch, and selection shortcuts.
Whichever route you select, keep the product boundary clear: native-app shortcuts, web-app controls, and Gemini in Chrome shortcuts are related but interchangeable only in concept, not in setup or keyboard commands.

Can I use Gemini on Windows without installing the desktop app?

The documented customization path applies to Gemini in Chrome. Its shortcuts can be edited through More options > Settings & help > Open Chrome settings. The native-app quick-access commands are separate and should not be confused with Chrome’s customizable shortcuts.
