Gemini Live lets you have a spoken, back-and-forth conversation with Gemini instead of typing each prompt. On an eligible Android phone or tablet, open the Gemini app, tap Live at the bottom (or swipe left), accept the first-use prompts, and start speaking. You can also say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk” after enabling Hey Google and Voice Match.
The important limitation is that hands-free, background, and lock-screen use are different modes. You can start Live only after unlocking the device. Once a Live session is running, notifications and lock-screen permissions can let it continue while you use another app or briefly lock the screen.
What you need before starting
Gemini Live runs inside the Gemini mobile app. Install the current Gemini app and the latest Google app, then sign in with an account eligible for Gemini Apps. Google lists Android 9 or later and at least 2 GB of RAM as the minimum for the Android app; Android Go is not supported. Availability can also depend on your country, account type, language, and rollout status. Check Google’s Gemini mobile app availability page if the app or Live control is missing.

- Apps: The Gemini mobile app and the latest Google app.
- Account: A signed-in Google account that is eligible for Gemini Apps.
- Language: Supported Gemini language and region. Google currently lists Farsi as unavailable in the Gemini mobile app.

Google may release Live features gradually, so two otherwise similar phones can show different controls while an update is rolling out.

- Google Pixel Buds 2a deliver lightweight comfort, crisp audio, Active Noise Cancellation, and a dependable battery, all for less[1]
- Hear only what you want to hear; Google Tensor A1 powers Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal 1.5 to help block external noise; or switch to Transparency mode to hear the world around you while you listen
- Immerse yourself in clear, crisp audio with the 11 mm dynamic speaker driver, or customize the levels of bass, treble, and more with the 5-band equalizer
- Pixel Buds 2a are built for lightweight comfort and an impeccable fit; secure them during workouts or commutes with the twist-to-adjust stabilizer, or twist the other direction for relaxed comfort
- Hear and be heard with Clear Calling; it helps block background noise, so wind, external chatter, or other distractions in your environment won’t interrupt your conversations[2]
Start Gemini Live by touch
- Unlock your Android phone or tablet.
- Open the Gemini app.
- Tap Live at the bottom of the screen. If the button is not visible, swipe left in the Gemini app to reach the Live interface.
- Complete any first-use explanation or permission prompts.
- Wait for the Live conversation screen, then speak normally. Gemini responds aloud and you can interrupt it with another spoken turn.
Live is designed for natural conversation rather than one-question-at-a-time dictation. You can ask a follow-up, correct an answer, change the subject, or pause the exchange without returning to a text box.
End or temporarily pause the microphone
Use Hold when you want to pause the microphone without discarding the conversation. Tap End when you are finished. Holding or ending the session matters for privacy and for shared features such as screen or camera sharing: those features do not automatically resume after the session is stopped or the screen is locked.
Start a conversation with your voice
On an unlocked device, say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or the shorter “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Google also documents starting a Live chat on Pixel Buds by saying “Hey Google, let’s talk.” The earbuds are optional; the phone still needs the Gemini app and an eligible account.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Turn on Hey Google and Voice Match
- Open Gemini and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Manage your Google Account.
- Open Data & privacy.
- Find the Voice Match or Hey Google controls and complete the voice-training prompts.
- Return to Gemini and try the launch phrase again.
The exact wording of the switches can vary by Android version and Google app release. Voice Match and Hey Google are not available for supervised accounts, and Google lists languages in which these voice features cannot be used. If the phrase is not recognized, check the Google app’s microphone permission, the selected Assistant or Gemini voice settings, and the language configured for the device.
What “hands-free” means here
With the phone unlocked, Hey Google gives you a hands-free way to begin a Gemini chat. It does not bypass every security check on a locked device. A voice trigger on a locked phone may open a general Gemini chat, but Google can require you to unlock before providing a response or personal information. That behavior is separate from Gemini Live: Live itself cannot be started from the locked screen.

Keep Gemini Live running while you use another app
Live can continue in the background, but Android must be allowed to show Gemini Live notifications. Without that permission, leaving the Gemini screen interrupts the workflow.
- Start a Live conversation while the phone is unlocked.
- Enable Live with Gemini notifications when Gemini asks, or turn them on in Android’s app-notification settings.
- From the Live screen, swipe up from the bottom edge to go to the home screen or another app. This sends Live to the background rather than ending it.
- To return, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Live with Gemini notification card.
Background mode is useful when you need to consult a calendar, read a webpage, change a setting, or move around another app while continuing to speak. Battery-saver policies, notification suppression, or manually dismissing the Live notification can make the session appear to stop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the Live notification is missing
- Open Android Settings, find Notifications, select Gemini, and make sure Live-related notifications are allowed. Menu names differ among phone manufacturers.
- Check that Do Not Disturb or a notification channel mute is not hiding the Live card.
- Return to the Gemini app and start Live again after changing notification permission.
- Install pending Gemini and Google app updates, then restart the phone if the control still does not appear.
Continue an existing Live chat when the screen is locked
Lock-screen continuation is narrower than hands-free launch. You must unlock the phone to begin Gemini Live. After a session has started, you can allow it to continue when the screen locks by enabling both the lock-screen Gemini setting and Live notifications.
- Open Gemini and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open the setting for Gemini on lock screen and turn it on.
- In Android notification settings, allow Live with Gemini notifications.
- Start Live while the phone is unlocked.
- Press the power button or let the screen time out. The already-running conversation can continue under the conditions permitted by your lock-screen settings.
If you put the chat on hold or it ends while the phone is locked, unlock the device before continuing. A fresh Live session cannot be initiated from the locked screen.
Lock-screen answers and private information
Google’s lock-screen controls allow selected general answers and actions, but they do not make all account data available without authentication. Personal content can still require an unlock. Calls and messages use a separate setting and require your opt-in. Review the details in Google’s guide to Gemini on a locked phone before enabling lock-screen access on a shared or easily accessible device.

Choose the right launch and conversation mode
| Situation | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Starting a normal Live session | Unlock the phone, open Gemini, tap Live or swipe left. | Full Live interface and spoken back-and-forth. |
| Starting by voice on an unlocked phone | Say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk.” | Hands-free launch after Hey Google and Voice Match are configured. |
| Using another app during Live | Allow Live notifications, then swipe up from the bottom edge. | Live remains available through the Live with Gemini notification. |
| Continuing after the screen locks | Turn on Gemini on lock screen and Live notifications before locking. | An existing session may continue; starting a new Live chat still requires an unlock. |
| Locked phone with no existing Live session | Unlock first, then launch Live. | Live cannot be started directly from the lock screen. |
This distinction prevents a common false expectation: “hands-free” removes the need to tap the Live button on an unlocked device, but it does not turn the lock screen into a fully authenticated Live launcher.
Use screen and camera sharing safely
Gemini Live can support screen sharing when Live notifications are enabled. Locking the screen or putting Live on hold stops screen sharing, and it does not resume automatically. Start sharing again only after returning to an active Live session and confirming that the intended screen is visible.
Camera sharing has additional stop conditions: it turns off when the screen locks, when you leave the Gemini app, or when Live is put on hold. Treat camera and screen sharing as separate from the audio conversation and check their indicators after returning from the background.
- Hide passwords, payment details, private messages, and unrelated notifications before sharing your screen.
- Frame only the object or area you want Gemini to analyze when using the camera.
- Stop sharing before opening another app that contains confidential information.
- Expect to restart sharing after a lock, hold, or app switch rather than assuming it persisted.
Connected Apps and account limitations
Some Connected Apps support in Live is being released gradually, so the available list can differ by account and region. For work or school accounts, Google currently limits Live Connected Apps to Calendar, Keep, and Tasks. If an integration is absent, it may not yet be available for that account rather than being incorrectly configured.
Connected Apps can expose information from other services during a spoken conversation. Review which services are enabled and avoid asking Live to read private data aloud when other people can hear the response.

Privacy, recording, and shared spaces
A Live conversation uses the phone’s microphone, and screen or camera sharing can add information that was not part of your spoken prompt. Google advises respecting other people’s privacy and asking permission before recording them or including them in a Live chat.
- Use Hold when someone enters the room and you do not want their speech captured.
- Tap End when the conversation is no longer needed instead of leaving an open microphone.
- Tell participants when Live is active, especially in meetings, classrooms, or public spaces.
- Check the lock-screen notification and privacy settings on devices used by children or shared with family members.
Troubleshoot common Gemini Live problems
The Live button is missing
Confirm that you are in the Gemini mobile app, not the Gemini web app or Google Messages. Google says Gemini Live is not currently available in either of those locations. Verify Android 9 or later, 2 GB RAM or more, a non-Go edition of Android, a supported language and region, and an eligible signed-in account. Update the Gemini and Google apps and look again after the rollout reaches your account.
“Hey Google” does nothing
Check that Hey Google and Voice Match are enabled through Gemini’s profile and Google Account Data & privacy settings. Voice Match does not work with supervised accounts and may be unavailable in some languages. Make sure the Google app can use the microphone, then test the exact phrase “Hey Google, let’s talk Live.”
Live stops when you leave Gemini
Turn on Live with Gemini notifications. Android uses that notification to keep the conversation reachable in the background. Swipe up from the bottom edge rather than force-closing Gemini, and return through the notification card.
Live stops when the phone locks
Enable both Gemini on lock screen and Live notifications. Remember that these settings affect an existing conversation only. If Live was held or ended while locked, unlock the phone before trying to continue. Screen and camera sharing also stop on lock and require a fresh share action.

Gemini asks for an unlock
That is expected for personal information and some actions. Lock-screen access permits selected general answers, not unrestricted access to private account data. Unlock the phone when Gemini requests authentication.
The microphone or camera will not work
Check Android’s app permissions for Gemini, make sure another app is not exclusively using the microphone or camera, and verify that Live is not on hold. If the camera was interrupted by an app switch or lock, return to Gemini and start camera sharing again.
Important availability boundaries
Google’s feature pages are updated as Live expands, but availability is not universal. Country, account, language, device capability, Android version, and staged rollout can all affect the controls you see. Farsi is currently not supported in the Gemini mobile app, and supervised accounts cannot use Hey Google or Voice Match. Gemini Live is also not currently offered in the Gemini web app or Google Messages.
For the current requirements and regional list, use Google’s Android availability documentation. For the current Live workflow, background behavior, sharing rules, and Connected Apps notes, see Talk naturally with Gemini Live and What you can do with the Gemini mobile app.
A quick setup checklist
- Install or update Gemini and the Google app.
- Confirm Android 9 or newer, at least 2 GB RAM, and a supported non-Go device.
- Sign in with an eligible Google account and supported language.
- Open Gemini, tap Live or swipe left, and complete first-use prompts.
- For voice launch, configure Hey Google and Voice Match.
- For background use, allow Live with Gemini notifications.
- For lock-screen continuation, enable Gemini on lock screen as well.
- Remember that a locked phone cannot start a new Live session.
- Use Hold or End to control the microphone, and ask permission before including other people.
Once these settings are in place, the practical workflow is simple: unlock and start Live by touch or voice, keep the Live notification available when moving between apps, and treat lock-screen access as continuation of an existing conversation rather than a way to launch one.
