Set up your 5K plan in Garmin Connect, not on the watch itself: open Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans, choose a running plan, enter your current training and goal details, select your schedule and race or milestone date, then sync a compatible Garmin device. Start each workout from the Garmin Coach glance, workout library or a compatible activity profile. If you miss a session, the result depends on the plan: Run Coach adapts automatically and does not support manual rescheduling, while some Expert Running Plans can be moved up to seven days ahead.
What Garmin Coach does for a first 5K
Garmin Coach is the training-plan area in Garmin Connect. It turns the information you provide about your current running into scheduled workouts leading to either a 5K event or a milestone date. The plan is managed in Connect, while scheduled workouts can be delivered to a compatible Garmin device for guided completion.
The name “Garmin Coach” covers more than one running-plan type. Garmin’s current menu distinguishes Run Coach, Expert Running Plans and Self-Guided Plans. The screens and controls you see after setup therefore depend on the plan you select. In particular, missed-workout behavior is not identical across all three options.
That distinction matters for a first 5K. You are not simply downloading a fixed calendar and moving every session whenever you like. Some plans respond to your progress and missed sessions, while others expose more traditional scheduling controls. Treat the plan shown in your account as the authority for dates, workout availability and editing options.

Before you create the plan
Have your current training information ready
Connect asks for your current average weekly distance and pace. Use figures that represent what you are actually doing now, rather than an aspirational pace. Those entries are part of the information used to shape the plan. If your running has varied from week to week, use a representative recent average instead of the single best week you have had.
Be prepared to provide a 5K goal as well. Depending on the plan flow, that may mean the target information requested by Connect for the event or milestone you choose. The fields can differ, so complete the prompts displayed for your selected plan rather than assuming every user sees identical questions.
Decide what will end the plan
You can work toward a specific race or event date, or use a milestone with an end date. If you already know the date of your first 5K, an event-based plan gives Connect a fixed target. A milestone is useful when you want a deadline without selecting a particular race. Either way, the date establishes the planning horizon and affects how much time the schedule has to build toward the goal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDecide which days are genuinely available
The setup can ask which days you can work out and which day you prefer for the long run. Think about commuting, family commitments and recovery when answering. Marking every day as available may produce a schedule that looks flexible but is difficult to follow. Your answers are used to place sessions, so accuracy is more useful than optimism.
Check your device situation
Garmin describes Coach workouts as syncing to compatible Garmin devices. Compatibility is model-specific, and the available Garmin information does not establish a complete list for every 5K workflow. You can create and manage the plan in Connect, but verify support for your exact watch before relying on on-device workout guidance. A compatible watch can display structured steps; buying a particular watch or accessory is not established as a requirement.
Create a 5K plan in Garmin Connect
1. Open Garmin Coach Plans
- In the Garmin Connect mobile app, select More > Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans.
- On the Garmin Connect website, choose Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans.
The plan is controlled from this Connect area. If you cannot find it, confirm that you are signed in to the Connect account paired with your Garmin device. The app and website may present the navigation differently, but both use the Training & Planning area.
2. Select Running
Choose Running and accept the terms if Connect presents them. The running section is where the 5K target and running-plan choices appear. Do not select a cycling or general fitness plan by mistake; the goal and workout prompts need to belong to the running category.
3. Choose a training focus when prompted
Some setup flows ask for a training focus. Garmin indicates that selecting Improve Fitness skips directly to plan selection. If your screen offers a different focus or proceeds differently, follow the options shown for the plan type available to your account. The presence and wording of this step can vary, so an absent focus screen does not mean setup has failed.
4. Enter your baseline and 5K goal
Provide your average weekly distance and current pace, select 5K, and enter the requested goal information. The goal fields can vary with the selected plan and the way you choose to define the target. Entering a realistic baseline gives the schedule a more useful starting point than entering the pace you hope to reach at the end.

5. Set days and workout preferences
When prompted, identify the days on which you can train and select your preferred long-run day. Where the plan supports it, choose whether to include supplemental strength workouts. Be realistic: the schedule you enter determines when Connect places sessions, so unavailable days should not be marked as available merely to make the plan appear faster.
Strength is an optional setup choice where offered, not a separate purchase requirement. If you cannot consistently complete those additional sessions, leave the option off rather than creating a fuller schedule than you can maintain.

6. Choose an event or milestone date
Select a race or event and its date, or choose a milestone and an end date. Connect then presents a recommended plan. Review the proposed schedule and select the plan that fits the target and the days you supplied. An event date is tied to a named race or event; a milestone supplies an end point without requiring that event selection.
7. Sync the device
Synchronize your Garmin device with Garmin Connect after selecting the plan. Garmin says plans are managed in Connect and workouts can be sent to compatible devices. Keep the app and watch connected until synchronization finishes; a plan visible in Connect is not necessarily already present on the watch.
Do the first sync before your first scheduled run, then check the watch for the workout. This separates setup from execution: Connect holds the schedule, while the device receives the individual workout for on-wrist use.
Choosing among Garmin’s running-plan types
Use the controls shown in your account rather than assuming that every Garmin Coach plan behaves the same way. The most useful comparison is how much the plan adapts, what date you are targeting and whether a missed workout can be moved manually.
| Plan type | Structure | Date choices | Missed-workout control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run Coach | Adaptive plan that changes as training information changes | Race/event date or milestone end date, depending on the setup flow | Does not allow manual rescheduling; Garmin says the plan adjusts when a workout is missed |
| Expert Running Plans | Plan-specific scheduled workouts with their own controls | Plan flow determines the available event or milestone choices | Can be rescheduled up to seven days ahead where that control is supported |
| Self-Guided Plans | Self-guided schedule rather than the adaptive Run Coach model | Options depend on the plan shown in Connect | Controls vary by plan; do not apply Run Coach rules automatically |
If your priority is automatic adjustment after a missed session, Run Coach is the relevant distinction. If you need to move sessions yourself, look for a plan whose controls explicitly provide rescheduling; Garmin documents that behavior for supported Expert Running Plans, not for Run Coach.
Do not infer that a plan is self-guided, expert or adaptive solely from the workout name. Check the plan label in Connect and the controls available after selection. The same target distance can be offered through different plan types, but the calendar behavior can differ.
Find and start each scheduled workout
Start from an activity profile
With workout prompts enabled, starting a compatible running activity profile can prompt the scheduled Coach workout. Select the prompted workout and begin. The activity profile must be compatible with the Coach workout shown by your device. If the prompt does not appear, that does not by itself prove the session is missing.

Start from the Garmin Coach glance
Open the Garmin Coach glance on the watch, locate the scheduled workout, choose it and start it with a compatible activity profile. This route is useful when the prompt does not appear automatically and lets you confirm which session is currently scheduled.

Start from the workout library
You can also locate the workout in the device’s workout library, select it and start it with a compatible activity profile. The exact menu wording can differ by device, but the Coach glance and workout library are the documented alternatives when a prompt is absent.
Let the workout finish correctly
A Coach workout includes a cooldown after its structured steps. Garmin states that the watch keeps recording through the cooldown and continues recording until you manually stop and save the activity. Do not assume the workout has been saved merely because the last structured interval ended: stop and save the activity when you are finished.
Stopping manually is therefore part of completing the session. If you walk or jog during the cooldown, leave the activity running until that portion is done, then use the watch’s stop and save controls.
What happens when you miss a workout?
Run Coach: no manual drag-and-drop
Run Coach is adaptive. Garmin says it adjusts when a workout is missed, and it does not allow manual rescheduling. Do not try to move a missed Run Coach session to another day by dragging it in the calendar; that control is not available for this plan type. Open the current schedule in Connect and follow the revised workout sequence it provides.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The practical implication is to check Connect after the missed date rather than attempting to recreate the session yourself. The updated schedule, not an independently chosen replacement date, is the plan you should follow.
Expert Running Plans: check for the reschedule control
Expert Running Plans have separate controls. Where supported, Garmin allows a workout to be rescheduled up to seven days ahead. The seven-day limit is a forward-looking window, not a guarantee that every Expert plan or every workout can be moved. If the option is not shown, use the schedule presented by Connect instead of assuming that the control exists.
Self-Guided Plans: follow the plan’s own rules
Self-Guided Plans are distinct from adaptive Run Coach. Their available editing and missed-session behavior depends on the specific plan. Read the controls shown in Connect before changing dates. Applying the Run Coach rule to a self-guided schedule, or the Expert-plan seven-day rule to every plan, can produce the wrong result.
Troubleshoot a plan or workout that is missing
The plan is not on the watch
- In Garmin Connect, open Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans and confirm that the plan still appears.
- Verify that the Garmin device is connected to Connect and that synchronization completes.
- Restart the device.
- Check for available device software updates.
- Confirm that your exact model is compatible with the Coach functions you are trying to use.
These checks separate a plan-account problem from a transfer problem. If the plan is absent in Connect, syncing the watch again will not recreate it; revisit the plan in Connect first. If it is present in Connect but absent on the watch, focus on connection, sync completion and device support.

The workout is on the plan but does not appear as a prompt
- Check whether Workout Prompts are disabled.
- Open the Garmin Coach glance and look for the scheduled session.
- Search the workout library.
- Start the session from a compatible activity profile if it is available there.
A missing prompt does not necessarily mean that the workout was deleted. Garmin specifically identifies the Coach glance and workout library as places to find it when prompts are not displayed.
The workout will not start
Use a compatible activity profile and confirm that the workout has synchronized to the device. If it remains unavailable after a completed sync and restart, check the current Garmin support information for your model; there is no universal model list covering every Coach function in this workflow.
How to use the schedule without overcommitting
Enter an honest weekly distance
Your weekly-distance and pace entries describe your starting point. If your recent running has been irregular, enter the representative average requested by Connect rather than a number from an unusually strong week. That gives the plan a baseline that better reflects what you can currently repeat.
Protect the long-run day
The setup asks for a preferred long-run day when that prompt is available. Select a day you can consistently keep free. Changing availability after the plan is created can affect how practical the schedule is, especially when the plan is working toward a fixed event date.

Some plans offer supplemental strength workouts. Include them only if the schedule and plan controls support them and you can keep those sessions on the days you selected. The option is part of plan setup; it is not a requirement to buy separate equipment or services.
Choose a date you can actually reach
A race date or milestone end date determines the planning horizon. If the target date is too close for the schedule Connect can generate, select a later milestone or event rather than treating missed sessions as a reason to compress the plan manually. Run Coach is designed to adapt within its own rules, not to be rewritten by moving sessions yourself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Garmin Coach does—and does not—require
- Required for setup: Garmin Connect, a running-plan selection, current average weekly distance and pace, a 5K goal, available workout days and (when requested) a long-run day, plus a race or milestone date.
- Needed for wrist guidance: a compatible Garmin device that has synchronized with Connect.
- Not established as required: a particular watch model, shoe, heart-rate monitor, book or other accessory. Garmin information does not identify a specific product as necessary or best for a first 5K.
You can therefore begin by setting up the plan in Connect and checking your existing device’s compatibility, rather than treating a new purchase as part of the training-plan process. A compatible watch is useful for following structured steps on your wrist, but the plan itself is created and managed in Connect.
A practical first-session checklist
- Open Garmin Connect and confirm the selected 5K plan appears under Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans.
- Check that the weekly distance, pace, available days and target date reflect your current situation.
- Sync the compatible Garmin device and wait for synchronization to complete.
- On the watch, look for the workout prompt, Garmin Coach glance or workout-library entry.
- Start it with the compatible activity profile.
- Complete the structured steps and cooldown.
- Manually stop and save the activity so the full recording is stored.
- If the session is missed, follow the plan-specific rule: Run Coach adapts automatically; supported Expert Running Plans may offer rescheduling up to seven days ahead.
Key limitations to keep in mind
Garmin’s menu labels and available controls can differ by plan type, device model and software version. The documented workflow establishes how to create a plan in Connect and send workouts to compatible devices, but it does not establish that every Garmin watch supports every Coach function. When a control described here is absent, use the options displayed for your selected plan and consult the current Garmin support information for your exact model.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I create a Garmin Coach 5K plan?
In Garmin Connect, open More > Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans in the mobile app, or choose Training & Planning > Garmin Coach Plans on the website. Select Running and follow the prompts.
What information does Garmin Connect ask for?
The setup can ask for your current average weekly distance and pace, a 5K goal, available workout days, a preferred long-run day, strength-workout preference where supported, and a race or milestone end date.
Can I use a milestone instead of a race?
Yes. The setup can use a specific event and date or a milestone with an end date. The choice determines the target at the end of the plan.
How do I load a Garmin Coach workout to my watch?
Select the plan in Garmin Connect, then sync the compatible Garmin device. After synchronization, find the workout through a workout prompt, the Garmin Coach glance or the workout library.
Why is my Garmin Coach workout not showing up?
Confirm the plan appears in Connect, verify that the device is connected and synchronized, check whether Workout Prompts are disabled, and look in the Garmin Coach glance or workout library. Restart the device and check for software updates if necessary.
Can I reschedule a missed Garmin Coach workout?
It depends on the plan. Run Coach does not allow manual rescheduling and adjusts after a missed workout. Supported Expert Running Plans may allow rescheduling up to seven days ahead. Self-Guided Plans have their own controls.
Does a Garmin Coach workout stop recording automatically after the intervals?
No. Garmin says the watch records through the cooldown and continues recording until you manually stop and save the activity.
Do I need to buy a particular Garmin watch or accessory?
No specific watch, shoe, heart-rate monitor or other accessory is identified as required or best. You do need a compatible Garmin device for on-wrist workout guidance, and compatibility depends on the exact model.
The Bottom Line
Create the plan in Garmin Connect, enter an honest baseline and realistic 5K date, then sync a compatible device. Use the Coach glance, prompt or workout library to start sessions, manually stop and save after the cooldown, and follow the plan-specific missed-workout rule—Run Coach adapts while supported Expert Plans may allow a move of up to seven days.
