The Garmin Approach S72 combines on-course hole views and golf tools with swing metrics, biometric data, practice logging, and post-round putting analysis. What you can use depends on the feature: green reading is limited to select courses and requires an active Garmin Golf membership, while Virtual Caddie depends on accumulated play data and a phone-app connection. Optional Approach CT10 sensors can automate club and shot tracking, but they are not required for basic golf functions.
This guide explains what each feature does and what it needs. Garmin’s S72 golfing manual page exposes only its heading and revision date, so exact button sequences for starting a round, navigating holes, or entering scores are not verified here; consult the full S72 owner’s manual for device-specific controls.
What the S72 golf features do—and what they require
| Feature | What it provides | Key requirement or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Aerial hole imagery | An enhanced view of hole layout to help assess layup areas and safer places to miss. | Garmin marks this as membership-dependent. It is decision support, not a guarantee of where a shot will land. Garmin announcement, October 6, 2026 |
| Green reading | Green contour information, including left/right break and uphill/downhill slope. | Requires an active Garmin Golf membership and is available on select courses, not every course. Garmin support |
| Virtual Caddie | Club and aim-point suggestions informed by hole layout, wind, elevation, and your prior-shot history. | Garmin support lists five rounds with Club Prompt enabled or paired CT10 sensors, plus a Garmin Golf app connection. It also says recommendations are unavailable with Big Numbers or Tournament Mode enabled. Garmin support |
| CT10 shot tracking | Can automatically record shot location, distance, and club type. | Requires optional compatible sensors; basic golf functions do not require CT10. S72 manual |
| Practice and post-round analysis | Driving-range activity logging, swing metrics, biometric context, and putting analytics such as speed bias, direction bias, and make rate. | Putting analytics are reviewed in Garmin Golf after a round. Garmin announcement |
How to use hole views and aerial imagery
Use the watch’s hole imagery as a planning aid: review the layout, consider where a layup may leave a manageable next shot, and identify safer areas to miss. Garmin describes the imagery as enhanced aerial views. It helps you evaluate options but cannot predict the result of a swing or guarantee a safe landing area.

Garmin identifies this as a membership-dependent advanced golf feature. Course data and feature coverage can vary, so do not assume imagery or every overlay will be available at every venue. Check the Garmin Golf membership details and course coverage for the courses you play before relying on a specific view.

- Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more
How to use green reading on the Approach S72
- At the green, go to the flag and mark the pin location using the watch’s green-reading control. Consult the S72 owner’s manual for the exact control and screen sequence.
- Return to your ball. The watch can then show contour information for the putt, including the direction of break and whether the slope is uphill or downhill.
- Use that information alongside your own read of the green; the feature supplies contour guidance, not a guaranteed line or make prediction.
Green reading requires an active Garmin Golf membership and is supported only on select courses. Garmin does not establish that every green is mapped. The feature’s availability therefore depends both on membership status and course coverage. Garmin support on green reading
Does Virtual Caddie need CT10 sensors?
No. Garmin’s support information describes two routes for building the history Virtual Caddie needs: play five rounds with Club Prompt enabled, or use paired CT10 sensors. It also lists a connection to the Garmin Golf app as a setup prerequisite. CT10 is therefore optional, rather than a requirement for every Virtual Caddie setup. Garmin says the recommendations draw on prior-shot information alongside factors such as hole layout, elevation, and wind.

Approach CT10 sensors
Compatible CT10 sensors are an optional way to automate club and shot tracking. Garmin says they can record shot location, distance, and club type. This can reduce manual tracking, but is not necessary for using the S72’s basic golf functions. The S72 manual lists wireless sensors, and Garmin says compatible sensors pair over ANT+ or Bluetooth. Compatible laser rangefinders
The manual also lists compatible laser rangefinders for flag-distance information. That is a separate accessory route for distance to the flag; Garmin’s cited material does not establish a specific model recommendation here. Garmin S72 manual
Use swing metrics, biometrics, and practice tools
Swing metrics
Garmin lists hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation, and other swing metrics among the S72’s golf features. Treat these as information for reviewing your motion, not as a diagnosis or proof that a particular swing change will improve results. Garmin announcement

The watch’s golf biometric data lets you review how heart rate varied before and after shots. Garmin says these biometric features are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition. Garmin announcement

Driving range and putting review
A driving-range activity can be logged into Garmin Connect. After a round, Garmin Golf putting analytics include speed bias, direction bias, and make rate. These are useful for reviewing practice and putting patterns; the announcement does not claim that the analytics guarantee a scoring improvement. Garmin announcement
