To share gameplay on Nintendo Switch 2, join or start a GameChat room, press the C Button to open the C Menu, then select Share Game Screen. You do not need a camera. Nintendo’s current US guidance requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership, an internet connection, a Nintendo Account, current system software, phone verification and approved friends.
Before you share: check the requirements
GameChat screen sharing is a feature of Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in GameChat service. Nintendo’s current US support guidance lists these requirements:

- A Nintendo Switch 2 with the most recent system update installed.
- An internet connection. GameChat requires a persistent connection while you use it.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. The temporary GameChat Open-Access Period ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; it has ended. A membership is now required under Nintendo’s current guidance.
- A Nintendo Account, with the GameChat setup and phone-number verification completed.
- Friends approved for GameChat. Both you and the people you want to chat with must approve one another.
The setup flow runs a network connection test. If it reports a connection problem, resolve that before trying to start a chat or share a screen; an unstable connection can prevent sharing or make it unreliable.

The membership date matters if you remember trying GameChat during its launch period. Nintendo provided an Open-Access Period from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026. That was a fixed, temporary window, not a recurring free-access offer. As of October 2026, Nintendo’s current US guidance lists Nintendo Switch Online membership as a requirement. Check Nintendo’s regional support information if you are outside the US, because this guidance is US-specific.

Prepare the account and friend approvals before the call if possible. A room can be created only after the account has passed the setup flow, and the people you plan to invite need to be approved on both sides. Completing those steps in advance avoids getting to the sharing menu only to discover that the account, phone verification or friendship approval is incomplete.
Set up GameChat for the first time
If you have already completed GameChat setup, skip to starting or joining a room. Otherwise, use the C Menu to begin setup and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Press the C Button to open the C Menu.
- Select the account you want to use for GameChat.
- Complete the network connection test and accept the terms shown on screen.
- Verify the phone number registered to the account. Nintendo sends a verification code by text message.
- Approve the friends you want to chat with. They must approve you as well before you can communicate through GameChat.
For players under 16, Nintendo requires a parent or guardian to complete the setup and approval through parental controls. Nintendo’s US guidance says the parent or guardian’s account phone number is used for verification for younger players.

The number is part of the account-verification flow; it is not a substitute for the persistent internet connection GameChat needs. If setup stops at the connection test, address the network prompt first. If it stops at verification, check that the registered number can receive the text and follow the on-screen instructions.
Friend approval is mutual. Adding someone or selecting an invite does not mean GameChat approval is complete if the other person has not approved you too. If a friend is missing from the people you can chat with, confirm that both accounts have completed the approval process before treating it as a screen-sharing problem.
Start or join a GameChat room
From the C Menu, choose a user and then either create a chat or join an available one. When you create a chat, you can invite up to 11 friends, for a maximum of 12 participants in the room. You can also join a chat that is available to you.
A room can include more people than can share video or a game screen at once. Up to four participants in total can use video chat and/or share their screens concurrently; other participants can still take part in audio chat. If all four sharing slots are occupied, someone needs to stop sharing a screen or video before another participant can use one.
The four-person limit is shared between video and screen sharing, not four screen shares plus four camera feeds. For example, if two people are sharing their games and two others are using video, all four visual slots are occupied. Another person may still join the 12-person room and participate in audio, but cannot start a screen share or video until one of those four participants stops using a visual feature. A slot becomes available when someone stops video or screen sharing.
This is useful to know before asking someone to troubleshoot their console. If the room has reached the visual limit, the absent screen may have nothing to do with that player’s game, camera, or connection. Ask who is currently sharing or using video, then free a slot and try again.
Share your Switch 2 game screen
- Join or start a GameChat room.
- While in the room, press the C Button to open the C Menu.
- Select the Share Game Screen icon.
- Return to your game. If the screen can be shared, the other participants can view your gameplay.
Screen sharing sends your game display to people in the GameChat room. It is separate from video chat: you do not need to connect a camera to share gameplay. The C Menu is also where Nintendo provides camera and screen-sharing controls if you want to adjust what you are sharing.
There is one primary way to start a share: select Share Game Screen from the C Menu while you are in the room. You do not need to launch a separate streaming application or buy a camera to enable it. If you want to stop or adjust the outgoing share, return to the C Menu and use its sharing controls. The exact choice to use depends on whether you want to stop screen sharing, change camera use or adjust another sharing setting shown there.
Starting a share does not guarantee that every screen will be transmitted. If the game is displaying a restricted section, follow the console message and return to a screen that can be shared. The game’s shareable sections can vary; Nintendo’s guidance does not provide a universal list of every title or scene that can be shown.
What other people can see—and what your captures save
Not every console screen can be shared. Nintendo blocks some screens, including system settings and restricted sections of games. Sharing may also turn off automatically when you enter sensitive information, such as a password or payment details. If you see “Current screen can’t be shared,” return to a shareable game screen and try again.

A privacy safeguard may interrupt the outgoing feed when the console detects sensitive entry. That can happen while you are entering a password or payment details. It is not necessarily a sign that GameChat has disconnected or that the other players have left the room. Once you have left the sensitive screen, return to a shareable game screen and check the C Menu’s sharing controls.
Your own screen layout and the feed you send to the room are different things. Changing how other members appear on your display does not necessarily stop your outgoing screen share. To stop or change your share, use the sharing controls in the C Menu rather than assuming a local layout change ended transmission.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis distinction matters in both directions: changing what you see locally is not the same as changing what you send to friends. If you want to stop transmitting gameplay, use the share controls directly and check the room status, rather than relying on a layout adjustment. If you are trying to bring a friend’s screen into view on your own display, that local change does not automatically free a sharing slot or stop your own outgoing feed.
Console screenshots and video recordings made during GameChat capture only your own gameplay. They do not include friends’ audio, shared screens or video feeds, and Nintendo says audio recording is not possible. Do not treat a console capture as a recording of the whole GameChat session.
Nintendo’s support wording is explicit: “When taking a screen capture or video during GameChat, only your gameplay is captured: any audio, shared screens, or video feeds from friends will not be included.” If you need to remember what a friend said or preserve their shared screen, a console capture made during GameChat will not do that. The same limitation applies to audio: Nintendo says audio recording is not possible through these captures.
Do you need a camera?
No camera is needed for gameplay screen sharing. A camera is only relevant if you also want to use video chat. Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is one option; Nintendo does not guarantee that typical third-party USB cameras will work. If you want to use a third-party camera, check it with the console’s Test USB Camera setting rather than assuming compatibility.

Decide whether you want other participants to see your video before buying or connecting a camera; it does not unlock the Share Game Screen feature.
If you do want video, the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is the specifically named Nintendo option in the support guidance. A third-party USB camera may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility for typical third-party models. Check a device using Test USB Camera in system settings rather than relying on its connector or a general USB-camera label. That compatibility check is about video chat; it does not affect the screen-sharing steps.
For a player who only wants to show a game and talk with friends, there is no need to purchase a camera. The built-in microphone supports voice chat, while the game image is shared using the C Menu. A camera is an optional addition for face-to-face video, not a requirement for GameChat voice or screen sharing.
If you can’t see a friend’s screen
Work through these checks in order. They address the limits Nintendo identifies for GameChat screen and video sharing.
- Ask the friend to check what is on screen. If Nintendo reports “Current screen can’t be shared,” they should return to a shareable part of the game. System settings and some restricted game screens cannot be shared.
- Check whether the four-person sharing limit is full. Up to four people in the room may share a screen and/or use video at the same time. Ask someone currently sharing to stop if another person needs the slot.
- Check the connection. An unstable internet connection can prevent a share from appearing. Run the console’s network troubleshooting and retry once the connection is stable. Delay can also vary with network conditions and physical distance between participants.
- Check Nintendo Network Status. If the screen still will not appear, Nintendo recommends checking for service maintenance or an outage. Retry after any reported service issue is resolved.
If your own share stops when you enter a password or payment information, that can be an automatic privacy safeguard rather than a fault. Return to a shareable game screen and use the C Menu controls to check the sharing state.
When you are troubleshooting with a friend, identify which problem you are seeing before changing several settings at once. A “Current screen can’t be shared” message points first to the content currently on that person’s console. A full four-person visual limit points to the room. A connection warning points to the network, while a service outage or maintenance notice calls for waiting until service is available again. These causes have different fixes, so starting with the on-screen message can save time.
Connection quality can affect both whether a share appears and how quickly it updates. Nintendo notes that delay can depend on network conditions and the physical distance between participants. A delay alone does not prove that screen sharing is disabled. If the feed is present but slow, check the connection on the participants’ consoles and bear in mind that distance can contribute to latency.

If the service status is clear and the connection appears stable, check the room limit and the game screen again. A participant may have moved into a restricted screen, or another participant may have started video and taken the last available visual slot. Once the relevant issue is corrected, retry the share from the C Menu.

Quick answers about GameChat sharing
Can I share gameplay without video?
Yes. Select Share Game Screen from the C Menu while you are in a room. A camera is optional and only needed if you also want video chat.
Can everyone in a 12-person room share at once?
No. A room can hold up to 12 participants, but no more than four people can use video and/or screen sharing at the same time. The remaining participants can join through audio.
Why did the share stop on a particular screen?
Some screens are restricted, and sharing may be disabled automatically while you enter sensitive information. Return to a shareable game screen and check the C Menu sharing controls.
Can a console recording capture the other players’ audio or video?
No. A GameChat screenshot or video captures only your own gameplay; it does not include friends’ audio, screens or video, and Nintendo says audio recording is not possible.
