Galaxy AI has two translation tools with different jobs: Live Translate translates phone calls and supported calling or messaging apps with translated audio and on-screen text, while Interpreter is for two people speaking face to face and shows each translation in a split-screen view. To use either feature, you need a compatible Galaxy model and software, and some languages require a downloaded language pack. The exact language and app list depends on your model, One UI version, region and app version.
Live Translate and Interpreter: which one should you use?
Choose the feature based on where the conversation is happening. Live Translate is the remote-conversation tool: it can translate a cellular call and, where supported, conversations in selected apps. Interpreter is the in-person tool: two people stand or sit opposite one another and read their translations on opposite halves of the phone’s display.
| Capability | Live Translate | Interpreter |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Phone calls and supported calling or messaging apps | Face-to-face conversations |
| Output | Translated voice and on-screen text during the call or app conversation | Text on the split screen, with an option to play the translation aloud |
| Screen layout | Standard call or app interface | One language on the bottom half and the other on the top half |
| How speakers take turns | Normal conversation through the call or app | Automatic microphone switching, or manual control with Tap to talk |
| Language packs | Some languages require a free download | Some languages require a free download |
| Availability | Varies by Galaxy model, One UI version, region and supported app | Varies by Galaxy model, One UI version and region |
Samsung describes Interpreter as a split-screen translation view that lets people standing opposite each other read what the other person is saying. Neither tool has an independent accuracy score published in the material available for these features, so treat the translations as assistance rather than a substitute for a professional interpreter in legal, medical or safety-critical situations.

Feature names and menus can differ between Galaxy generations and regional software. Many regional guides identify One UI 6.1 or later on supported Galaxy devices, but One UI alone does not guarantee that every model has every function. Samsung also documents model-specific restrictions, including exclusions for some Wi-Fi-only tablets. Check your phone’s software and the feature’s own settings before relying on it.

Confirm the software version
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone, then Software information.
- Note the One UI version and install any available system update through Settings > Software update > Download and install.
If Interpreter or Live Translate still does not appear after an update, the model, region or carrier software may not support it. Samsung’s regional documentation is the authority for your particular device; the language picker on the phone is the quickest way to see what is actually enabled.
Install language packs
Download packs from Settings > General management > Language packs. Samsung says downloads are free, but availability differs by region and translation results can vary by language. Install both languages needed for a conversation before starting it. A pack that is available on one Galaxy model or in one country may not be offered on another.
Supported languages and regional variants
Samsung’s current support pages list the following languages and variants. Names and availability can differ slightly between regional pages, so use the language menus on your device as the final check.
| Language | Variants or notes |
|---|---|
| Arabic | Arabic |
| Bahasa Indonesia | Indonesian |
| Chinese | Simplified Chinese; Cantonese and Traditional variants are listed separately in some regions |
| Dutch | Dutch |
| English | Australia, India, United Kingdom and United States |
| French | Canada and France |
| German | German |
| Hindi | Hindi |
| Italian | Italian |
| Japanese | Japanese |
| Korean | Korean |
| Polish | Polish |
| Portuguese | Brazil and Portugal |
| Romanian | Romanian |
| Russian | Russian |
| Spanish | Mexico, Spain and United States |
| Swedish | Swedish |
| Thai | Thai |
| Turkish | Turkish |
| Vietnamese | Vietnamese |
Samsung originally announced support for 13 languages at launch; subsequent downloadable packs expanded the list. That launch figure should not be used as the current total. A language can be listed generally but unavailable on your specific device or in your region, which is why the on-device picker matters.

How to use Interpreter for an in-person conversation
Interpreter is designed for two people sharing one phone. Set it up before speaking so each person can see the correct half of the display.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open Quick settings.
- Tap Interpreter. If the tile is not visible, tap the edit button in Quick settings and add it when your model allows that option.
- Use the two language drop-down menus to choose the language for each speaker.
- Tap the microphone beside the language of the person who is about to speak.
- Hold or place the phone so both people can read their own half of the screen. Your language appears on the bottom; the other speaker’s translation appears on the top.
- Speak in short, natural turns. Tap the other microphone when it is that speaker’s turn unless automatic switching is enabled.
Choose automatic or manual turn-taking
Open Interpreter settings and find Tap to talk. With Tap to talk enabled, each person manually presses the microphone before speaking. This is useful in a noisy room or when the microphones switch at the wrong time. With it disabled, Interpreter switches between speakers automatically, which is more convenient for a relaxed conversation but can be triggered by background speech.
Read, copy or play a translation
After a sentence is recognized, read it on the appropriate half of the screen. Interpreter lets you copy translated text and play the translation aloud. Use the audio option when the other person cannot comfortably read the display, but keep the phone positioned so the speaker indicators remain visible.

Interpreter history
Samsung says Interpreter history is deleted after 24 hours. If you need a record for a permitted business or travel purpose, copy the text during the session rather than assuming it will remain available later.

How to use Live Translate for a phone call
Live Translate works from Samsung’s Phone app when the device, region and selected languages support it.
- Open Phone and place or answer a call.
- On the call screen, tap Call Assist.
- Choose Live translate.
- At the top of the screen, select your language and the other caller’s language.
- Speak normally. The phone provides translated voice and displays translated text while the call continues.
Tell the other caller that an automated translation is active. Pausing briefly between thoughts and avoiding several people speaking at once gives the recognizer clearer audio. Proper names, slang, acronyms and heavily accented speech can be rendered less reliably than short, standard sentences.
Change Live Translate defaults
For persistent options, open Phone > More options (three dots) > Settings > Live translate. Samsung documents voice and language presets as well as controls to mute voices. Set the preferred language pair before a call if you use the feature frequently, then verify the pair on the live call screen because a contact or region may require a different selection.

Use Live Translate in supported apps
Samsung’s current regional documentation lists Live Translate support for Samsung Phone and these apps: Google Meet, Signal, WeChat, KakaoTalk, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, LINE, WhatsApp and Telegram. Samsung explicitly says the supported-app list can change.

There is no single universal button layout across these apps. Update the app, start the voice or video call, and look for a Live Translate or call-assistance control supplied by the Galaxy software. If no control appears, the app version, account type, region or Galaxy model may not be eligible even though the app is named in Samsung’s documentation.
What to do when a language or feature is missing
The Interpreter tile is absent
- Open Quick settings with two fingers and use the tile editor to check whether Interpreter is hidden.
- Install the latest available One UI update.
- Check the model and region requirements in Samsung’s support information. Some Wi-Fi-only tablets and other model-specific configurations are excluded.
Your language is not in the picker
- Go to Settings > General management > Language packs and look for a free download.
- Install the pack for both sides of the conversation, then reopen Interpreter or Live Translate.
- If the pack is not offered, it may not be released for your region, model or current software. Do not substitute a similarly named regional variant without checking the speaker’s intended language.
Live Translate is missing in an app
- Confirm that the app is one of Samsung’s currently supported apps and update it through its app store.
- Use the Samsung Phone app as a control test. If Live Translate works there but not in the third-party app, the limitation is likely app-specific.
- Remember that Samsung can change the supported-app list, and regional documentation may not match another country’s build.
The wrong person is being transcribed
For Interpreter, enable Tap to talk and have each speaker press the microphone manually. For either feature, reduce background speech, move closer to the phone and use short turns. Automatic switching is designed for convenience, not for overlapping conversation.
The translation sounds wrong
Check that the selected regional variant matches the speaker, such as Canadian versus France French or Brazilian versus Portugal Portuguese. Repeat names and numbers slowly, rephrase idioms in plain language and verify important details aloud. Samsung does not publish an independent accuracy benchmark for these features, and it warns that results can vary.

Remote call with a service provider
Set the language pair in Phone’s Live translate settings, then verify it from Call Assist on the actual call. Explain that the conversation is being translated and use short sentences. Keep a written confirmation of prices, dates or account changes rather than relying only on translated audio.
Group or overlapping conversation
Neither feature is designed for several people speaking simultaneously. Ask participants to take turns, or use a professional interpreter when multiple voices, confidential information or high consequences make an automated tool unsuitable.
How to keep the feature usable as Samsung updates it
- Recheck Settings > General management > Language packs after major system updates; Samsung rolls out newly supported languages and dialects as downloadable packs.
- Check the language picker instead of relying on an old list, because regional naming and availability can change.
- Review the Live Translate settings path after a One UI update: Phone > More options > Settings > Live translate.
- Before an important call or trip, make a short test call or conversation with the exact language pair and app you plan to use.
Bottom line: match the tool to the conversation
Use Interpreter when two people are together and need a readable, split-screen exchange. Use Live Translate for a Samsung Phone call or a supported app, where the Galaxy provides translated audio and text. Install the required language packs, confirm compatibility for your model and region, and verify the language pair on the device immediately before relying on it.
