Samsung’s Galaxy AI has two translation tools that solve different problems. Live Translate translates a phone call (and, on supported models, calls in selected messaging or meeting apps) while you talk. Interpreter translates a face-to-face conversation, putting each speaker’s language on a different half of the screen and playing the translated audio aloud.

The exact languages, apps, and menu labels depend on your Galaxy model, country or region, and software. Galaxy S24 is on Samsung’s US list of Galaxy AI-ready phones, while translation assistance is available on select Android 14 devices running One UI 6.1 or later. Follow the checks and steps below before assuming a missing option is broken.

Live Translate versus Interpreter

Choose the feature by the type of conversation you are having. Live Translate starts inside the Samsung Phone app through Call Assist and is designed for a remote call. Interpreter starts from Quick settings and is designed for two people who are together.

Check compatibility before you start

Galaxy AI is not enabled identically on every Samsung phone. Confirm these requirements in order:

  1. Identify the phone and software. Galaxy S24 appears on Samsung’s US Galaxy AI-ready list. Samsung’s support information describes translation assistance on select Android 14 devices with One UI 6.1 or higher. A compatible model can still lack a feature if its regional firmware or carrier software differs.
  2. Install system updates. Connect to a network, open the phone’s software-update screen, and install any available update. Samsung changes supported models, languages, and app integrations over time, so an older One UI build can show fewer options.
  3. Sign in when requested. Some Galaxy AI setup screens ask for a Samsung account. Complete that sign-in on the phone if the feature will not proceed without it.
  4. Download language packs. Samsung documents Settings → General management → Language packs as the language-pack management path. For Live Translate, you can also open Phone → Settings → Live translate → Language and download the language needed for either participant. A language that appears in a list may still need its pack installed before it can be used.
  5. Check regional availability. Language and feature support can differ by country, model, and software version. If a supported language or app is absent after updating and downloading packs, the limitation may be regional rather than a setting you can change.

For a two-person conversation, charge the phone and place it where both people can see the display and hear the speaker. A stand or case with a viewing angle can help, but no accessory is required.

How to use Live Translate on a phone call

Live Translate works from the Samsung Phone app. It translates what each person says and presents translated text while the call continues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Phone app and place a call, or answer an incoming call.
  2. On the active-call screen, tap Call Assist.
  3. Tap Live translate. If this is the first use, allow any requested setup or language download to finish.
  4. At the top of the translation panel, choose the language spoken by each participant. Set one language for your voice and the other for the person on the call; do not select the same language for both unless that is intentional.
  5. Speak normally. The phone processes each speaker’s speech, plays translated audio, and shows the translated wording on screen.
  6. Use the language controls in the panel if the participants switch languages during the call. Selecting the correct direction prevents the system from trying to interpret one language as the other.
  7. When the call ends, close the translation panel as you would any other in-call control. A later call requires Live Translate to be started again unless your phone’s current software presents a different call-assist behavior.

The translated voice is intended to let both parties follow a conversation without manually typing. Keep the phone’s microphone and speaker unobstructed, and pause briefly between speakers if the display appears to be catching the wrong voice.

Use Live Translate in supported messaging and meeting apps

Samsung lists Live Translate support in selected apps, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Signal, LINE, WeChat, Telegram, Meet, and KakaoTalk. Samsung says the supported-app list can change, and availability can vary by model, region, and software.

When an app supports the feature on your phone, open the app’s voice or video call, look for the Galaxy AI or Call Assist translation control, and select the two conversation languages. The control may not appear in every chat type or on every app version. If it is missing, update the app and phone, confirm that Live Translate is enabled in the Phone settings, and check Samsung’s current support information for your region. Do not assume that support for one app guarantees support for another.

How to use Interpreter for an in-person conversation

Interpreter is designed for two people sitting or standing together. Its split-screen layout lets each person read a transcription and translation on the side facing them.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers to open the full Quick settings panel.
  2. Tap Interpreter. If the tile is not visible, edit Quick settings and look for it among the available buttons; an absent tile can also indicate that the phone or software is not eligible.
  3. Choose your language under the bottom microphone. This is the language for the person holding or facing the lower half of the display.
  4. Choose the other person’s language under the top microphone.
  5. Grant microphone permission when Android asks. Interpreter cannot hear a speaker until that permission is allowed.
  6. Tap the view-mode control to turn the upper half of the display toward the other person. The two halves are arranged so each speaker can read their own side.
  7. Tap the microphone on your side, speak clearly, and stop when you finish. Interpreter displays the transcription and written translation and plays the translated audio.
  8. Have the other person use the microphone on their side for the reply. If you enable Tap to talk in Interpreter’s settings, each person must tap before speaking; this can reduce interruptions in a noisy setting but adds a deliberate tap to every turn.

If the upper and lower languages are reversed, reopen the language selectors and swap them rather than asking both people to change sides. The view-mode control changes the physical orientation of the upper display; it does not change the selected languages.

  • Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.

Interpreter settings you can adjust

Open Interpreter and use its settings controls to tailor a conversation:

  • Language packs: Download or manage the packs required for the languages you use. Some packs are large enough that downloading them over a reliable connection before travelling is sensible.
  • Voice styles: Select the available voice style for translated speech. The choices shown can vary by language and software version.
  • Recents: Review recent Interpreter activity where the phone’s current software provides that history control. Treat any displayed text as conversation information and protect the phone accordingly.
  • Tap to talk: Turn this optional mode on when both speakers should explicitly signal their turn. Leave it off for a faster back-and-forth exchange.

Menu names and the controls shown can change with One UI updates. If a setting described here is absent, first check that the phone is updated and that Interpreter is available for the selected region and language.

Languages supported by Galaxy AI translation

Samsung’s support lists include the following languages or regional variants: Arabic; Chinese variants; English regional variants; French regional variants; German; Hindi; Indonesian; Italian; Japanese; Korean; Polish; Portuguese variants; Romanian; Russian; Spanish regional variants; Swedish; Thai; Turkish; Vietnamese; and Dutch. The exact variant offered can depend on the country and feature.

Samsung Global Newsroom reported on October 14, 2026, that Hungarian and Malay were added to Call Assist, Note Assist, Interpreter, and Transcript Assist, bringing features such as Live Translate to 24 languages. Earlier launch documentation described 13 languages at launch, so an older article or phone setup screen may show a shorter list. The current list remains subject to model, region, and software differences, and a language can be available in one Galaxy AI feature but not another.

Privacy and data processing

Samsung identifies translation as an on-device function on supported devices. In Galaxy AI settings, the Process data only on device control lets you require on-device processing for supported Galaxy AI functions. Other Galaxy AI features may use cloud processing, so do not assume that every AI tool follows the same data path.

Before using translation for confidential discussions, open the Galaxy AI settings and review the processing choice shown on your phone. Also consider the ordinary privacy of a live call: the translated words appear on the screen and translated audio is played through the phone speaker unless you use a different audio arrangement. Ask the other participant before translating a sensitive conversation, and avoid leaving the phone unlocked with recent conversation text visible.

Troubleshooting common problems

Live Translate or Interpreter is missing

Check the phone model, Android version, One UI version, and region. Samsung’s documented baseline is select Android 14 devices with One UI 6.1 or later, not every Android 14 phone. Install updates, sign in to a Samsung account if prompted, and reopen the relevant app. A Galaxy S24 is officially listed in Samsung’s US support material, but even that model’s availability can vary by regional software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The language you need is unavailable

Open Settings → General management → Language packs, then check Phone → Settings → Live translate → Language for call languages. Download the pack if it is offered. If the language does not appear in either location, check the current regional support list; there may be no user setting that can add it.

Interpreter cannot hear either speaker

When Android displays a microphone request, allow Interpreter to use the microphone. Return to the app permissions if permission was previously denied. Keep the microphone opening clear, move away from competing noise, and tap the correct microphone for the person who is speaking.

The two halves are facing the wrong person

Use the view-mode control to rotate the upper half toward the other speaker. If the words are translated in the wrong direction, swap the languages under the top and bottom microphones; changing the view mode alone does not swap language assignments.

Live Translate does not appear in an app

Samsung supports only selected apps, and that list can change. Update the app and phone, start an actual voice or video call rather than a text chat, and check whether the app and feature are supported in your region. A feature working in the Samsung Phone app does not prove that the third-party app is eligible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The translation is inaccurate or confusing

Samsung cautions that translation quality varies by language. Use short, clear sentences, avoid talking over the other speaker, and confirm names, numbers, addresses, and technical terms by repeating them or showing the original wording. For a medical, legal, emergency, or financial decision, use a qualified human interpreter or another verified source instead of relying on an automated translation alone.

Which tool should you open?

Situation Use First action
You are calling someone who speaks another language Live Translate Phone app → Call Assist → Live translate
You are speaking with someone next to you Interpreter Two-finger swipe down → Interpreter
You are making a supported WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Signal, LINE, WeChat, Telegram, Meet, or KakaoTalk call Live Translate, if the current app and region support it Start the call and look for the app’s Galaxy AI or Call Assist translation control
You need each person to read their own side of the conversation Interpreter Set bottom and top microphone languages, then use view mode

Keeping the feature working as Samsung changes it

Samsung’s language and app lists are living support lists rather than permanent specifications. Recheck the phone’s Galaxy AI and language-pack screens after a major One UI update, when changing country or carrier, or when adding a new language. The October 2026 addition of Hungarian and Malay demonstrates why launch-era lists can be outdated.

For the most reliable setup, update the phone while connected to a network, download the required packs in advance, verify the language direction with a short test conversation, and choose the on-device processing option when it is available and appropriate for your privacy needs.
