On many laptops, the F1–F12 row is set to perform hardware actions—such as changing volume or screen brightness—when pressed by itself. The regular function-key commands then require Fn.
To reverse that behavior, use the option your computer supports: toggle Fn Lock, change the setting in BIOS/UEFI, or use Windows Mobility Center. The exact option depends on the laptop manufacturer and model; Windows does not provide one universal Fn-key switch.
1. Turn on Fn Lock with a keyboard shortcut
The quickest method is to enable Fn Lock. This changes the priority of the top-row keys so that pressing F1–F12 sends the normal function-key commands without holding Fn.
- Locate the Esc key. Look for a small padlock or “Fn Lock” symbol.
- Press Fn + Esc.
- Press F1, F2, or another function key to test the change.
- Press Fn + Esc again when you want the volume, brightness, or other hardware shortcuts to work directly.
Fn + Esc is common, but it is not universal. Other combinations and controls include:

If the shortcut does nothing, your model may not support Fn Lock, may use another key combination, or may require a BIOS setting or manufacturer utility. A missing Fn-lock symbol on the Esc key is also a useful indication that the shortcut may not be available.
2. Change the setting in BIOS or UEFI
When the keyboard does not have an Fn-lock shortcut, the setting is often available in the computer’s firmware. The option usually changes the top-row behavior before Windows even loads.
Open UEFI from Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Next to Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the restart, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart.
Open UEFI from Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart.
If UEFI Firmware Settings is not listed, restart the computer and use the manufacturer’s firmware key during startup. Common keys include F2, Delete, F10, and Esc, although the correct key varies by model.
Find the function-key option
The menu name and location depend on the manufacturer. Look for entries containing Function Key, Hotkey, Action Keys, or Fn Lock.

On many Lenovo laptops, save the change with F10 and confirm with Enter. The exact command may differ in your firmware interface.
With Lenovo Hotkey Mode disabled, F1–F12 work as standard function keys when pressed alone. The brightness, volume, and other hardware functions generally require Fn plus the relevant key.
Some Lenovo IdeaPad models use Lenovo Vantage instead of a BIOS option. On supported ASUS laptops, the equivalent control may be in ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys or MyASUS, where you can select F1-F12 instead of Hotkeys.

Some computers expose the top-row preference through Windows Mobility Center. This option is not guaranteed to appear on every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

- Press the Windows key and search for Mobility Center.
- Open Windows Mobility Center.
- Find Function Key Row.
- Open its drop-down menu and choose Function Key, Function Key First, or the equivalent option.
If Mobility Center opens without a Function Key Row panel, your computer does not expose this control there. Use Fn Lock, BIOS/UEFI, or the manufacturer’s application instead. Adding a generic Windows setting or registry value will not reliably create the missing option.
What to do when none of the methods works
Check the manufacturer’s control app
Some laptops manage the setting through a Windows utility rather than Windows Settings:
- Lenovo Vantage: check My Device Settings > Input & Accessories.
- ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys or MyASUS: look for a choice between Hotkeys and F1-F12.
- Dell: check BIOS settings and Dell keyboard or mobility controls for your specific model.
Download BIOS, firmware, and hotkey-driver updates only from the computer manufacturer’s support page. Search using the exact model number, not just the product family name.
Do not confuse PowerToys with Fn Lock

PowerToys Settings > Keyboard Manager > Remap a key > Add key remapping
For example, you can map F6 to another key or command. However, PowerToys generally cannot remap the physical Fn key or change the firmware-level interpretation of the top row. It must be running for the remapping to work, and the remap does not apply at the Windows sign-in screen. Elevated applications may also require PowerToys to run as administrator.
Why the function keys may still seem inconsistent
- The setting is model-specific: two laptops from the same manufacturer may use different controls.
- Fn Lock may be temporary: an outdated BIOS or hotkey utility can prevent the choice from surviving a restart.
- The key may be intercepted by an application: some programs assign their own actions to F1–F12.
- F1 may open Help: that is normal behavior in many applications and does not necessarily indicate a keyboard problem.
- An external keyboard may use F Lock: check the keyboard’s manual or its indicator light rather than the laptop’s BIOS.
Windows 10 still supports these keyboard methods, but Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The operating system no longer receives free security updates or technical support after that date unless the device is covered by an applicable extended-support arrangement.

Can I enable normal function keys from Windows Settings?
Not with a universal Windows setting. The top-row priority is normally controlled by keyboard firmware, BIOS/UEFI, or the manufacturer’s utility. Windows Mobility Center exposes the option only on supported computers.

Why does Fn + Esc not work on my laptop?
Your laptop may not support Fn Lock, may use another shortcut, or may control the setting through BIOS/UEFI or a manufacturer application. Check whether Esc has an Fn-lock symbol and search the support page for your exact model.
How do I use brightness and volume keys after disabling Hotkey Mode?
Usually, hold Fn while pressing the relevant top-row key—for example, Fn + F6 or Fn + F7. The exact key assignments vary by laptop.
Can PowerToys disable or remap the Fn key?
Generally, no. PowerToys Keyboard Manager can remap F1–F12 after Windows receives them, but it does not normally control the physical Fn key or the firmware-level Fn Lock behavior.

Does Fn Lock work on every Windows 11 computer?
No. Fn Lock is a keyboard and firmware feature, not a standard Windows 11 feature. The shortcut, BIOS option, and available manufacturer software vary by model.
The Bottom Line
Try Fn + Esc first. If that shortcut is unsupported, open BIOS/UEFI and look for Hotkey Mode, Action Keys Mode, or Function Key Behavior. Windows Mobility Center is a useful third option, but only when the manufacturer exposes Function Key Row. PowerToys can remap function keys, but it is not a substitute for Fn Lock.
