Forced connections is a practical way to push an AI brainstorming session beyond its first, familiar suggestions: start with a real problem, introduce a randomly chosen unrelated word, image, or object, and make the AI explain how its features could inspire different solutions. It is a useful exercise to try, not a proven AI creativity hack; the available studies do not directly test this technique with AI.
What forced connections means
Forced connections links a concrete problem with an unrelated stimulus to prompt associations that a direct, habitual approach might miss. In design education, the technique is described as using “an unrelated stimulus chosen at random, such as a word or an image, as inspiration for design concepts” (Journal of Engineering Education / University of Michigan Deep Blue).
A stimulus can be a word, picture, or physical object. A 2020 Frontiers in Psychology article describes selecting words from sources such as dictionaries, lexicons, professional books, or indexes. The important feature is that the stimulus is chosen randomly rather than selected just because it already seems appealing. From there, explore both direct associations (an immediate link to the problem) and indirect ones (a more mediated connection). The article illustrates the method with a car-rust problem and words including “window,” “plastic,” “water,” and “crocodile” (Frontiers in Psychology).
How to run the exercise with an AI assistant
- Define one specific challenge. Include meaningful boundaries so the AI has something concrete to solve. For example: “How might we help a remote team notice when a meeting is losing focus, without adding more meetings or surveillance?”
- Choose a random stimulus. Use a random word from a dictionary, index, lexicon, or book, a random image, or an object nearby. The point is to avoid choosing something that is already an obvious match for the challenge. An existing reference book or household object is enough; no particular purchase is required.
- Ask for attributes before solutions. Prompt the AI to list the stimulus’s physical features, behaviors, functions, or associations first. For a “crocodile,” for example, those might include camouflage, a protective hide, patience, and a powerful jaw. Starting with attributes makes the subsequent connections easier to inspect.
- Request two kinds of links. Ask the AI to connect each attribute to the challenge in two passes: first through direct links, then through indirect links. Require concepts based on distinct mechanisms or perspectives—not several rewrites of the same proposal.
- Make the AI explain each connection. Ask for a short explanation of how each attribute led to each concept. If the relationship is only decorative or hard to follow, the explanation will help expose it.
- Evaluate the ideas yourself. Compare each concept for originality, usefulness, feasibility, and fit with the constraints you set. Also check whether the set contains genuinely different approaches or mostly repeats one idea. Keep, combine, revise, or reject concepts based on your judgment.
- Repeat with another stimulus when needed. If the suggestions cluster around one theme, start another round with a different randomly chosen word, image, or object rather than asking for superficial variations on the same output.
What the evidence says about AI and creativity
Research on AI-assisted creativity offers reason to experiment, but not a guarantee that any particular prompting method will work. A 2024 study in Nature Human Behaviour reports five experiments in which participants used GPT-3.5 for everyday and innovation-related creative tasks. The authors found that ChatGPT use increased the creativity of generated ideas compared with no technology or a conventional web search. The tasks included choosing a creative gift for a teenager, making a toy, repurposing unused items, and designing an innovative dining table (Nature Human Behaviour, published August 12, 2024). Those findings apply to the participants, model, and tasks studied; they do not establish a general outcome for every model, prompt, or kind of creative work.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A 2025 Nature Human Behaviour paper reports a different consideration for group brainstorming: ChatGPT use increased average idea creativity while reducing diversity across the pool (Nature Human Behaviour, published June 18, 2025). If several people use the same prompt and accept similar first suggestions, the group may end up with fewer distinct directions. Generate ideas independently as well as with AI, vary the stimuli, and assess the range of mechanisms represented—not just the number of suggestions.
Neither of these studies directly tests whether forced connections improves AI-generated ideas. Treat the exercise as a structured way to explore associations, then judge the resulting concepts on their merits.
