To upload files with FileZilla, connect with the host, protocol, port and login supplied by your hosting provider or server administrator, open the server’s actual web-root folder, then drag files from the Local site pane to the Remote site pane. Watch the transfer queue until every item is successful, and verify the files at their expected URL.
The most important decision is the connection method: use SFTP when your server offers SSH, FTPS when it requires FTP protected by TLS, and unencrypted FTP only when the administrator explicitly requires it. A correct username with the wrong protocol or port will fail just as surely as a wrong password.

FileZilla Client is the transfer program; it does not create a server account for you. Obtain an account from your hosting provider or server administrator before attempting a connection. WordPress.org’s Advanced Administration Handbook describes the basic role accurately: FileZilla can upload or download files between a local system and a web server.
Have these values ready:
- Host: the server name or IP address.
- Protocol: FTP, FTP over TLS (FTPS), or SFTP.
- Port: the port specified for that protocol by the provider.
- Username and password: credentials for the transfer account, not necessarily the same as your control-panel or application login.
- SSH private key: required when an SFTP account is configured for key authentication rather than a password.
Ask whether the account is enabled, which directories it may write to, and which directory is the public web root. A server can accept your login while still preventing writes to the folder you selected, so the writable path matters as much as the credentials.

Choose the right protocol and port
Do not guess from a port number alone. Your provider’s connection instructions override the conventional defaults below.

FTP and SFTP are different protocols despite the similar names. Selecting SFTP for an FTP-only account, or selecting FTP for an SSH account, produces a connection error even if the host name is correct. FTPS is also not interchangeable with either one: choose the exact entry shown in FileZilla’s protocol selector and the mode documented by the provider.

Connect with FileZilla
QuickConnect for a one-time transfer
- Open FileZilla Client.
- Use the QuickConnect bar at the top of the window. Enter the host, username, password and port supplied by the administrator.
- Select the required protocol and security mode. Do not leave an old protocol or port selected from a previous session.
- Choose Quickconnect. Read the message log as FileZilla negotiates the connection.
- If a certificate or host-key prompt appears for a secure connection, confirm that the server identity is expected and follow your organization’s verification policy before accepting it.
QuickConnect is convenient for a temporary session, but it is easy to mistype a value each time. For a server you use repeatedly, save a profile in Site Manager instead.
Site Manager for a reusable profile
- Open File > Site Manager.
- Select New site and give the entry a recognizable name.
- On the connection settings page, choose the protocol and encryption mode supplied by the server.
- Enter the host and port. If the provider says to use the protocol’s default port, leave the documented default; otherwise enter the custom port exactly.
- Choose the appropriate logon type. Enter a username and password for password authentication, or select the key-file option and point FileZilla to the SSH private key for an SFTP account.
- Optionally set a default local directory and default remote directory if your FileZilla version exposes those fields. A saved starting directory reduces navigation mistakes, but it does not replace checking the actual web root.
- Select Connect to test the profile, then save it when the login succeeds.
Store saved credentials and private keys as carefully as any other account secret. If several people use the computer, consider a logon choice that does not permanently store a password and protect the private-key file with the operating system’s normal access controls.

Understand the FileZilla window
After a successful login, FileZilla divides the workspace into local and remote sides:
- Local site (left): folders and files on your computer.
- Remote site (right): folders and files on the server account.
- Directory path bars: show the current location on each side and let you move up or enter a known path.
- Transfer queue (bottom): lists queued, successful, failed and skipped transfers.
- Message log (top): records connection, authentication and server responses that are useful when diagnosing a failure.
FileZilla’s panes are independent. Clicking a folder on the left does not change the remote location, and selecting a remote folder does not select a local file. Always check both path bars immediately before starting an upload.

Find the server’s public web root
Uploading to the account’s home directory is not the same as publishing a file. The web server serves one specific document-root directory. FileZilla’s FAQ describes the common pattern: connect, navigate to the web root in the Remote site panel (often /public_html or /www), locate the files locally, and drag them to that remote directory.
/public_html and /www are conventions, not guarantees. Some hosts use a different folder, and separate domains or subdomains may have their own roots. The provider’s documentation or administrator is authoritative. If you do not see a documented web root, ask which remote path maps to the site’s URL rather than guessing.

Before uploading, inspect the destination listing. Check the spelling and capitalization of the directory, and make sure you are not inside a backup, log, temporary or unrelated site folder. A successful transfer into the wrong directory will not change the public site.
Upload files step by step
- Open the destination: in the Remote site pane, navigate to the documented web root or to the subfolder where the files belong.
- Open the source: in the Local site pane, browse to the folder containing the files.
- Select what to send: click one file, use the normal multi-select gesture for several files, or select a folder when the complete directory structure should be copied.
- Start the transfer: drag the selection to the destination in the Remote site pane, or right-click the selection and choose Upload.
- Resolve name conflicts deliberately: when FileZilla asks whether to overwrite an existing remote item, compare the local and remote names and choose the action that matches your deployment plan. Do not overwrite a working file merely because it has a similar name.
- Monitor the queue: remain on the transfer queue until the items move from queued or failed to successful. A window closing or a network interruption can leave part of a folder unfinished.
Dragging a folder preserves its contained paths beneath the destination. Dragging only the files inside it places those files directly in the current remote folder, which can produce a different URL than intended. If a site expects a particular hierarchy, compare the local tree with the remote tree before selecting Upload.
Uploading a single file
For one image, stylesheet, script or other asset, open the exact remote folder first, select the file locally, and use Upload. After completion, confirm that the remote listing shows the expected filename and that its size is plausible. Filename case and punctuation can matter to the server and to the URL used by the site.
Uploading a complete folder
For a new site directory or a batch of related assets, select the folder itself. Watch the queue for failures among individual children; a successful top-level folder entry does not prove that every file inside transferred. If the server connection drops, reconnect and retry the failed entries. FileZilla can resume interrupted transfers when the server supports resume.

Confirm that the upload reached the site
- Wait until the queue’s failed and queued tabs contain no items you still need.
- Refresh or inspect the remote directory listing and confirm the files are present at the intended path.
- Open the website URL that corresponds to that path. If the file is an asset, check the page or direct asset URL that references it.
- If the public site is unchanged, compare the URL’s path and filename with the remote path character by character before uploading again.
FileZilla’s queue distinguishes completed from failed work, so use it as the first checkpoint rather than assuming that a disappearing progress bar means success. For important deployments, record the remote directory and the names changed so a later rollback can target the same files.
QuickConnect or Site Manager?

Troubleshoot failed connections and uploads
“Connection timed out” or “connection refused”
- Confirm the host name or IP address has no typing error.
- Compare the selected protocol and port with the provider’s instructions.
- Check whether a local, corporate or server firewall blocks that port.
- Verify that the transfer account is enabled and that the server is accepting connections.
Do not repeatedly change random settings. A timed-out SFTP attempt will not be fixed by entering an FTP password; first establish which service the administrator enabled.

- Re-enter the username and password, paying attention to capitalization and stray spaces.
- Make sure the account is for the intended server, not a different hosting environment.
- For SFTP key authentication, select the key-file method, use the correct private key, and confirm that the matching public key is installed on the server.
- Ask the administrator to reset or re-enable the account if the credentials are known to be correct.
Permission denied while creating or replacing a file
The account may be valid but restricted to a different directory, or the existing item may not be writable by that account. Confirm the correct writable path and required permissions with the host or administrator. Avoid changing permissions blindly; an overly broad change can expose files or affect other services.
Upload reports success, but the website does not change
- Check that the remote path is the actual document root, not the account’s home directory or a similarly named folder.
- Verify the URL path and filename, including capitalization and extension.
- Inspect the remote listing for the new timestamp or file size.
- For a multi-file upload, look through the queue for individual failures or skipped conflict decisions.
If the remote listing is correct but the application still behaves differently, the remaining cause may be outside FileZilla; provide the administrator with the exact remote path and transfer result.

Files appear corrupted or scripts behave oddly
Confirm the transfer type required by the server and by the file format. Some environments distinguish text-oriented transfers from binary transfers, while others expect FileZilla’s automatic choice. Follow the server’s instructions rather than changing the setting for every file. Compare the remote file size with the local file and, where the server provides it, compare a checksum. A mismatch indicates that the transfer should be repeated before investigating the application.
The transfer stops partway through
Read the queue’s failure message, reconnect if necessary, and retry the failed entries. When the server supports resume, FileZilla can continue an interrupted transfer instead of starting from zero. If the same item fails repeatedly, test a smaller transfer and ask whether the account has a quota, path restriction or connection limit.
Security and reliability practices
- Prefer SFTP or the FTPS mode specified by the administrator because traditional FTP does not encrypt credentials or file contents.
- Use a separate transfer account with only the directory access it needs when the server supports that arrangement.
- Protect saved passwords, exported Site Manager data and SSH private keys. Do not paste them into chat, tickets or filenames.
- Verify an unfamiliar server identity before accepting a secure-connection prompt.
- Keep a local copy of files before replacing remote versions, especially configuration or application files.
- Upload during a controlled change window when replacing several related files, and confirm the queue before declaring the change complete.
- Use the administrator’s documented port and encryption settings even when a conventional default seems to work; server policies can differ.
A practical upload checklist
- Obtain the host, protocol, port, username, password or SFTP key, and the documented web-root path.
- Open FileZilla and connect with QuickConnect or a tested Site Manager profile.
- Confirm that the Local site pane shows the intended source and the Remote site pane shows the intended destination.
- Navigate to
/public_html,/www, or the provider-specified equivalent. - Select the required files or folders and choose Upload or drag them to the remote pane.
- Review overwrite decisions and watch the transfer queue until no required item is queued or failed.
- Inspect the remote listing and open the corresponding website URL.
- If anything fails, use the exact queue or message-log error to check the protocol, port, credentials, permissions, path and transfer type in that order.
When these checks pass, FileZilla has done its part: the files are in the server directory that maps to your site, and the queue confirms whether each requested item arrived.
