Turn on FileVault from Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault, authenticate as an administrator, and choose how you will recover the encrypted startup disk. You can authorize your Apple Account to unlock it or generate a separate recovery key. The second option gives you direct control, but losing both your login-password recovery path and that key can make the files and settings permanently inaccessible.

Apple silicon and T2-equipped Macs already encrypt their internal storage at the hardware level. FileVault still matters on those models because it changes the protection of the volume key so a user credential is required before the data can be unlocked. Macs without Apple silicon or a T2 chip need FileVault enabled to encrypt their startup data.

What FileVault protects—and what it adds on newer Macs

FileVault is macOS’s full-volume encryption system. It encrypts the startup volume with AES-XTS, so someone who removes the storage or starts the Mac from another environment cannot simply browse the user data. The encryption applies to data written after FileVault is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exact benefit depends on the Mac’s hardware:

Mac hardware Storage encryption before FileVault What enabling FileVault adds
Apple silicon Internal storage is encrypted automatically; key handling is tied to the Secure Enclave. The volume key is protected by the user’s password together with the hardware UID, so credentials are required to unlock the data.
Intel Mac with a T2 chip Internal storage is encrypted automatically through the T2 security architecture. FileVault adds credential-gated protection for the encrypted volume.
Intel Mac without T2 FileVault is required to encrypt the startup data. Enables full-volume encryption and credential-gated unlock.

Apple explains the key-management distinction in its FileVault security guide. On Apple silicon and T2 systems, the encryption keys are not directly exposed to the CPU. FileVault is therefore an additional access-control layer, not a redundant switch that can be ignored on a modern Mac.

Is your Mac already encrypted?

Most Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip encrypt internal storage automatically, even when the FileVault setting is off. That does not mean every user can unlock the volume after a shutdown. With FileVault off, Apple says the volume key on these systems is protected only by the hardware UID. Turning FileVault on adds the user-password component and makes a user credential part of the unlock process.

An older Intel Mac without T2 does not receive that automatic storage-encryption layer. For those models, enabling FileVault is the step that encrypts the startup data. If you are unsure which hardware your Mac has, check Apple menu > About This Mac and then verify the FileVault status in System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault. The setting itself is the practical confirmation of whether FileVault is active.

FileVault is designed to protect data when the Mac is powered off, restarted, lost, or stolen. It does not prevent malware or an already logged-in user from reading files, and it does not replace macOS updates, a strong login password, or backups.

Check these conditions before enabling FileVault

  • Have an administrator account available. macOS requires administrator authentication to change FileVault settings.
  • Know which recovery route you want. The setup assistant presents an Apple Account option and, on supported configurations, a generated recovery-key option. Decide who will be responsible for account access or key storage before continuing.
  • Make sure you can reach the Mac after a restart. FileVault can require a pre-boot unlock before macOS loads. Confirm that the account you use regularly is enabled to unlock the disk.
  • Identify additional users. Their files are encrypted with the volume, but each user may need to be explicitly enabled to unlock it at startup.
  • Check whether the Mac belongs to an employer or school. A managed Mac may have a recovery policy and an escrowed personal recovery key controlled by the organization. Contact the administrator before changing or replacing that setup.

FileVault protects the encrypted volume; it does not replace a backup. Keep a current backup before changing security settings so you can recover from hardware failure or an unrelated account problem. Encryption also does not prove that a previously deleted file has been destroyed, as Apple notes that some data deleted before FileVault was enabled may remain recoverable with forensic tools.

Turn on FileVault in System Settings

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & Security in the sidebar, then select FileVault.
  3. Choose Turn On (or the equivalent enable control shown by your macOS version) and authenticate when macOS asks for an administrator password.
  4. Choose the recovery method presented on screen: allow your Apple Account to unlock the disk, or create a recovery key without using the Apple Account.
  5. Read the confirmation carefully. If a key is generated, copy every character exactly and store it away from the Mac and its encrypted startup disk before completing setup.

macOS then begins protecting the volume. You can continue using the Mac while encryption proceeds, although completion time depends on the amount of data and the Mac’s storage. Keep the Mac connected to power and avoid interrupting a restart that is part of the process. Do not assume that closing the lid or signing out is equivalent to finishing setup; return to FileVault settings and confirm the status when the process has had time to complete.

Enable other users who need to start the Mac

If FileVault shows an Enable Users control, select it, choose each additional account that should be allowed to unlock the disk, and enter that account’s login password. A user who has not been enabled may still have an encrypted home directory, but cannot necessarily pass the FileVault unlock screen after a restart. Apple documents this account-specific step in its FileVault setup guide.

Enable only people who genuinely need pre-boot access. The password entered during this step must be the user’s current login password. If that password changes later, the user should sign in normally and follow any prompt macOS presents to update their FileVault unlock authorization. A person who can use the Mac after another administrator unlocks it is not automatically a person who can unlock the encrypted disk at startup.

Choose the recovery method that matches your responsibilities

The recovery choice is a trade-off between convenience and personal control. It is not the same as choosing a stronger or weaker encryption algorithm; both routes protect the same encrypted volume.

Recovery route How recovery works Main dependency Your responsibility
Apple Account Your Apple Account can be used to unlock the disk through the recovery flow. You must retain access to that Apple Account and its account-recovery methods. Keep the account secure and its recovery information current.
Generated recovery key macOS creates a key that can unlock the encrypted volume when the login password cannot. The exact key must remain available; Apple Account access is not a substitute for it. Copy and protect the key separately from the Mac.

For a personal Mac, the Apple Account route is usually simpler for people who already maintain reliable account access. A self-managed key can be preferable when you do not want disk recovery to depend on an online account, but it makes safekeeping and transcription your responsibility. Apple describes both routes in FileVault recovery options.

Think through the failure scenario before choosing. If the Mac is offline, can you still reach the account-recovery methods you need? If you choose a key, can a trusted person or estate plan locate it without leaving it beside the computer? Neither route is automatically safer in every household; the safer route is the one you can reliably maintain and keep confidential.

Protect and verify a FileVault recovery key

Recognize the key correctly

Apple’s 2026 FileVault security documentation describes the generated key as 24 random numbers and letters. It is a FileVault volume-unlock key, not your login password and not an Apple Account recovery key. Treat those credentials as separate items even if they are stored in the same password manager.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

View the key on the Mac

On a Mac using the self-managed-key route, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault to view the recovery-key information. Apple also says the key can be stored in the Passwords app; when iCloud Keychain is enabled, it can synchronize with your other passwords. If you do not use iCloud Keychain, keep the presented key in another safe location. The dedicated FileVault recovery-key guide lists these locations.

Store it away from the encrypted Mac

Do not leave the only copy in a file on the Mac, in a note beside the computer, or in a place where someone who takes the Mac could find it. If you write the key down, copy each character exactly and keep the copy somewhere other than the encrypted startup disk. A secure password manager, a physically protected location, or an organization’s approved escrow system can be appropriate depending on who owns the Mac; the essential property is that the recovery copy remains available when the Mac is unavailable.

Do not email the key to yourself or paste it into an ordinary chat as a convenience. If you make a paper copy, check ambiguous characters carefully and store it where fire, theft, and casual visitors are considered. If you move the key to a password manager, confirm that the entry was saved and can be retrieved from another trusted device. Keeping multiple protected copies is sensible, but every additional copy increases the number of places that must remain secure.

Check for a conditional copy on another device

For a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Apple says a missing FileVault key might be available in the Passwords app on another device signed in to the same Apple Account, provided iCloud Passwords & Keychain is enabled. This is conditional: it does not create a copy if the key was never saved or synchronized. It also does not turn an Apple Account recovery key into a FileVault key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if you lose the password or recovery key?

First use Apple’s current instructions for resetting a forgotten Mac login password: If you’ve forgotten your Mac login password. The reset process may give you a route back into the account without using the FileVault recovery key. Try the reset options shown for your macOS version rather than repeatedly guessing passwords at the unlock screen.

If you cannot reset the login password and also cannot produce the FileVault recovery key or the configured Apple Account recovery route, the encrypted volume cannot be unlocked through a normal user action. Apple’s warning is explicit: If you turn on FileVault and then forget your login password and can’t reset it, and you also forget your recovery key, you won’t be able to log in, and your files and settings will be lost forever. Do not erase the Mac while trying random keys; erasure removes the encrypted data rather than recovering it.

On a company- or school-owned Mac, stop troubleshooting locally and contact the administrator. The organization may hold an escrowed personal recovery key or have a documented unlock process that is not visible in your personal settings.

Confirm the setting and user access after setup

Return to System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault to verify that FileVault is enabled and to review the configured recovery information. If the Mac has several accounts, confirm that every person who must start the computer has been enabled through Enable Users. Have each user sign in with the password they will actually remember; enabling an account with an outdated password creates a recovery problem at the next restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test your recovery plan before an emergency without intentionally locking yourself out: verify that the Apple Account can be signed in to from a separate trusted device, or verify that the recorded key matches the key displayed in FileVault settings. Do not disclose the key while testing or send it through ordinary email or chat. A test should confirm access to the record, not involve deliberately changing the login password or erasing the Mac.

How FileVault encryption works—and its limits

FileVault uses AES-XTS for full-volume encryption. On Apple silicon and T2 Macs, the Secure Enclave participates in protecting internal-storage keys, and the hardware UID is part of the key-protection design. With FileVault off, Apple says the volume key on these Macs is protected only by the hardware UID. Turning FileVault on combines the user’s password with that UID, making the password or an approved recovery method necessary to decrypt the volume.

Encryption is not retroactive forensic wiping. Apple notes that data written after FileVault is enabled is encrypted, while data that had already been deleted before enablement may remain recoverable with forensic data-recovery tools. If you are securing a Mac that contained sensitive material, FileVault is essential for future protection but should not be described as proof that every previously deleted file has been destroyed.

FileVault also does not encrypt every external disk automatically. The procedure described here concerns the Mac’s encrypted startup volume. Use the appropriate encryption feature for an external drive and maintain separate recovery information for it; do not assume the FileVault key unlocks unrelated storage.

When the Mac is managed by an employer or school

Organization-owned Macs can be configured through device management rather than through an individual’s preferred recovery choice. An administrator may enable FileVault, set the recovery policy, and escrow a personal recovery key so the help desk can assist with an unlock. Apple’s deployment documentation recommends personal recovery keys for modern management and describes limits affecting institutional keys, particularly on Apple silicon.

Situation Who controls the recovery setup What you should do
Personal Mac You choose the Apple Account or self-managed-key route offered in FileVault settings. Maintain the selected account or key independently of the Mac.
Employer- or school-managed Mac The organization may configure FileVault and escrow the personal key through device management. Follow the organization’s instructions and contact its administrator for an unlock or key replacement.

Do not erase or reconfigure a managed Mac to bypass a policy. Start with Apple’s administrator guidance for managing FileVault with device management and managing FileVault in macOS, then use the procedure supplied by your organization.

Ask the administrator who is authorized to retrieve the personal recovery key, how identity is verified, and what happens when the device changes owners. Do not create a second, unofficial key record that conflicts with the organization’s escrow process. A management profile can also change which controls appear in FileVault settings, so a missing Apple Account option is not necessarily an error.

Advanced note: remote unlock after a restart

Apple documents a specialized capability for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 26 or later: FileVault can be unlocked over SSH after a restart when Remote Login is enabled and the Mac has network access. This is an administration feature, not part of the ordinary home-user setup. It requires the remote-login configuration and an account authorized to unlock the disk; without those prerequisites, the normal pre-boot unlock screen remains the expected path. Apple’s deployment overview is available in Intro to FileVault.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming hardware encryption makes FileVault unnecessary. On Apple silicon and T2 Macs, FileVault still adds credential-based protection for the volume key.
  • Saving the only key on the protected Mac. That copy is inaccessible precisely when the key is needed.
  • Confusing recovery credentials. A FileVault recovery key, Mac login password, Apple Account password, and Apple Account recovery key serve different purposes.
  • Forgetting secondary users. A user may have an encrypted home directory but lack permission to unlock the disk at startup.
  • Changing settings on a managed Mac without IT. Device management may escrow the official key and define the approved recovery process.
  • Treating FileVault as a backup or secure deletion tool. It protects the volume against unauthorized access; it cannot restore failed hardware or guarantee that old deleted data is unrecoverable.

Do I need FileVault on an Apple silicon Mac?

Apple silicon Macs encrypt internal storage automatically, but FileVault adds protection that combines the user password with the hardware-based key protection. It is not pointless on a modern Mac.

Where should I keep my FileVault recovery key?

Keep an exact copy away from the Mac and its encrypted startup disk, such as in a protected password manager or another physically secure location. Do not rely on a file stored only on the Mac.

How long is a FileVault recovery key?

Apple’s 2026 security documentation describes the generated key as 24 random numbers and letters.

What if I lose my FileVault recovery key?

Try the configured Apple Account recovery route and Apple’s current login-password reset instructions. On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, a key might also appear in Passwords on another device if iCloud Passwords & Keychain had synchronized it. If every recovery route is unavailable, Apple warns that the files and settings may be lost permanently.

Can another user unlock a FileVault Mac?

Only users enabled for FileVault can normally pass the pre-boot unlock screen. In FileVault settings, use Enable Users and enter each additional user’s login password when prompted.

Does FileVault encrypt an external drive?

The steps here protect the Mac’s startup volume. An external disk needs its own appropriate encryption setting and recovery information.

Who should recover a FileVault key on a work or school Mac?

Contact the organization’s administrator or help desk. Device management may escrow a personal recovery key and enforce a recovery policy that an individual user should not replace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Enable FileVault, choose the recovery route you can reliably maintain, and keep any generated key separate from the Mac. On a managed computer, let the organization control escrow and recovery rather than creating an untracked personal workaround.
