To open BIOS/UEFI Setup on most Dell laptops, restart or power on the computer and tap F2 about once per second as soon as the Dell logo appears. Keep tapping until Setup opens; if Windows starts, restart and try earlier. If F2 controls volume or brightness instead, try Fn+F2.
Open BIOS Setup with F2
- Save open work, then shut down or restart the laptop.
- Press the power button. When the Dell logo appears, tap F2 about once per second. Dell recommends tapping rather than holding the key.
- Continue until the BIOS/System Setup screen appears. Some models briefly display “Preparing to enter Setup.”
- If Windows begins loading, restart and start tapping sooner. On some models, an on-screen F2 prompt appears at the Dell logo and is active only briefly; follow your model’s user guide if its instructions differ. See Dell’s BIOS/UEFI access instructions.
When F2 controls brightness or volume
Some Dell keyboards make the top-row media action the default, so a plain F2 press may not send the F2 key function. During startup, try Fn+F2.
On supported keyboards, Fn+Esc toggles Fn Lock; press it again to return to the previous state. You can also change the function-key default in BIOS. Dell documents options such as POST Behavior > Fn Lock Options or Function Key Behavior, but names and locations vary by model and BIOS version. Dell’s keyboard guide describes these function-key options.
Other ways to reach BIOS Setup
Use the F12 one-time boot menu
At the Dell logo, tap F12 about once per second. Select BIOS Setup or System Setup, then press Enter. F12 opens a one-time boot menu; it is a route to Setup rather than a direct BIOS shortcut.

Start from Windows 11 Advanced startup
If Windows is available, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. Then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart. Dell also documents holding Shift while choosing Restart from the sign-in screen, or running the administrator command shutdown /r /fw /t 0 on supported systems.
Try restart instead of shutdown
Dell notes that Fast Startup can shorten the F2 window after a shutdown. If you are missing the timing, choose Restart and tap F2 as the Dell logo appears.

Use the model-specific button sequence on a tablet
For some Dell tablets without a keyboard, Dell describes holding Volume up while pressing and releasing Power, then selecting BIOS Setup. The button arrangement varies: some models use Volume down instead. Check the user guide for the exact model rather than assuming one sequence applies to all tablets and 2-in-1 devices.
If F2 still will not open Setup
- Confirm that you begin tapping as soon as the Dell logo appears; holding F2 can be less reliable than repeated taps.
- If the top-row key triggers a media action, use Fn+F2.
- Try F12 and select BIOS/System Setup, or use Windows Advanced startup if the relevant options are available.
- Check the exact model’s Dell user guide for special keyboard, button, or firmware behavior.
There is also a documented model-specific case: on the Inspiron 14 3420, Dell says the Qualcomm embedded controller can be in sleep mode and prevent F2 from opening Setup. Dell’s stated resolution is to update Windows to the newest version, which updates the BIOS. This does not establish that updating Windows will fix F2 problems on other models. See Dell’s Inspiron 14 3420 guidance.

Is it safe to look around in BIOS?
Dell says viewing Setup and exiting without saving does not trigger BitLocker. Changing Secure Boot, TPM, or boot mode can be detected as a hardware change and may prompt for the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key. If you plan to change firmware settings, Dell advises suspending BitLocker protection first when appropriate, then re-enabling it after Windows starts normally.
Changing an unsuitable firmware setting can prevent the computer from completing POST or loading its operating system, and may put data at risk. Change only settings you understand, and consult Dell’s documentation for your model. Dell’s BIOS and UEFI guide warns that firmware interfaces and procedures differ between computers.
