Dynamic Island is not a universal accessory dashboard. On a supported iPhone, it can display certain alerts and Live Activities while the phone is unlocked, such as a Voice Memo recording, an AirDrop connection or turn-by-turn directions in Maps. Information about a connected accessory may instead appear as a status icon, a notification or a settings screen. The right way to use an “accessory hint” therefore depends on the signal you are seeing.
Use the instructions below to tell a Dynamic Island activity from an accessory status indicator, expand or collapse an activity, and check battery information for AirPods or another paired Bluetooth device without assuming that every accessory reports a percentage in Dynamic Island.
What “accessory hints” on iPhone can mean
Apple does not use accessory hints as the formal name of one iPhone feature. In practice, people usually mean one of three different interface signals:

- A status-bar icon: a small indicator that describes a connection or device state. Apple lists an icon for connected Bluetooth headphones and a separate Bluetooth battery icon for the level of a paired Bluetooth device.
- An accessory notification or settings entry: for example, an AirPods low-charge notification or the AirPods charge information available under Settings > Bluetooth.
These surfaces are related but not interchangeable. Seeing a Bluetooth battery icon does not mean the percentage is also available inside Dynamic Island, and an accessory does not automatically create a Live Activity. Apple’s descriptions apply to supported iPhone models and to accessories that provide the relevant information.

Use Dynamic Island when an activity is already showing
Dynamic Island appears at the top of the screen on supported iPhone models. The phone must be unlocked for the documented alerts and Live Activities to appear there. You do not turn on a separate “accessory hints” switch; an eligible alert or activity appears when the relevant event occurs.
Expand the activity
- Wait for an activity or alert to appear in Dynamic Island.
- Touch and hold the activity.
- Read the additional details or controls shown in the expanded view.
This is useful when you need more context than the compact pill provides. For example, a Maps activity can expose more direction information, while an ongoing recording or AirDrop connection can show its current state.
Collapse the expanded view
- Place your finger on the expanded Dynamic Island activity.
- Swipe inward from either side toward the center.
The activity returns to its smaller presentation. Swiping inward is a collapse gesture; it does not end the underlying activity.
Switch between two activities
- Confirm that two activities are active at the same time.
- Swipe from one side or the other of Dynamic Island to switch between them.
Use this when one activity is visible but another is also running. Switching changes which activity is in focus; it does not cancel either one.

Where accessory information appears
Use the surface that matches the information you need. The table separates Apple’s documented Dynamic Island behavior from accessory-specific indicators.

The table’s distinction matters: Apple documents the Bluetooth and AirPods indicators separately from Dynamic Island. Do not expect a battery percentage to appear in Dynamic Island simply because the accessory is paired.
Check AirPods battery and respond to a low-charge warning
AirPods are an example of an iPhone accessory with documented charge notifications. The alert can appear on an iPhone or iPad when the AirPods are low on battery. It is not a promise that every wireless earbud or Bluetooth accessory will provide the same warning.
When a low-battery notification appears
- Read the low-charge notification on the iPhone or iPad.
- Place the AirPods in their case, or prepare to charge the case and earbuds according to your normal charging setup.
- If you need to verify the charge rather than wait for another warning, use the Bluetooth settings path below.
Check AirPods charge in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Open the AirPods case, or take the AirPods out.
- Hold the case or earbuds near the iPhone.
- Look for the AirPods entry and its available charge information in the Bluetooth screen.
Opening the case or removing the earbuds and holding them near the iPhone is part of Apple’s documented procedure. If no charge information is shown, first make sure the AirPods are the accessory currently connected to that iPhone; do not infer that the absence of a percentage means Dynamic Island is malfunctioning.

Understand Bluetooth headphone and device battery icons
Apple’s status-icon guide defines an icon for connected Bluetooth headphones. It also defines a Bluetooth battery icon for the level of a paired Bluetooth device. These are status indicators, not a guarantee that the accessory has a Live Activity.
Connected-headphones indicator
When compatible Bluetooth headphones are connected, look in the iPhone’s status area for the headphones-connected icon. The icon answers a connection question: it indicates that headphones are connected. It does not, by itself, establish a battery percentage.
Bluetooth battery indicator
When a paired Bluetooth device reports battery information in a way iPhone can use, the Bluetooth battery icon can show that device’s level. Apple’s description is about a paired Bluetooth device generally, but it does not say that every Bluetooth accessory reports battery state. A device may therefore show a connection icon without exposing a usable battery level.

Why percentages differ between accessories
- Battery reporting depends on what the accessory communicates to iPhone.
- The documented icon identifies a paired device’s reported level; it does not create a reading for hardware that supplies none.
- Dynamic Island’s support for alerts and Live Activities is a separate capability from Bluetooth battery reporting.
For that reason, avoid using the presence or absence of a Dynamic Island animation as a test of whether an accessory is paired or charged.

Recognize ordinary Dynamic Island activities
Not every item seen at the top of the screen is accessory information. Apple’s examples show why:
Voice Memo recording
A recording can appear as an activity while it is in progress. Touch and hold the activity to expand it, or swipe inward from either side to collapse the expanded presentation.
AirDrop connection
An AirDrop connection is another documented Dynamic Island example. The activity describes the transfer connection; it is not the same as a Bluetooth-headphones or Bluetooth-battery status icon.

Maps directions can remain visible as a Live Activity. If another activity is also running, swipe from one side or the other to switch between the two activities.

These examples demonstrate the interaction model, but they do not mean that every app, accessory or connection produces a Live Activity. Availability depends on the supported iPhone model and the activity being provided.
Troubleshoot a missing accessory hint
You expected Dynamic Island, but nothing appeared
- Confirm that the iPhone model supports Dynamic Island activities.
- Unlock the iPhone; Apple’s documented Dynamic Island behavior is described for use while the phone is unlocked.
- Check whether the event is one of the kinds that can produce an alert or Live Activity. A Bluetooth connection alone is not documented as a universal Dynamic Island activity.
- If two activities are active, swipe from either side to switch focus rather than assuming the second one disappeared.
You expected an accessory battery percentage
- Look for the Bluetooth battery status icon or the accessory’s entry under Settings > Bluetooth, rather than searching only in Dynamic Island.
- For AirPods, open the case or remove the earbuds and hold them near the iPhone before checking Bluetooth settings.
- Allow for the possibility that the accessory reports connection status but not battery level. Apple’s documentation does not establish battery reporting for every Bluetooth accessory.
You saw a status icon but interpreted it as a Live Activity
Compare the signal with the documented categories: a headphones icon indicates a Bluetooth headphone connection, while the Bluetooth battery icon represents a paired device’s reported level. Neither description says that the icon is an expandable Dynamic Island activity. Use touch-and-hold only when the item is actually displayed in Dynamic Island.
MagSafe charging is a separate indicator
On supported iPhone models, Apple says a charging symbol appears when charging starts with MagSafe. This confirms that charging has begun; it is not an accessory-hint setting and does not enable Dynamic Island battery reporting for other devices. Treat it as a charging indicator, separate from Bluetooth accessory status and Live Activities.

A quick way to identify what you are seeing
- Is it in the pill-shaped area at the top? If yes, touch and hold it. If it expands, you are interacting with a Dynamic Island alert or Live Activity.
- Is it a small headphones or Bluetooth battery symbol in the status area? Treat it as a status icon. Check the connection or reported battery state rather than expecting an expandable activity.
- Is it an AirPods low-charge alert? Use Settings > Bluetooth and bring the open case or earbuds near the iPhone to check the charge.
- Is it a MagSafe charging symbol? It indicates charging has started on a supported iPhone; it is unrelated to whether another accessory supplies a battery hint.
The practical rule is simple: use Dynamic Island gestures for activities that are already there, and use status icons, notifications or Bluetooth settings for accessory information. Apple’s documentation does not support promising that every accessory will appear in Dynamic Island or expose a battery percentage.
