To use Dolby Atmos in Apple Music, update your Apple TV 4K, connect a supported audio system or Apple/Beats Bluetooth headphones, then open Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and select Automatic. Start an Atmos-enabled song and confirm that the Dolby Atmos badge appears in Now Playing. If the badge is missing, the song version, Music setting, HDMI path or listening device is usually the cause.
These instructions apply to Apple TV 4K running the latest available tvOS. Dolby Atmos availability in Apple Music varies by country or region, and only selected songs and album versions are mixed in Atmos.
What you need before enabling Dolby Atmos
Apple Music’s Spatial Audio catalogue includes selected songs mixed in Dolby Atmos. Spatial Audio is the listening feature; Dolby Atmos is the immersive audio format used for compatible music. An Apple Music subscription is required, but not every song, release or version has an Atmos mix. A standard stereo version can therefore play even when the artist has another Atmos version available.

Apple’s current setup guidance is specifically for Apple TV 4K and the latest tvOS. Apple does not state a minimum Apple TV 4K generation or minimum tvOS build for this feature, so install the newest tvOS update offered by your device rather than relying on an assumed model cutoff. Apple Music service availability also differs by country or region. See Apple’s availability and feature notes in Apple’s Dolby Atmos guide.

Supported listening endpoints
Apple identifies these connection paths as compatible:
- One or two HomePod speakers configured as the Apple TV’s default speakers.
- A television with built-in Dolby Atmos support.
- An Atmos-compatible soundbar connected with a compatible television.
- An Atmos-enabled AV receiver and its connected speakers.
- Apple or Beats Bluetooth headphones paired with Apple TV.
HomePod mini is not a Dolby Atmos endpoint. It can be used for other Apple TV audio, but Apple explicitly says it does not support Atmos. Do not troubleshoot an absent Atmos badge by repeatedly changing settings if the only connected speaker is a HomePod mini. Apple’s supported-device and format details are in its Apple TV 4K audio guide.
Turn on Dolby Atmos in Apple Music
- Update tvOS. On Apple TV, open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software and install the latest update offered. Allow the Apple TV to restart if prompted.
- Choose and connect the listening system. Set up HomePod as the default speakers, use an Atmos-capable television, connect an Atmos soundbar or AV receiver, or pair Apple/Beats Bluetooth headphones. The endpoint must be connected before you test playback.
- Open the Music audio setting. Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos.
- Select Automatic. This lets Apple TV use Dolby Atmos when the connected system supports it and the selected content includes an Atmos version. Select Off if you want Music to avoid Atmos and use another available format.
- Play a known supported song. Open an album or playlist in Music and start a track that has an Atmos version. Avoid judging the setting from an arbitrary song, because many tracks are available only in stereo.
- Check Now Playing. Open the current track’s Now Playing view and look for the Dolby Atmos badge. The badge is the practical confirmation that this track is being delivered in Atmos.
If every track on an album is available in Atmos, Apple says the album detail page also displays a Dolby Atmos badge. An album without that badge may still contain individual Atmos tracks, so verify the current song in Now Playing.

How the Apple TV chooses the audio format
With Dolby Atmos set to Automatic, Apple TV 4K negotiates with the attached home-entertainment system. Apple states that Apple TV 4K “automatically plays sound in the highest quality that’s supported by your home entertainment system setup and that’s available with the content you watch.” In practical terms, the device cannot create an Atmos stream when the television, soundbar, receiver, headphones or track does not expose Atmos support.
The content and equipment are separate requirements:
- A supported television or receiver cannot make a stereo-only song display an Atmos badge.
- An Atmos-mixed song cannot play in Atmos if the connected endpoint or HDMI route does not support it.
- Automatic chooses the best mutually supported format; it does not force every track into Atmos.
Apple TV’s manual audio-format controls are under Settings > Video and Audio. Normally, leave format selection on the automatic behavior unless you are diagnosing a receiver or television compatibility problem. Apple’s format explanation and setup notes are available at support.apple.com/en-gb/102218.

Do not purchase hardware until you identify the missing part of the chain: the endpoint, the HDMI path or the content. Apple’s general compatibility list is in About Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos in Apple Music.
How to decide whether you need new equipment
Start with the device that produces sound today. If you already have an Atmos-capable television, you may only need to enable Automatic and confirm the badge. If you own a soundbar or receiver but Atmos is absent from Apple TV’s Audio Format menu, investigate HDMI inputs, outputs and pass-through before replacing anything. A direct Apple TV connection to the audio device can solve a pass-through limitation, provided that device can also pass the television’s required video formats.
If your only smart speaker is a HomePod mini, changing software settings cannot add Atmos support; the supported alternative is a full-size HomePod pair, an Atmos television, a compatible soundbar and television, an Atmos-enabled receiver, or supported Apple or Beats headphones. For a new purchase, choose the category that fixes the identified bottleneck rather than buying several components at once. An Atmos-compatible soundbar, receiver, television or HomePod is relevant only when the rest of the signal path and the track itself also meet Apple’s requirements. HDMI cables may be needed for the direct wiring Apple describes, but the cable must be used with compatible ports and equipment.
Connect a soundbar or AV receiver correctly
Soundbar and receiver wiring is the most common source of an otherwise confusing setup. Apple says most televisions do not pass Atmos through to a soundbar or receiver. It also says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos connection does not work over ARC.
Apple’s preferred direct-to-audio wiring
- Connect an HDMI cable from an HDMI output on Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the Atmos-compatible soundbar or AV receiver.
- Connect the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the television.
- Turn on the audio device and television, then select the correct HDMI input on each device.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and confirm Automatic.
- Play an Atmos-enabled song and check Now Playing for the badge.
This route lets the soundbar or receiver receive the Apple TV audio directly when the television cannot pass Atmos. It may not be the best physical arrangement if the audio device cannot pass the video formats your television needs. Check the actual television, receiver or soundbar specifications before choosing between direct audio connection and a television-first connection. Apple’s detailed wiring guidance is at support.apple.com/en-gb/102310.
Why ARC is a problem here
A setup in which Apple TV sends video and audio to the television and the television returns audio to the soundbar over ARC may fall back to a non-Atmos format. Apple specifically states that its high-bandwidth Atmos connection does not work over ARC. If your television supports eARC, its capabilities and the capabilities of the connected audio device still need to be checked; do not assume that any ARC-labelled port passes Atmos.
If Dolby Atmos is missing from Audio Format
On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. If Dolby Atmos is not offered there, Apple says the current home-entertainment setup may not be exposing Atmos support to Apple TV. Recheck the HDMI route, input and output ports, device modes and television pass-through capability before changing Music settings.

How to confirm a song is playing in Atmos
- Open Music and start the desired song.
- Open the Now Playing screen.
- Look for the Dolby Atmos badge alongside the track information.
The Now Playing badge applies to the track that is playing, not merely to the album, artist or subscription. If an album page carries an Atmos badge, Apple says that means every track on that album is available in Atmos. Without that album-level badge, inspect individual tracks because availability can differ by song or album version.
Do not use volume, a wider stereo image or a particular instrument as proof. Those are subjective listening impressions and can vary by mix. The badge is the reliable on-screen check supplied by Apple.
Troubleshoot a missing Dolby Atmos badge
1. Verify the song version
First determine whether the exact track is offered in Atmos. Search for another edition of the release, open the album details and look for the Atmos indicator, then check Now Playing after playback starts. A stereo-only version will not gain Atmos because the setting is enabled.
2. Verify Music’s setting
Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and make sure it is Automatic, not Off. After changing it, stop the track, start it again and check Now Playing.
3. Verify the endpoint
Confirm that the connected device is one of Apple’s supported paths: HomePod (not HomePod mini), an Atmos-capable television, an Atmos-compatible soundbar and television, an Atmos-enabled AV receiver, or Apple/Beats Bluetooth headphones. If the system is connected through an unsupported adapter or an older audio path, Apple TV may only expose stereo or surround formats.

4. Check HDMI routing
For a soundbar or receiver, connect Apple TV directly to an HDMI input on the audio device when the television does not pass Atmos through. Confirm that the receiver or soundbar output goes to the television and that both devices are set to the correct inputs. Avoid relying on ARC for Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos path.
5. Inspect Audio Format
Open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format. If Dolby Atmos is absent, the connected system is not currently presenting Atmos capability to Apple TV. That points to a hardware, port, cable, input-mode or pass-through issue rather than an Apple Music catalogue issue.

6. Restart the negotiation
After correcting a cable or input, turn the television and audio device off and on, or restart Apple TV, then reopen Music. HDMI capability information can be renegotiated after a restart. Test again with a track known to have an Atmos version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Atmos songs can sound quieter
Atmos and stereo versions can have different mastering, so an Atmos track may sound quieter when you switch between versions. Apple recommends enabling Sound Check to reduce perceived level differences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn Apple TV, open Settings > Apps > Music and turn on Sound Check. Then compare tracks again at the same volume setting. Sound Check changes level management; it does not add Atmos to a song that lacks an Atmos mix, and it does not change whether the Dolby Atmos badge appears.
Practical setup checklist
- Apple TV 4K is updated to the latest available tvOS.
- Your Apple Music subscription and service are available in your country or region.
- The exact song or album version has an Atmos mix.
- Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos is set to Automatic.
- The endpoint is supported: HomePod, Atmos television, Atmos soundbar and television, Atmos receiver, or Apple/Beats Bluetooth headphones.
- You are not using HomePod mini as the intended Atmos speaker.
- Apple TV shows the Dolby Atmos option under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format when using a soundbar or receiver.
- Apple TV connects directly to the soundbar or receiver when the television cannot pass Atmos, rather than relying on ARC.
- Now Playing shows the Dolby Atmos badge for the current track.
- Sound Check is enabled under Settings > Apps > Music if Atmos versions seem quieter.
What this setup cannot guarantee
Enabling Automatic is not a guarantee that every Apple Music song will play in Atmos. Apple’s instructions cover the compatible Apple TV 4K setup and supported connection types, but they do not promise a particular number of Atmos songs, a minimum Apple TV 4K generation or a specific tvOS version beyond using the latest available update. Track availability, album version and regional Apple Music availability remain separate conditions.
When all three conditions align—an Atmos version of the song, Automatic enabled, and an Atmos-capable connection—the Dolby Atmos badge in Now Playing is the confirmation to trust.
