Colorlib Error 404 V8 is a free downloadable HTML/CSS template for a dark, editorial-style 404 page. Its amber digits, charcoal background, Josefin Sans typography, short explanation, and home-page link provide a simple starting point—not a hosted page you can publish without changes. You need to tailor the copy and destination link, adapt the design to your site, and configure your server to serve the page.

What Colorlib Error 404 V8 includes

Colorlib lists V8 in its collection of free 404 page templates. The design pairs amber-colored numerals with a charcoal field and Josefin Sans. It is aimed at dark sites that want an editorial look rather than a generic error screen.

The page uses a concise explanation and a route back to the home page. That keeps the recovery path simple, but it does not provide the range of options a visitor might need if the home page is not the right destination.

What to change before using the template

  1. Rewrite the message. Use clear language that tells visitors the requested page could not be found. Keep the tone consistent with the rest of your site.
  2. Set the home-page link. Make sure it points to your actual site home page, including the correct domain and path. A template link should not be assumed to match your site configuration.
  3. Adapt the design. Check that the colors and typography fit your branding and remain readable against the dark background.
  4. Integrate it with your site. The download is HTML and CSS, so you or your developer need to add it to the site and configure the server to show it for not-found requests.

Colorlib’s guide describes the template and the need to edit its wording, activate the home-page link, adapt its design, and configure the server. It does not establish a universal server setup procedure; the exact configuration depends on your hosting environment and site platform.

Decide whether V8 fits your site

V8 is a natural fit when a dark visual style and a single, uncomplicated recovery link are enough. Before choosing it, consider how visitors are likely to recover from a missing page:

  • Palette and typography: The amber-and-charcoal treatment suits a dark site, but may not match a light or differently branded design.
  • Recovery options: The listed V8 description centers on a home-page link. If visitors need search, social links, or other routes, compare it with other designs in Colorlib’s collection.
  • Integration work: The standalone template requires site-specific edits and server configuration. Factor that work into your choice.

A useful 404 page is part of a site’s recovery path, but the available documentation does not quantify its effect on retention or search performance.

WordPress users: a separate plugin option

If your site runs WordPress, Colorlib documents a separate free project called 404 Customizer. It offers 20 designs and live editing through WordPress’s Customizer. This is an alternative implementation, not a WordPress version of the standalone V8 download.

Colorlib’s project documentation lists WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.4 as minimum requirements, stable tag 1.1.0, and GPLv3-or-later licensing. Its changelog includes an entry dated 10.08.2026. The documentation also says the plugin renders a real 404 response and adds a noindex tag. These details apply to the plugin only; they do not establish the standalone template’s license or compatibility requirements. Check the 404 Customizer project documentation for current compatibility and release information before installing it.
