Claude Artifacts work best as a conversational prototyping loop: describe a user problem, let Claude clarify the requirements, ask it to create an artifact, exercise the result, and request focused revisions. You can publish a selected version for feedback or export its code when the idea needs a fuller development environment. An artifact can make an interaction testable in minutes, but it is not automatically a production application.
This guide shows the complete workflow, explains AI-powered artifacts and sharing, and gives you a practical decision point for moving from a Claude prototype to properly managed application infrastructure.
What Claude Artifacts are—and why they are useful for prototyping
Anthropic defines artifacts as “self-contained pieces of code that Claude creates during conversations.” They appear in a dedicated panel beside the conversation and can contain a website, code, diagram, SVG, document, or interactive React component. Read the current feature description in Anthropic’s Artifacts help article.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThat combination of conversation and runnable output changes the usual prototype process. Instead of writing a complete specification, opening a separate editor, and wiring up a first screen before anyone can react, you can explain the intended user journey in plain language. Claude can ask clarifying questions, produce a first version, and revise it in the same thread. You still need to test the behavior yourself: a generated button can be misplaced, a state transition can be wrong, or an edge case can be missing.

Use an Artifact for a concept demonstration, an interaction test, an internal review, or early feedback. Plan a later handoff when the project requires durable user data, third-party services, strict security controls, production monitoring, or a larger codebase.
Start by defining the user problem
The strongest first prompt does not begin with a framework or a visual style. It explains who is using the prototype, what they need to accomplish, and what a successful interaction looks like. Anthropic recommends starting with the problem and allowing Claude to interview you to clarify the vision—for example, the intended age range of a learning tool.
Write a one-paragraph brief
Before opening Claude, write four facts:
- Audience: the person or group who will use the prototype.
- Task: the action they must complete.
- Success: the observable result that means the task worked.
- Constraints: device, accessibility, content, timing, or data assumptions that matter.
For example: “A 12-year-old learner needs to practice identifying fractions on a tablet. The prototype should present one question at a time, accept an answer, explain the result, and show progress through five questions. It must use large controls and avoid storing personal information.” This gives Claude a testable outcome rather than a vague request for “an education app.”
Let Claude resolve ambiguity
Ask Claude to list unanswered questions before it builds anything. Useful questions include whether the user can go backward, what happens after an incorrect answer, whether progress resets on refresh, and whether the interface must work with a keyboard. Answer those questions in the conversation so the decisions remain attached to the prototype.
Build the first Artifact
Make an explicit build request
Once the requirements are clear, ask Claude to create the artifact. State the interaction, the visible states, and the output you want. A prompt can look like this:
Build an interactive prototype for a five-question fraction quiz for tablet users aged 12. Show one question at a time with four large answer buttons. After a selection, show whether it is correct, provide a short explanation, and enable a Next button. Include a progress indicator and a final score screen. Keep all data in the artifact, use accessible labels and keyboard focus, and tell me what assumptions you made.
Requesting an artifact explicitly matters. Claude may otherwise return an explanation or a code fragment without producing the interactive panel. The result can be a self-contained React component or another supported artifact type, as described in Anthropic’s documentation.
Inspect what Claude generated
Read the short explanation alongside the artifact and identify its assumptions. Check the initial screen, the controls, and the data represented in the interface. If the prototype includes a reset, navigation, or score calculation, identify the state changes you expect before you begin testing. This creates a small acceptance checklist for the next step.

Test the actual interaction, not just the appearance
Interact with the artifact as a user would. Click every primary control, enter normal and unusual values, reload when relevant, and try the flow on the narrowest screen you expect to support. Anthropic documents real-time interaction and conversational debugging; practical testing is still your responsibility and does not guarantee correctness.
Use a test checklist
- Can a first-time user tell what to do without an explanation from you?
- Do controls show a visible response after activation?
- Are disabled, loading, success, and error states understandable?
- What happens with empty input, an out-of-range value, or a repeated click?
- Can the user recover after making a wrong choice?
- Can keyboard users reach and activate every control?
- Does the layout remain usable when text is longer than expected?
- Does a reset return every relevant value to its initial state?
Record failures as observable behavior rather than as a general complaint. “Clicking Next after an incorrect answer advances without showing the explanation” gives Claude a precise defect to fix. Include the screen or control involved and the behavior you expected.
Revise in focused conversational passes
Ask for one coherent change at a time. Anthropic’s guidance is direct: “Be specific about which part you want to change.” Examples include:
- “Increase the answer-button text and add a visible focus outline without changing the layout.”
- “Limit the explanation to two sentences and keep the current scoring logic.”
- “Add a 30-second timer that starts when a question appears and records a timeout as incorrect.”
- “When the input is empty, show an inline message and keep the Submit button available.”
After each change, repeat the affected test cases. A visual adjustment can alter wrapping or focus order; a state change can introduce a new path that was not present in the first version. If something breaks, describe the exact failure plainly or use the available fix action in the artifact interface. Each follow-up produces another iteration, so keep the conversation organized around a small set of decisions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep a stable baseline
When a version behaves correctly, note what must not change in the next request: “Keep the current question order, scoring, and final-screen layout; only add a retry button.” This reduces accidental regressions. For a larger change, make a separate branch instead of overwriting a working direction.
Branch when you need to compare ideas
Anthropic describes editing an earlier message to create another conversation branch. A branch preserves the original direction while allowing a different visual treatment, navigation model, or content strategy. Use branches for meaningful alternatives—for example, a single-page dashboard versus a step-by-step wizard—not for every color adjustment.
Name or otherwise record what each branch is testing. Compare them against the same acceptance checklist and keep the version that produces the clearest user behavior, not merely the one with more visual features.

Choose and share a specific version
An Artifact can have multiple iterations, but a published link corresponds to the version you select. Open the artifact’s sharing or publishing controls, choose the intended version, and review it once more in the state a recipient will see. Anthropic’s sharing documentation is at Discovering, publishing, customizing, and sharing artifacts.
Recommended Free Tools
Consumer sharing
Eligible consumer accounts can publish artifacts publicly. People without a Claude account may be able to view and use basic functionality, while signing in is required for some advanced features, including AI-powered behavior. A Claude user can customize a shared artifact into a separate copy, preserving the original. Public availability and controls can vary by account and can change, so check the controls shown in your account before distributing a link.
Work-account sharing
Artifacts created in Claude for Work are restricted to the organization and require a work account. That is appropriate for an internal review but not for an external usability study. Confirm the recipient’s account type and organization membership before treating a link as accessible.
Embedding
The sharing guide also documents generated embed code for publicly shared artifacts and an allowed-domains setting. Treat the domain allowlist and interface labels as changeable product features. Test an embed in the exact site and domain where it will appear, and provide the direct artifact link as a fallback if the embed is blocked.
Add AI behavior when the prototype actually needs it
Anthropic’s AI-artifact documentation describes enabling the Create AI powered artifacts setting and then asking Claude to add a text-based completion capability. The dedicated prototyping guide describes this feature as beta, so verify that the setting and eligibility are still present before giving a team a fixed procedure. The current guidance is available in Prototype AI-Powered Apps with Claude artifacts and Anthropic’s AI-artifact overview.
Ask for a bounded AI task
Define the input, the desired output, and the visible fallback. For example: “Add a text box where a learner can request a hint. Return a hint of no more than two sentences, never reveal the answer directly, show a loading state, and display a retry message if completion fails.” A bounded request is easier to evaluate than “add an AI tutor.”
Understand the documented limits
The general Artifacts documentation describes a limited text-based completion API. It also says artifacts cannot make external API calls to third-party services or use persistent storage. Consequently, an artifact cannot by itself become a durable customer-record system, a live search client, or a production integration with your existing service. Keep test data inside the prototype, or plan a separate implementation when those capabilities are required.

For an AI-powered shared artifact, Anthropic says usage is attributed to the person using it through that person’s Claude account and limits, rather than charged to the creator for other users’ usage. Do not promise unlimited requests: account limits still apply, and availability can depend on the user’s plan and the feature’s status.
Decide when to move beyond the Artifact
A prototype earns its value by reducing uncertainty. It does not need production infrastructure while you are testing whether the interaction makes sense. Move the concept into a fuller development environment when a requirement exceeds the artifact’s documented boundaries.
| Question | Keep iterating in an Artifact when… | Plan a separate implementation when… |
|---|---|---|
| Speed of iteration | You need rapid conversational changes to screens, copy, or a short flow. | The codebase needs coordinated modules, automated tests, or multiple developers. |
| AI behavior | A limited text completion is enough to demonstrate the interaction. | You need model orchestration, tool use, external data, rate controls, or detailed observability. |
| Data | Sample or session-only data communicates the concept. | Records must persist, be shared between users, backed up, or audited. |
| Integrations | The flow can be demonstrated without outside services. | The product must call a payment, identity, search, storage, or internal API. |
| Access | Selected reviewers can use the available public or organization sharing mode. | You need custom roles, a private deployment, contractual controls, or a guaranteed audience. |
| Security and operations | No secret keys or sensitive production data are involved. | Secrets, compliance requirements, monitoring, backups, and incident response are mandatory. |
Anthropic specifically points toward proper API-key management and more robust infrastructure as work advances toward production. Its prototyping guidance also mentions technical limitations in Claude.ai, including a lack of interleaved scripts. The cited guidance does not prescribe a particular host, framework, or architecture; choose those later based on your requirements rather than assuming the Artifact is a deployment target.

The result is a description instead of a working artifact
Restate the request as an explicit build instruction and name the required interaction: “Create an interactive React artifact with these screens and transitions.” If Claude asks questions, answer them before requesting the build again.
A control looks right but does nothing
State the exact trigger, expected state change, and current failure. For example: “When the user selects an answer, keep the selection highlighted, show the explanation, and enable Next. At present, the click produces no visible change.” Test that path again after the fix.
The layout breaks after a copy change
Tell Claude which text must remain intact and ask it to handle wrapping, smaller screens, or a scroll region without changing the interaction logic. Recheck the longest labels and error messages, not only the default text.

The AI option is missing
Feature availability can depend on account type, plan, rollout, and beta status. Check whether Create AI powered artifacts is currently offered in your account and consult the current Anthropic help page before redesigning the prototype around it. If it is unavailable, continue with deterministic sample responses to test the interface.

Data disappears
This is expected when the concept relies on persistent storage that artifacts do not provide. Use representative in-session data for the demonstration and document the storage requirement for the eventual application. Do not place real personal or confidential records into a prototype merely to make it look complete.
A recipient cannot open or use the link
Confirm whether the artifact is published, which version was selected, and whether the recipient is using a consumer or work account. Public artifacts may expose basic functionality without sign-in, but advanced AI features can require a Claude account. Organization-only artifacts require a work account in that organization.
A worked example: prototype a study planner
Suppose you want feedback on a study-planning flow before committing to a full app. Start with a brief: a student chooses a subject, enters available minutes, receives a three-step plan, and can mark each step complete. The success condition is that a first-time user can create and understand a plan in under a minute.
- Clarify requirements: ask Claude to resolve whether plans can be edited, what happens when the time is too short, and whether completion should persist after refresh.
- Request the artifact: ask for a three-screen interactive component—subject selection, time entry, and plan review—with sample plan data and clear validation.
- Exercise the flow: test a normal duration, zero minutes, a very large value, keyboard navigation, and the Back control.
- Revise narrowly: request an inline validation message for zero minutes, then separately request a more compact plan card.
- Try an alternative: branch the conversation to compare a single-page layout with the three-screen flow.
- Share for feedback: publish the selected version and ask reviewers to complete the same task without coaching.
- Capture the handoff: inspect and copy the code, record the expected states and unresolved requirements, and identify the persistence and account model needed for a real product.
The prototype answers a product question—whether the flow is understandable—without pretending to solve storage, authentication, or production operations.
Export code and prepare a handoff
The artifact view supports inspecting and copying code and downloading files. Before handing it to a developer, include the intended audience, acceptance checklist, known limitations, selected version, and any sample data assumptions. Call out behavior that was intentionally simulated, such as a fixed completion response or in-memory state.
Do not copy secrets into prompts or artifact code. If the eventual application needs an API key, authentication, persistent records, or external calls, move those responsibilities into a properly managed development and deployment setup rather than attempting to hide them in a shared artifact.
Final readiness checklist
- The user, task, success condition, and constraints are written down.
- Claude’s clarifying questions have explicit answers.
- The initial artifact contains the complete happy path.
- Normal, invalid, empty, repeated, and recovery interactions have been exercised.
- Each revision request names the affected control or behavior.
- Alternative directions are separated into branches.
- The published link points to the intended version and access mode.
- AI behavior, if used, has a defined fallback and stays within the documented text-completion limits.
- No persistent storage, third-party API call, secret, or sensitive production record is assumed to work inside the artifact.
- The handoff identifies what must be rebuilt with production infrastructure.
Used this way, Claude Artifacts are a fast, testable bridge between an idea and a validated interaction. Keep the conversation focused on user behavior, test every important state, and graduate the work when reliability, data, integrations, or security matter more than conversational speed.
