On desktop Chrome, open a text-heavy page in Reading Mode, then switch the Reading Mode view to Side panel. The original page stays visible while a cleaner, adjustable text view appears beside it. You can widen the panel, change typography and colors, hide distracting links or images, and use built-in read-aloud controls for spoken review. Reading Mode is not supported on every website, so interactive pages and incomplete extraction still require the normal webpage.
What Chrome Reading Mode and the Side Panel do
Chrome’s desktop Reading Mode extracts the main readable text from a webpage and presents it in a simplified view. The Side Panel option places that view beside the original page instead of replacing the page with a full-window reading surface. This is useful when studying because the source remains available for checking headings, diagrams, citations, navigation, or other context while you read a less cluttered version.
Reading Mode is a presentation layer, not a separate copy of the website. Its font, size, theme, line spacing, letter spacing, image visibility, and link visibility settings apply to the Reading Mode text only. They do not change the original page or other Chrome content.

Before you start
- Use the desktop version of Chrome on macOS, Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS for the side-panel workflow described here.
- Open the article, documentation page, or other text page you want to study in a normal browser tab.
- Keep the original tab available if you need interactive controls, forms, videos, maps, image galleries, account screens, or page-specific navigation.
Google notes that Reading Mode is unavailable on some websites and may behave unexpectedly on certain interactive or media-heavy pages. The feature is therefore best treated as a focused reading view, not a replacement for every webpage.

How do I open Reading Mode in Chrome?
Chrome provides several entry points. Use whichever is easiest to remember.
Open it from the page context menu
- Open the text page in desktop Chrome.
- Right-click anywhere on the page.
- Select Open in reading mode.
If Chrome can process the page, Reading Mode opens in the current view. Depending on your saved preference, it may appear full-screen or in the Side Panel.
Use the Reading Mode icon
When Chrome exposes Reading Mode for the current page, a Reading Mode icon appears in the address bar. Select that icon to open the simplified view. The icon may not appear when the page type is unsupported or Chrome cannot identify usable article text.

Use the More tools menu
- Select the three-dot More menu in the upper-right corner of Chrome.
- Choose More tools.
- Select Reading mode.
Use a keyboard shortcut
On macOS, press Command + Option + R. On Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, press Alt + Shift + R. If a shortcut opens something unexpected, another application or utility may already be using that key combination. Use the context-menu or menu entry instead, or resolve the shortcut conflict in the other application.
How do I put Chrome Reading Mode in the Side Panel?
- Open Reading Mode using one of the methods above.
- Open the Reading Mode settings controls.
- Find View.
- Change Full screen to Side panel.
The source webpage remains in the main browser area and the Reading Mode text appears in a panel beside it. Chrome saves this view preference, so later Reading Mode sessions can use the same layout.
Widen the study panel
Move the pointer to the panel’s border, then drag the border to the left. A wider panel gives long lines and larger type more room; a narrower panel leaves more of the original page visible. Choose the width according to what you need to compare. For example, a narrow panel can preserve a full source page while you check headings, whereas a wider panel is easier for sustained reading.
Pin Reading Mode for frequent use
If you open Reading Mode regularly, pin it to Chrome’s toolbar when the option is offered. A pinned control reduces the number of menu steps needed on future pages. Pinning changes access to the feature, not the page’s content or the Reading Mode text itself.
Move the Side Panel to another side
- Open Chrome’s Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Find the Side panel setting.
- Choose the available screen location you prefer.
This setting controls the Side Panel’s placement in Chrome. It is separate from Reading Mode’s typography controls.

How should I adjust Reading Mode for comfortable study?
Open the Reading Mode settings and change one control at a time until the page is comfortable at your normal viewing distance. The available desktop controls include:
- Font style: choose the typeface that makes letter shapes easiest for you to distinguish.
- Font size: enlarge text when you are reading on a distant display or reduce it when the panel is narrow.
- Color theme: select a light, dark, or other available reading presentation to suit the room and your visual comfort.
- Line height: add vertical separation when lines are difficult to track.
- Letter spacing: increase space between characters when dense text is tiring to scan.
- Images: show or hide images in the Reading Mode view.
- Links: show or hide links in the extracted text.
These changes affect text displayed in Reading Mode. They do not restyle the original webpage, browser menus, unrelated tabs, or other Chrome content. If a diagram, embedded table, interactive widget, or image is important to your lesson, keep the source page visible and switch back to it rather than assuming the simplified view contains every element.
Match settings to the material
For a long essay, a slightly larger font, increased line height, and visible links can make section changes and references easier to follow. For a distraction-free first pass, hiding links and images can leave only the prose. If a lesson depends on captions, illustrations, or linked definitions, leave those elements visible and use the source page for anything the extracted view cannot show. A dark or light theme changes the Reading Mode presentation, not the colors of the underlying website.
How do I make Chrome read a page aloud?
- Open the page in Reading Mode.
- Select Play in the Reading Mode controls.
- Use the playback controls to pause, resume, move to the previous sentence, or move to the next sentence.
- Adjust playback speed if the default pace is too slow or too fast.
- Open the voice controls to select or preview a voice.
- Add a language when you need spoken output in another supported language.
- Choose how text is highlighted during playback, if you want visual tracking while listening.
Chrome says natural voices for the current language download automatically. If that download fails, Chrome uses the system voice for that language instead. Voice availability and pronunciation can therefore differ by language and device configuration.
A practical spoken-review routine
For a first pass, use a moderate speed and let highlighting follow the spoken sentence. Pause after a section to write your own notes in another app or on paper, then resume with the next sentence control. When a spoken passage refers to a chart, form, image, or interactive element that Reading Mode did not carry over, stop playback and inspect the original page.
Previous- and next-sentence controls are useful when you need to replay a definition without restarting the whole page. Preview a voice before committing to a long session, especially when the page contains unfamiliar names or a language that is not your Chrome default. If a natural voice is unavailable after Chrome attempts its download, the system voice is the expected fallback rather than an indication that the page itself is broken.

Choose full screen when your priority is uninterrupted text. Choose Side Panel when studying requires frequent verification against the original layout or when you want the source page available while listening.

- Open the source: load the article or documentation page in a desktop Chrome tab.
- Check extraction: open Reading Mode and scan the beginning, headings, lists, and any section you need. Confirm that the important text is present.
- Choose the view: select Side panel when you need the source alongside the cleaned text; use Full screen for uninterrupted reading.
- Set the layout: drag the panel border to a workable width, then set font style, size, theme, line height, and letter spacing.
- Reduce clutter: hide links or images only when they are distractions. Leave them visible when they carry meaning for the lesson.
- Read actively: use normal reading or select Play for spoken review. Pause at section boundaries and record your own notes outside Reading Mode.
- Verify details: return attention to the original page for diagrams, embedded media, interactive demonstrations, forms, quizzes, payment steps, or missing passages.
This workflow uses Reading Mode for legibility while preserving the source as the authority for content that cannot be represented in the extracted text.

Use the two views deliberately
Start by scanning the original page so you know whether it contains a diagram, table, video, or navigation element that matters. Then open Reading Mode and compare its title, opening paragraphs, headings, and lists with the source. Keep the Side Panel open while you study when you expect to check terminology or context repeatedly. If the page is ordinary prose and you do not need those checks, Full screen gives the more immersive layout.
Do not assume that hiding an image or link deletes it from the website. It only changes what is presented in Reading Mode. You can restore the visibility setting later and still use the original page for the full set of controls and media.
Why is Reading Mode unavailable on this website?
Google Chrome Help states: “This feature is not available to all websites.” Availability depends on whether Chrome can identify and extract suitable page text. Google specifically warns that Reading Mode may be incompatible with, or work unexpectedly on:

When no text appears
If Reading Mode opens but the expected text is missing, select the relevant text on the original page. Google suggests that selecting text can trigger Reading Mode for that content. After it opens, inspect the result rather than assuming every paragraph, caption, table, or footnote was captured.
When the page is interactive
Use the normal webpage for tasks that require clicking controls, entering information, submitting a form, signing in, paying, answering a quiz, navigating a map, or playing media. Reading Mode is designed for reading extracted text; it is not an interactive mirror of the page.
When extraction is incomplete
Keep the original page open, compare the missing section with the Reading Mode view, and use the source directly for anything absent or misrepresented. Switching back is the correct recovery step when the simplified view does not contain the material you need.
A quick troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm that you are using desktop Chrome if you expect the Side Panel and desktop read-aloud controls.
- Try the page’s right-click menu, the address-bar icon, and More > More tools > Reading mode rather than relying on one entry point.
- If the shortcut does not work, check whether another application is assigned Command + Option + R on macOS or Alt + Shift + R on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS.
- Select the relevant passage on the original page when Chrome does not expose usable text automatically.
- Compare headings and paragraphs in both views before studying; missing text means the normal page must remain your reference.
- For forms, quizzes, payments, sign-ins, maps, galleries, forums, and video, return to the original page for the task itself.
These steps distinguish an unavailable feature from an incomplete extraction. A missing Reading Mode icon is not a signal to force the feature on an unsupported page; it is a reason to use the regular webpage or select a specific text passage.

- macOS VoiceOver: use VoiceOver with the left- or right-arrow command to move through the text.
- Windows and Linux: use the up- or down-arrow command, or Alt plus up/down, according to the active reading mode and screen-reader behavior.
- ChromeOS: use Search plus up/down.
Because shortcut behavior can depend on the operating system and assistive-technology settings, use the command that your platform exposes for moving through reading content. If a browser shortcut conflicts with another program, use the visible Reading Mode menu instead.
Reading Mode’s font, theme, and spacing controls are visual presentation options; they do not replace the navigation model or speech settings of VoiceOver, a Windows or Linux screen reader, or ChromeVox. Keep the original page available if an assistive technology exposes information that the extracted text omits.

- Tap Show Reading mode.
Android opens a Reading Mode sheet with its own controls. You can choose a Sans Serif, Serif, or Mono typeface; adjust font size; and choose a Light, Sepia, or Dark background. These mobile controls are distinct from desktop’s Side Panel setting, so Android readers should follow the Android path rather than looking for a desktop View menu.
The Android sheet is therefore a separate mobile reading experience, not a smaller version of the desktop panel. Instructions about dragging a panel border, changing desktop Side Panel placement, or using the desktop shortcut apply only to desktop Chrome.
What Reading Mode cannot guarantee
- It cannot process every website.
- It may omit or mishandle content that depends on interaction, media, images, forms, maps, authentication, or payment controls.
- Its visual settings do not alter the original webpage.
- Spoken playback depends on available language voices and may fall back to the system voice if a natural-voice download fails.
- A clean extracted view should not be treated as proof that every source element was preserved.
For reliable study, use the Side Panel when context matters, verify important material against the source, and switch to the normal page whenever Reading Mode cannot represent the task.
