If your Chromebook displays “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” Chromebook Recovery Utility can reinstall the operating system. Recovery is a destructive repair: it permanently erases files on the Chromebook’s internal storage, so back up anything you can before starting.
Use the Chromebook’s built-in internet recovery when that option is available. Otherwise, create recovery media on another Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome, using an erasable USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. The instructions below cover both routes, recovery-mode key combinations, and the documented errors you may encounter.
What Chromebook recovery does
Google describes the operation plainly: “Recovery removes and reinstalls the OS.” It replaces the ChromeOS installation on the affected device; it is not a file-repair operation and it does not preserve the Chromebook’s internal downloads, local files, or other data.
Recovery is intended for a Chromebook that will not start normally or that shows the message “ChromeOS is missing or damaged.” It is more destructive than ordinary troubleshooting. If you can still sign in, turn the Chromebook off and on first. If the problem remains, try a factory reset before using recovery. Google’s staged troubleshooting guidance is available in Fix hardware and system problems.

Back up before you erase
- Copy important files from the Chromebook’s internal storage to cloud storage or another location if the device still lets you access them.
- Check downloaded files and anything stored locally; these are not restored by reinstalling ChromeOS.
- Do not assume that signing in again will recover files that were saved only on the device.
Recovery permanently erases the Chromebook’s internal storage. The USB flash drive used to create recovery media is also erased during media creation, so move any files off that drive first.
Managed Chromebooks need administrator approval
A Chromebook controlled by a school or employer may have administrative policies, enrollment, or recovery restrictions. Contact the organization’s administrator before proceeding. The administrator can confirm whether recovery is permitted and explain how the device should be enrolled again afterward.
Choose internet recovery or USB recovery
Google documents two recovery routes. Newer supported Chromebooks may offer recovery over an internet connection directly from recovery mode. USB recovery is the fallback when the internet choice is not shown or the Chromebook cannot get online.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Consideration | Recover using internet connection | Recover using external disk |
|---|---|---|
| Where the recovery files come from | The Chromebook downloads them over the internet. | A recovery drive created on another computer supplies them. |
| Chromebook requirement | The model must support internet recovery and have internet access at the recovery screen. | No internet connection is required on the affected Chromebook during the USB recovery process. |
| Additional equipment | No second computer or USB drive is needed. | You need another Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome, plus an erasable USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. |
| Preparation | Enter recovery mode and select the internet option. | Identify the exact model, create recovery media, then boot the affected Chromebook from that media. |
| Availability | Not available on every Chromebook; older models may not support it. | Useful when internet recovery is absent or inaccessible, but older devices may still be unsupported or no longer recoverable. |
Google does not claim that one method is universally better. Choose internet recovery when the option appears and the Chromebook can connect. Choose USB recovery when it does not, or when you need to prepare the media on a separate computer. The choices and wording shown on screen can vary by model, so follow the labels displayed by your device.
What you need for USB recovery
Prepare these items before opening Chromebook Recovery Utility:
- The Chromebook that reports the ChromeOS error.
- A second Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed.
- An erasable USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of storage. Creating the recovery media erases the selected drive completely.
- The affected Chromebook’s model number. Google says it appears at the bottom of the error screen.
A generic 8 GB-or-larger flash drive is sufficient as a category; Google does not specify a brand, speed, or model. If your Chromebook supports internet recovery, you may not need to obtain a USB drive at all.
Cost and buying considerations
There is no required purchase when a supported Chromebook offers internet recovery and can connect online. For the USB route, the only hardware requirement is an erasable flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. A basic 8 GB USB flash drive is the appropriate category; Google does not endorse a particular manufacturer, transfer speed, connector type, or model. Compare the connector with the ports on the Chromebook and the working computer, and use an adapter only if your equipment requires one. The selected drive will be erased, so do not choose a drive containing backups or other files.

- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
Create a ChromeOS recovery USB drive
Perform this part on the working computer, not on the Chromebook that displays the error. The USB drive selected in the utility will be erased.
- Install and open Chrome on the working Windows, Mac, or Chromebook computer if it is not already installed.
- Install and launch Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Choose Get started.
- Select the affected Chromebook’s model from the list, or enter its model number. Use the number shown at the bottom of the error screen rather than guessing from the device’s appearance.
- Insert the USB flash drive, select that drive in the utility, and continue. Confirm that it is the drive you intend to erase.
- Choose Create now and wait for the utility to finish writing the recovery media.
- Remove the USB drive only after the utility says the recovery media is ready.
Correct model selection matters: the recovery media must match the Chromebook being repaired. If several removable drives are connected, disconnect the ones you do not need before selecting the target so you do not erase the wrong device.
Identify the model without guessing
The model number is shown at the bottom of the error screen, which is more reliable than a retail name or a similar-looking Chromebook family. Enter the complete number exactly as displayed. A generic product name can cover several hardware revisions, so selecting the first visually similar entry can produce media that the device rejects. If you cannot read the number, photograph the screen or write it down before moving to the working computer.
If the utility cannot create the media
First verify that the selected drive is the intended USB device and that it has at least 8 GB of capacity. Because the utility erases the drive while creating media, any existing files must already be backed up. If creation repeatedly fails, try another USB flash drive; Google lists a different drive as a recovery troubleshooting step.
Enter Chromebook recovery mode
Disconnect accessories before entering recovery mode. Remove external drives, mice, hubs, and other USB devices unless the procedure specifically requires the recovery drive. Connected accessories can trigger the message “Please remove all connected devices and start recovery.”
Most Chromebook laptops
- Turn the Chromebook off.
- Press and hold Esc + Refresh.
- While holding those keys, press Power.
- Release Power, then release the other keys when the recovery message appears.
Refresh is the key with the circular-arrow icon. Some models use Esc + Maximize instead of Esc + Refresh. If the standard combination does not produce the recovery screen, check the device-specific instructions rather than repeatedly forcing a normal boot.
Chromebook tablets
- Press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down + Power together.
- Keep holding the buttons for at least 10 seconds.
- Release them when the recovery screen appears.
Chromeboxes and Chromebits
These devices use dedicated recovery-button procedures that involve a paper clip or another similar object. The location and sequence are device-specific. Verify the instructions for the exact Chromebox or Chromebit model before pressing a recovery button; do not apply the laptop key combination to these devices.

Reinstall ChromeOS with internet recovery
Use this route when the recovery screen offers Recover using internet connection and the Chromebook can connect to the internet.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Enter recovery mode using the procedure for your device.
- Select Recover using internet connection.
- Follow the prompts shown on the Chromebook’s screen. Connect to the requested network if prompted.
- Allow the Chromebook to download and install ChromeOS. Do not turn it off while the process is running.
- Wait for the Chromebook to restart and complete the setup process.
The Chromebook restarts to finish. The internet option is not present on every model, and Google notes that older Chromebooks may not support it. Some older devices may no longer receive updates and may not be recoverable at all; the absence of the option does not mean the USB process will always succeed.
Reinstall ChromeOS from the USB drive
Use the USB route when internet recovery is unavailable, when the Chromebook cannot access the internet, or when you have already created recovery media.
- Insert the recovery USB drive into the affected Chromebook.
- Enter recovery mode using the correct key or button procedure.
- Select Recover using external disk.
- Follow the prompts displayed by the recovery tool.
- Leave the USB drive connected until the Chromebook reports that recovery is complete and restarts.
- After the restart, remove the recovery drive if the screen instructs you to do so, then complete ChromeOS setup.
The exact prompts after selecting the external disk can change. Use the text shown on your model’s screen rather than relying on a prompt from another Chromebook. Recovery erases the Chromebook’s internal storage as part of reinstalling ChromeOS.
What recovery does not fix
Recovery reinstalls ChromeOS; it does not preserve local data, bypass an organization’s management policy, or guarantee that an old device will receive updates afterward. If the underlying problem is a hardware fault or a security-module failure, reinstalling from the same media may not resolve it. Those cases require administrator guidance or manufacturer service rather than repeated formatting.

Fix common Chromebook recovery errors
The following messages and remedies come from Google’s recovery guidance.
“An unexpected error has occurred”
- Erase the recovery storage device and try creating the recovery media again.
- If the error returns, use a different USB flash drive. Google notes that some drives do not work well with recovery.
Recreate the media with the correct Chromebook model selected. Confirm that the drive being erased is the one you intend to use.

Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
“Please remove all connected devices and start recovery”
- Power the Chromebook off.
- Disconnect every accessory, including other USB drives, hubs, mice, and external storage.
- Re-enter recovery mode.
- For USB recovery, insert only the recovery drive when the recovery screen or instructions call for it.
“The device that you inserted doesn’t contain ChromeOS”
- Confirm that the inserted drive is the same drive used to create the recovery media.
- If it is the correct drive, erase it and create the media again.
- If the message persists, try another USB flash drive and repeat the creation process with the affected Chromebook’s exact model number.
Security-module error
For a work- or school-managed Chromebook, contact the administrator. For a personally owned device, Google directs readers to its Help forum and then to the manufacturer for repair if necessary. A security-module error can require device-specific service rather than another attempt with the same USB drive.
Recovery still fails
After trying the documented steps, contact the Chromebook manufacturer. Provide the exact on-screen error, the Chromebook model, the recovery method used, and whether you tried another USB drive. Do not repeatedly erase drives without checking that the model selection and recovery method match the device.
Preflight checklist before selecting Recover
Use this short check immediately before starting. It catches the mistakes that cause the most avoidable data loss:
- Confirm that all important local files have been copied elsewhere, including items in Downloads.
- Confirm that the Chromebook is not owned or managed by a school or employer, or obtain the administrator’s approval first.
- Write down the exact model number shown on the error screen.
- Decide whether internet recovery is offered. If it is, confirm that the Chromebook can reach the internet from the recovery screen.
- For USB recovery, use a second computer with Chrome and a flash drive of at least 8 GB that contains nothing you need.
- Disconnect every unnecessary accessory before entering recovery mode.
- Read the selected option carefully: Recover using internet connection and Recover using external disk are different paths.
Once recovery begins, treat the internal storage as disposable. Keep the Chromebook connected to power according to the device’s normal operating requirements, and do not interrupt the process while it is downloading, writing, or restarting.
Reuse the USB drive after recovery
When recovery finishes, the USB drive remains formatted as ChromeOS recovery media rather than ordinary removable storage. Reusing it for files requires erasing that recovery media.
- On a working computer, open Chromebook Recovery Utility.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Erase recovery media.
- Select the correct USB drive.
- Confirm the erase operation.
- If necessary, use the computer’s normal operating-system formatting tool afterward to prepare the drive for ordinary file storage.
Erasing recovery media removes everything on that USB drive. Verify the drive selection and copy off any files you still need before confirming.

A practical decision checklist
- The Chromebook still works: Back up local files, restart it, and try a factory reset before recovery.
- The recovery screen offers internet recovery and the device can connect: Select Recover using internet connection; no USB preparation is required.
- There is no internet option or no usable connection: Use USB recovery with another Chromebook or a Windows/Mac computer running Chrome and an erasable USB drive of at least 8 GB.
- The device is managed: Ask the school or employer’s administrator before erasing it.
- USB creation fails: Recheck the model number, erase and retry, then try a different drive.
- Recovery continues to fail: Escalate to the manufacturer, supplying the exact error message and model.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Chromebook Recovery Utility keep my files?
No. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases the Chromebook’s internal storage. Back up local files and Downloads before starting. Files already stored in cloud services can be accessed again after setup, but files saved only on the device should be treated as lost once recovery begins.
Do I need to buy a USB flash drive?
Only for the USB method. A supported Chromebook may recover over the internet without a second computer or flash drive. If you use USB recovery, use an erasable drive with at least 8 GB. Google does not require a particular brand, speed, or model, and creating the media erases the drive.
Can I create the recovery USB on the Chromebook that has the error?
No. Create it on another Chromebook or on a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed. The affected Chromebook is used afterward to enter recovery mode and read the finished external disk.
Where do I find my Chromebook’s model number?
Google says the model number appears at the bottom of the error screen. Use that exact number when Chromebook Recovery Utility asks you to select a model. Do not choose a model merely because its case or retail name looks similar.
What if I do not see “Recover using internet connection”?
That option is not available on every Chromebook. Older models may not support it. Use USB recovery if you have a second computer and an erasable 8 GB-or-larger drive. Some older devices may no longer receive updates and may not be recoverable, so USB is not a guarantee.
Why does the Chromebook say the inserted device does not contain ChromeOS?
Confirm that you inserted the same drive used to create the recovery media. If it is correct, erase the drive and create the media again with the affected Chromebook’s exact model number. If the error remains, try another USB drive.
Can I reuse the recovery USB for normal files?
Yes, but first erase its recovery-media contents in Chromebook Recovery Utility: open Settings, choose Erase recovery media, select the drive, and confirm. That operation removes everything on the drive. Use the computer’s normal formatting tool afterward if ordinary file storage requires it.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do if recovery still fails?
Record the exact error, Chromebook model, recovery method, and USB drive used. For a managed device, contact the administrator. For a personal device, follow Google’s Help guidance and contact the Chromebook manufacturer if the documented retries, including another USB drive, do not work.
The Bottom Line
Recovery is the final, destructive reinstall step: it erases the Chromebook’s internal storage. Back up first, try a restart and factory reset when the device remains usable, and obtain administrator approval for managed hardware. Use internet recovery when the option is offered; otherwise create correctly matched USB media on another computer with Chrome and an erasable drive of at least 8 GB. If the documented retries fail, contact the manufacturer.
