Use privacy controls in layers: turn off model-improvement training for routine personal use, choose Temporary Chat or Incognito for a one-off session, remove sensitive details before sending them, and delete chats and separately stored files afterward. None of these options makes an account anonymous or guarantees immediate deletion. Retention, administrator rules, connected tools and safety reviews can still apply.
The controls for ChatGPT and Claude are separate from chat history, memory, feedback and workspace policy. Follow the checklist below for the service and account you actually use, then recheck the settings whenever your plan, workspace or the provider’s labels change.
Start with the information, not the toggle
Before opening either assistant, decide whether the service and account are approved for the material. A personal-account setting may not override a school or employer’s policy, a managed workspace configuration or an administrator’s retention rules. OpenAI specifically notes that workspace settings affect available controls and retention or access. Anthropic’s consumer guidance is separate from commercial-service terms, so use your organization’s governing policy for a work account.

- Remove names, addresses, account numbers, client identifiers and unnecessary quotations.
- Never send passwords, authentication codes, private keys, API secrets or other credentials.
- Paste the shortest redacted excerpt that answers your question instead of an entire document.
- Assume that redaction lowers risk but does not make text anonymous; distinctive facts can still identify a person or project.
- Check whether an uploaded file is stored separately from the conversation. A chat deletion may not remove a copy saved in a library or file area.
These precautions matter even when model-improvement training is disabled. Training use is only one part of processing, and temporary modes have retention windows rather than instant-erasure guarantees.

ChatGPT: configure ongoing use and one-off sessions separately
Turn off model improvement for personal-account chats
For an ongoing personal-account choice, open Settings > Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI’s wording is specific: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting follows the signed-in account across devices.
This switch does not erase chats already saved in your history, and it does not replace controls for memory, connected applications or deletion. Treat it as a forward-looking training preference: new personal-account conversations are excluded from model improvement while the preference remains off, but the conversations can still remain visible in history until you remove them.
Use Temporary Chat when a conversation should not enter history
For a one-off discussion, choose Temporary Chat rather than starting a normal thread. Temporary Chats do not appear in chat history, do not create or update memories and are not used for model improvement while they remain temporary. OpenAI may nevertheless keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Temporary status does not automatically disable every personalization source. If you do not want the session to use existing memories, custom instructions or plugins, turn personalization off as well. Temporary Chat normally has no plugins, but a personalized temporary chat can use them. Review the tools and instructions shown in the session before entering sensitive text.

Do not save a Temporary Chat if you intend it to stay temporary. Saving converts it into a regular chat, after which ordinary history, deletion and account settings apply.
Delete a saved chat; do not confuse deletion with archiving
When a normal conversation is no longer needed, delete it from the chat list. Archive only changes how the conversation is presented; it is not a deletion request. OpenAI says deleted chats are scheduled for permanent removal within 30 days, subject to de-identification and security or legal-retention exceptions. “Within 30 days” describes the provider’s scheduled handling, not proof that every copy disappears instantly from backups, logs or a legal hold.
Inspect the separate Library or file area after deleting a chat. OpenAI states that a file saved there may remain independently, so delete that file as a separate action when it is no longer required.

Keep feedback separate from ordinary use
Thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback has a special consequence. OpenAI says submitting feedback may make the associated personal-account conversation usable for training even after you opted out of model improvement. If a conversation contains sensitive material, avoid sending feedback on that thread unless you accept that exception.

Review memory, personalization and connected tools
Memory controls affect personalization, not the basic model-training switch. Review saved memories separately from chat history, and do not assume that deleting the original conversation removes a separately stored memory or preference. The cited OpenAI guidance treats these as distinct controls.
Connected apps, plugins and other tools also need their own review. A tool may receive information required to perform an action, and its data practices can differ from ChatGPT’s chat settings. For a sensitive one-off, disable tools you do not need and avoid authorizing a connector merely to save a small amount of manual work.
Check the workspace before relying on a personal setting
Managed workspaces can have different default training treatment, retention and administrator controls. If the account belongs to an employer or school, ask which policy governs the conversation and whether administrators can access, retain or export it. Your personal-looking toggle is not evidence that the organization’s configuration has changed.

- The switch is missing: you may be in a managed workspace, on a different account or in an app version with different labels. Confirm the signed-in account and ask the workspace administrator.
- A temporary chat appears in history: verify that you started Temporary Chat rather than a normal thread and that you did not save it afterward.
- Personal information still appears in replies: inspect memory, custom instructions and connected tools; turning off model improvement does not clear those personalization sources.
- A deleted chat’s attachment remains: check Library or other file locations and remove the file separately.
- You already submitted feedback: treat that conversation as subject to the feedback exception rather than assuming the opt-out covers it.
Claude: use Privacy settings and Incognito for different purposes
Disable future model improvement for ordinary consumer use
In Claude, open the account’s Privacy settings and turn off the model-improvement choice if you do not want new chats and coding sessions used for future model training. Anthropic states: “If you decide to turn off the model training setting, we will not use any new chats and coding sessions you have with Claude for future model training.” The setting is changeable, so check it after account or policy changes.

This preference governs future training use; it is not a chat-history deletion command. Keep deletion, retention and feedback decisions separate.
Choose Incognito chat for a one-off conversation
Use Incognito chat when a particular conversation should not appear in chat history or be used for model improvement. Anthropic states that Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement even when Model Improvement is enabled in Privacy settings.
Incognito does not mean immediate deletion. Claude’s Help Center says Incognito chats are retained for 30 days by default. Enterprise customers can have longer custom retention, so an organization’s policy may override the consumer default. The 30-day period is a retention rule, not a promise that no operational or legally retained copy exists during that time.
Understand feedback and safety-review exceptions
Anthropic distinguishes ordinary use from conversations submitted for feedback or flagged for safety review. Its consumer guidance says feedback can retain the related conversation for up to five years and may allow use for service analysis, research, user-behavior study and model training as permitted by law. Do not send feedback on a sensitive Incognito conversation unless you accept that longer-retention exception.

Anthropic also says chats flagged for safety review may be analyzed to enforce its Usage Policy, including training safeguards models for its Safeguards team. Incognito therefore reduces routine history and model-improvement exposure; it does not exempt a conversation from safety enforcement.
Interpret connector statements narrowly
Anthropic’s cited training guidance says raw content from connected sources is not included in the described model-improvement data unless you copy that content directly into the conversation. That is a narrow statement about the specified training data, not a blanket promise covering every processing, access or retention practice of every connector. Share only the source material needed for the task and review the connector’s own authorization and organization rules.
Handle work and commercial accounts under their own policy
Consumer Privacy settings and Incognito behavior should not be generalized to commercial deployments. For a work account, confirm the applicable contract, administrator controls, retention schedule and approval requirements before sending confidential material. If the organization has custom Incognito retention, that setting governs instead of the 30-day consumer default.

- Incognito is unavailable: confirm the account type and workspace policy; commercial administrators can expose different controls.
- A chat is missing from history but you still need it: Incognito is designed not to appear there, so save only information that is safe to retain through an approved channel.
- You turned off model improvement but used a normal chat: the preference addresses future training use, not automatic deletion or every other processing purpose.
- You connected a source: distinguish raw connector content from text you copied into the prompt; the cited training statement does not cover all connector handling.
- You gave feedback or triggered a safety review: apply the separate retention and analysis exceptions rather than relying on Incognito alone.
What to do after a sensitive conversation
- Stop using the thread and record only the minimum information you need for your own work.
- For ChatGPT, delete a saved chat and then inspect Library for separately stored files. Remember that deletion is scheduled within 30 days and has stated exceptions.
- For Claude, remove any retained material using the controls available to your plan or workspace. The sources cited here establish Incognito’s default retention, but do not establish one universal deletion timeline for ordinary Claude chats across all plans.
- Review saved memories, custom instructions and personalization entries independently of chat history. Removing a conversation is not evidence that every separately stored personalization item has been removed.
- Check whether you submitted feedback, copied connector data into the prompt or used a managed workspace. Those events can invoke different retention, review or administrator rules.
- Recheck privacy settings after a plan, account, app, workspace or policy change. Labels and availability can change.

Choose the least-exposure workflow that still works
For routine, low-sensitivity questions
Use a normal chat after turning off model improvement if you do not want new conversations used for future training. Still remove unnecessary identifiers and avoid credentials. History remains available until you delete it.
For a sensitive, one-time question
Use Temporary Chat in ChatGPT or Incognito chat in Claude. Disable personalization or connected tools that are not required, avoid feedback, and do not save the conversation. The mode limits routine history and training use but does not make the service anonymous or eliminate safety retention.
For regulated, confidential or employer-owned information
Do not rely on a consumer toggle. Confirm that the account and service are approved, learn the workspace’s administrator and retention rules, and ask whether an enterprise agreement or private deployment is required. If approval is unclear, do not paste the information.
Limits you should keep in mind
“Not used for model improvement” is narrower than “not processed.” Providers may retain data for safety, security, legal compliance, abuse prevention, feedback handling or workspace administration. A chat that is absent from history can still be retained for the stated period. A deleted conversation can have separately stored files, memories or feedback records. Connected-source statements may address one training pathway without describing every data flow. Use the controls as risk reduction, not as a promise of anonymity or instant erasure.
