Use each service’s temporary mode before you send your first message: choose Temporary in ChatGPT, start a Temporary Chat in Gemini, or select Incognito Chat in Meta AI when that option is available in your WhatsApp or Meta AI app. These controls keep a conversation out of the normal history or activity view, but they do not mean that no data is processed or that no short-lived copy exists. Each provider describes different retention, personalization, and model-improvement rules.
This guide shows exactly what to select, what each company says happens to the conversation, and which privacy limits still apply. Labels and availability can change with your account, app version, region, and rollout status, so use the live interface as the final authority.
What “without saving chats” actually means
People usually mean several different things when they ask for an unsaved AI chat. They may not want the conversation listed in a sidebar, included in an activity log, used to personalize future answers, or used to improve the provider’s models. They may also want the provider to keep no copy at all.

Temporary controls address some of those concerns, but not all of them in the same way. A chat can disappear from your visible history while a provider keeps a limited copy for safety, service operation, or feedback processing. Conversely, a provider can say a temporary conversation is not used for model training while still processing it to generate the answer. Treat these as separate questions:

- Visible history: Can you or another person using your account see the conversation in the ordinary chat list or activity page?
- Personalization: Can the conversation influence saved memory, recommendations, or future responses?
- Model improvement: Does the provider say it uses the temporary conversation to train or improve its models?
- Provider retention: Does the provider retain a copy for a stated period or purpose?
- Third-party access: Does an extension, plug-in, action, or connected service receive what you send?
The procedures below are designed to keep the conversation out of normal history. They are not a promise of absolute anonymity, deletion from every system, or protection from information you voluntarily send to another service.
ChatGPT: start a Temporary Chat
Steps
- Open ChatGPT and start a new conversation.
- Select Temporary before entering your first prompt. The control may appear near the conversation title or in the new-chat controls, depending on the current web or app layout.
- Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Confirm the temporary state, then send your prompt.
The personalization choice is made before the conversation begins and cannot be changed after you start sending messages. If you want the least personalization, select Unpersonalized. OpenAI says this mode does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins. A Personalized Temporary Chat may refer to existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins, but it does not create or update memories while it remains temporary.
What OpenAI says is retained
OpenAI says an unsaved Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history, does not create memories, and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary. OpenAI also says it may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. That is a provider-stated maximum for a safety copy, not a guarantee that every conversation is held for exactly 30 days or that all other account records follow the same schedule.
“Not used to improve models” and “not saved in your history” are separate properties. Selecting Temporary addresses the history question; selecting Unpersonalized addresses the use of memory, custom instructions, and plugins. Do not assume that turning off one automatically changes the other.
Saving changes the privacy status
If you save a Temporary Chat, OpenAI converts it into a regular conversation. It then follows the data controls for your account and any applicable workspace rules. A conversation that was absent from history while temporary should therefore be treated as an ordinary saved chat after you choose to keep it.

Actions and connected services
If a custom GPT or other ChatGPT feature uses an action, information sent to that third party is governed by the recipient’s privacy policy and may be retained longer. Temporary status does not override the terms of a service that receives data outside ChatGPT. Avoid entering confidential information when a prompt will trigger an external action unless you have reviewed that recipient’s handling practices.
How to verify that you started correctly
- Check for the visible Temporary indicator before typing the first message.
- Make the personalization choice at the start; it cannot be retroactively changed for that conversation.
- Do not rely on deleting a normal chat after sending sensitive information. Deletion and temporary mode are different controls.
- If you need a record, save the conversation only after deciding that ordinary history and account settings are acceptable.
Gemini: use Temporary Chat
Steps
- Open Gemini in the current web or mobile app.
- Start a new conversation and select Temporary Chat before sending your first message.
- Confirm that the temporary indicator is active, then submit the prompt.
Google’s current Gemini guidance points users to Temporary Chat for material they do not want Gemini to remember or use to personalize their experience. The exact location of the control can change as the interface is updated, so look for the temporary option in the new-conversation controls rather than assuming an older menu path is still present.
Google’s stated treatment of temporary conversations
Google says Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or in Gemini Apps Activity. Google also says they are not used to personalize the Gemini experience or to train Google AI models. Google states that these chats are kept for up to 72 hours so Gemini can respond and process feedback.
The 72-hour statement applies to temporary conversations and the stated purposes of responding and handling feedback. It is not a blanket retention period for every item in your Google account, nor does it establish that no technical logs, security records, or data sent to another service exist elsewhere.
Do not confuse Temporary Chat with activity controls
Gemini Apps Activity has separate controls for reviewing and deleting activity, changing auto-delete timing, and controlling whether data is used to improve Google AI. Those settings manage existing activity and account-level preferences; they are not a substitute for starting a Temporary Chat before you send a one-off prompt.

Changing an activity setting should not be treated as proof that previously collected information has been erased unless the current interface explicitly confirms that result. For a new conversation you do not want to shape personalization, choose Temporary Chat at the outset.
Gemini checks before you send
- Look for the Temporary Chat label before entering sensitive text.
- Use the temporary mode for the entire one-off conversation; starting normally and deleting later does not provide the same documented behavior.
- Remember that Google’s 72-hour statement is a provider disclosure for this feature, not an independent audit.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity separately when you need to manage older, non-temporary conversations.
Meta AI: look for Incognito Chat
Where the feature applies
Meta announced Incognito Chat with Meta AI for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. The announcement described a staged rollout over the following months, so the option may not be present on every account, device, or region. Check the current WhatsApp or Meta AI interface for an Incognito option before assuming it is available.
Steps when the option is available
- Open WhatsApp or the Meta AI app and enter the Meta AI conversation area.
- Start a new conversation and choose Incognito Chat if the control is displayed.
- Confirm the incognito indicator before sending your first message.
- Use that conversation for the temporary exchange; do not switch to a standard Meta AI thread if you want the temporary behavior to continue.
Meta’s description of Incognito Chat
Meta says Incognito Chat is a private, temporary conversation visible only to the user. Its announcement says messages are processed in a secure environment that Meta cannot access, that conversations are not saved, and that messages disappear by default.
Those are Meta’s product claims in its announcement, not the result of an independent technical audit. They should not be generalized to every Meta AI surface, ordinary WhatsApp conversation, or another Meta product. The announcement’s staged-rollout language also means that a missing Incognito control may reflect availability rather than a setup error.
If you cannot find Incognito Chat
- Update WhatsApp or the Meta AI app through your device’s normal app store.
- Check that you are in the Meta AI area, not a standard one-to-one or group conversation.
- Look for an account, region, or rollout limitation; the feature was announced as arriving over time.
- Do not assume that a normal Meta AI chat has Incognito behavior merely because it is an AI conversation.

The figures in the table are not directly comparable measurements. OpenAI’s “up to 30 days” and Google’s “up to 72 hours” describe different provider purposes, while Meta’s announcement uses a disappearing-message description without a matching number. None of these modes should be read as proof that information is never processed.

Choosing the right mode for a situation
Use ChatGPT Unpersonalized Temporary Chat when personalization is the concern
This is the clearest choice when you want a one-off answer without memory, custom instructions, or plugins influencing the conversation. It also keeps the unsaved chat out of ordinary history under OpenAI’s stated behavior. If you do want existing personalization but do not want new memories created, Personalized Temporary Chat is the relevant alternative.
Use Gemini Temporary Chat for a one-off prompt
Gemini’s documented mode combines absence from recent chats and Gemini Apps Activity with Google’s statements about no personalization and no model training. The separate 72-hour processing-and-feedback retention statement still applies.
Use Meta AI Incognito Chat only when the control is visible
Meta’s mode is useful when it is actually available in your WhatsApp or Meta AI app and you want the disappearing-message behavior Meta describes. Because rollout is staged and the announcement covers specific surfaces, do not substitute an ordinary Meta AI thread.

Temporary modes reduce the chance that a conversation will remain in your visible history, but they do not remove the risks of disclosure. Do not paste passwords, authentication codes, private encryption keys, full financial account details, medical records that identify another person, or confidential business material unless you are authorized to share it and understand the provider’s terms.

Troubleshooting and common mistakes
The chat appears in history
First check whether the temporary control was selected before the first message. If you started a normal conversation, deleting it afterward is not the same documented workflow as starting in temporary mode. In ChatGPT, also check whether you explicitly saved the conversation; saving converts it to a regular chat.
The service used personal context
In ChatGPT, a Personalized Temporary Chat can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. Start a new chat and select Unpersonalized before sending the prompt if you do not want those inputs. In Gemini, verify that the conversation was created as Temporary Chat rather than a normal chat. Do not infer Meta AI behavior beyond the Incognito control that the app actually displays.
The option is missing
Interface labels can move after an app update, and access can depend on account, region, or rollout. Update the app, start a genuinely new conversation, and inspect the current controls. Meta’s Incognito Chat is specifically described as a staged rollout, so a missing option may simply mean your account has not received it.

ChatGPT explicitly allows a user to save a Temporary Chat, but doing so changes it into a regular conversation. For Gemini and Meta AI, the temporary descriptions are designed around one-off or disappearing conversations. If you need a durable record, export or copy only the minimum text you are comfortable storing, and understand that your own copy is outside the temporary mode.
A practical pre-send checklist
- Decide whether you mean “not visible in history,” “not used for personalization,” “not used for model improvement,” or all three.
- Open a new conversation rather than reusing an ordinary thread.
- Select the provider’s temporary control before typing the prompt.
- In ChatGPT, choose Unpersonalized or Personalized deliberately; the choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins.
- Confirm the visible label or indicator.
- Remove secrets and unnecessary identifying details from the prompt.
- Check whether the request will send information to an external action or connected service.
- Do not save a ChatGPT Temporary Chat unless you accept its conversion to a regular chat.
- For Meta AI, verify that Incognito Chat is actually available in your current app and region.
What these modes do not guarantee
They do not guarantee zero processing, zero retention, legal privilege, or immunity from security and operational controls. OpenAI and Google publish specific retention statements for their temporary modes, and Meta publishes a disappearing-message and secure-processing description. Those statements are provider policies and product claims, not a single cross-service standard or independent audit.
They also do not erase older conversations. Use ChatGPT’s ordinary account controls for existing saved chats, and use Gemini Apps Activity controls to review or delete existing Gemini activity and adjust auto-delete settings. Starting a new temporary conversation should be treated as a forward-looking choice, not a retrospective deletion command.
