To change YouTube’s desktop appearance, install a maintained extension from your browser’s official store, check the permissions before approving it, then open its settings and enable only the layout, player, theme, or page-element changes you want. YouTube Redux is the closest fit for a classic-style interface and adjustable home-page grid; Enhancer for YouTube and Improve YouTube! provide broader combinations of themes, player controls, filters, and visibility options. None can guarantee a perfect copy of every older YouTube design, because YouTube changes its code and each extension has a different feature set.
What a YouTube customization extension can change
A browser extension runs in your desktop browser and modifies the YouTube pages you view. Depending on the extension, it can replace parts of the page layout, change the number of videos shown in a row, resize or reposition the player, apply a theme, or hide sections that make the page feel cluttered.
These changes are local to the browser profile where the extension is installed. They do not alter YouTube’s servers, your account settings, or the layout seen by another person using a different browser profile. An extension may also stop working when YouTube changes its page structure, so treat a store listing’s compatibility as current information rather than a permanent promise.

People use that phrase for several different goals: a smaller player, a denser home page, an older watch-page arrangement, a classic logo, fewer recommendations, or the removal of infinite scrolling. A single switch rarely restores every historical detail. Define the exact change you miss before choosing an extension.

Store pages are the authority for availability, permissions, and update status at the moment you install. A feature shown in a listing may still behave differently on a particular YouTube page or after a later YouTube change.
YouTube Redux: the most direct route to a classic-style layout
YouTube Redux is aimed at people who want visible elements of older YouTube designs rather than only a new color scheme. Its listings describe alternative classic and older watch-page layouts, a smaller player with preset sizes, classic logo and favicon options, and controls for several major YouTube sections.
Home-page grid and scrolling controls
The Firefox listing describes a home-page grid setting ranging from the default four videos per row to one through ten videos per row. A low value creates larger thumbnails and a more spacious page; a high value produces a dense catalog view. Redux also lists options to disable infinite scrolling for comments and related videos, which can make long pages easier to navigate.
Watch-page and site-wide options
Redux lists true fullscreen, classic watch-page variants, and a small-player mode. It also describes changes to home, search, channel, and Explore pages, so the effect is not limited to a single video page. If you only want a denser home page, leave unrelated classic or logo settings off instead of changing the entire site.
Permissions to examine
The Firefox listing says the extension requires access to youtube.com. It also lists optional permission to download files and to read or modify browser download history. Those optional permissions are separate from the core site access; approve them only if the function that needs them is useful to you. The developer states in the listing that the extension does not require data collection, but review the live listing because disclosures can change.

Enhancer for YouTube: flexible player and page controls
Enhancer for YouTube is suited to viewers who want to combine several adjustments: playback behavior, a wider or mini player, a custom color scheme, and removal of individual page sections. Its Chrome listing identifies it as a third-party product that is not affiliated with YouTube.
Player and theme controls
The listing describes adjustable playback controls, a wide player, a mini player, custom themes, and a dark theme. Mozilla’s profile additionally describes custom colors, expanded descriptions, newest-first comments, and a player that can remain pinned in a corner while you scroll. Pick only the controls you need; enabling every visual option can make it harder to identify which setting caused an unexpected result.
Hide specific sections
Enhancer’s listing names controls for hiding recommendations, related videos, chat, comments, and other page elements. These are useful when your goal is a focused watch page rather than an approximation of a particular historical design.
How to interpret the Mozilla profile
A Mozilla profile quotes creator Maxime RF: “I wanted to offer a useful extension people can trust.” The profile documented a Mozilla Recommended Extensions designation when that profile was published. Do not assume that historical designation is still displayed; check the current store page before installation.
Improve YouTube!: extensive settings in Firefox
Improve YouTube! presents a large settings menu covering layout, theme and style, a retro classic layout, player controls, filters, and additional features. Its Firefox listing reports version 4.2081 and a last update of July 5, 2026, and labels the add-on open-source and Recommended at the time of that listing.

The advertised “175+ useful / unique features” figure is the publisher’s count, not an independent audit. Use the feature list to match a concrete need—such as a retro layout, a filter, or a player behavior—rather than treating the count as a quality or compatibility score. The listing also displays requested permissions; read the current permission panel before adding it.
Review permissions before installing
An extension that changes YouTube must be able to read and modify the YouTube page. That access is powerful enough to justify a deliberate check, even when the extension comes from an official store.
Questions to ask on the listing
- Does the listing show a current version and a recent update date?
- Is the browser you use supported by a live listing, rather than by an old article or a download mirror?
- Does the requested host access make sense for a tool whose purpose is to change YouTube?
- Are optional permissions—such as download access—needed for a feature you intend to use?
- Does the description explain what the extension changes and identify the developer?
Store permissions and privacy disclosures can change. Recheck them when an extension updates or when you move it to another browser.
Install and configure an extension in Chrome
- Open the official store. In Chrome desktop, open the Chrome Web Store and search for the exact extension name. Select the listing that matches the developer and read its features, version, update date, permissions, and privacy information.
- Start installation. Choose Add to Chrome. Chrome displays the access requested by the extension before it is added.
- Evaluate the prompt. Approve the installation only when the listed site access and optional permissions fit the extension’s purpose. Cancel if the request is broader than you expected or if the listing no longer matches your needs.
- Open the extension. Select the Extensions button in the Chrome toolbar, pin the extension if you want quick access, and open its controls or settings page.
- Choose one change at a time. Enable the layout, grid, theme, player, or visibility option that addresses your goal. Reload the YouTube tab if the extension asks you to.
- Adjust site access. In the extension’s details, or from the toolbar menu where Chrome exposes the control, change site access to the current site or selected sites when that is sufficient. Limiting access to YouTube reduces where the extension can run.
- Verify the result. Open the YouTube home page, a watch page, search, and any other section you changed. If one page is unaffected, return to the extension’s settings and check whether that page has a separate switch.
Chrome also lets you disable or remove an extension from its extension-management page. A work or school administrator may block installations or control which extensions can run.
Install and configure an extension in Firefox
- Use Mozilla Add-ons. Search the Firefox Add-ons site for the extension and select its current listing. Do not use Chrome’s Add to Chrome workflow in Firefox.
- Read the listing. Check the stated features, version, last-update date, permissions, data practices, and supported browser information. For example, the Redux listing reports version 3.12.0 and a May 3, 2026 update, while Improve YouTube! reports version 4.2081 and a July 5, 2026 update.
- Add the extension. Select Firefox’s install button and review the permission dialog. Continue only when the access is appropriate for the changes you want.
- Open settings. Use Firefox’s Extensions and Themes area or the extension’s toolbar button to open its options. Configure the layout or player controls, then reload YouTube if necessary.
- Test and refine. Check the pages affected by your choices. If the page looks wrong, return to the options and turn off the last setting you changed before trying another combination.
Firefox listings identify permissions and data information separately from the feature description. Read both sections; a prominent feature list is not a substitute for a permission review.

Configure common layout changes
Make the home page denser or more spacious
Choose the grid setting in an extension that exposes one. Redux describes one through ten videos per row, with four as the default listed value. Use fewer columns for larger thumbnails and easier scanning; use more columns when you want more choices visible without scrolling. Save the setting, reload the home page, and check whether the change applies only to Home or also to search and channel pages.
Use a classic or retro watch page
Enable the classic or retro layout option in Redux or Improve YouTube!, then reload a watch page. Compare the player, title area, comments, and related-video placement. If only part of the page changes, that is expected: extensions implement their own versions of older elements, and YouTube may render different components for different account states or experiments.
Reduce player size or keep it visible while scrolling
Redux lists a small player with size presets. Enhancer describes wide and mini players, and its Mozilla profile describes pinning the player in a corner during scrolling. Select one player mode, test it on a normal watch page, and turn off competing mini-player or wide-player settings if the modes conflict.
Apply a theme without changing the structure
Enhancer offers custom themes and a dark theme, while Improve YouTube! lists theme and style settings. If you only want color changes, leave classic-layout and page-hiding options disabled. This isolates the visual change and makes troubleshooting easier.

Hide distracting sections
Enhancer lists controls for recommendations, related videos, chat, comments, and other page elements. Hide one category at a time and revisit a watch page after each change. Removing comments or related videos can also remove navigation and context you may want later, so keep a quick way to restore the section.

When an extension does not work
The page looks unchanged
- Open the extension’s own settings and confirm the relevant switch is enabled.
- Reload the YouTube tab, and if necessary close and reopen the browser.
- Check that the extension has access to YouTube rather than only the current tab or no sites.
- Test a page type the extension explicitly supports, such as Home or a watch page.
Two extensions produce conflicting changes
Disable one YouTube customization extension temporarily, reload the page, and test again. If the layout returns to normal, re-enable extensions one at a time and avoid enabling overlapping player, theme, or page-hiding controls in multiple extensions.
YouTube changed and the extension stopped working
Open the store listing and look for a newer version, release notes, or a developer notice. YouTube changes can invalidate an extension’s page selectors before an update is available. Chrome’s official guidance says unsupported extensions may be disabled; its suggested choices are to find an alternative or remove the disabled extension. Do not install an unverified copy solely to restore a broken feature.
A managed computer blocks installation
On a work or school computer, an administrator may prevent extension installation or control site access. Use an approved browser profile or ask the administrator; do not attempt to bypass organizational controls.

- Record which extension controls each change, especially when you use more than one.
- Prefer a current official-store listing over an old tutorial that links to a discontinued build.
- Recheck permissions and privacy disclosures after major updates.
- Disable an extension when you are diagnosing a YouTube problem, then re-enable it after identifying the cause.
- Remove extensions you no longer use. A disabled extension is still installed, while removal eliminates its browser access.
- Expect occasional incompatibility after YouTube redesigns. A listing’s update date is useful evidence of maintenance, not a guarantee of future support.
Which option should you start with?
Start with YouTube Redux when your priority is a classic-style interface, a selectable home-page grid, a small player, or older watch-page elements. Choose Enhancer for YouTube when you want a combination of playback controls, themes, wide or mini players, and the ability to hide specific sections. Choose Improve YouTube! in Firefox when its retro layout, filters, and broad settings menu match your needs and its current permissions are acceptable.
Whichever option you select, install it from the official store for your browser, inspect the live listing on the day you install, limit site access where the browser allows it, and enable settings incrementally. That approach gives you a controllable approximation of the layout you want without assuming that any extension can permanently reproduce every past YouTube version.
