You cannot pair a Bluetooth speaker directly with a PS5 as a supported audio output. To use one, either send the PS5’s HDMI sound through a Bluetooth-capable TV or connect a PS5-compatible USB Bluetooth transmitter and pair the speaker with that transmitter. Neither method guarantees zero delay; codec support, TV processing, transmitter design and the speaker itself determine how closely sound follows the picture.
For rhythm, fighting and other response-sensitive games, Sony recommends TV speakers or a soundbar connected by HDMI or digital optical cable. Bluetooth is best treated as a convenience option whose delay can be reduced, not eliminated in every setup.
What the PS5 does—and does not—support
The PS5 does not support a normal Bluetooth speaker connection from its Bluetooth accessories menu. A speaker may appear discoverable, yet the console is not designed to use ordinary Bluetooth speakers as a direct audio output. Do not spend time repeatedly trying to pair the speaker with the console; choose one of the supported signal paths below instead.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn every wireless arrangement, audio travels through several components: the PS5, HDMI or USB output, a television or transmitter, the Bluetooth radio link and the speaker’s decoder and amplifier. Delay can be introduced at any stage. Sony’s help guidance states: “If a Bluetooth audio device is connected, there may be a delay between the picture and sound due to the properties of Bluetooth.” That is why a setup that works acceptably for films can still feel late in a game.

There is no universal “PS5 Bluetooth delay” number. The result depends on the exact television, transmitter, speaker, Bluetooth codec, audio format and game. A manufacturer’s low-latency specification is not a measured result for your particular combination.
Choose the connection that fits your priority
| Route | Additional hardware | Delay risk | Codec requirement | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 HDMI to Bluetooth-capable TV, then TV to speaker | None if your TV and speaker already support the route | Medium to high; TV processing and Bluetooth can add delay | TV and speaker must support the TV’s Bluetooth audio profile; a low-latency codec is not guaranteed | Casual games, video and situations where convenience matters more than timing |
| PS5 USB Bluetooth transmitter to speaker | A transmitter that explicitly supports PS5 audio | Low to medium when transmitter and speaker share a suitable low-latency codec; otherwise potentially noticeable | Both endpoints must explicitly support the same codec, such as aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive | Wireless room audio when you accept some compatibility testing |
| PS5 or TV to wired speakers or soundbar | HDMI, digital optical or another supported cable | Lowest and most predictable of these choices | None for the speaker link | Rhythm, fighting, competitive and other response-sensitive games |
The table describes practical tendencies, not guarantees. A television with excellent audio processing can outperform a poorly matched transmitter, while a speaker that silently falls back to a higher-latency codec can undermine an otherwise good adapter.
Route 1: Pair the speaker with a Bluetooth-capable TV
This is the simplest route when you already own a compatible television. The PS5 remains connected to the TV by HDMI; the TV receives the console’s sound and sends it wirelessly to the speaker.
Check the equipment before changing settings
- Confirm that the TV supports Bluetooth audio output, not merely Bluetooth input for a keyboard, remote or game controller.
- Confirm that the speaker can operate as a Bluetooth audio receiver and is not limited to a proprietary wireless link.
- Place the speaker close enough for a reliable radio connection while testing. A weak connection can create dropouts that sound like timing problems.
- Keep the TV’s internal speakers available for a baseline test.
Configure the PS5 and TV
- Connect the PS5 to the TV with HDMI and select the HDMI input used by the console.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Set the output device to the HDMI-connected TV or audio system. If the console offers an HDMI device-type choice, use the setting that matches the TV or connected audio equipment.
- On the TV, open its audio or Bluetooth settings. Labels vary by manufacturer; look for options such as Sound Output, Bluetooth Speaker List or Wireless Speaker.
- Put the speaker into pairing mode, select it on the TV and wait for the TV to report that the connection is active.
- Play a game with obvious sound cues, then switch briefly to the TV speakers. This A/B check tells you whether the wireless path—not the game or display—is responsible for the offset.
Manage TV synchronization settings carefully
Many TVs provide an A/V Sync, Audio Delay or similar control. It can move sound earlier or later relative to the picture, but it cannot make a Bluetooth link inherently faster. Sony warns that synchronization adjustments can themselves add output delay, particularly when a game mode is being used. Apply the smallest correction that aligns speech or effects, then retest controls and sound cues in a game.

If the TV has a game mode, enable it while testing so unnecessary picture processing is removed. Do not assume that game mode eliminates Bluetooth latency; it only changes the display side of the chain. If the TV offers several audio formats, use the simplest format available during diagnosis. Extra decoding or surround processing can add another buffer.
When the TV route is the wrong choice
A TV may pair successfully yet still produce an objectionable echo or late sound. That is not evidence that the speaker is defective. It means the TV’s Bluetooth implementation, codec choice or audio processing is unsuitable for the game. For timing-critical play, move to wired audio or test a USB transmitter rather than continually increasing the TV’s sync correction.
Route 2: Use a USB Bluetooth transmitter made for PS5 audio
A USB transmitter is a third-party workaround: the PS5 sends audio to the transmitter, and the transmitter sends it to the Bluetooth speaker. Sony does not guarantee compatibility or performance for third-party adapters. The transmitter must identify itself to the PS5 in a way the console accepts, and its operating mode must be intended for audio transmission rather than USB data or microphone use.
Verify compatibility before buying
- Look for current documentation that explicitly names PS5 support. A generic USB Bluetooth radio is not automatically an audio transmitter.
- Check whether the adapter supports the PS5’s required USB port and whether it needs a separate USB-C or USB-A connection.
- Confirm the transmitter’s pairing procedure and whether it supports one or two audio devices.
- Compare the transmitter’s codec list with the speaker’s codec list. Both must support the same low-latency codec for that codec to be used.
- Check how the transmitter handles the PS5 microphone requirement if you need voice chat; many audio-only transmitters carry sound out but do not provide a chat microphone path.
Connect and pair the transmitter
- Turn off the speaker or disconnect it from other devices so it cannot automatically reclaim the Bluetooth connection.
- Insert the transmitter into the PS5 USB port specified by its manual. If the product has separate modes, select its audio-transmit or console mode before pairing.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the USB audio device if it appears as an output option.
- Put the speaker into pairing mode, then start pairing on the transmitter using the transmitter’s documented button or switch.
- Wait for both devices to show a completed connection. Keep the speaker close during initial pairing.
- Play a game and compare a sharp sound cue with the on-screen action. Test more than one game, because some titles mask a small offset better than others.
If the PS5 does not list the transmitter, unplug it, restart the console and try the other USB port recommended by the manufacturer. If it still does not appear, the adapter may not present a USB audio interface the PS5 supports; substituting another generic transmitter is unlikely to solve that limitation.

Why a matched codec matters
Some PS5-oriented transmitters, including the Avantree C81 described in its manual, recommend a speaker or headphones that support aptX Low Latency or aptX Adaptive. The recommendation is about the complete pair: the transmitter must encode with the codec and the speaker must decode it. A speaker that supports only the basic Bluetooth audio codec can still connect, but it may use a slower fallback mode.
Qualcomm publishes an approximate 40 ms latency figure for aptX Low Latency when a transmitter running its aptX Low Latency encoder communicates with a compatible Bluetooth device. That is a Qualcomm technology specification, not an independent measurement of a PS5, a named speaker or a television. It is also not a promise that every aptX-labelled product uses the same implementation or that the delay will be imperceptible in every game.
Interpreting a successful connection
“Connected” only confirms that the radio link is established. It does not prove that the lowest-latency codec is active, that the transmitter is using its intended PS5 mode or that the result is suitable for competitive play. If the manufacturer’s software or indicator identifies the active codec, verify it. Otherwise, judge the result with an on-screen timing test and retain the option of wired audio.

Sony’s guidance for games that depend on response time is to use the TV speakers or a soundbar connected with HDMI or digital optical cable instead of Bluetooth. A wired path removes the Bluetooth radio and codec buffers, making delay more predictable.

TV speakers
Disconnect or disable the Bluetooth speaker and select the TV’s internal speakers. Keep the TV in game mode and use the TV’s normal audio format while testing. This is the quickest way to establish whether the wireless link is the source of the mismatch.
HDMI or digital optical soundbar
Connect the soundbar according to the TV or soundbar manual. If the TV exposes an A/V Sync control, test it in small increments. Sony also notes that connecting the console directly to a soundbar’s HDMI input can improve delay in some setups. That depends on the TV, soundbar, audio format and signal routing, so treat it as a troubleshooting option rather than a universal rule.
Optical connections avoid some HDMI-ARC processing paths but may limit supported formats. HDMI connections can carry more formats and control features but may involve ARC or eARC processing. Use the route that your equipment supports reliably and compare it with the TV-speaker baseline.

If you do not need room-filling sound, a PS5-compatible USB headset or an analog headset is another option. PlayStation states that most USB and analog headsets are supported, while third-party Bluetooth headsets are unsupported. This solves the personal-audio problem without making a Bluetooth speaker part of the console’s output chain, but it is not a substitute for a speaker when several people need to hear the game.

Step-by-step troubleshooting for noticeable delay
- Identify the pairing point. Confirm whether the speaker is paired with the TV or with a USB transmitter. It should not be paired directly with the PS5 as though it were a standard Bluetooth audio device.
- Establish a wired baseline. Use TV speakers for a minute. If the timing is correct there, the issue lies in the Bluetooth route or its processing rather than the game’s video output.
- Check the TV path. Verify that the TV actually supports Bluetooth audio output. Turn off unnecessary surround, virtualizer and audio-enhancement modes, then retest with the smallest A/V Sync correction possible.
- Check the transmitter path. Select the USB device under Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Confirm the transmitter’s PS5 mode, keep it away from USB hubs or sources of radio interference and re-pair the speaker.
- Audit codec compatibility. Read both manuals. The transmitter and speaker must explicitly share the same low-latency codec; one device advertising aptX Low Latency does not make a non-compatible partner use it.
- Test another speaker or wired output. This separates a speaker-specific buffer from a transmitter or TV problem. A different result does not establish a universal ranking; it only identifies which component changes the timing.
- Switch to wired audio for timing-sensitive sessions. If a delay remains obvious during rhythm, fighting or competitive play, use TV speakers or HDMI/optical audio rather than compensating with increasingly large sync values.
Symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | Most likely area to check | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| The PS5 cannot find the speaker | Unsupported direct Bluetooth pairing | Pair through a Bluetooth-capable TV or a PS5-compatible USB transmitter. |
| The speaker connects but sound is late | Bluetooth codec, TV processing or speaker buffer | Verify a shared low-latency codec, reduce processing and compare with TV speakers. |
| Sound cuts out or crackles | Distance, interference or competing pairing | Move the speaker closer, disconnect other hosts and repeat pairing. |
| Audio is aligned in menus but not in a game | Game response sensitivity or extra processing | Test game mode and wired audio; do not assume menu alignment proves game suitability. |
| Voice chat does not work through the transmitter | Audio-only USB transmitter | Use a PS5-supported USB or analog headset for chat, or follow the transmitter’s documented microphone solution. |
How to reduce delay without making unsupported promises
Use the shortest practical signal chain. Each additional processor—TV audio enhancement, surround virtualization, a soundbar mode or a speaker’s own DSP—can add buffering. Disable one feature at a time and retest, because changing several settings together makes it impossible to identify the cause.
Keep firmware current on the TV, transmitter and speaker when the manufacturer provides an update procedure. Firmware can change codec behavior or fix pairing defects, but an update cannot turn an unsupported PS5 connection into a Sony-guaranteed feature.
Do not judge synchronization using only speech in a video. Speech can conceal a small offset, while a click, gunshot, menu navigation sound or rhythm-game beat exposes it. Use a repeatable cue and compare the Bluetooth route with TV speakers or a wired soundbar.
Do not promise yourself “zero delay” because a product description uses the words low latency. The aptX Low Latency figure is an approximate codec specification under compatible conditions. TV processing, speaker buffering, codec fallback and the game’s own audio timing remain outside that figure.
What to check before purchasing any adapter or speaker
- PS5 support: The transmitter documentation should explicitly name PS5 audio operation, not merely Bluetooth or USB connectivity.
- Audio direction: Confirm that the device transmits console sound to a speaker. Many Bluetooth products are receivers only.
- Codec match: Record the exact codec names supported by both ends. “Bluetooth 5” describes a radio generation, not audio latency.
- Chat needs: Determine whether you need a microphone. Audio transmitters often do not provide a return path for voice chat.
- TV capability: For the TV route, verify Bluetooth audio output specifically; a TV that accepts Bluetooth headphones or keyboards is not necessarily able to transmit to a speaker.
- Return and support policy: Because Sony does not guarantee third-party adapter compatibility, buy only where you can return hardware that pairs but produces unacceptable delay.
Which setup should you use?
Choose the TV route when you already own a Bluetooth-capable TV and mainly play casual games or watch video. It requires no new transmitter, but the TV’s processing and Bluetooth implementation determine the result.
Choose a USB transmitter when wireless speaker sound is important and you are willing to verify PS5 support and a matching low-latency codec. Treat the transmitter as an optional workaround, not a native PS5 feature, and test the complete transmitter-and-speaker pair.
Choose TV speakers or wired HDMI/optical audio when an input must match an on-screen event. This is the path Sony recommends for games dependent on response time because it avoids the uncertainty of Bluetooth buffering.
