Block templates are reusable layouts that determine where WordPress displays dynamic content such as a post title, post content, archive results, navigation, headers, and footers. In a block theme, you edit them visually under Appearance > Editor > Templates. Save a shared template and every post or page assigned to it receives the new layout; create and assign a custom template when only one type of content or one page should look different.
What a block template does
A block template is a layout assembled from WordPress blocks. It supplies the structure around content rather than replacing the content stored in an individual post or page. For example, a single-post template can contain a header, post title, featured image, post metadata, post content, comments, a sidebar, and a footer. The Post Content block then inserts the body of whichever post is being viewed.
WordPress describes a block template as a list of block items. Those items can be static blocks, such as a heading or spacer, or dynamic template blocks that obtain information for the current request. Common dynamic blocks include Post Title, Post Content, Featured Image, Query Loop, Navigation, and Template Part.
This distinction explains a common surprise: changing a template does not rewrite the text of every post. It changes the shared layout that displays those posts. The post or page editor remains the place to edit an individual item’s title, paragraphs, images, and other content.

What you need before editing
Use a block theme for the full Site Editor
A block theme uses blocks for all major site areas, including navigation, the header, content area, and footer. When one is active, the dashboard normally exposes Appearance > Editor, with areas such as Templates, Styles, and Template Parts.
To check, open Appearance > Themes and inspect the active theme. Activate a block theme if you need the complete template-management workflow. The official Learn WordPress material identifies WordPress 5.9 or later with a block theme as the normal prerequisite for the Template Editor.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What happens with a classic theme
Classic themes do not generally expose the same Site Editor screens. Depending on the theme and its backend support, you may still see a template control while editing a post or page, but available templates and controls are more limited. If Appearance > Editor is absent, use the template selector in the Block Editor when it is provided, or follow the classic theme’s documented customization method.
Use the labels shown by your installation
Template names, available types, and button labels can vary by WordPress release and active theme. The concepts remain the same: open the editor, choose a template, modify its blocks, and save. If a label in this guide differs slightly from your dashboard, use the corresponding control displayed in your installation.
Templates, template parts, and content: the difference
| WordPress object | What it controls | Typical examples | Effect of saving a change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Template | The complete layout for a view or content type | Single Posts, Pages, Archives, Search, 404 | Every item using that template receives the new structure |
| Template Part | A reusable section placed inside templates | Header, footer, sidebar | Every template containing that part receives the updated section |
| Post or page content | The unique material for one item | Paragraphs, images, headings, embeds | Only that post or page changes |
| Template assignment | Which template a particular post or page uses | Default, a custom “Post with sidebar” template | That item switches layout without changing its stored content |
Think of a template as the frame, a template part as a reusable piece of the frame, and the post or page as the material placed inside it.

Choose the right editing approach
| Approach | Entry point | Scope | Best for | Where the change is saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Edit a shared template | Appearance > Editor > Templates | All content using that template | Site-wide layout changes | Database customization made in the editor |
| Edit from a post or page | Block Editor template control | The selected template, therefore potentially many items | Finding the relevant template while working on content | Database customization after confirmation |
| Create and assign a custom template | Site Editor or the post/page template control | Only items assigned to the custom template | One-off layouts or a distinct group of content | Database customization plus each item’s assignment |
| Edit theme files | Theme development workflow | The bundled template and sites using that theme | Developers distributing a block theme | Markup files in the theme’s /templates directory |
A saved editor customization takes precedence over the corresponding template file bundled with the theme. Keep that precedence in mind when a file edit appears not to change the site: an earlier Site Editor save may be overriding the file.
Edit a shared block template in the Site Editor
Use this workflow when every post, page, archive, or other view using the selected template should receive the same layout change.
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Appearance > Editor.
- Select Templates. Some releases show the template list immediately; others open the Site Editor first and then require selecting Templates.
- Choose the view you need, such as Single Posts, Pages, Archives, Search, or 404.
- Use the block inserter, list view, and block settings to change the layout. Add or arrange blocks such as Post Title, Post Content, Query Loop, Navigation, and Template Part.
- Click Save, review the confirmation panel, and confirm the save.
The saved layout is then used wherever that template applies. A change to a Single Posts template affects the layout surrounding the content of all posts using it; it does not merge one post’s paragraphs into another post.
Preview the dynamic result
Static headings and design blocks are visible immediately, but dynamic blocks render according to the page being viewed. Check a representative post, archive, or search page on the front end after saving. Test a post with and without a featured image if your layout depends on that block, and check a long title or long excerpt for wrapping problems.
Edit a template while editing a post or page
This route is useful when you are already working on content and need to inspect the template assigned to it.

- Open the post or page in the Block Editor.
- Open the Post or Page settings sidebar if it is hidden.
- Click the current template name in the template section.
- Choose Edit template.
- Modify the template’s blocks. You are editing the layout, not the current post’s stored paragraphs.
- Use Publish and then Save when WordPress asks you to confirm the template change.
While editing content, use View > Show template when that command is available. It displays the template around the content so you can see how the two layers fit together.
Before saving, check the template name carefully. If the editor opens a shared template, the change can affect every item assigned to it. If the goal is a one-page exception, create a custom template instead.
Create a custom block template
Start from the Site Editor
- Open Appearance > Editor > Templates.
- Click Add Template.
- Select the applicable content type, or choose Custom Template when that option is offered.
- Give the template a descriptive name, such as Post with sidebar or Landing page without header. Use a name that will still make sense months later.
- Build the layout with blocks. Include the dynamic blocks required for the view, especially Post Content when the template is intended to display an item’s body.
- Click Save and confirm.
Start from a post or page
- Open the post or page in the Block Editor.
- In the template control, select the add icon and choose New.
- Name the template and create it.
- Construct the layout with blocks and save it when prompted.
- In the settings sidebar, click the template name and select the new custom template for the current item.
Creating a template does not necessarily assign it automatically to every item of the same type. Assignment is a separate step. Select the custom template in each post or page that should use it, or apply it according to the options exposed by your installation.
How to avoid accidental site-wide changes
- Read the template name before editing. “Single Posts” and “Pages” are shared views, not one specific item.
- Use a custom template for an exception. If one page needs a different arrangement, create or select a custom template and assign it to that page.
- Separate layout from copy. Edit the template for columns, spacing, navigation, and dynamic blocks; edit the post or page for its words and media.
- Inspect template parts. Editing a Header or Footer template part can change every template that includes it, even when you started from a different view.
- Review the save confirmation. WordPress identifies the templates or parts being saved. Stop if the scope is broader than intended.
- Test representative URLs. Check more than the page currently open in the editor, including another post, an archive, search, and 404 when those views are affected.
Understanding the template hierarchy
WordPress chooses the most specific applicable template and falls back when that template is unavailable. A single-post request can therefore use a specialized template when one exists and a more general template when it does not. The exact hierarchy depends on the requested object and the theme’s available files, but the practical rule is simple: a more specific match wins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen troubleshooting, identify the URL type first: a single post, page, archive, search result, or 404 response. Then inspect the corresponding template in Appearance > Editor > Templates. Editing the wrong view will not change the URL you are testing.

Block-template files for theme developers
Block themes store template definitions as block markup in the theme’s /templates directory. The minimum required file for a block theme is index.html. More specific files can include single.html, page.html, archive.html, search.html, and 404.html.
A minimal template file is ordinary HTML containing WordPress block comments. For example:
<!-- wp:template-part {"slug":"header"} /-->
<!-- wp:group {"layout":{"type":"constrained"}} -->
<div class="wp-block-group">
<!-- wp:post-title /-->
<!-- wp:post-content /-->
</div>
<!-- /wp:group -->
<!-- wp:template-part {"slug":"footer"} /-->
The example places a reusable header and footer around a constrained group containing the current post title and content. Real themes may include additional attributes, styles, metadata, comments, and accessibility considerations.

When a user edits and saves a template in the Site Editor, WordPress stores that customization in the database. It can override the file supplied by the theme. Developers should account for this when testing updates, switching between file-based and editor-based changes, or distributing a theme to a fresh installation.

“Appearance > Editor” is missing
Confirm that a block theme is active. Classic themes may not provide the full Site Editor. If the site must remain on a classic theme, check whether its post/page editor offers a template control with backend support.

My change does not appear on the front end
- Verify that you edited the template matching the URL type you are testing.
- Check whether a more specific template is being selected by the hierarchy.
- Look for a saved Site Editor customization that overrides the file you edited.
- Confirm that the block was saved and that you are viewing the current site rather than a cached response.
- Inspect the template for the required dynamic block, especially Post Content or Query Loop.
Changing one layout changed many posts
You edited a shared template or template part. Restore the broader layout if necessary, then create a custom template and assign it only to the intended post or page. The original post content remains separate from the shared layout.
The custom template is not available for assignment
Save the template first, then reopen the post or page settings and inspect the template selector. A custom template created in the Site Editor may be listed under its exact name. If it still does not appear, confirm that the active theme and WordPress release support the custom-template workflow and that you are editing the correct content type.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The page is missing its content
Open the assigned template and check that it contains the appropriate dynamic block. A page template needs a Post Content block to display the page’s stored body. A listing view generally needs a Query Loop or another block intended to output multiple items.
The header or footer changed unexpectedly
Inspect the template’s Template Part blocks. A shared header or footer is reused wherever that part appears, so editing it has a wider scope than changing a single template’s local group.
Quick Recap
A practical workflow for safe redesigns
- Map the scope. Decide whether the change belongs to one item, a content type, every view, or a reusable part.
- Identify the view. Determine whether you are working with a single post, page, archive, search result, or 404 page.
- Check the theme. Confirm that the active theme is a block theme if you need the Site Editor.
- Choose the entry point. Use Appearance > Editor for shared layouts, or the post/page template control when you are already in the Block Editor.
- Make the smallest change. Reuse existing template parts and blocks instead of replacing an entire layout unnecessarily.
- Save deliberately. Read the list of templates and parts included in the save confirmation.
- Test several contexts. View representative content, a long title, a missing featured image, and the relevant archive or search view.
- Document exceptions. Record which posts or pages use custom templates so later site-wide edits do not accidentally erase their intended design.
Key points to remember
- A block template controls shared structure around dynamic content.
- The full Template Editor workflow normally requires a block theme and WordPress 5.9 or later.
- Editing a shared template affects every item that uses it; assigning a custom template limits a special layout to selected items.
- Template parts such as headers and footers have their own reuse scope.
- Theme developers store block-template markup in
/templates, withindex.htmlas the required fallback file. - Saved Site Editor customizations take precedence over bundled theme template files.
