In Radicle, you use Blade through the Sage theme layer and Acorn. Put views in resources/views/, keep WordPress’s normal Template Hierarchy for choosing a view, compose pages with layouts/app.blade.php and partials, and prepare recurring data in view Composers rather than inside markup.

This gives a WordPress theme Laravel-style templates without replacing WordPress routing. A request still resolves as a page, post, archive, author view, search result, or fallback according to the usual hierarchy; Sage renders the matching .blade.php file.

What Radicle, Sage, Acorn and Blade each do

Radicle is Roots’ opinionated starting point for WordPress projects. Its preferred stack brings together Acorn, Bedrock, Bud, Sage and Trellis. The Radicle announcement was published on March 28, 2023.

Sage is the theme layer. It uses Laravel’s Blade templating engine and includes Acorn, which supplies Blade views, view composers and asset-management integration. Bedrock provides the WordPress application structure, Bud handles the front-end build workflow, and Trellis is used for server provisioning in setups that adopt it. You therefore edit a Sage theme inside a larger WordPress stack rather than installing Blade as an unrelated plugin.

Where Radicle/Sage Blade files live

Blade views belong in the theme’s resources/views/ directory. Sage keeps the standard WordPress Template Hierarchy, so the filename and the request context determine which view is rendered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
WordPress situation Typical Blade view Purpose
Missing page, post or route 404.blade.php Displays the not-found response.
General fallback index.blade.php Last fallback when a more specific template is unavailable.
Normal page page.blade.php Renders pages that do not match a more specific page view.
Search results search.blade.php Renders the search request.
Single post or custom post single.blade.php General single-item view.
Project-defined custom template template-custom.blade.php A conventional custom-template view when the project defines and assigns one.
Shared page shell layouts/app.blade.php Base layout that wraps sections from child views.

Reusable fragments such as the header, footer, sidebar and content cards normally live under resources/views/partials/. Keeping those fragments separate prevents the same navigation or card markup from being copied into every page template.

How WordPress chooses a Blade view

Use the same naming rules you would use with ordinary PHP templates. Sage changes the rendering syntax, not the hierarchy that WordPress follows.

  • Author archive: copy or adapt index.blade.php as author.blade.php when you need an author-specific archive.
  • Blog home: use home.blade.php for the posts index.
  • Custom post-type archive: use archive-gallery.blade.php for a post type whose key is gallery.
  • Static front page: use front-page.blade.php when the request is the site’s configured front page.
  • Page by slug: use page-about.blade.php for a page whose slug is about.

When more than one candidate could match, WordPress applies its normal specificity order and eventually falls back to index.blade.php. If a view is not being used, verify the request context and filename before changing Blade code.

Build a first Blade page

The following pattern gives a page a shared shell, a content section and a partial that receives an explicit variable.

1. Create or edit the view

Create resources/views/page.blade.php for the general page view. A slug-specific page can instead use the corresponding page-{slug}.blade.php filename.

@extends('layouts.app')

@section('content')
  <main class='page-content'>
    <h1>{{ $title }}</h1>
    @include('partials.card', ['item' => $item])
  </main>
@endsection

@extends('layouts.app') refers to resources/views/layouts/app.blade.php without the directory prefix or file extension. The child view fills the section named content; the variables must be available to that view through the controller-like preparation that Sage or a Composer performs.

2. Define the base layout

The layout owns the document shell and declares insertion points with @yield.

<!doctype html>
<html>
  <body>
    <header>@yield('header')</header>
    <main>@yield('content')</main>
    <footer>@yield('footer')</footer>
  </body>
</html>

A child view can provide header or footer sections when needed. If a child section should retain the layout’s existing output and add to it, use @parent inside that section before adding the child markup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Add the partial

Create resources/views/partials/card.blade.php:

<article class='card'>
  <h2>{{ $item->post_title }}</h2>
</article>

An included view receives its own scope. Pass small, local inputs with the keyed second argument, as in ['item' => $item], rather than relying on an undocumented variable being available everywhere.

Blade syntax you will use most often

Escaped values

{{ $value }} is the safer default for text because Blade escapes the output for HTML. Use it for titles, labels, user-entered text and other values that should be displayed rather than interpreted as markup.

Unescaped values

Blade also supports {!! $content !!} for unescaped output. Use this only when the value is trusted and has already been sanitized for the context in which it will be printed. The fact that WordPress content may contain HTML is not, by itself, a reason to bypass escaping for arbitrary data.

Includes

@include('partials.example-partial') renders a reusable view. Add a keyed array for explicit inputs: @include('partials.card', ['item' => $item]). This keeps a partial’s contract visible at the call site and makes it easier to reuse in another template.

Layouts and sections

Use @extends once in a child view, define output with @section, and close each section with @endsection. The layout’s @yield directives determine where those sections appear. This structure is preferable to duplicating the full HTML document in every WordPress template.

Passing WordPress data into Blade views

There are two useful levels of data passing:

  • Small, local values: pass them directly to an include with its keyed array.
  • Queried or transformed values used by a view repeatedly: prepare them in a Composer and bind the resulting variables to the view.

Roots recommends Composers to separate data preparation from presentation. A Composer is the place to run or transform the query, select the fields a view needs and expose a predictable variable. The Blade file should then concentrate on HTML, conditionals and loops instead of embedding query logic in the markup.

For a one-off page value, a child view might render {{ $title }} and pass a related object to a card partial. For a listing used by several templates, bind the listing in a Composer and let each view decide how to display it. This separation also makes it clearer which data a template expects and avoids repeating the same preparation code across page, archive and single views.

Create a custom WordPress page template with Blade

Choose the filename from the kind of customization you need, then keep the implementation in a normal Blade child view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the request: decide whether the page is the front page, a page with a known slug, a post-type archive, an author archive or a general page.
  2. Create the matching file: use front-page.blade.php, page-about.blade.php, archive-gallery.blade.php, author.blade.php or another hierarchy name under resources/views/.
  3. Extend the shared shell: start with @extends('layouts.app') so the page inherits the project layout.
  4. Declare the required section: place the page markup in the section that the layout yields, normally content.
  5. Prepare data outside the markup: use a Composer when the page needs a query or transformed data; use a keyed include argument for a small fragment.
  6. Load the request in WordPress: test the exact URL and confirm that its context matches the filename you chose.

A slug-specific view is not interchangeable with the static front-page view. A page whose slug is about matches page-about.blade.php; the configured front page matches front-page.blade.php even if its slug is different.

Keep templates maintainable

Put repeated structure in the layout

The layout should own the document-level elements and stable regions. Child views should provide page-specific sections. If a region is shared but more granular than a full section, make it a partial.

Use partials for repeated components

Cards, navigation groups, alerts and sidebars are good partial candidates. Give each include the values it needs through a keyed array so a change in one partial does not depend on hidden variables from an unrelated template.

Keep queries out of presentation where practical

When a query or transformation is needed repeatedly, move it to a Composer. This reduces duplicated logic and gives the view a stable, presentation-focused interface. It also makes it easier to inspect or change data preparation without rewriting HTML.

Build and deploy a Radicle/Sage theme

A production deployment needs both compiled front-end assets and Composer dependencies. Roots lists this deployment sequence for a Sage-based project:

  1. Run npm run build to create the production assets.
  2. Run composer install --no-dev --optimize-autoloader to install production PHP dependencies with an optimized autoloader.
  3. Upload the theme without the node_modules directory.

Use the same PHP version in development and production. A mismatch can produce failures that do not appear on a developer workstation, particularly when dependencies or language features differ.

Compile and clear Blade views

Acorn provides WP-CLI commands for the compiled view cache:

Command Use it when Result
wp acorn view:cache You want to compile all Blade templates. Acorn compiles the views for faster loading and predictable production behavior.
wp acorn view:clear A changed template is not being reflected or you need a clean recompilation. The compiled Blade views are removed.
wp acorn optimize You are preparing a deployment. Acorn caches configuration and views as part of optimization.

Run these commands in the WordPress environment where WP-CLI and Acorn are installed. After changing a template on a server, clear or rebuild the view cache before diagnosing a stale-rendering problem.

Protect Blade source files

A .blade.php file contains source code. If a web server serves it as plain text instead of routing it through PHP, visitors could download template logic and embedded implementation details. Production rules must deny direct access to Blade source files while still allowing the application to render them internally.

Roots documents deny rules for Nginx and Apache. Projects provisioned with Trellis or Radicle can skip the manual server-configuration portion because provisioning is intended to create the required protections, but you should still inspect the generated environment and web-server rules after each deployment. Do not assume that a different host has identical defaults.

Radicle/Sage Blade versus conventional WordPress PHP templates

Both approaches use WordPress’s hierarchy. The practical difference is how the theme organizes markup, data preparation and build dependencies.

Decision area Conventional PHP templates Radicle/Sage Blade
Template reuse Reuse generally relies on PHP includes and project conventions. Layouts, sections and @include provide a consistent composition model.
Data separation Queries are often mixed into template files unless the project establishes another layer. Composers are the documented place to prepare and bind recurring view data.
Hierarchy compatibility Uses WordPress filenames directly. Preserves the same hierarchy with .blade.php views.
Build and dependencies Can work with a minimal PHP theme toolchain. Uses the Radicle/Sage stack, including Acorn, Composer and the Bud-based asset workflow.
Deployment work Usually centers on PHP files and any chosen asset process. Requires a production asset build, Composer installation, view-cache handling and removal of node_modules from the uploaded theme.
Server security PHP source still needs appropriate server handling. Blade source specifically must not be downloadable; Trellis/Radicle provisioning is intended to configure the protection.
Measured performance Not stated in the official material used here. Not stated in the official material used here; treat the choice as an architecture and workflow decision, not a published benchmark result.

Choose Radicle/Sage Blade when the project benefits from structured layouts, reusable partials, Composer-based data preparation and the integrated Roots workflow. A conventional PHP theme can be simpler when the team does not want the additional build and dependency layers. Neither option changes the WordPress hierarchy itself.

Troubleshoot common problems

The wrong template renders

Check the request type and the exact filename under resources/views/. A slug-specific page, static front page, custom post-type archive and blog home each have different hierarchy names. If no specific file matches, WordPress eventually uses index.blade.php.

A variable is undefined

Confirm that the view receives the variable from its data-preparation layer. For a partial, pass it explicitly in the keyed second argument to @include. If several views need the same queried value, bind it through a Composer instead of assuming that a variable from another view will be in scope.

Changes do not appear

Clear the compiled views with wp acorn view:clear, then rebuild them with wp acorn view:cache or run wp acorn optimize as part of the deployment process. Also confirm that the edited file is the one selected by the hierarchy.

Assets work locally but fail after deployment

Run npm run build, install production PHP dependencies with the optimized Composer command, upload the built theme without node_modules and verify that the production PHP version matches development. A Blade template can render correctly while its compiled CSS or JavaScript is missing, so inspect the asset output separately.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visitors can see template source

Stop serving the affected files publicly and review the Nginx or Apache deny rules. If Trellis or Radicle provisioning was used, inspect the generated configuration rather than adding a second, conflicting rule by guesswork.

A deployment behaves differently from development

Compare PHP versions, installed Composer dependencies, built assets, Acorn view-cache state and web-server rules. These are separate layers; matching only the Blade files is not enough to reproduce the runtime environment.

A practical workflow for new Radicle projects

  1. Start by mapping each URL type to its WordPress hierarchy name.
  2. Create the smallest matching view in resources/views/ and extend layouts/app.blade.php.
  3. Extract repeated markup into resources/views/partials/.
  4. Use escaped Blade output by default and reserve unescaped output for trusted, sanitized content.
  5. Pass local partial data explicitly and move recurring query preparation into Composers.
  6. Test the exact page, archive, search and error URLs that the project supports.
  7. Build assets, install production dependencies, compile or optimize Acorn views and verify that Blade files cannot be downloaded.

This workflow preserves WordPress’s routing model while giving the theme a clear boundary between data preparation, layout composition and rendered markup.
