To use Bitwarden Send, open Send in a Bitwarden app, create a text or file Send, set when it should be deleted and who can access it, then save and share the generated link. Recipients do not need a Bitwarden account, but you can require a password or email verification before they can view it.
Create and share a Send in the web app
-
Open Bitwarden and select Send, then select New.
-
Choose Text or File and enter a name. The name is visible to people who open the Send.
-
For a text Send, enter your message. For a file Send, choose the file and confirm that your account meets the file-Send requirements.

Bitwarden documents Send creation in its [Create & Edit a Send] guide for the web app, browser extension, desktop, and mobile apps. Available settings can differ by client.
Choose text or file—and check the limits
Text Sends are available to all Bitwarden users. File Sends require Premium or membership in a paid organization, and the account email must be verified. Bitwarden’s creation guide lists a maximum file size of 500 MB per Send, reduced to 100 MB on mobile.

A text Send has a 1,000-character encrypted limit. Bitwarden says encryption can increase the text length by about 30–50%, so a message close to 1,000 characters before encryption may not fit. If it does not save, shorten the message and try again.

Recipients can open a Send without a Bitwarden account. The sender can also hide their email address from viewers. With password or email-verification restrictions, Bitwarden says the address remains hidden until the recipient passes that step. For text, you can enable Hide text by default, which requires the recipient to reveal the message.

Deletion date: determines when the Send is removed. Bitwarden says the default is seven days. Its [creation guide] states a maximum of 30 days, while its [lifespan guide] states 31 days. Because the official pages conflict, follow the date options shown in your current app.

-
Expiration date: can end recipient access earlier than deletion. The Send can remain available to you until its deletion date.
-
Maximum access count: can stop recipient access after a set number of uses. Bitwarden says the Send remains available to its sender until deletion. The access ticker counts link access for text Sends and downloads for file Sends.
Bitwarden notes that expiration and access-count controls are available only in some clients. You can also deactivate or delete a Send manually. These controls govern access through Bitwarden; they cannot stop a recipient from copying or photographing content after viewing it.
What Bitwarden says about Send encryption
Bitwarden’s [About Send] page says: “Data is encrypted on creation and only decrypted when a recipient opens the link.” It also says the generated link does not contain data related to the Send’s contents. These are Bitwarden’s descriptions of its design, not a guarantee about what a recipient does with content after opening it.
Create or receive a Send with the CLI
Bitwarden documents bw send for creating text and file Sends. Its examples cover deletion duration, hidden text, and maximum access count; its advanced create flow supports password and email restrictions. A recipient can use bw receive with the Send link and, if required, the password. Consult Bitwarden’s current [Send from CLI] documentation for syntax and client-version compatibility.
