WordPress 6.5 and later can upload and display AVIF images when the hosting server’s image library supports AVIF. Check Tools → Site Health → Info → Media Handling first, then upload ready-made AVIF files or convert an existing library with a compatible plugin. Keep WebP or JPEG/PNG fallbacks when browser, social-sharing, or plugin compatibility is uncertain.
What AVIF support in WordPress actually means
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It can deliver photographs, illustrations, screenshots, and transparency with fewer transferred bytes than many JPEG or PNG files at a comparable visual quality. The saving is not guaranteed for every image: it depends on the source, encoder, dimensions, chroma settings, and quality level.

The feature is conditional, however. WordPress relies on the server’s image-processing stack, usually GD or Imagick, and that library must have AVIF decoding and, where required, encoding enabled. A site can therefore run WordPress 6.5 or newer and still reject AVIF files or fail to create derivatives if the host’s libraries were built without AVIF capability.
When the stack supports it, AVIF participates in normal WordPress image behavior. Core retains responsive-image features such as generated sizes and srcset, and it can still apply fetch-priority and lazy-loading attributes. The format itself does not remove the need to size images sensibly or to test the page on the devices and browsers your visitors use.

Check the WordPress and hosting prerequisites
Confirm the WordPress version
Use WordPress 6.5 or a later release for native AVIF upload and handling. Earlier versions need a plugin or an external conversion and delivery workflow, and their MIME, editor, and thumbnail behavior can differ. Update WordPress, the active theme, and image-related plugins in a staging environment first if the site is business-critical.
Inspect Media Handling in Site Health
- Sign in as an administrator and open Tools → Site Health.
- Select the Info tab.
- Expand Media Handling.
- Review the supported image formats and look for AVIF.
If AVIF appears, the server has at least the advertised capability needed for core processing. If it does not appear, do not infer that the file is corrupt. Ask the host which GD or Imagick version is active and whether it was compiled with AVIF support. Hosts can run different library builds, even when they offer the same PHP and WordPress versions.

If the host cannot enable AVIF, an external or plugin-based converter can create files elsewhere and deliver them without requiring the web server to encode every image. Check the converter’s storage, CDN, and rollback requirements before changing a production media library.
Upload a ready-made AVIF file
This route is appropriate when an editor or a separate conversion tool has already produced an AVIF file and you want WordPress to manage it like another image asset.

- Export or convert the source image to
.avif. Keep the original file separately so you can recreate a different quality setting later. - In the dashboard, go to Media → Add New.
- Choose the AVIF file or drag it into the upload area. A successful upload should create a Media Library item.
- Open the attachment and insert it into a post or page using the normal image block, or select it from the media picker in another block.
- Preview the page at the intended display widths. Inspect the rendered image and, if you use browser developer tools, check the network request to see which format and generated size were returned.
Uploading one large source does not make an oversized image efficient. Set the source dimensions close to the largest size at which it will be displayed, and let WordPress generate appropriate derivatives. A 4,000-pixel image used in a 700-pixel content column still creates unnecessary transfer and decode work even when the container is AVIF.
Convert an existing Media Library
There are two practical approaches. A small site can convert selected originals outside WordPress and upload the resulting files. A larger site generally benefits from a conversion and delivery plugin that can process many attachments, create derivatives, and choose a format per browser.
Manual conversion for a few images
- Back up the original files and the database record that references them.
- Convert a copy of each JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP image with an editor or trusted conversion utility.
- Compare the AVIF visually with the original, paying particular attention to text, fine lines, gradients, transparency, and faces.
- Upload the approved AVIF files through Media → Add New.
- Replace the image in the relevant content, template, or custom-field value and check responsive sizes, feeds, and social metadata.
Uploading a new AVIF attachment does not automatically replace every reference to the old attachment. Theme templates, page-builder fields, CSS backgrounds, XML feeds, Open Graph images, and email templates may continue to point to the original path.
Bulk conversion with Images to AVIF
The Images to AVIF plugin listing describes conversion for PNG, JPG, GIF, and WebP files. It requires PHP 5.6 or newer and GD or Imagick with AVIF support. Its documented ?no_avif=1 URL option retrieves the original file, which can provide a recovery path when a converted response is unsuitable.

Before starting a bulk job, verify the plugin’s current WordPress compatibility and its quality controls. Confirm where converted files are stored, whether originals remain untouched, how generated thumbnail sizes are handled, and whether the plugin changes attachment URLs or only changes delivery. Run a small batch first, clear the relevant caches, and inspect representative posts before processing the whole library.
Bulk conversion and negotiation with Converter for Media
Converter for Media can check whether a visitor’s browser supports AVIF, serve WebP when AVIF is unavailable, and use WP-CLI for faster conversion. Its listing states that WordPress files and Media Library images must be on the same server, so an offloaded-media arrangement may need a different configuration or tool.

Use its browser negotiation only after confirming that the cache and CDN vary responses correctly. A cache that stores one visitor’s AVIF response and serves it to a browser that cannot decode AVIF can produce a broken image. Check the plugin documentation for the exact rewrite method, supported server software, and current command syntax before enabling it on a live site.
Keep originals during the migration
- Retain the original JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP files until every important template and derivative has been checked.
- Record the conversion date, quality setting, and tool version so a future editor can reproduce a result.
- Check available disk space: bulk conversion can temporarily or permanently add files for multiple sizes and formats.
- Confirm that backups include both the Media Library files and the database rows that associate attachments with posts.
- Define a rollback method before replacing references, such as restoring the previous files or disabling the delivery rewrite.
Choose an AVIF-only or fallback delivery strategy
An AVIF-only path is simplest, but it is appropriate only when you have verified that the browsers, crawlers, social tools, and plugins important to your audience can consume it. WordPress Core advises avoiding AVIF for a significant audience using unsupported browsers or adding a compatibility layer.

For custom markup, a typical pattern is:

</picture>Use the pattern only where you control the template. WordPress’s normal image block can continue to provide responsive attributes, while a hand-written element must be maintained for every needed width. Do not assume that adding a source element automatically fixes a CDN or cache that ignores the negotiated format.
Preserve responsive images, priority, and accessibility
Changing the file format should not require removing WordPress’s responsive behavior. Keep the generated srcset and sizes values appropriate to the layout so a phone does not download a desktop-sized source. If a plugin replaces markup, compare the resulting HTML with the original and verify that width, height, srcset, and sizes are still present where expected.

Keep meaningful alternative text, a defined width and height, and a useful loading policy. The largest above-the-fold image may need fetch priority rather than lazy loading, while below-the-fold images can remain lazy-loaded. AVIF compression does not compensate for missing dimensions, which can cause layout shifts, or for an incorrect priority choice.

The WordPress Core Performance Team stated in 2024 that “AVIF images can be up to 50% smaller than JPEGs while maintaining the same image quality.” “Up to” is an upper-bound-style claim, not a guaranteed reduction for your files. Some screenshots, flat-color graphics, or already optimized WebP images may show little improvement; other photographs may show a substantial one.

Create a representative test set containing at least a photograph, a screenshot with text, a transparent graphic, a gradient, and the largest hero image. For each source, compare the file size and visual result at the quality settings you plan to use. Inspect fine details at 100 percent, then review the complete page at normal viewing distance.
- Record encoded bytes for each responsive width, not only the original.
- Check Largest Contentful Paint and total transfer size on a representative mobile connection.
- Look for ringing, banding, softened text, color shifts, and transparency defects.
- Observe decode and scrolling behavior on a lower-powered device; smaller files can still require meaningful decode work.
- Repeat the check after enabling a CDN, page cache, or image optimization layer, because delivery rules can change the selected format.
Social sharing, feeds, and plugin compatibility
Web pages and social platforms do not necessarily use the same image pipeline. A social crawler, newsletter system, RSS consumer, sitemap integration, or third-party editor may expect JPEG or PNG even when browsers display AVIF correctly. Keep a compatible social preview image where the service’s documented requirements call for one, and inspect the generated Open Graph or equivalent metadata after conversion.

A plugin may accept an AVIF attachment but fail to edit it, generate a derivative, or export it. Test those workflows before deleting originals or changing attachment URLs.
Troubleshoot common AVIF failures
The upload is rejected
- Confirm that the site runs WordPress 6.5 or newer.
- Recheck Tools → Site Health → Info → Media Handling for AVIF.
- Ask the host whether the active GD or Imagick build has AVIF decoding and encoding enabled.
- Verify that the file really has an
.avifextension and a valid AVIF MIME type; re-export a small test file if necessary. - Check upload-size, PHP, web-server, and security-plugin limits after format support is confirmed.
The file uploads, but thumbnails or edits fail
Successful decoding of an original does not prove that the server can encode every derivative. Ask which image library and AVIF codec are active and whether encoding is supported, not merely viewing. If the host cannot provide complete support, use a converter that performs processing elsewhere and leave the original available for WordPress operations that still need it.
Visitors see a broken image
- Inspect the response in the browser’s network panel and confirm the MIME type matches the bytes being returned.
- Test the same page in an AVIF-capable browser and in a browser or test mode that follows the fallback.
- Check whether the cache or CDN is varying its response by the browser’s accepted formats.
- Temporarily enable a WebP or JPEG/PNG fallback to separate an encoding problem from a delivery-negotiation problem.
Bulk conversion stops or never starts
- Check PHP execution and memory limits, scheduled-task health, and server timeouts.
- Confirm sufficient disk space for originals, converted files, and responsive derivatives.
- Use WP-CLI only when the selected plugin documents it and the command runs under the same site user and filesystem permissions.
- For Converter for Media, verify the documented same-server requirement for WordPress files and Media Library images.
- Process smaller batches and record which attachments completed so a retry does not create confusing duplicates.
A URL still serves the original format
Conversion and delivery are separate operations. Confirm that the plugin actually rewrites responses or markup rather than merely generating an AVIF copy. Then inspect theme templates, page caches, CDN rules, image-offload settings, and hard-coded CSS backgrounds that may bypass the plugin’s path. Purge affected caches only after the new files and fallback behavior are verified.
A practical rollout plan
- Inventory: list the image locations that matter, including posts, templates, CSS, feeds, social metadata, and offloaded media.
- Check capability: verify WordPress 6.5 or newer and inspect Media Handling for AVIF.
- Back up: preserve the database and original media before conversion.
- Pilot: convert a small set covering photographs, screenshots, transparency, and hero images.
- Choose delivery: decide between AVIF-only and AVIF with WebP or original fallback based on your audience and integrations.
- Validate: inspect HTML, MIME types, responsive sizes, cache behavior, accessibility, social previews, and visual quality.
- Measure: compare bytes and page metrics on representative devices and connections.
- Expand: process the remaining library in controlled batches and retain a documented rollback path.
- Monitor: watch error logs, image requests, cache misses, and support reports after release.
When AVIF is the right choice
Use AVIF when your host or conversion service can process it reliably, the measured files are meaningfully smaller at an acceptable quality, and your delivery layer can provide a safe fallback where needed. Keep WebP or JPEG/PNG alongside it when browser coverage, social sharing, editing tools, or legacy integrations are important. The strongest implementation is not the one with the fewest formats; it is the one that serves an appropriate file to each visitor without breaking WordPress’s responsive images or the workflows around them.
