Attack reconstruction turns preserved digital evidence into a defensible account of a security incident: what happened, in what sequence, which systems or information may have been affected, and what remains uncertain. The practical method is to define the questions, preserve relevant evidence, examine artifacts, correlate observations, test competing explanations, and report findings and decisions. It is an evidence-led process, not a promise that every incident can be reconstructed completely.
What attack reconstruction establishes
An alert list tells responders that systems produced signals worth investigating. A reconstruction explains how those signals relate: which events are supported by artifacts, how they may fit into a sequence, what impact can be established, and where evidence is missing or ambiguous. The distinction matters because an alert, timestamp, or familiar tool name is not by itself a complete account of an incident.
NIST describes forensic analysis as seeking an explanation of an incident’s root cause. In practice, the account should distinguish direct observations from interpretations. An authentication record may show a successful sign-in at a particular time; attributing that sign-in to an intruder, and linking it to a later action, requires additional evidence and reasoning. A sound report makes that boundary visible rather than presenting an inference as a recorded fact.

The answers may be incomplete. A useful reconstruction states the limits instead of filling gaps with a confident-sounding story.
Use a lifecycle, not a rigid forensic recipe
NIST SP 800-86 organizes forensic work into four phases: collection, examination, analysis, and reporting. The phases help responders separate acquiring evidence from interpreting it and communicating conclusions. They need not be treated as a one-way sequence: a finding may expose a gap that requires additional collection, with the new material examined and analyzed under the same controls.
| Phase | Purpose | Practical output |
|---|---|---|
| Collection | Identify and acquire relevant data while preserving its integrity and recording how it was obtained. | Evidence items with provenance and handling records. |
| Examination | Use forensic techniques to identify and extract relevant information from collected data. | Observations tied to specific artifacts. |
| Analysis | Correlate observations, evaluate explanations, and determine what the evidence supports. | A qualified sequence, impact assessment, and unresolved questions. |
| Reporting | Present findings, limits, decisions, and recommended actions to the people who need them. | A traceable account that supports response and recovery decisions. |
SP 800-86 is a foundational guide published in 2006, not a current catalog of threats, tools, or a universal procedure. NIST explicitly cautions: “This publication is not to be used as an all-inclusive step-by-step guide for executing a digital forensic investigation or construed as legal advice.” See NIST SP 800-86. Adapt the lifecycle to the incident, environment, available evidence, and applicable organizational requirements.
Step 1: Define the investigation questions and response constraints
Before collecting everything that might be available, identify what the team needs to establish and which decisions depend on the answer. A focused question set makes the evidence plan more useful and helps balance investigation against urgent response needs.
Set the questions and scope
Choose questions relevant to the incident rather than assuming every investigation needs the same checklist. Depending on the situation, responders may need to establish likely initial access, the sequence of activity, accounts and systems involved, possible data access or exfiltration, persistence, and the incident’s current scope. Record which questions are urgent and which can be answered later.
Identify decision owners and constraints
Determine who can authorize isolation, account changes, or other containment measures, and who owns recovery decisions. Identify continuity, safety, legal, regulatory, and contractual considerations that may affect evidence handling or system changes. NIST SP 800-86 advises organizations to consult management and legal counsel about applicable rules; its guidance is not legal advice. A forensic plan does not replace advice from the organization’s qualified counsel.

Response and reconstruction can compete for time. If an action is needed to limit harm, do not treat exhaustive collection as an automatic prerequisite. Record what was changed or unavailable, who made the decision, when it occurred, and why. Those facts help later readers understand the effect of response actions on the evidence.
Step 2: Identify and preserve relevant evidence
Build an evidence plan around the affected systems and the questions you need to answer. NIST SP 800-86 identifies files, operating-system data, network traffic, and application data as potential sources. Which ones matter depends on the incident and on what the environment actually retains. The goal is relevant, trustworthy evidence—not indiscriminate accumulation.
Map questions to sources
For each investigation question, note which source could support or challenge an answer. For example, a question about account activity might lead to authentication records; a question about activity on a host might require operating-system or file artifacts; an application-specific question may require the application’s records. Network observations can contribute a separate view of communications. These are candidate categories, not a guarantee that a particular artifact exists or was retained.
Consider whether sources are available, how long records are retained, who controls access, and whether acquisition could affect a system or service. If a source is missing, record that limitation. Do not infer that an event did not occur merely because a log that might have recorded it is unavailable.
Record provenance during acquisition
Preserve enough context to assess where an item came from and how it was handled. For each acquisition, record the system or device, collection time and time zone, collector, tool or method, source location, integrity checks where used, and subsequent access or handling steps. Follow organizational evidence-handling procedures, including use of controlled copies where appropriate. No particular commercial product is required by the NIST process guidance.

Step 3: Examine artifacts before building the narrative
Examination is the work of finding and extracting relevant information from collected material; analysis is the work of deciding what that information means in context. Keeping them distinct reduces the risk that an early theory will shape what investigators notice or how they describe it.
Keep observations separate from interpretations
Maintain an observation log tied to the evidence item and the method used to inspect it. Record what the artifact literally shows before describing its significance. For instance, a record may contain an account name, an event type, and a timestamp. Whether the account was compromised, whether the action was unauthorized, and whether it connects to another event are interpretations that require supporting analysis.
Protect originals and track transformations
Preserve originals according to organizational procedure and work from controlled copies where appropriate. If material is filtered, converted, normalized, or otherwise transformed for analysis, keep enough information to identify the source and explain the transformation. This makes it possible for another responder to understand how an observation was derived.

Do not quietly discard inconvenient or apparently irrelevant observations. They may matter when testing a competing explanation or resolving a timeline conflict. If an item cannot be interpreted, say so and distinguish that uncertainty from evidence that affirmatively rules something out.
Step 4: Correlate observations into a timeline
A timeline is a working model of sequence, not a set of timestamps that automatically agree. Different systems may record time differently; clocks can drift; telemetry can be incomplete; and retention boundaries can remove the events needed to fill a gap. Normalize times to a declared standard for comparison, but preserve the original time and time zone so the conversion can be understood and checked.
Build a traceable working table
Use a table that links each proposed event to its source and confidence. A practical set of columns is:

| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Time and time zone | The observed time, the time standard used in the working timeline, and any known clock offset or uncertainty. |
| System or account | The device, service, or account associated with the observation, as supported by the artifact. |
| Observed event | A concise description of what the source records, without embedding an unproven cause. |
| Source artifact | The evidence item and relevant location or record that supports the observation. |
| Interpretation | How the observation may relate to the incident, clearly separated from the recorded fact. |
| Confidence and gaps | How strongly the evidence supports the proposed placement or connection, and what is missing or conflicting. |
Corroborate across sources and expose conflicts
Where possible, compare independent views—for example, authentication records, endpoint artifacts, application activity, and network observations. Independence matters: two records that derive from the same underlying event may not provide as much corroboration as distinct sources. State which sources support a timeline entry instead of presenting the timeline alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMark gaps visibly. If two sources disagree, preserve both observations and describe plausible limitations, such as clock skew or incomplete logging. Do not silently force them into one chronology. The specific correlation method should fit the systems involved; NIST’s framework supports examining multiple data types and analyzing collected information, but does not prescribe one universal correlation technique.
Step 5: Test the leading explanation against alternatives
Once a possible sequence emerges, try to disprove it. For each important claim, ask what evidence should exist if the explanation were true, whether that evidence is present, whether it could have another cause, and what independent source might confirm or refute it.
- Check expected evidence: Identify observations that would reasonably be expected under the hypothesis, while recognizing that missing telemetry may make them unavailable.
- Consider benign explanations: Ask whether authorized administration or another ordinary activity could produce the same artifact.
- Seek independent corroboration: Look for a separate source that supports or challenges the proposed connection.
- Preserve disconfirming observations: Include evidence that complicates the preferred account instead of explaining it away without support.
- Limit attribution: Do not claim an attacker’s identity or intent from a tool name, indicator, or technique alone.
There is no universal attribution method established by the NIST materials cited here. Keep attribution claims narrow, explain their evidentiary basis, and qualify them separately from conclusions about activity on the affected systems.
Illustrative example: a disputed account sequence
Suppose an investigation finds a successful account sign-in, followed by a change recorded by an application. The first observation does not by itself prove the sign-in was unauthorized, and the sequence alone does not prove that the account activity caused the application change. Responders would preserve the records and their time context, check whether independent endpoint or network observations support a connection, and consider whether legitimate administration could explain the activity. If the available evidence cannot resolve those possibilities, the report should describe the competing explanations and the specific gap rather than declare one confirmed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 6: Report findings that support decisions
Reporting is a distinct phase, not a short recap appended after analysis. A useful report lets a decision-maker see what is supported, how it is supported, what remains uncertain, and what action follows. NIST’s current general incident-response guidance is SP 800-61 Rev. 3, listed as final and released April 3, 2025; Rev. 2 was withdrawn and superseded on that date. The status appears on NIST’s incident-response publications index and the SP 800-61 Rev. 2 page.

Make findings traceable
For each material conclusion, cite the evidence items that support it and distinguish direct observations from inferences. Describe the supported sequence, affected assets and data, confidence, assumptions, and unresolved questions. Include collection limitations, relevant gaps, and known time uncertainty so readers can judge the strength of the account.
Connect the account to response and recovery
Record containment and recovery actions already taken, along with recommendations and the decisions they require. Separate an established fact from a proposed next step. NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework Respond guidance emphasizes planning, playbooks, testing, improving recovery, and learning from past events; see NIST Cybersecurity Framework Respond guidance. A reconstruction is useful when it informs safe, proportionate action, not merely when it produces a detailed chronology.
Adjust the method for operational technology
Do not transfer an IT-first evidence plan mechanically to operational technology (OT). OT environments can make availability and process safety central to the order and timing of response actions. NIST IR 8428 explains that OT incident response may aim to gather enough forensic understanding to contain and recover a system safely; that balance may differ from an IT investigation focused on immediate restoration or exhaustive forensic detail. See the NIST IR 8428 OT DFIR framework, published June 22, 2022, and its publication description.

| Consideration | IT investigation | OT investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence plan | Choose sources according to the incident, system, and available telemetry. | Choose sources with OT operators and safety owners, accounting for process and system constraints. |
| Response priority | Balance evidence collection with containment, continuity, and recovery needs. | Sequence collection and response around safe containment and recovery of the operational process. |
| Forensic depth before action | Collect what is relevant and feasible without treating exhaustive collection as an automatic prerequisite. | Enough understanding for safe action may take priority over examining every forensic detail. |
| Coordination | Engage decision owners and relevant organizational stakeholders. | Include OT operators and safety owners in decisions affecting operations. |
This is a difference in response priorities, not a reason to abandon evidence integrity. Record what was collected, what could not be collected, and how safety or availability constraints shaped the sequence. NIST IR 8428 is OT-specific and addresses preparation, incident handling, and OT forensic techniques; it also notes the need for training and practice to build proficiency.
Common reconstruction failures to avoid
- Treating alerts as a complete narrative: Alerts are leads. Tie conclusions to artifacts and explain how separate observations are connected.
- Mixing observation and inference: Keep the literal contents of an artifact distinct from what the investigator believes they mean.
- Assuming timestamps are exact: Declare the time standard, retain original times, and note drift, missing telemetry, and retention limits.
- Ignoring contrary evidence: Preserve conflicts and test alternatives rather than forcing every fact into a preferred account.
- Overstating absence: A missing record may reflect unavailable or incomplete logging; it does not necessarily establish that an event did not happen.
- Making unsupported attribution claims: A tool, indicator, or technique alone does not establish who acted or why.
- Collecting without decision context: Preserve evidence in a way that supports the investigation, but account for containment, legal, continuity, and—in OT—safety priorities.
- Writing a report that cannot be checked: Link conclusions to evidence references and disclose assumptions and limitations.
A practical completion check
Before presenting a reconstruction, verify that a reader can follow the reasoning without treating your interpretation as a raw fact:
- Are the investigation questions and scope clear?
- Can each material observation be traced to an evidence item and collection context?
- Are observations separated from interpretations and conclusions?
- Does the timeline identify its time standard, uncertainty, conflicts, and gaps?
- Have plausible alternative explanations been considered?
- Are affected systems and information described only to the extent supported?
- Are confidence, collection limitations, and unresolved questions explicit?
- Do recommendations identify the response or recovery decision they support?
- Were operational and safety constraints reflected where relevant?
A reconstruction that passes this check may still be incomplete. Its value is that decision-makers can see what is known, how it is known, what is not known, and what the organization should do with that uncertainty.
