Angel Reese is not an official, selectable character in Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball. Nintendo’s published game information documents Basketball, Mii/avatar use, and motion controls, but it does not list Reese as a licensed athlete, preset, or character. You can still play Basketball while using a player-created Mii inspired by her appearance, but that likeness is unofficial and does not give the avatar Reese-specific abilities or statistics.
What “use Angel Reese” means in this game
The title can describe two different requests:
- Play as an official Angel Reese character: Nintendo does not document one for Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball. There is no confirmed Reese roster slot, branded uniform, special move set, or Reese-specific rating to select.
- Create an avatar that resembles Angel Reese: You can use a Mii or another available avatar and adjust its appearance yourself. That is a player-created approximation, not a licensed inclusion and not an endorsement by Reese or Nintendo.
Those distinctions matter because the game’s documented Basketball systems apply to the mode generally. Nintendo does not publish a separate control scheme, animation set, or attribute package for Reese. Your avatar’s appearance should therefore be treated as cosmetic unless the game itself explicitly displays a gameplay effect; the published Nintendo material does not establish that a Mii’s height, hairstyle, face, or clothing changes Basketball performance.
Make sure Basketball is installed
Basketball was added to Nintendo Switch Sports in software version 1.5.0, released on July 9, 2024. Nintendo’s update information lists the mode for global play, local play, and play with friends. If Basketball is missing, update the game before looking for an avatar or match option.

Choose the Basketball mode that fits your goal
Nintendo describes two main Basketball formats and three ways to play them. Select the format first, then use the motion prompts shown by the game rather than relying on a button guide from another game.
| Option | What Nintendo documents | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Two-on-Two | Players work in teams and switch between offense and defense. Nintendo describes dribbling, shooting, blocking, stealing, and dunking. | Learning team movement, passing opportunities, defensive positioning, and quick changes of possession. |
| Three-point play | A long-distance shooting activity presented as a timed contest. Nintendo also describes a local multiplayer contest. | Practicing repeatable shot timing or competing with someone nearby for the higher score. |
| Play Globally | Basketball is included in Nintendo’s global-play listing. | Playing against people through the game’s online service when the required service and connection are available. |
| Play Locally | Basketball is included in Nintendo’s local-play listing. | Sharing a console and playing in the same location. |
| Play with Friends | Basketball is included in Nintendo’s play-with-friends listing. | Inviting or joining friends through the game’s supported online flow. |
For a Reese-inspired session, start with Two-on-Two if you want the feel of a complete game. Use Three-point play when you are mainly trying to make your shooting motion consistent. The avatar choice does not turn either mode into an Angel Reese-specific challenge.
Use the Joy-Con motion controls correctly
Nintendo presents Basketball as a Joy-Con motion-controlled activity. The published description covers the actions rather than providing a complete written button-and-timing chart. In practice, select an action and copy the movement shown in the on-screen demonstration.

Shooting
Use the shooting prompt as your timing reference. In Two-on-Two, wait for a clear opportunity instead of repeating a motion while a defender is directly in front of you. In Three-point play, concentrate on repeating the same starting position and release rhythm across attempts; the activity is designed around timed shooting, not around a Reese-specific shot animation.
Blocking and stealing
These defensive actions are part of Nintendo’s Two-on-Two description. Watch the opponent and respond to the defensive prompt shown by the game. Do not assume that choosing a taller-looking Mii creates a larger block or a stronger steal: Nintendo’s published information does not claim appearance-based ratings.
Dunking
Nintendo’s Basketball page includes dunking among the actions players can perform. The game will display the relevant motion when a dunk opportunity is available. Follow that prompt rather than attempting a movement copied from a different basketball game.

Nintendo says players can use a Mii character, and its official site also describes earning avatar items through online play. Those statements support customizing an avatar generally, but Nintendo does not publish a Reese preset or an official recipe for recreating her face, hair, body, or uniform.
Start with a Mii or available avatar
- Open the game’s avatar or player-selection area before entering a Basketball match.
- Select a Mii if that option is available on your console. If you use another avatar type, choose the closest neutral character and adjust the items the game makes available.
- Set a visual style that reminds you of Reese without presenting it as an official portrait. You might choose a similar hairstyle, complexion, facial proportions, or color palette, but the specific choices are your own approximation.
- Choose available sports clothing or accessories. Do not label an item as a Reese jersey or team uniform unless the game explicitly identifies it that way; the documented Nintendo information does not establish a licensed Reese outfit.
- Save the avatar, return to Basketball, and confirm that the selected character appears before starting the match.
Online play may unlock additional avatar items according to Nintendo’s game overview. Availability can depend on the game’s current item rotation and your account or connection status, so an item seen by another player may not be available to you immediately.
What the likeness can and cannot do
- It can: give your player a visual theme for screenshots, local matches, or online sessions.
- It cannot be assumed to: add Reese’s real-world statistics, height, position, signature moves, team affiliation, or special abilities.
- It should not be described as: an official Reese character, endorsement, partnership, or Nintendo-licensed likeness.
If another player asks whether you are using Angel Reese, the accurate answer is that you are using a player-created avatar inspired by her. That wording avoids confusing a visual tribute with content Nintendo has actually announced.

- Choose Basketball from the sports list.
- Select Two-on-Two.
- Choose the available play route: global, local, or with friends.
- Check the controller prompt for each participant. Nintendo cautions that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer, so follow the setup message displayed by your game instead of assuming one universal Joy-Con count.
- Complete the calibration or movement demonstration if the game requests one.
- On offense, use the displayed dribbling and shooting motions. Look for space before shooting and pay attention to possession changes.
- On defense, track the ball carrier and use the displayed block or steal motion at the appropriate moment.
- Attempt a dunk only when the game presents the dunk opportunity and shows the corresponding action.
- After the match, adjust your motion timing or avatar appearance separately. A missed shot is a gameplay issue, not evidence that the Mii needs a different face or body setting.
Nintendo summarizes the mode with the instruction, “Get past your opponent’s defence in Two-on-Two and jump high towards the basket.” That describes the game’s general objective; it is not a quote about Angel Reese or a promise of a Reese-themed move set.
Use Three-point play to practice shooting
Three-point play is the more focused choice when your goal is to improve release consistency. Nintendo describes it as a timed contest and also lists a local multiplayer version.
Solo practice approach
- Begin with the avatar you want to use, then select Three-point play.
- Watch the demonstration before your first attempt so you know the intended motion.
- Keep the controller grip and starting position consistent from shot to shot.
- Use the timer as a pacing constraint, but do not rush the motion so much that it becomes inconsistent.
- After the round, identify whether misses came from late timing, early timing, or an unregistered movement. Change one variable at a time.
Local contest approach
For a nearby competition, decide whether both players will use the same avatar style or their own. The contest compares performance in the activity; it does not compare real-world player statistics. Follow the local setup prompt for controllers and accessories because Nintendo does not state that every multiplayer arrangement uses the same number of Joy-Con controllers.

Online, local, and friend play requirements
Play Globally
Global play is intended for matches with players outside your immediate location. You need a working internet connection and any Nintendo Switch online access that the game requests. If matchmaking fails, return to the game’s network or play-mode screen and follow its displayed error instructions rather than repeatedly swinging the controller.

Play Locally
Local play is suitable when players are sharing the same console or nearby compatible systems, depending on the option presented. Have each participant connect the controller requested on-screen before starting. A second player may need an additional accessory; Nintendo’s general product information warns that multiplayer accessories can be required but does not establish one universal hardware setup.
Play with Friends
Use the friend-play option when you want a specific group rather than open matchmaking. Confirm that everyone has the same Basketball-capable game software and can see the invitation or room prompt. If one player cannot join, first check the update status and the controller or network message shown by that player’s console.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
Basketball does not appear
- Check that Nintendo Switch Sports has completed a software update and that version 1.5.0 or a later version is installed.
- Close and reopen the game after updating.
- Verify that you are looking in the sports-selection screen, not only in a particular online playlist.
The avatar does not look like the one you created
- Confirm that you saved the Mii or avatar before entering the match.
- Check whether the game separates a general profile avatar from the character selected for Basketball.
- Reopen the avatar editor and remove an item that may be hiding the facial or hair changes you made.
- Remember that a close resemblance is an approximation; Nintendo does not provide a Reese-specific preset.
The motion is not registering
- Read the on-screen action prompt again and copy its movement rather than using a remembered motion from another title.
- Make sure the Joy-Con is connected, charged, and held with the wrist strap attached.
- Move to a clear area and avoid gripping the controller so tightly that its movement is restricted.
- If only one action fails, practice that action in the mode that presents it most often, such as Three-point play for shooting.
A local multiplayer setup is blocked
- Follow the exact accessory prompt shown by the game for the number of players you selected.
- Reconnect or resync controllers before restarting the activity.
- Do not assume that a controller arrangement that worked for one mode will automatically work for another.
An online match will not start
- Check the console’s internet connection and the game’s displayed network status.
- Confirm that every participant has updated software.
- Try the friend or local route if global matchmaking is temporarily unavailable.
What you should not claim about Angel Reese in this game
Reliable wording is especially important when sharing a video, guide, or screenshot. Avoid saying that Nintendo added Reese, that she has a special dunk, or that her real-world statistics control the avatar. The published Nintendo information does not substantiate any of those claims.
Use language such as “my Angel Reese-inspired Mii” or “a player-created Reese-style avatar.” Do not use a screenshot of your custom character as proof of an official collaboration. If Nintendo later announces licensed athlete content, check the announcement and software version before changing the description.
A practical setup checklist
- Nintendo Switch Sports is updated to version 1.5.0 or later.
- Basketball is visible in the sports list.
- Your Mii or avatar is saved and selected.
- The Joy-Con is connected, charged, and fitted with its wrist strap.
- The play route—global, local, or friends—matches your intended session.
- All participants have followed the on-screen controller and accessory instructions.
- You are using the game’s current motion demonstration instead of an assumed button combination.
- You describe the character as player-created rather than official Angel Reese content.
Bottom line on using Angel Reese
You cannot select an official Angel Reese character in the documented Nintendo Switch Sports Basketball content. You can update the game, choose Basketball, and create a Mii or avatar that visually reminds you of her. Then play Two-on-Two or Three-point play using the standard Joy-Con motion prompts. The result is a fan-made visual likeness inside a general basketball mode—not a licensed Reese player with her real-world abilities or statistics.
