Yes—the Ryzen 5 4600G and GeForce RTX 3060 12GB are a technically compatible combination for 1080p gaming. Install the card in the motherboard’s primary PCIe x16 slot, connect its required PCIe power leads, plug the monitor into the card rather than the motherboard, install the current NVIDIA driver, and select 1920×1080 in Windows and your games. Start with a high preset and ray tracing disabled, then tune each title. There is no reliable universal FPS figure for this exact pairing because results depend on the game, graphics-card model, memory, motherboard, drivers and settings.

Will an RTX 3060 work with the Ryzen 5 4600G?

It will. AMD lists the Ryzen 5 4600G as a six-core, 12-thread processor with boost speeds up to 4.2 GHz, a 65 W TDP and PCIe Gen 3 support in its 2022 desktop-processor information. NVIDIA lists the RTX 3060 as a PCIe Gen 4 graphics card with 12 GB of GDDR6 memory and a 192-bit memory interface. A Gen 3 processor platform and a Gen 4 graphics card can communicate; the PCIe link operates at the highest generation supported by the platform and slot.

The processor and graphics card do not determine the exact slot wiring, firmware menus or clearance in your computer. Those details belong to the motherboard, case and particular RTX 3060 board. Read the motherboard manual before installation and use its primary graphics slot, normally the full-length PCIe x16 slot connected to the CPU.

This combination is appropriate for a 1920×1080 target. It does not guarantee a particular frame rate. Official specifications and support pages do not provide controlled tests of this exact CPU, GPU, game, memory configuration and settings combination, so an FPS promise would be misleading.

Specifications that matter before installation

Component or detail Documented specification How to use it
Ryzen 5 4600G 6 cores, 12 threads; boost up to 4.2 GHz; 65 W TDP; PCIe Gen 3 (AMD, 2022) Confirm that the motherboard BIOS supports the processor and that the graphics slot is the one specified in the manual.
RTX 3060 family 12 GB GDDR6; 192-bit memory interface; 170 W graphics-card power (NVIDIA) Allow for the card’s power draw and connect every power socket on the exact board.
NVIDIA reference system guidance 550 W recommended system power, based on a system with an Intel Core i9-10900K; NVIDIA notes a lower rating may work depending on configuration Treat 550 W as reference guidance, not a universal guarantee. Check your PSU’s quality, age and available native PCIe leads.
Example: MSI GeForce RTX 3060 GAMING 12G 550 W recommended PSU; one 8-pin plus one 6-pin connector; 276 × 131 × 51 mm; 12 GB GDDR6; 170 W (MSI) These dimensions and plugs apply to that MSI model only. Other board-partner cards can be different.

For the family-level figures, see NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3060 family specifications. The add-in-board example is documented on MSI’s GeForce RTX 3060 GAMING 12G specification page. Do not use the MSI dimensions or connector arrangement as a substitute for the label and manual of your own card.

Check the card, power supply and case first

Identify the exact RTX 3060 board

“RTX 3060 12GB” identifies the GPU class, not one universal physical product. Before opening the case, record the manufacturer and complete model name. Look up its length, height, slot thickness, required PCIe plugs and recommended system power. NVIDIA explicitly warns that partner-card specifications can vary.

  • Measure the unobstructed graphics-card length from the rear expansion slots toward the front of the case. Include front fans, drive cages and radiator space in the measurement.
  • Check whether the cooler occupies two slots, two-and-a-half slots or more, and make sure an adjacent expansion card will not block its intake.
  • Confirm that the PSU has the card’s required native PCIe leads. Do not assume every RTX 3060 uses the same connector combination.
  • Check the PSU label for total wattage, PCIe output and age. A nominal wattage alone does not prove that a damaged or unsuitable PSU is safe.

Use the power figures correctly

NVIDIA specifies 170 W of graphics-card power and gives a 550 W reference-system recommendation based on an Intel Core i9-10900K test configuration. NVIDIA also says a lower-rated supply can work depending on the complete system. That qualification matters: the 550 W number is not a measured requirement for every Ryzen 5 4600G computer, and a higher number does not fix poor cabling or a failing unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MSI GAMING 12G example calls for a 550 W supply and uses one 8-pin plus one 6-pin connector. If your card has two sockets, connect both with the PSU’s native PCIe cables. Never force a connector, use a CPU/EPS plug in a graphics-card socket, or leave one required socket empty.

Install the RTX 3060 in the correct slot

  1. Shut down the computer, switch the PSU off and unplug the AC cable. Press the case power button briefly to discharge residual power.
  2. Move the case to a stable, well-lit surface. Touch the metal chassis before handling the card, and hold the card by its edges; avoid touching the gold contacts or components.
  3. Open the motherboard manual and locate the primary full-length PCIe x16 graphics slot. If the board has several long slots, do not choose by appearance alone—the manual identifies the intended slot and any lane-sharing limitations.
  4. Remove the matching rear expansion-slot covers from the case. Keep their screws available.
  5. Release the slot’s retention latch, align the RTX 3060’s connector with the slot and press straight down until the latch engages. The rear bracket should sit flush with the case.
  6. Secure the bracket with the case screws. Support a long or heavy card while tightening so the slot is not carrying unnecessary leverage.
  7. Connect every PCIe power plug specified for that exact card. The plugs should be fully seated; a partially inserted connector can cause no-display or shutdown symptoms.
  8. Close the case, reconnect the AC cable and switch the PSU on.

The 4600G’s PCIe Gen 3 interface and the RTX 3060’s Gen 4 capability do not require an adapter or a special compatibility mode. The link negotiates to the platform’s supported generation. Because the motherboard model is not specified here, use its manual for any BIOS setting, slot preference or firmware prerequisite.

Connect the monitor to the graphics card

Plug the display cable into an output on the RTX 3060’s rear bracket, not into the video output on the motherboard. The motherboard connector is associated with the processor’s integrated graphics path; a system intended to render games on the discrete card should use the discrete card’s HDMI or DisplayPort output. Select the corresponding input on the monitor.

After the first boot, open Windows display settings and choose 1920 × 1080 when that is the monitor’s native or desired resolution. If the screen remains blank, turn the system off and recheck the seating, power plugs, monitor input and cable before changing firmware settings.

Install the NVIDIA driver and verify the device

  1. Start Windows with the monitor connected to the RTX 3060.
  2. Download the current GeForce driver for the installed Windows version and RTX 3060 from NVIDIA’s official support channel. Driver versions change, so use the current release rather than relying on an old installer.
  3. Run the installer and choose the normal recommended installation unless you have a specific reason to select a custom option.
  4. Restart when prompted.
  5. Open Device Manager and expand “Display adapters.” The RTX 3060 should appear without a warning icon. You can also open the NVIDIA control panel to confirm that the card and display are recognized.

NVIDIA describes Game Ready drivers as developed with game creators and tested across hardware configurations. That description explains why keeping the driver current is useful; it is not a guarantee that every new release improves every game on this processor.

Set up 1080p game settings

Start with a sensible baseline

In each game, set the output resolution to 1920×1080, choose the high preset and disable ray tracing initially. This gives you a repeatable starting point without claiming that every title will run at a particular frame rate. Play a representative scene, then change one setting at a time.

  • Use the game’s built-in frame-rate limiter when available, especially if an uncapped frame rate makes the system run hotter or causes uneven pacing.
  • Match the limit to what your monitor can display rather than chasing an arbitrary number.
  • If the game offers a render-scale control, leave it at 100% while establishing a baseline so that later changes are understandable.
  • Lower expensive effects such as shadows, volumetric lighting, reflections or crowd density individually if a title feels uneven. The best setting differs by game.

Ray tracing and DLSS

The RTX 3060 supports ray tracing, but ray-traced effects can impose a substantial workload. Keep them disabled while establishing your 1080p baseline; enable them only if the visual change is worth the performance trade-off in that particular game.

NVIDIA identifies DLSS as supported by the RTX 3060, but DLSS is implemented by individual games. When a title provides a DLSS option, test its Quality, Balanced or Performance modes at 1080p and inspect fine text, foliage and moving objects. If the game has no DLSS implementation, the setting will not appear and cannot be added through the driver.

Resizable BAR: useful option, not a requirement

Resizable BAR is optional. NVIDIA states that enabling it requires a compatible CPU, motherboard, system firmware (SBIOS), R465 or higher driver, and GPU firmware (VBIOS) support. The R465 wording belongs to NVIDIA’s historical support article; use the current driver and current motherboard instructions rather than treating that old number as a present-day recommendation.

Because the motherboard model is unknown, there is no universal BIOS menu path. The labels commonly involved are “Above 4G Decoding” and “Resizable BAR,” but the location and wording vary by manufacturer.

  1. Record the motherboard model and current BIOS version from the firmware screen or the board’s documentation.
  2. Check the motherboard maker’s current firmware notes for Resizable BAR support with the Ryzen 5 4600G.
  3. Confirm that the RTX 3060’s VBIOS and the installed NVIDIA driver meet the board maker’s requirements.
  4. Back up important files and read the firmware update procedure before changing anything. Do not interrupt a BIOS or VBIOS update.
  5. In firmware, enable “Above 4G Decoding” if the board’s instructions require it, then enable Resizable BAR. Save and reboot.
  6. Verify the feature in the NVIDIA control panel or the utility specified by the motherboard or card documentation.

If any prerequisite is uncertain, leave Resizable BAR disabled. The RTX 3060 and 4600G remain usable without it, and changing firmware settings is not a substitute for correct card installation or current drivers.

How to judge performance without a made-up FPS promise

There is no controlled benchmark in the available official material for this exact Ryzen 5 4600G and RTX 3060 12GB pairing. Avoid statements such as “it always reaches 60 FPS” or “the 4600G bottlenecks the 3060” unless they are tied to a specific, reproducible test that names the game, patch, settings, memory, driver, motherboard and card model.

For your own comparison, use the same game scene, resolution, preset, ray-tracing state, DLSS mode and frame-rate cap after every change. Note the driver version, Windows version, memory configuration, motherboard BIOS and exact RTX 3060 model. Results can change with game engines, background processes, thermals, firmware and memory settings, so a result from one title should not be generalized to all games.

Troubleshooting branches

No display after installing the card

  • Confirm the monitor cable is connected to the RTX 3060 and the monitor is set to that input.
  • Power down and reseat the card in the motherboard’s primary slot.
  • Check every required PCIe power connector and verify that the plug is a PCIe cable, not an EPS/CPU cable.
  • Test another known-good display cable or output on the card.
  • Consult the motherboard manual for its diagnostic LEDs or beep codes. Do not assume a BIOS setting is needed until the physical checks are complete.

Windows shows only integrated graphics or a warning icon

  • Shut down and reseat the card and its power leads.
  • Install the current NVIDIA driver for the installed operating system.
  • Check Device Manager for an error code and follow the motherboard’s slot and firmware guidance.
  • Make sure the monitor is still connected to the card after the driver installation; moving the cable to the motherboard can make the intended output path unclear.

Games crash or the computer shuts down under load

  • Recheck that the PSU meets the exact card’s recommendation and has secure native PCIe connections.
  • Restore graphics settings to the high-preset, ray-tracing-off baseline.
  • Update the NVIDIA driver and motherboard firmware only according to their official procedures.
  • Inspect the card and case for blocked airflow or a loose cable. If shutdowns persist, stop testing until the power supply and hardware are checked.

Performance feels inconsistent

  • Remove background workloads and keep the game settings, frame cap and resolution constant while comparing.
  • Record whether the issue occurs in one game or several; a single title may have its own patch or engine problem.
  • Check temperatures and clock behavior with a reputable monitoring utility, but do not use a monitoring result as proof of a universal CPU bottleneck.
  • Compare with and without DLSS or ray tracing using the same scene, rather than changing several options at once.

Choosing among RTX 3060 12GB board models

If you are buying the card rather than using one you already own, compare the exact add-in-board model on these points:

Decision point Why it matters What to verify
Length and height A card can be electrically compatible but physically impossible to install. Published dimensions versus the case’s measured clearance, including front fans and drive cages.
Slot thickness A thicker cooler can cover neighboring slots or interfere with another card. Number of occupied slots and spacing in the motherboard and case.
Power connectors The PSU must provide every required lead. Exact plug arrangement on the chosen model; not stated universally for all RTX 3060 cards.
Cooling and acoustics Cooler design affects temperatures and noise in your case. Independent reviews for the exact board, not assumptions based on the GPU name.
Warranty and price These are purchase and support considerations, not GPU specifications. Current regional terms and price for the exact listing; no universal figure is established here.

The MSI GAMING 12G specification—276 × 131 × 51 mm, one 8-pin plus one 6-pin connector and a 550 W recommendation—is a concrete example of why model-level checking matters. It does not establish that another RTX 3060 board uses the same cooler, dimensions or plugs.

A practical first-session checklist

  • Motherboard manual confirms the primary PCIe x16 slot and Ryzen 5 4600G support.
  • Case clearance exceeds the exact RTX 3060 card’s length, height and thickness.
  • PSU capacity and native PCIe connectors match the card maker’s instructions.
  • Card is fully seated and secured; every required power socket is connected.
  • Monitor is connected to the RTX 3060 output.
  • Current NVIDIA driver is installed for the operating system.
  • Windows and games are set to 1920×1080.
  • Initial test uses a high preset with ray tracing disabled.
  • DLSS is enabled only when the game supports it and the result looks acceptable.
  • Resizable BAR is treated as optional and changed only after checking CPU, motherboard, firmware, VBIOS and driver compatibility.

Bottom line

The Ryzen 5 4600G and RTX 3060 12GB make a workable 1080p gaming platform when the exact card, PSU, case and motherboard are checked first. The PCIe Gen 3/Gen 4 difference is not an incompatibility. Correct installation, a current driver, GPU-connected display cable and game-specific tuning matter more than chasing an unsupported universal FPS claim.
