If your “old Google Home” is a Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max, it can play YouTube TV directly on its built-in display. You need a YouTube TV account or trial account, and you can start playback by voice or on the screen. An audio-only Google Home speaker cannot show video; it can instead control YouTube TV playing on a linked Chromecast and TV, a setup Google documents as US-only.
Which Google device can play YouTube TV?
The key distinction is whether the device has a screen. Google supports direct YouTube TV playback on Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max smart displays. In that setup, the video appears on the display itself, making it a possible kitchen viewing screen. Google’s instructions require a YouTube TV account or trial account. Google’s Nest display instructions cover playback and controls.
A Google Home speaker without a display is not a video player. It can act as a voice controller for YouTube TV on a separate, linked Chromecast and connected television. In that configuration, the TV—not the speaker—shows the program.

Start YouTube TV on a Nest Hub
- Confirm you have a Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max with a working display. An audio-only Google Home speaker cannot perform this direct-playback setup.
- Make sure you can access a YouTube TV account or trial account. Google lists an account or trial account as a requirement for playback.
- Start the service by voice or on the display. Google’s example voice commands include “Watch YouTube TV,” “Open YouTube TV,” “Go to YouTube TV,” and “Show me the TV guide.” You can also use the touchscreen.
- Use the display’s playback controls. Google documents controls for pausing, changing channels, and adjusting volume.

Use a Google Home speaker to control YouTube TV on a television
If your Google Home device has no screen, pair the voice-control setup with a Chromecast and a TV. Google’s documented path uses the Google Home app to link Chromecast, and requires the YouTube TV service and Google device to use the same Google Account. Google states that this speaker-and-Chromecast feature is available only in the United States. Follow Google’s setup instructions for the linking steps.

This is a different arrangement from watching directly on a Nest Hub: the speaker accepts commands, while the television connected to Chromecast displays the video. Google describes YouTube TV as a service for live TV channels, shows, movies, and sports on supported devices; check availability for your region before relying on this setup. What to expect from the kitchen setup
A Nest Hub makes sense for this use when you already own a compatible display and want YouTube TV to appear on that screen. The documented feature establishes playback and basic controls, but it does not establish that a Nest Hub replaces a full-size television or guarantee a particular viewing experience in every kitchen. An audio-only Google Home speaker remains useful for voice control only when a separate compatible screen and streaming device provide the video.
