The most broadly supported way to cut an LG front-load washer’s electricity use is to wash in cold water, wait for a full load, and use the fastest fabric-safe spin speed. If your exact model offers LG COLDWASH™, select the cycle first, press ColdWash, choose any permitted modifiers, and press Start/Pause. Controls and eligible cycles vary by model and market, so confirm the sequence in your owner’s manual before relying on a button name from another LG washer.

Why cold washing saves the most energy

ENERGY STAR says water heating accounts for about 90% of the energy used to operate a clothes washer. That is why lowering the wash temperature usually has a larger effect than changing minor cycle preferences. Its consumer guidance recommends cold washing because cold water generally cleans well, while specifically noting oily stains as an exception that may need a different approach.

Cold water is not a universal instruction for every load. Read the garment-care labels, consider the soil type, and use the temperature and cycle that suit the laundry. A cold setting can reduce water-heating demand, but it does not make an unsuitable cycle appropriate for a delicate fabric, a heavily soiled item, or a stain that responds better to warmer water.

First, identify the controls on your exact LG washer

LG changes cycle names, option buttons, display menus, and temperature choices between models and markets. A feature shown in a manual for one product family may not exist on another front-loader, and a setting may be available only on selected cycles. Use the model number on the washer’s rating label to open the matching owner’s manual, then check the cycle and option tables rather than assuming that every LG machine has a dedicated ColdWash control.

  • Temperature-only control: Other models may offer a temperature modifier such as Cold, Tap Cold, or a similar label without a separate ColdWash button.
  • Cycle-dependent availability: The temperature range, spin choices, and other modifiers can change when you select a different cycle.
  • Market differences: A control shown in LG documentation for one country or product variant is not proof that an identically named washer sold elsewhere has the same feature.

Keep the manual open while setting the first few loads. It tells you which combinations the washer accepts and prevents a common mistake: trying to reproduce a control sequence from a different LG model.

How to use COLDWASH™ on a compatible LG front-loader

The following procedure follows the WM8000 owner’s manual. Treat it as a model-specific example, not a universal LG interface.

  1. Turn on the washer. Press the power control and wait for the cycle selector or display to become active.
  2. Choose the wash cycle. Select the cycle that matches the load’s fabric and soil. ColdWash is an option layered onto an eligible cycle; it is not a replacement for choosing the correct base cycle.
  3. Press ColdWash. On the WM8000, selecting the option automatically adjusts cycle settings for cold-water operation.
  4. Set other permitted options. Choose temperature, spin speed, soil level, or other modifiers only if the selected cycle allows them. The manual’s display or option indicators show what the washer accepts.
  5. Press Start/Pause. The machine begins the adjusted program. If the washer refuses an option, return to the manual’s cycle table instead of forcing a combination it does not support.

LG’s WM8000 manual says the COLDWASH™ option reduces energy use while providing the same washing performance as a warm-water wash. That statement applies to the model family covered by that manual; it is not independent testing of every LG front-loader, detergent, stain, or load.

WM8000 timing and load guidance

On the WM8000, ColdWash can add up to 10 minutes to the program. The same manual recommends keeping the load below 8 pounds for high wash efficiency when using the option. Both figures belong to that manual and should not be presented as specifications for every LG washer.

How to choose cold water when there is no ColdWash button

If your washer lacks a dedicated ColdWash control, select a suitable cold temperature with the washer’s temperature modifier, provided that the chosen cycle permits it. The exact label might be Cold, Tap Cold, or another model-specific term. Select the cycle first, because the available temperatures and modifiers can change after the cycle is selected.

What Tap Cold means

LG’s guidance for its U.S. machines describes Tap Cold as water supplied directly from the household tap. The washer cannot regulate that incoming temperature. Plumbing conditions, the distance from the water heater, and the amount of water sitting in the pipes can therefore affect the temperature that actually enters the drum.

MRS. MEYER'S CLEAN DAY Laundry Detergent, Rain Water Scent, 64 Ounce Bottle

  • Contains cleaning agents with dirt, stain-fighting enzymes, and other thoughtfully chosen ingredients

A display that says cold is not a promise of one fixed temperature in every home. If the first water from a long pipe run is warmer or cooler than expected, that reflects the incoming supply rather than a guaranteed washer-controlled temperature. The energy benefit still comes from avoiding deliberate water heating, but the exact water temperature remains household-dependent.

Build an energy-saving load without damaging clothes

Wait for a full, suitable load

ENERGY STAR recommends washing full loads. Running a nearly empty drum uses a complete wash cycle for fewer garments, while repeatedly overloading the washer can prevent proper movement and rinsing. “Full” means a load that fits the washer’s instructions and leaves the fabrics able to tumble or circulate; it does not mean packing the drum tightly.

Group items that share compatible care labels and soil levels. A full load of similar fabrics lets you choose one temperature, cycle, and spin speed without sacrificing a garment that needs gentler treatment. When a small item is urgent, the energy trade-off may be unavoidable; do not add unsuitable garments merely to make the drum look fuller.

Use the highest fabric-safe spin speed

LG explains that a higher spin speed extracts more water from the load and can reduce the time and energy required by a dryer. Select the fastest speed allowed by the care labels and by the cycle. Delicates, woolens, loosely constructed items, and garments with specific instructions may require a slower spin.

Spin speed changes moisture removal, not wash temperature. It is therefore a separate choice: use cold water when the load allows it, then select a safe spin speed to reduce the water that must be removed later. If the washer disables a high-spin choice for a cycle, follow that restriction rather than switching to an unsuitable program.

Air-dry when practical

Air-drying avoids the dryer’s energy use altogether. Hang or lay items according to their care labels, and use a dryer only when the fabric, weather, space, or time makes air-drying impractical. The washer’s higher-spin option can make air-drying faster as well as reduce dryer runtime.

Choose the setting by load type, not by the energy label alone

Load question Energy-saving choice When to choose something else
Can the fabric and soil be washed cold? Use ColdWash or a permitted cold temperature. Follow the care label or a suitable warmer setting when the item or soil requires it.
Is the drum ready for a normal-size load? Wait and combine compatible items into a full load. Run a smaller load when an item is needed sooner or when combining it would violate care-label or color requirements.
Can the garments tolerate strong extraction? Select a higher permitted spin speed to remove more water. Use a lower speed for fabrics whose labels or cycle instructions require gentler extraction.
Is the stain oily? Do not assume cold water is sufficient just because it saves energy. Use the care label, pretreatment instructions, and a cycle-temperature combination appropriate to the stain.
Does the selected cycle offer the desired modifier? Use the option shown as available for that cycle. Choose a different suitable cycle only if it still matches the fabric and soil; never force a disabled combination.

The table is a decision aid, not a promise that every LG model exposes the same choices. Your washer’s manual controls which combinations are actually available.

What the main energy-saving controls do—and do not do

ColdWash

On a compatible LG model, ColdWash is a cycle option intended to reduce energy use by operating with cold water. The WM8000 manual says it automatically adjusts settings, can add up to 10 minutes, and is most efficient with a load under 8 pounds. Those operating details are model-specific.

Cold or Tap Cold temperature

A cold temperature selection tells the washer not to heat the wash water deliberately, subject to the model’s controls. Tap Cold uses the household supply directly, so the incoming temperature is outside the washer’s control. A temperature option may be unavailable on some cycles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spin speed

Spin speed determines how much water remains before drying. A faster, permitted spin can shorten dryer operation, but it does not replace choosing an appropriate wash cycle or temperature.

Full-load practice

Waiting for a full load reduces the number of cycles needed for a given amount of laundry. Full-load guidance must still be balanced against the washer’s capacity and the care-label requirements of the individual garments.

How to compare LG models or settings fairly

There is no meaningful universal menu comparison because LG changes controls by model and market. If you are reading a product page or comparing two manuals, use the same questions for each exact model:

Comparison point What to verify Why it matters
Cold-wash control Does the manual list a dedicated ColdWash option, or only temperature modifiers? A dedicated option may automatically adjust settings; a temperature-only machine requires you to select compatible choices yourself.
Eligible cycles Which cycles allow cold temperature, ColdWash, and the desired spin speed? Options are often cycle-dependent, so a feature listed on the panel may not be available for every load.
Timing trade-off Does the manual document additional time? The WM8000 manual documents up to 10 extra minutes; do not transfer that figure to another model.
Load guidance Does the manual specify a load limit for high efficiency with the option? The WM8000 guidance says under 8 pounds; another model may state something different or not state a figure.
Water-temperature behavior Is the setting controlled by the washer or supplied directly from the tap? Tap temperature depends on household plumbing and is not fixed by the appliance.
Spin choices What is the highest speed allowed for the cycles you actually use? More extraction can reduce drying energy, but only when the fabrics permit it.

Do not compare a feature list from one country with a washer sold in another country without checking the exact regional model number and manual.

Troubleshooting common setting problems

The ColdWash button is missing

First, verify the model number and open its manual. The washer may use a temperature modifier instead of a dedicated ColdWash control, or the feature may not be included in that market or product variant. Select a permitted cold temperature if the manual lists one; do not assume that a similarly named LG model has identical controls.

ColdWash or a cold temperature is unavailable

Check the selected cycle. LG documentation states that temperature and other modifiers depend on the cycle, so an unavailable option may be an intentional restriction. Choose a cycle appropriate for the fabric and soil, then review which cold choices it permits.

The program takes longer after selecting ColdWash

For the WM8000, up to 10 additional minutes is documented behavior. Allow that model-specific adjustment to finish rather than cancelling the cycle simply because the estimated time changed. For another model, consult its manual for the expected timing.

Clothes come out wetter than expected

If the fabric-care labels allow it, select a higher spin speed on the next load. LG says faster spinning extracts more water and may reduce dryer time. If a garment requires a slower spin, keep the gentler setting and allow for longer air-drying or dryer operation.

Tap Cold does not feel equally cold every time

Tap Cold draws directly from the household supply. Water temperature can vary with plumbing layout and the distance from the water heater, so the washer cannot guarantee a single incoming temperature. This behavior is different from a machine actively heating water to a selected warm setting.

An oily stain remains after a cold wash

ENERGY STAR specifically identifies oily stains as an exception to its general cold-wash advice. Recheck the garment label and use a stain-treatment and temperature approach suitable for that fabric and soil. Do not repeat the same cold cycle on the assumption that cold is always the most effective choice.

A practical routine for lower-energy laundry

  1. Read the labels. Separate items by fabric, color, soil, and required temperature or spin treatment.
  2. Check the manual. Confirm whether the exact LG model has ColdWash, which cycles accept it, and which temperature and spin options are available.
  3. Fill the drum appropriately. Wait for a full load of compatible items without packing the drum beyond the washer’s guidance.
  4. Select the base cycle. Match it to the load rather than choosing a cycle solely because it offers more modifiers.
  5. Choose cold operation. Press ColdWash on a compatible model, or select a permitted cold temperature on a model without that option.
  6. Set a fabric-safe spin. Use a higher permitted speed when it will not harm the garments.
  7. Start the washer. On the WM8000 procedure, press Start/Pause after selecting the cycle and options.
  8. Reduce drying demand. Air-dry where practical, or use the dryer for less time when the higher spin has removed more water.

Does cold water require special detergent?

No detergent requirement is established by the cited LG and ENERGY STAR guidance. A detergent formulated or labeled for cold-water use may be a practical optional aid, but cold washing does not by itself prove that a particular product is necessary, and no specific detergent brand is supported here. Follow the detergent maker’s directions and the washer manual’s dosing guidance.

What to remember

  • Start with the manual for the exact LG model and market.
  • Cold water is the main broadly supported energy-saving choice because water heating represents about 90% of washer operating energy, according to ENERGY STAR.
  • Cold washing is not automatically right for oily stains, every fabric, or every soil level.
  • On the WM8000, the documented sequence is cycle, ColdWash, permitted options, then Start/Pause; the option can add up to 10 minutes and the manual recommends a load under 8 pounds for high wash efficiency.
  • Full loads, fabric-safe higher spins, and air-drying can reduce the energy needed after washing.
