You can use an iPad Pro as the computer at your desk: connect a monitor through its USB-C port, then add a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad. The exact cable, adapter, resolution, refresh rate, and Thunderbolt support depend on your iPad Pro generation and the monitor’s inputs.
This setup displays iPad content on the monitor. It is not the same as Sidecar, which uses an iPad as a second display for a Mac.
What you need for an iPad Pro desk setup
The iPad Pro sends video through its USB-C port. The monitor can receive that signal directly over USB-C or Thunderbolt, or through a USB-C video adapter connected to HDMI or VGA. The keyboard and pointing device are separate connections: pair Bluetooth accessories in iPadOS, or connect a USB keyboard through the iPad’s port or a compatible hub.

- Your exact iPad Pro generation.
- The monitor’s available video inputs: USB-C/DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, HDMI, or VGA.
- The resolution and refresh rate you want, plus whether you need charging and extra USB ports at the desk.
A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output at a particular resolution. The cable, adapter, monitor, and iPad model must all support the required bandwidth.

Check iPad Pro display compatibility first
Apple publishes model-specific maximums. These are limits for supported combinations, not a promise that every cable and monitor will reach the maximum.
| iPad Pro models | USB-C DisplayPort output listed by Apple | Thunderbolt display support |
|---|---|---|
| 11-inch (1st and 2nd generation) and 12.9-inch (3rd and 4th generation) | Up to 5K | Not listed as supported for these models |
| 11-inch (3rd and 4th generation) and 12.9-inch (5th and 6th generation) | Up to 6K | Supported |
| iPad Pro with M4 or M5 | Up to 6K | Supported |
Apple’s current USB-C guidance, published March 17, 2026, lists these capabilities by model. A monitor may still run below its native resolution or refresh rate if the cable, adapter, dock, or monitor input has a lower limit.
Identify your iPad Pro model
Open Settings, choose General, then About, and note the model name and generation shown there. If the model is identified only by a model number, use Apple’s model-identification information before selecting a Thunderbolt display or high-resolution cable.
Inspect the monitor’s inputs
- USB-C video: Use a USB-C cable that supports video and the monitor’s required bandwidth. Some USB-C monitor ports also charge the iPad; confirm the monitor’s power-delivery specification.
- Thunderbolt: Use a Thunderbolt-compatible iPad Pro model and a suitable Thunderbolt cable or display. A regular charging cable should not be assumed to provide Thunderbolt or high-resolution video.
- HDMI: Use a USB-C digital AV adapter, then connect a matching HDMI cable.
- VGA: Use a USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter and a VGA cable. VGA is an older analog connection and does not provide the same image capabilities as modern digital inputs.
Connect the external display
- Match the connection method. For a monitor with USB-C video, connect the monitor’s video-capable USB-C port to the iPad Pro with a compatible high-bandwidth USB-C cable. For HDMI, connect a USB-C Digital AV Adapter to the iPad, then attach the HDMI cable to the adapter and monitor. For VGA, use a USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter and the VGA cable.
- Turn on the monitor and select the correct input. Use the monitor’s input control to choose USB-C, Thunderbolt, HDMI, or VGA, depending on the connection.
- Wait for the iPad image. The external display may mirror the iPad or present an app-specific or extended workspace experience, depending on the iPad model, iPadOS version, and app.
- Reconnect if the display stays blank. Disconnect and reconnect the cable at both ends. If there is still no picture, turn the monitor off and on, then verify the input selection again.
Use the right cable for high resolution
Apple recommends a cable that supports high-bandwidth connections for high-resolution displays. The cable supplied with a display may be suitable, and a Thunderbolt cable is an option when both the iPad Pro and display support Thunderbolt. Do not infer video capability from the fact that a cable charges the iPad; check its video, DisplayPort, or Thunderbolt specifications.
Using an HDMI adapter
Apple says its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter displays the iPad Home Screen and apps over HDMI at 1080p and 60 Hz. When video content starts, the output can switch to match the content, up to 4K at 60 Hz when Match Content is enabled. Apple also states that HDMI 2.0 adapters can output 4K at 60 Hz on iPad Pro. The adapter, app, monitor, and cable all affect the final result, so an adapter labeled only for a lower HDMI standard may limit resolution or refresh rate.
Pair a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad
Bluetooth mouse and trackpad support requires iPadOS 13.4 or later. Apple lists all iPad Pro models as supported.

- Put the mouse or trackpad into pairing or discovery mode. Follow the accessory’s instructions if it has a pairing button or a dedicated switch.
- On the iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Leave Bluetooth enabled and select the accessory under Other Devices.
- Complete any pairing prompt. Once connected, move the pointer on the monitor or iPad screen to confirm that the accessory responds.
iPadOS displays a circular pointer. Pointer controls include tracking speed, scrolling behavior, and secondary-click behavior. Adjust those settings in the mouse or trackpad controls if the pointer feels too slow, scrolling runs in the wrong direction, or right-click actions are inconvenient.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Important limitation for older Apple pointing accessories
Apple notes that the first-generation Magic Mouse and first-generation Magic Trackpad do not support scrolling or other gestures in iPadOS. The pointer can connect, but the missing gestures are an iPadOS compatibility limitation rather than a monitor problem.
Connect the keyboard
Bluetooth keyboard
- Put the keyboard into pairing mode.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth on the iPad Pro.
- Select the keyboard when it appears under Other Devices.
- Type the pairing code shown by iPadOS, if prompted, and press Return.
A Bluetooth keyboard leaves the USB-C port available for the display, charger, or another accessory. Its layout and shortcut behavior depend on the keyboard’s language and hardware configuration.
USB keyboard
Connect a USB keyboard directly to the iPad Pro’s USB-C port, or connect it through a compatible USB-C hub or dock. A hub is useful when the display, keyboard, charging cable, and other peripherals must be connected at the same time. Verify the hub’s exact video output, USB data support, and power behavior; third-party hub features are not interchangeable.
Choose a connection layout for your desk
| Your monitor and accessory needs | Practical connection | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| USB-C monitor, keyboard and mouse are Bluetooth | One USB-C video cable from iPad Pro to monitor | Video bandwidth, monitor power delivery, and the iPad model’s resolution limit |
| HDMI monitor, Bluetooth keyboard and mouse | USB-C Digital AV Adapter plus HDMI cable | Adapter HDMI version, target resolution and refresh rate, and cable capability |
| Monitor plus wired keyboard or several USB devices | USB-C hub or dock with video and USB ports | Exact video output, USB data support, charging pass-through, and heat or power limits |
| Thunderbolt display | Thunderbolt cable to a supported iPad Pro model | Whether the iPad Pro generation is listed for Thunderbolt display support |
| Older VGA monitor | USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter plus VGA cable | Expected image quality, adapter support, and whether the monitor’s input is selected |
For a simple setup, minimize conversion steps: direct USB-C video is preferable when the monitor supports it. An adapter is necessary when the monitor has only HDMI or VGA. A hub or dock is optional rather than required, and its specification sheet determines whether it can carry the display signal while charging the iPad and running USB accessories.

Direct connection versus a hub
A direct cable is easiest to diagnose because there are fewer components between the iPad and the monitor. It also leaves you with the iPad’s single USB-C port occupied, so Bluetooth input devices are convenient in this layout. A hub or dock makes more sense when you need a USB keyboard, wired storage or another USB accessory at the same time, or when you want one connection carrying display, charging and peripherals.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Do not buy a hub based only on its port count. Check whether its video port is DisplayPort, HDMI or VGA, the maximum resolution and refresh rate it advertises, whether USB ports carry data rather than power only, and whether charging pass-through is supported. The iPad, hub, monitor and cables still have to agree on a usable mode. If a hub causes a blank screen, remove it and test the iPad directly before assuming the monitor is incompatible.
Understand what appears on the monitor
Apple describes three possible external-display behaviors:
- Mirroring: The monitor shows the iPad’s screen.
- App-specific second-screen output: An app can use the monitor for a separate presentation or viewing experience.
- Extended workspace: Supported iPad Pro models and iPadOS versions can provide a larger workspace instead of duplicating the iPad screen.
Do not assume that every iPad Pro generation provides the same desktop-like extended display. The result depends on the exact model, current iPadOS support, and the app. A monitor connection by itself does not turn iPadOS into macOS, and an app may choose to mirror, use the monitor as a second screen, or ignore the external display.
Resolution and refresh-rate expectations
The 5K and 6K figures in Apple’s model list are maximum supported output levels. They do not override a monitor’s own limit or an adapter’s limit. A 6K monitor connected through an adapter that supports only 4K will not receive a 6K signal. Similarly, a high-resolution monitor may fall back to a lower refresh rate if the cable or adapter cannot carry the required bandwidth.
Charging while the monitor is connected
Some USB-C monitors provide power through the same cable used for video, while others provide video only. Check the monitor’s power-delivery specification before treating it as the charger. With an HDMI or VGA adapter, or with a hub, verify that the adapter or dock has charging pass-through and that its power behavior matches your iPad Pro. A display connection can work correctly even when it does not charge the iPad, so confirm both functions separately.
Troubleshoot common failures
No picture or “no signal”
- Confirm that the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by the iPad.
- Unplug and reconnect the video cable at the iPad, adapter, and monitor.
- Power cycle the monitor after reconnecting.
- Remove unnecessary adapters or hubs and test a direct USB-C connection when possible.
- Check that the cable supports video and the required bandwidth, not just charging.
- For HDMI or VGA, verify that the adapter supports the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.
If the monitor has several USB-C, HDMI or DisplayPort-like sockets, use the one identified in its manual as the video input; a USB-C socket used only for service or charging will not accept a picture. If the image appears briefly and disappears, reconnect every component firmly and test the display at a lower supported mode by removing the adapter or dock that may be imposing the limit.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The image is lower resolution or refresh rate than expected
- Compare the iPad Pro generation with Apple’s 5K, 6K, and Thunderbolt support list.
- Check the cable’s DisplayPort or Thunderbolt bandwidth.
- Check the adapter’s HDMI specification; Apple identifies HDMI 2.0 as capable of 4K at 60 Hz on iPad Pro.
- Test the monitor’s other input if it offers both USB-C and HDMI, because the ports may have different limits.
The mouse or trackpad will not pair
- Charge or power on the accessory.
- Put it back into discovery mode.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and select it under Other Devices.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth accessories and try again. Apple warns that multiple active Bluetooth devices can make wireless interference more likely.
Pair the pointing device close to the iPad, then move it on the external display. If it connects but behaves inconsistently, temporarily disconnect other active Bluetooth devices so you can distinguish interference from an accessory fault.
The software keyboard disappeared
iPadOS may hide the on-screen keyboard when a physical keyboard, mouse, or trackpad is connected. Tap the keyboard button in the lower-right corner to show the software keyboard again.
The pointer moves but gestures or scrolling do not work
Check whether the accessory is a first-generation Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, which Apple says do not support scrolling or other gestures in iPadOS. For other devices, review pointer speed, scrolling, and secondary-click settings.
iPad Pro display mode versus Sidecar
These are opposite connection directions:
| Goal | What acts as the computer | What the display shows |
|---|---|---|
| Use iPad Pro with an external monitor | iPad Pro | iPadOS content on the monitor |
| Use Sidecar | Mac | The iPad acts as a mirrored or extended display for the Mac |
If you want Mac apps on the iPad, use Sidecar instructions. If you want iPad apps and iPadOS content on a larger monitor, connect the monitor to the iPad Pro as described here.

Will an HDMI connection always provide 4K at 60 Hz?
No. Apple says HDMI 2.0 adapters can output 4K at 60 Hz on iPad Pro, but the adapter, HDMI cable, monitor, app and content all affect the result. Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter shows the Home Screen and apps at 1080p and 60 Hz, with video content able to switch up to 4K at 60 Hz when Match Content is enabled.
Do I need a USB-C hub?
No. A hub is optional. Use a direct USB-C display connection when the monitor accepts USB-C video and your keyboard and mouse are Bluetooth. Choose a hub or dock when you need USB peripherals, charging pass-through or several connections, and verify its video, USB-data and power specifications.
Can I connect an older VGA monitor?
Yes. Use a USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter and a VGA cable, then select the monitor’s VGA input. VGA is an older analog connection, so it does not provide the same image capabilities as modern digital inputs.

Check that the monitor is on and set to the correct USB-C, Thunderbolt, HDMI or VGA input. Reconnect the cable at every connection, power cycle the monitor, and test without a hub or extra adapter. Then confirm that the cable and adapter support video and the monitor’s expected resolution.
Can the iPad Pro use an extended desktop on the monitor?
Sometimes. Apple supports mirroring, app-specific second-screen output and an extended workspace, but the available behavior depends on the iPad Pro model, iPadOS version and app. A monitor connection does not guarantee the same desktop-like workspace on every generation.
Why will my Bluetooth mouse not pair?
Put it in discovery mode, open Settings > Bluetooth and select it under Other Devices. Make sure it is powered, then disconnect unused Bluetooth accessories if interference is possible. Bluetooth mouse and trackpad support requires iPadOS 13.4 or later.
How do I show the on-screen keyboard after connecting a physical one?
iPadOS can hide the software keyboard when a keyboard, mouse or trackpad is connected. Tap the keyboard button in the lower-right corner to display it again.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does my first-generation Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad not scroll?
Apple says those first-generation accessories can connect but do not support scrolling or other gestures in iPadOS. This is an accessory compatibility limitation, not a monitor or cable problem.
The Bottom Line
Start by matching your iPad Pro generation and the monitor’s input. Use direct, high-bandwidth USB-C or Thunderbolt video when possible; use the appropriate USB-C HDMI or VGA adapter for older inputs. Pair the keyboard and Bluetooth mouse or trackpad separately, and treat hubs, charging and extended-display behavior as model-specific features to verify.
