An HDMI dongle can mean either a streaming device that plugs into your TV or a video adapter that connects a phone, tablet, or computer to an HDMI display. The setup depends on which kind you have: a streaming dongle needs power and often an app and Wi-Fi, while a video adapter needs a source device that supports video output through its port.
First, identify which kind of HDMI dongle you have
- Streaming dongle: Plugs into the TV’s HDMI input and runs streaming apps or receives content over a network. Chromecast is one example.
- Video adapter: Connects a compatible phone, tablet, or computer to an HDMI display, usually through a separate HDMI cable. This can mirror or extend a source device’s display, depending on the device and adapter.
These are different connection methods. Casting from a supported app to a streaming device is not the same as sending video directly from a phone or computer through an adapter.
How do I use an HDMI dongle to stream on a TV?
For Chromecast, Google’s setup instructions call for an open HDMI port, the device’s USB power connection, and the TV set to the matching input. Follow the instructions for your exact model; Chromecast Ultra, specifically, must use its included power supply. Google’s Chromecast connection instructions

- Plug the streaming dongle into an open HDMI input on the TV.
- Connect its power cable and supply as directed for that model. Plug the supply into power if required; do not assume the TV’s USB port provides adequate power.
- Use the TV remote’s Input or Source button to select the HDMI input where the dongle is connected. If the dongle’s home screen appears, the TV connection is working.
- Complete the on-screen setup. For Google streaming devices, Google specifies using the Google Home app on a compatible mobile device; computer setup is unsupported. Check the applicable device requirements before proceeding. Google’s streaming-device requirements
Check display and network requirements for Google 4K streaming
For Google streaming devices, the requirements vary by device and content. Google specifies an HDCP 2.2 display, a 4K-capable screen, and an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for 4K content. How do I connect a phone, tablet, or computer with an HDMI adapter?
A wired adapter works only if the source device supports video output through the port you plan to use. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output, so check the specifications for the exact phone, tablet, or computer before choosing an adapter. - Confirm that the source device supports video output through its port and that the adapter supports that model.
- Connect the adapter to the source device.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to an HDMI input on the TV, monitor, or projector. Apple’s adapter documentation says the HDMI cable is sold separately. Apple’s product information
- Select that HDMI input on the display. For configurations covered by Apple’s support page, video should appear within 10 seconds. Apple Support
Whether the image is mirrored or extended, and which resolution and refresh rate are available, depend on the particular source device, adapter, and display. Apple lists device-specific output modes for its adapter; do not assume the highest listed mode applies to every compatible device. Apple’s supported configurations

Which connection should you use?

Neither method is universally better. Choose based on whether you want to stream through apps or connect a particular source device directly, then verify compatibility for that device and display.

What to check when there is no picture or the setup fails
- Wrong input: Use the TV or display’s Input or Source control to select the HDMI port in use.
- Power issue: Check that the streaming dongle and any adapter requiring external power are powered according to their instructions. For Chromecast Ultra, use the included power supply. Google’s instructions
- Loose connection: Reseat the dongle or adapter, HDMI cable, and source-device connection. For Apple’s adapter, Apple advises unplugging it, checking that the cables are connected correctly, and reconnecting it. Apple Support
- Unsupported source port: Verify that the specific phone, tablet, or computer can output video through that port. A port’s shape does not establish its video capabilities.
- Setup or playback requirements: For Google streaming devices, check the current setup-app, display, and network requirements for your model and intended content. Google’s requirements
- Cast option missing: Casting requires a Google Cast-enabled app. Open a supported app and use its Cast button to start playback. Google Cast instructions
