An ESP32 can use an MLX90640 thermal array to flag warm shapes or movement in a garden, but the sensor does not produce a detailed photograph or prove that an animal is present. Treat this as a heat-triggered alert project—not a tested wildlife-identification system. The sources available describe thermal capture and display projects, not validated outdoor detection accuracy, false-alarm rates, or range.

What the ESP32 thermal camera can—and cannot—detect

The MLX90640 is a thermal sensor that measures a scene as a 32×24 grid, or 768 temperature pixels, and sends the readings to a controller over I2C. An ESP32 can read those frames, compare pixels with a background or threshold, and trigger an alert when the readings change. The sensor and example projects establish a practical starting point for capturing and rendering heat data; a garden-specific detection algorithm still needs to be designed and tested. Adafruit’s MLX90640 product information describes the array, while an ESP32 thermal-camera project demonstrates capture and display.

A 32×24 thermal frame can suggest that something warm is moving through the view, but it is not a conventional detailed photo. The cited sources do not establish that this resolution can identify an animal or distinguish species. Plan to treat a trigger as a possible intrusion that may need confirmation, not as proof of what entered the garden.

Choose a field of view for the area you want to watch

The cited MLX90640 module document lists versions with 55°×35° and 110°×75° fields of view. A narrower view covers less ground but gives the sensor’s pixels a more concentrated view of a given object; a wider view includes more of the scene but spreads those pixels across it. The source does not provide a tested garden detection distance for either option. SparkFun’s module documentation lists the field-of-view options.

Module view Practical consideration What the sources establish
55°×35° Consider it when you want to watch a narrower path or zone. The module document lists this field of view; it does not state a validated detection range.
110°×75° Consider it when you want to include a wider nearby area. The module document lists this field of view; it does not state a validated detection range.

Neither option is universally best. The useful choice depends on the garden layout, mounting position, target size, and how many pixels the target occupies in the actual view. Set the camera up at its intended position and record what the thermal frame looks like before settling on a trigger rule.

Build the heat-triggered alert path

  1. Connect the thermal array. Use an MLX90640 module that is compatible with the ESP32 board and connect it over I2C. Check the module and board documentation for their electrical requirements; the sources do not establish compatibility for every board-and-module combination.
  2. Read and inspect thermal frames. Start from an ESP32 capture example such as mjaniszew’s project. Its README reports a project-specific refresh of up to 4 frames per second; that is not a general performance guarantee for every sensor, board, or complete build.
  3. Choose a trigger rule. One possible implementation is to compare pixel temperatures with a background estimate or a selected threshold, then trigger when a relevant area changes. This is an implementation approach, not a validated garden algorithm. Expect to adjust it for the actual scene and log triggers so you can identify false alarms.
  4. Add an output. The ESP32 can use a trigger to initiate a notification or another response. Choose that response based on the build; the cited projects demonstrate thermal capture and rendering rather than a particular garden-alert service.
  5. Calibrate in place. Mount the sensor in its intended position, observe the background at different times, and record both real movement and unwanted triggers. Calibration, stable placement, and false-trigger logging are prudent engineering steps; the cited sources do not report results from garden trials.

Set realistic expectations for refresh rate

Update speed depends on the complete implementation. The mjaniszew project README reports up to 4 frames per second for that project, while Adafruit’s documented MLX90640 example sets a 2 Hz refresh rate and notes that higher refresh settings can cause read retries with some combinations. These figures describe different project or example configurations, not a guaranteed garden-camera rate.

A higher frame rate does not by itself establish better detection. The sensor, board, wiring, code, and alert logic all affect the result. Verify that the actual installation reads frames consistently before relying on it to trigger an alert.

Keep thermal sensing separate from visible-light photos

A thermal array measures heat; it does not take ordinary visible-light pictures. If you also want a conventional image for context, that requires a separate visible-light camera sensor and a separate capture path. Espressif’s esp32-camera driver supports image sensors on ESP32, ESP32-S2, and ESP32-S3, subject to board, sensor, and memory requirements.

Adding a visible camera can increase memory and performance demands. Espressif cautions that RGB/YUV processing can strain the chip, particularly when Wi-Fi is also in use, and notes that PSRAM requirements matter for image capture. A thermal-only alert is a simpler project scope; treat visible images as an optional addition and follow the driver’s requirements for the specific board and frame format.

What to verify before relying on it outdoors

The cited project examples show thermal capture, rendering, or streaming—not measured garden-intruder performance. One ESP32-S3 project reports rendering a 32×24 thermal input as a 320×240 image, but the larger display is an upscaled rendering, not additional sensor detail. The project README documents that implementation. None of these sources provides an animal-classification result, validated detection distance, target-size test, false-alarm rate, or weatherproofing result for a garden installation.
