Fill the reservoir marked for automatic detergent with the liquid product allowed by your washer’s manual, choose or confirm the dose setting, close the drawer completely, and start the cycle. Do not assume every detergent drawer is an automatic reservoir: some sections are for one load only, fabric softener, powder, or pods.

Automatic dosing is model-specific. The safest method is to identify every compartment, check the exact manual for permitted detergent types and concentration, then verify the dose and refill status before washing.

First identify what kind of dispenser you have

Open the drawer and read its labels rather than relying on its shape. A modern washer may combine several systems in one drawer, while another model may have only a conventional single-load compartment.

Label or location What it normally does What to confirm
Auto Detergent, Detergent Tank, or equivalent Stores liquid detergent for automatic dispensing across multiple loads. Whether liquid only is allowed, and any concentration or fill-level limit.
Auto Softener Stores liquid fabric softener for automatic release during the rinse. Whether the washer has a separate tank and which products are permitted.
Manual Detergent Receives detergent for the current load only. Whether powder, liquid, tablets, or capsules are accepted on this model.
Single-load drawer without an auto label Holds the measured detergent for one cycle; it is not a bulk reservoir. The manufacturer’s recommended HE detergent type and the correct fill mark.

Samsung describes applicable machines with separate automatic detergent, automatic softener, and manual detergent areas, but drawer layouts differ by model and region. A compartment that looks like a tank is not necessarily an automatic-dose tank.

Check the manual before adding detergent

Detergent rules cannot be safely generalized across brands or even across models from the same brand. Find the model-specific instructions in the printed manual or the manufacturer’s support page before filling a tank.

Liquid and concentration restrictions

LG’s ezDispense guidance says its supported tanks should not be filled with powder, ultra-concentrated detergent, or gel-type products. It also warns against liquid that has clumped or solidified. Samsung’s instructions for its cited automatic design specify liquid detergent for the automatic detergent tank and liquid softener for the softener tank.

These are precise instructions for the named systems, not a universal rule for every automatic dispenser. If your manual permits a different formulation, follow that manual; if it is silent, do not experiment with powder, pods, or concentrated gel in the bulk tank.

High-efficiency detergent

Use the detergent category stated by the washer manual, commonly a low-sudsing HE liquid for front-loading machines. A conventional detergent can create excess suds, trigger error conditions, leave residue, or produce a poor rinse. The product label does not override a restriction in the washer manual.

Fill an automatic detergent tank correctly

  1. Turn the washer off or pause it. Avoid opening a drawer while the machine is dispensing or while a cycle is running unless the manual specifically permits it.
  2. Pull out the drawer and locate the tank. Use the label, icon, or diagram in the manual to distinguish Auto Detergent from Auto Softener and Manual Detergent.
  3. Open the tank cap. On the Samsung design described in its support instructions, the cap is opened before the liquid is poured in. Do not remove internal parts unless the manual tells you to.
  4. Add the approved liquid. Pour slowly to the marked maximum line. Do not dilute, mix brands, or combine detergent with softener in one tank unless the manual expressly specifies that procedure.
  5. Close the cap completely. A loose cap can allow leaks, evaporation, or incorrect dispensing.
  6. Push the drawer all the way in. LG and Samsung both emphasize that the drawer must be fully closed. The washer may refuse to start or may dispense incorrectly if it is not seated.
  7. Wipe spills immediately. Detergent on the drawer rails can harden and prevent the drawer from closing or moving correctly.

Stay below the marked level even if the reservoir appears to have room above it. Overfilling can spill into neighboring compartments and makes it harder to identify which liquid is being used.

Set or confirm the dose before washing

Automatic dosing does not work identically on all machines. Some washers estimate the amount from load conditions; others use a user-selected amount, detergent concentration, or cycle-specific setting. Never assume that the default is right for every load.

Load-sensing systems

A washer may weigh or estimate the load and release a calculated amount. The exact algorithm, adjustment range, and supported cycles are model-specific. Water hardness, soil level, and load size can still affect the amount of detergent needed, so use the machine’s controls and the detergent maker’s directions rather than treating automatic dosing as a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

User-selected levels

LG’s ezDispense guide describes three dosage levels and settings that can be saved by cycle on supported models. Your washer may use different names, levels, or menus. On the control panel or in the app, look for a detergent-dose, ezDispense, auto-dose, or concentration setting, then select the level appropriate to the load and product.

Concentration and product changes

If you replace a standard liquid with a concentrated formula, update the concentration or dose setting if the washer provides that option. Otherwise the machine may release too much or too little. Do not infer a setting from another brand’s bottle; use the product label and the washer manual together.

Run a cycle with automatic dispensing

  1. Load the drum without packing it tightly. Leave the clearance recommended in the manual so water and detergent can circulate.
  2. Check that the automatic detergent tank contains the approved liquid and that the automatic softener tank, if used, contains only approved softener.
  3. Confirm that automatic detergent dispensing is enabled for the selected cycle.
  4. Review the dose or concentration setting. Adjust it for the load, soil level, and detergent instructions.
  5. Choose the wash cycle and options, then press Start.
  6. After the cycle begins, watch for a drawer, tank, or refill warning. Stop and correct the issue according to the manual rather than repeatedly restarting the machine.

The machine may not dispense on cycles that do not use detergent, on certain rinse-only programs, or when automatic dosing has been disabled. Consult the cycle chart for your exact model.

Using powder, pods, tablets, or capsules

Alternative detergent formats usually require a manual route. Never place a packet in an automatic bulk tank unless the exact manual explicitly says it is designed for that purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pods and capsules

Samsung’s support guidance directs users to put pods in the drum, not in its automatic reservoir, and to turn automatic dispensing off if detergent remains in the reservoir. A pod placed in a tank can fail to dissolve, block the pump, or release an uncontrolled dose.

Samsung’s UK instructions also describe tablet or capsule placement for manual use, with regional and model differences. Follow the placement diagram for your machine; a capsule may belong at the rear or base of the empty drum rather than in the drawer.

Powder detergent

Powder may be accepted in a manual detergent compartment on some washers, but LG specifically excludes powder from the cited ezDispense tanks. If your machine lacks a manual compartment, use only the formats the manual approves. Do not pour powder into a liquid-only reservoir.

Manual liquid detergent

Some automatic-dose washers provide a manual compartment. Select manual dispensing in the controls, measure the liquid for one load, and pour it into that compartment. If detergent remains in the automatic tank, disable auto dispensing so the load does not receive both doses.

GE Profile combo warning

GE specifically warns against detergent packets in the drawer of the named Profile UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer. That warning illustrates why a general pod rule is unsafe: the acceptable location depends on the exact appliance.

Refill alerts and routine maintenance

Respond to refill indicators

Automatic machines may show a refill message or illuminate a tank icon when the level is low. Refill with the same approved product, close the cap, and seat the drawer fully. A low-level warning is not proof that every last drop has been dispensed; inspect the tank if the machine behaves unexpectedly.

Prevent hardened detergent

Samsung notes that hardened liquid can impair dispensing. Close the cap after each refill, keep the drawer closed when possible, and do not leave a partially filled tank unused for long periods if the manual advises otherwise. If the liquid has gelled or formed solids, stop using it and clean the tank according to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Clean the drawer

Remove the drawer only as described in the manual. Rinse removable parts with suitable water, clear residue from channels, dry them, and reinstall them correctly. LG recommends cleaning its dispenser monthly. Other manufacturers may specify a different interval or a dedicated cleaning cycle, so follow the schedule for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not force a stuck drawer or insert a brush into a pump opening that the manual does not identify as user-serviceable. Persistent blockage requires manufacturer service instructions.

Troubleshoot common dispensing problems

Symptom Likely checks Corrective action
The washer does not dispense detergent. Automatic dispensing may be off, the selected cycle may not use detergent, the tank may be empty, or the drawer may not be fully closed. Enable auto dispensing, choose a detergent cycle, refill if indicated, and push the drawer fully home.
Detergent remains in the tank. The liquid may have hardened, the outlet may be blocked, or the dose may be lower than expected. Pause use, clean the reservoir as directed, verify the dose setting, and use fresh approved liquid.
Too many suds appear. Wrong detergent, excessive dose, or a concentration setting that does not match the product. Stop adding detergent, check that the product is approved HE liquid, correct the setting, and run the manual’s recommended rinse procedure.
Softener appears in the wash. Detergent and softener may have been placed in the wrong tanks or a cap may be misinstalled. Empty and clean the affected compartments, then reload each tank according to its label.
The drawer will not close. Spilled or hardened product, an overfilled tank, or a displaced insert may obstruct the rails. Remove the drawer if permitted, clean and dry the rails, reinstall inserts, and keep liquid below the fill line.
A pod does not dissolve. The pod may be in a drawer that prohibits packets or in an unsuitable cycle. Use the drum or manual location specified for that model and disable automatic dosing when required.

If cleaning and settings checks do not resolve a fault, record the model number and the displayed error, then use the manufacturer’s service procedure. Repeatedly forcing the drawer or adding extra detergent can worsen a blockage.

How automatic and manual dispensing differ

Feature Automatic reservoir Manual compartment or drum
Amount added Released by a dose setting or machine-controlled program. Measured by the user for one cycle.
Typical product format Often liquid, subject to the exact manual’s restrictions. May accept powder, liquid, tablets, or capsules, depending on the model.
Refilling Periodic; refill alerts may be available. Every load.
Main risk Wrong product, concentration mismatch, hardened liquid, or an unclosed drawer. Over-measuring, incorrect compartment, or placing a packet where it cannot dissolve.

Whirlpool’s single-load dispenser guidance is useful context for conventional drawers, including its HE-detergent recommendation, but a single-load drawer should not be treated as a bulk automatic reservoir.

What to compare when choosing an automatic-dose washer

If you are selecting a new machine, compare the dispensing system rather than assuming all auto-dose models provide the same convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Accepted formats: Check whether the tank accepts only liquid, whether concentration limits are stated, and whether powder or pods have a separate manual route.
  • Manual override: Confirm that you can use a one-load dose when changing products or washing a special load.
  • Dose control: Look for load sensing, selectable levels, concentration input, and cycle-specific saved settings.
  • Refill information: Check whether the display identifies a low tank and whether the manual states tank capacity or a refill procedure.
  • Cleaning access: Make sure the reservoir can be removed and cleaned as the manufacturer requires, and note the recommended interval.
  • Cycle compatibility: Read which programs use automatic detergent and which require manual dosing.

The manufacturer pages cited for these procedures do not establish a universal detergent saving, load count, or dosing-accuracy figure. Choose based on the controls, product compatibility, maintenance access, and instructions for the exact model.

Safe-use checklist

  • Read the model-specific manual before the first refill.
  • Match detergent and softener to the labels on the tanks.
  • Use only the approved formulation and concentration.
  • Keep powder and pods out of liquid-only automatic reservoirs.
  • Disable automatic dispensing when using a manual dose if the tank still contains detergent.
  • Close caps and push the drawer fully shut.
  • Stay below the marked fill line.
  • Clean the dispenser on the stated schedule; LG’s ezDispense guidance recommends monthly cleaning for supported models.
  • Investigate refill warnings, hardened liquid, leaks, or unusual suds before the next load.
