Google’s Android help documents connecting a game controller and swapping certain button or joystick assignments, but it does not document a built-in way to move the Android mouse pointer with a controller. That does not prove a particular phone, Android build, or third-party tool cannot do it; Google’s published instructions simply do not establish that capability. If you need pointer control, Android 16 and later document Mouse Keys for a physical keyboard. Switch Access offers a different, scan-based way to navigate and select items.

Can an Android game controller move the mouse pointer?

There is no controller-to-pointer setup in Google’s documented Android game-controller settings. Google describes connecting a wired or Bluetooth controller, then changing selected button or joystick assignments. The documented changes are swapping two button assignments or swapping the left and right joysticks—not assigning an analog stick or button to mouse movement, pointer clicks, or scrolling. See Google’s Android controller setup instructions.

That is a limit of what the official instructions document, not proof that pointer control is impossible on every Android device. An OEM might provide a device-specific feature, or an app might add functionality, but the cited Google help does not settle whether any particular model, OS build, controller, or remapping tool supports it. Avoid treating a controller’s ability to navigate or play games as evidence that it can control a system mouse pointer: those are different input behaviors.

If you want to check your own device, first connect the controller and inspect the available controller settings. If the settings only offer button and joystick swaps, those settings do not provide the pointer mapping you are looking for. For a definite answer about an undocumented setup, the relevant details are the exact phone or tablet model, Android version or build, controller, and any remapping app involved.

What the documented options actually do

Option Documented input What it controls Is it gamepad-to-pointer mapping?
Android game-controller settings Compatible wired or Bluetooth game controller Connection, selected button swaps, and left/right joystick swaps No pointer mapping is documented
Mouse Keys Physical keyboard; Android 16 and later Moves the mouse pointer and supports clicking, holding, and scrolling No; Google documents keyboard input
Switch Access External switches or a keyboard connected over USB or Bluetooth Scans and highlights screen items for selection; point scanning targets a location No; it is switch-based scanning, not continuous stick-driven movement
Google Play Games Controls Editor Keyboard keys while playing mobile games on PC Maps keyboard input to touchscreen controls in supported games No; it concerns games on PC, not an Android phone’s pointer

The important distinctions are the input device, where the feature runs, and what it produces. Mouse Keys moves a pointer, but its documented input is a physical keyboard. Switch Access can help select screen items or target a location, but it uses scanning rather than a continuously controlled pointer. Google Play Games’ editor maps keyboard keys to touch controls for games played on PC; it is unrelated to system-level pointer remapping on a phone. These distinctions matter because settings and instructions for one feature do not establish that another input device can use it.

Connect a controller and check its Android settings

Google documents connecting a controller either with a compatible cable or through Bluetooth. The labels and availability of menus can vary by device, so an Android version or manufacturer interface may not match every screen exactly.

  1. For a wired connection: connect the controller using a compatible cable. Google’s instructions do not specify a connector or model; the right cable depends on your device and controller.
  2. For Bluetooth: put the controller into pairing mode. On the Android device, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, then select the controller when it appears.
  3. Open the controller settings: for a wired controller, go to System > Game controllers. For a Bluetooth controller, open Connected devices, select the controller, and choose Game Controller settings.
  4. Review the available assignments: the documented customizations let you swap any two button assignments or swap the left and right joysticks. If no pointer or mouse action appears, this Android settings path does not provide the mapping.

These instructions can establish that Android recognizes and configures a controller, but they do not make every controller function as a mouse. If pairing fails, first make sure the controller is actually in pairing mode and that you selected it from the device’s pairing list. For a wired setup, confirm that the cable is compatible with both devices. The official guidance does not promise that every controller, cable, or Android device will work together.

Use Mouse Keys if you have a physical keyboard

On Android 16 and later, Google documents Mouse Keys as a way to control the pointer with a physical keyboard. The feature requires a physical keyboard to be attached for the relevant accessibility setting to appear. It can be useful if your goal is pointer movement and you can use keyboard input, but it is not a documented way to send gamepad input to the pointer.

8Bitdo Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller for Android devices, Black
  • Compatible with Android devices and fits mobile devices ranging from 100mm to 170mm in length.
  • Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons
  • Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.

With Mouse Keys enabled, keyboard primary keys or the numpad can move the pointer. Google also documents mouse-button clicks and holds, scrolling, and adjustments for pointer acceleration and maximum speed. The shortcut documented for Mouse Keys is Action + Alt + 4 after the feature is enabled. Consult Google’s physical keyboard accessibility instructions for the setting details on your device.

  • The setting is missing: check that the device is running Android 16 or later and that a physical keyboard is attached. Google says the setting appears when a keyboard is connected.
  • The pointer does not respond to the controller: that is expected under the documented setup. Mouse Keys is described as keyboard pointer control, not game-controller pointer control.
  • Movement feels too fast or slow: the documented feature includes pointer acceleration and maximum-speed adjustments; use those settings to tune keyboard movement.

Use Switch Access for scanning and selection

Switch Access is an accessibility feature for navigating the screen through switches or a keyboard. Google describes it this way: “Switch Access scans the items on your screen, highlighting each item in turn, until you make a selection.” It is not described as an analog stick moving a free pointer. Google’s overview is available in Control your Android device with Switch Access.

When point scanning helps

Point scanning is more spatial than item-by-item scanning: moving lines cross the display so you can choose a location. Google says this can be used for actions such as tap, swipe, or zoom. It can help reach a specific on-screen location when ordinary item scanning does not suit the task, but the selection still follows a scanning workflow. It is not documentation of a controller’s analog stick continuously driving a mouse cursor. For the available scanning approaches, see Tips for using Switch Access.

Why Google Play Games’ Controls Editor is easy to confuse with this

The Controls Editor is a separate feature for mobile games played on PC. Google describes mapping keyboard keys to touchscreen controls, including virtual joysticks, for games that may not be optimized for PC input. That does not mean Android phones can map their game controllers to a system mouse pointer. The platform and direction of the mapping are different: keyboard keys become game touch inputs on PC, rather than a phone’s controller axes becoming mouse movement.

Google Play Help also notes: “Many mobile games are designed for touchscreens, which can be difficult to play with only a mouse pointer.” That warning concerns the experience of playing mobile games on PC; it is not a statement about controller pointer support in Android settings. See Google’s Controls Editor instructions.

How to choose the right next step

  • You want to play a game: connect the controller and check that the game supports it. Android’s documented assignment swaps may help with button or joystick layout, but they are not pointer assignments.
  • You need a moving pointer: if a physical keyboard is available and the device runs Android 16 or later, consider Mouse Keys. Google’s documented input is a keyboard, not a gamepad.
  • You need to navigate or select screen items with accessibility input: review Switch Access and its scanning options. Point scanning can target a screen location without acting like a joystick-controlled cursor.
  • You are playing a mobile game on PC: the Google Play Games Controls Editor may be relevant for mapping keyboard keys to touch controls. It is not an Android phone setting.
  • You need a controller to move the pointer on a particular Android device: check that device’s own documentation and the exact controller or remapping app involved. Google’s general Android controller instructions do not confirm or rule out such device-specific or third-party behavior.

There is also an Android accessibility feature called Autoclick (Dwell timing), but its name alone should not be taken as evidence that it maps a gamepad to the pointer. Google’s separate Autoclick help page describes that feature; the controller setup page does not connect it to gamepad pointer movement.
