Use an air-quality monitor as a screening and trend tool, not a detector that can name every odor or diagnose mold. For smoke, watch the PM2.5 channel and compare readings before, during and after the event. For musty odors, use humidity and moisture readings to guide a physical inspection; the monitor cannot prove that mold is present. For chemical smells, a VOC reading can show that the mixture of volatile chemicals changed, but it cannot identify the compound or establish that it is hazardous.

What an indoor air-quality monitor can actually tell you

A low-cost monitor contains one or more sensors that detect specific pollutants or environmental factors. Depending on the model, those channels may include particulate matter (especially PM2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide, radon, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, temperature and relative humidity. A monitor reports only what its installed sensors are designed to measure. It cannot provide a complete picture of indoor air quality; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, “It is not possible to get a complete representation of indoor air quality from using one.”

That limitation changes how to use the device. Treat a reading as evidence that conditions changed, a prompt to investigate, or a way to compare ventilation and source-control measures. Do not treat one number as proof of a particular source, a diagnosis, or a universal health limit.

What you notice Most useful channel What a rise can support What it cannot establish
Visible smoke, cooking haze or wildfire-smoke intrusion PM2.5 That airborne fine-particle concentration increased during the event Which combustion source produced the particles
Musty odor or suspected dampness Relative humidity plus temperature; sometimes a separate hygrometer That conditions may support moisture problems and deserve inspection That mold is present, its species, or the size of a hidden colony
Paint, solvent, cleaner, fragrance or new-material odor VOC sensor That the sensor detected a changing mixture of volatile chemicals The exact chemical, its concentration, or whether the odor is dangerous
Combustion-safety emergency Dedicated carbon-monoxide alarm and smoke detector Safety alarms designed for those hazards A low-cost multi-sensor monitor replacing required alarms

Use PM2.5 to investigate smoke

PM2.5 means airborne particles small enough to be a major health concern during smoke events. EPA’s wildland-smoke guidance identifies PM2.5 as the primary pollutant of concern in smoke and says sensors that measure it are the most useful for indoor measurements during smoke events. The same approach works for indoor combustion, such as frying, broiling, candles or a fireplace, although the monitor cannot determine which source caused a rise.

It is suitable for use in homes, vehicles, grow rooms, maternity and infant care rooms, and public spaces.

Step 1: Establish a baseline

  1. Place the monitor in the room where the smoke or odor is noticed, using the placement rules below.
  2. Run it for at least several hours while the suspected source is inactive.
  3. Record the PM2.5 readings and the conditions that could affect them: windows and doors, heating or cooling, filtration, cooking and occupancy.

A baseline is not a certified “safe” value. It is simply your comparison point for the same room and setup.

Step 2: Log the event

  1. When the odor or visible smoke appears, note the time and the activity underway.
  2. Keep doors, windows and HVAC settings in their normal state for the first comparison. Changing several conditions at once makes the result difficult to interpret.
  3. Record the PM2.5 value at intervals shown by the device or app, and continue after the source stops.

Step 3: Compare before, during and after

A repeatable PM2.5 increase that starts with the event and falls after the event is evidence that airborne particles increased. It is not proof of a particular source. Repeat the observation on another occasion if possible. A one-time spike can result from a nearby activity, an airflow change, sensor behavior or outdoor infiltration.

Step 4: Check outside conditions and nearby sources

Wildfire smoke, traffic, neighbors’ combustion, construction and other outdoor sources can enter through open windows, doors, leaks and mechanical ventilation. Compare your indoor timeline with outdoor smoke conditions and nearby activities. If the indoor rise occurs with windows closed, inspect indoor combustion and HVAC operation rather than assuming the source is outdoors.

  • Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.

Step 5: Reduce the source and verify the change

Use source control first. For cooking, EPA gives a range hood or, where appropriate, opening a window as examples of actions that can reduce exposure. After changing ventilation or stopping the source, continue logging PM2.5. A fall toward the earlier baseline supports the conclusion that the intervention helped, while a persistent elevation calls for further investigation.

Investigate musty odors without treating the monitor as a mold test

An air-quality monitor does not directly establish that mold is present. Mold grows where there is moisture, so humidity and temperature readings can help you find conditions that merit inspection. Look for plumbing leaks, roof or window leaks, condensation, damp carpets, wet drywall, water-stained materials and areas with poor drying.

CDC/NIOSH states that any mold growing in a building indicates a water or moisture problem and says, “We do not recommend routine air sampling for mold with building air quality evaluations.” That means a normal-looking monitor display does not clear a room, and a humidity reading does not identify a hidden colony.

Also allow 10 minutes for warm-up after moving between hot and cold environments – this ensures stable, reliable data every time.

Use humidity as a clue, then inspect the building

  1. Place the monitor in the room with the odor and record relative humidity and temperature over several days, including after showers, cooking, rain and HVAC cycles.
  2. Look for repeated periods of elevated humidity, condensation on cold surfaces or materials that remain damp.
  3. Inspect behind and beneath furniture, around windows and plumbing, under sinks, near appliances and along exterior walls.
  4. Document visible growth, staining, peeling finishes and the likely water source. Photographs and dates help show whether the problem is recurring.
  5. Fix the leak, condensation or drying failure. Clean affected materials appropriately, and obtain professional help for large, hidden, contaminated or structurally complex problems.

Do not rely on an air cleaner to solve a mold problem. EPA says portable air cleaners and HVAC filters “do not address the cause of mold,” because the cause is a water or moisture problem. Filtration can affect particles in the air, but it does not repair a leak or remove growth from building materials.

Interpret VOC readings when something smells

Most consumer VOC sensors respond to a broad mixture of volatile chemicals rather than identifying individual compounds. A sudden increase can help you time an investigation around painting, solvents, cleaning products, fragrances, cooking or off-gassing furniture and building materials. The displayed value does not tell you which chemical caused the response, whether the concentration is toxic, or whether the smell itself is dangerous.

A practical VOC investigation

  1. Record the VOC level and the time the odor is noticed.
  2. List activities and products used in the preceding hours: sprays, disinfectants, paint, adhesives, fuel, cosmetics, air fresheners, cooking and newly unpacked materials.
  3. Repeat the observation with the suspected activity stopped, keeping placement and ventilation consistent.
  4. Ventilate safely and remove, seal or isolate the suspected source when practical. Do not create a safety hazard by opening windows during an outdoor smoke event or by handling unknown chemicals without appropriate precautions.
  5. Use the monitor to see whether the response declines after the source is controlled; do not use the decline as proof that every contaminant has been removed.

What can help with persistent odors

Source removal and ventilation are the primary controls. For some gases and odors that remain after source control, EPA describes gas-phase filters that use sorbent material such as activated carbon to adsorb gases and odors. Their performance depends on the chemical, the amount and quality of sorbent, airflow and replacement timing. A particle-only filter does not perform the same gas-phase function.

Place the monitor so its readings represent the room

EPA recommends the breathing zone, roughly 3–6 feet above the floor for a typical adult, with air able to enter the device freely. Placement is as important as the sensor specification because drafts, heat and concentrated plumes can produce readings that do not represent the room’s general air.

Recommended placement

  • Use a stable surface or wall position in the occupied part of the room.
  • Keep the inlet and outlet openings unobstructed.
  • For comparisons between rooms or days, use the same height and approximate distance from walls and furnishings.
  • Document the room, height, distance from sources, window and door state, HVAC operation and observation time.

Locations to avoid

  • Immediately beside a stove, fireplace, candle or other combustion source.
  • Directly in front of a supply vent, return grille, fan or air purifier outlet.
  • Next to an open window, exterior door or persistent draft.
  • Inside a cabinet, behind furniture or where curtains and objects block airflow.
  • In a cleaning-product cupboard or directly beside stored chemicals.

Those locations can be useful for a targeted source experiment, but label the result as a source-proximity measurement rather than a room average. Return the monitor to the breathing zone for decisions about occupants’ exposure.

Read trends instead of chasing a single number

EPA cautions that low-cost monitor accuracy and precision vary with placement, time in use, data processing, temperature, relative humidity, contaminants and manufacturer. There are no widely accepted indoor performance criteria or health-based alert thresholds for most pollutants. A device alert therefore does not necessarily mean that an indoor-air problem exists.

Build a repeatable log

For each observation, record the date and time, room, sensor values, activity, window and door state, HVAC or filtration state, occupancy and any visible smoke or odor. Compare like with like: the same room, height and operating conditions. A repeated pattern is more informative than the maximum value shown on a dashboard.

Use alerts as prompts, not diagnoses

If an alert coincides with cooking, stop or control the source and check whether PM2.5 declines. If VOCs rise after a product is used, isolate the product and ventilate safely. If humidity repeatedly rises with condensation or damp materials, investigate the moisture source. The monitor helps select the next action; it does not name the cause.

Know when the monitor is the wrong instrument

  • For carbon monoxide, install and maintain dedicated CO alarms that meet local requirements.
  • For fire, use smoke detectors; do not wait for a general-purpose monitor notification.
  • For severe smoke, breathing difficulty, suspected poisoning or another immediate danger, leave the area and follow emergency or professional guidance.
  • For suspected mold, prioritize moisture investigation and remediation rather than routine air sampling.

Selection criterion What to look for Why it matters
Sensor coverage PM2.5 for smoke; VOC for changing chemical mixtures; carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity for context Each channel answers a different question, and missing sensors cannot be added through software
Data access Readable local display, historical graphs, export and notifications Before/during/after comparisons require a usable history, not just a current value
Placement and power Mains or battery operation, portable form, clear airflow openings You may need to move the device while keeping its orientation and location documented
Calibration and documentation Manufacturer instructions, stated limitations and any independent evaluation Accuracy and precision depend on conditions and processing; transparent limitations are essential
Alert behavior User-set or manufacturer-defined thresholds that are clearly labeled Alerts are prompts for investigation, not universal indoor health limits

There is no single validated consumer-monitor accuracy percentage or universal indoor odor or mold threshold that applies to all devices. Be cautious of products that present a precise score without explaining the sensor, environmental limits and data-processing assumptions.

Troubleshoot confusing readings

PM2.5 remains high after the smoke disappears

  • Check whether cooking, candles, fireplaces or another indoor combustion source is still active.
  • Look for outdoor smoke entering through windows, doors or ventilation.
  • Confirm that an air purifier or HVAC system is not blowing particles toward the sensor.
  • Return the monitor to an unobstructed breathing-zone location and repeat the comparison.

VOC rises but there is no obvious odor

  • Review recent cleaning, fragrance, cooking, painting, adhesives and new-material activities.
  • Check whether humidity, temperature or airflow changed at the same time.
  • Repeat the event with the suspected product removed or isolated, without exposing people to an unsafe chemical.
  • Do not infer toxicity from the sensor response alone.

Humidity looks normal but a room smells musty

  • Inspect for intermittent leaks, condensation and damp materials; a short-term average can hide a brief wetting event.
  • Check concealed areas and the history of the building, including previous water damage.
  • Use the monitor as supporting evidence, not as clearance testing.

Readings change dramatically when the monitor is moved

Different airflow, temperature, humidity and proximity to a source can all change the result. Standardize height, distance, ventilation and orientation before comparing rooms. Allow the device to operate long enough for its display to settle according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then compare repeated observations rather than a single transition.

A repeatable investigation checklist

  1. Define the question: smoke particles, a chemical odor, or a possible moisture problem.
  2. Confirm that the monitor has the relevant channel and that dedicated smoke and CO alarms are installed where required.
  3. Place the device in the breathing zone with unobstructed airflow.
  4. Record a baseline for at least several hours with the suspected source inactive.
  5. Log the activity, time, ventilation and sensor values when the event occurs.
  6. Compare before, during and after readings under consistent conditions.
  7. Inspect and control the likely source: combustion, outdoor infiltration, chemicals, leaks or damp materials.
  8. Repeat the observation after the corrective action.
  9. Escalate to a qualified professional or emergency service for immediate hazards, severe symptoms, large or complex mold problems, or suspected carbon monoxide.
