Use the least access that enables the task, then audit it. For Gemini on Android, start by deciding whether you need a device action, notification reply, phone call, voice input or location-based result. Grant only the Google app permission or special access that task requires, and leave unrelated categories denied. Gemini can continue supporting other tasks when an individual permission is refused, although the action that depends on it will not work.

Menu names and available features vary by Android version, phone manufacturer, region and app configuration. The examples below use Google’s documented Gemini setup and the Google app that hosts its Android assistant capabilities.

What “minimum necessary access” means on Android

Android permissions are not an all-or-nothing choice. A permission should answer a specific question: What task do I want the assistant to perform, and what data or control is technically needed for that task? If you want a timer or a typed explanation, you generally do not need contacts, call logs, location or notification access. If you want Gemini to read a message notification aloud, notification access is relevant; if you want it to call someone, phone access is relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemini’s Android assistant capabilities are provided through the Google app. Consequently, the permission screen you need to review is usually the Google app’s screen, not a separate “Gemini” permission list. Google says system permissions and device data used with Gemini can include calls and messages, contacts, installed apps and screen content. Those broad categories describe what may be available for supported features; they do not mean every category must be enabled for every request.

Google’s Device assistance help also states that Gemini can work with the Device assistance app without certain settings and permissions, but the associated actions will not work. That distinction is the basis for a safer setup: deny an access category when you do not need its feature, rather than assuming the entire assistant must be disabled.

Match the access to the task

Use this map before changing settings. “Special access” means a control outside the ordinary Allow/Don’t allow runtime-permission dialog.

Task Access or setting that may be required What the access exposes or enables Can other Gemini tasks remain available?
Typed questions, explanations and many basic requests No extra sensitive permission may be needed Text you submit and the app/device context needed for the request Usually yes; unsupported actions simply cannot run
Quick device actions and some settings changes Google set as the default digital assistant for certain actions Assistant invocation and the ability to perform supported device actions Yes, for tasks that do not depend on default-assistant status
Read or reply to notifications Notification access, a separate special-access control Notifications that the assistant is allowed to read and reply to Yes, but notification reading and replies will not work without it
Place a call through Gemini’s Phone app Phone permission for the Google app Phone-call capability Yes, for unrelated supported requests
Find a device contact that is not synced to the Google Account Contacts access, optional for this convenience Device-stored contacts used for lookup Yes; contacts are not a universal prerequisite
Help identify the right person to call Call Logs access, optional for that convenience Call-history information used to disambiguate a contact Yes; calls and other tasks may still work without it, subject to their own requirements
Voice requests or “Hey Google” Microphone permission; background microphone use applies when the wake phrase is enabled Audio input for voice requests Yes; typed input or tap-to-speak can be used where supported
Nearby results or local weather Location permission, with precise location as an optional higher-accuracy setting Location context for local answers Yes, but nearby results and weather may be less useful or unavailable

The table is a task guide, not a promise that every phone exposes identical controls. Check the wording on your device before accepting a prompt.

Review the Google app’s permissions first

Open the permission screen

  1. Find the Google app icon in your launcher or app drawer.
  2. Press and hold the icon, then tap App info.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. Select a permission category to see its current status, then choose Allow or Don’t allow as appropriate.

Android also lets you reach app-level controls from Settings, but the exact path and labels differ by manufacturer. Look for the Google app in the Apps list, open its permissions, and inspect sensitive categories individually.

Start with the categories that matter most

Review microphone, location, contacts, phone and camera rather than accepting every request in one session. Camera access is not identified as a universal Gemini requirement in the documented Android assistant examples; leave it denied unless a particular feature on your phone clearly needs it. The same least-privilege rule applies to every category: an assistant request should justify the access it receives.

Use denial as a controlled test

If a task still works after you deny a permission, keep it denied. If Android or Gemini reports that the action needs access, decide whether that action is worth the additional exposure. You can grant the permission for the task and return later to revoke it. Denying one category should not be treated as a test of whether Gemini works at all.

Configure device actions without opening everything

Check whether default-assistant status is required

Some Gemini quick actions and settings controls require Google to be the phone’s default digital assistant. This is a separate system choice from ordinary permissions. If you do not need those actions, do not change the default assistant merely to make other Gemini features available. If you do need them, review the confirmation screen carefully because it controls how assistant requests are invoked across the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test one action at a time

  1. Choose a concrete action, such as setting a timer or turning on Do Not Disturb.
  2. Ask Gemini to perform only that action.
  3. If it fails, read the explanation for the missing setting or permission instead of granting unrelated access.
  4. Grant the named requirement, repeat the same test, and then review the permission later in App info.

Google’s documented behavior is feature-specific: Gemini may continue working with Device assistance while a required setting is off, but the listed action will not work. This lets you keep a narrow configuration while preserving ordinary assistant use.

Notification access: grant it only for notification work

Reading or replying to notifications requires notification access, which is a special access control rather than a normal runtime permission. Without it, Gemini cannot perform the notification-reading or notification-reply features that depend on that access. Other supported tasks can remain available.

  1. Ask Gemini to read or reply to a notification, or open the relevant assistant setting.
  2. Follow Android’s prompt to the notification-access screen.
  3. Enable access for the Google app only if notification handling is a feature you actually intend to use.
  4. After testing, return to the same special-access screen and switch it off when you no longer want the assistant to inspect notifications.

Notification access can reveal the contents of messages, alerts and other app notifications. Treat it as a high-context capability: do not enable it simply because the assistant requested a broad setup.

Calling, contacts and call logs are separate choices

Phone permission for calls

Gemini’s Phone app integration requires Phone permission for the Google app. If you want Gemini to place a call, grant that permission and test the call. If you never use assistant-initiated calls, leave it denied; timers, typed questions and unrelated supported actions do not become invalid merely because Phone access is off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contacts access is optional for a specific lookup case

Google says Contacts access can help Gemini call device contacts that are not synced to your Google Account. That is a convenience, not a blanket prerequisite for making every supported call. If your contacts are already available through the account you use, you may decide that device-contact access is unnecessary.

Call Logs access is an optional disambiguation aid

Call Logs can help Gemini identify the right person when more than one contact or number could match. It also exposes call-history information. Enable it only if that convenience outweighs the additional data access. You can keep Phone permission while denying Contacts or Call Logs, because these categories serve different purposes.

Disconnect the Phone app when you want a stronger boundary

Google provides a Connected Apps control for the Phone app. Disconnecting it is an account or service-level control, separate from Android’s runtime permission switches. Use it when you want to stop the integration rather than merely block one permission. Reconnect only when you need the calling feature again.

Voice input: microphone access is optional if you type

Google’s permissions documentation says microphone access enables Assistant voice requests. When “Hey Google” is enabled, the microphone can be used in the background for wake-phrase detection. If you prefer not to keep that capability active, use typed input or tap-to-speak where your device supports it, and revoke microphone permission when voice input is not needed.

  1. Open the Google app’s App info → Permissions.
  2. Tap Microphone.
  3. Choose the most limited option your Android version offers, or choose Don’t allow if you will type.
  4. If you keep microphone access, review the “Hey Google” setting separately so the wake phrase matches your intended use.

Microphone permission controls audio input; it does not by itself control every other form of assistant context. Keep the decision focused on whether you want voice requests.

Location: choose accuracy according to the result you need

Location is a trade-off rather than a simple on/off privacy guarantee. Precise location can improve nearby results, directions-related answers and local weather. Turning precise location off or denying location can reduce the quality of those results. Google also says Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Maps, to fulfill a request, so changing one toggle does not necessarily stop all location processing across Google services.

Change the Google app’s location setting

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Location.
  3. Tap App location permissions.
  4. Select Google.
  5. Choose the available access level and review the Use precise location control.

On some phones, the labels or hierarchy differ. Select approximate or limited access when it provides enough context for the task. Deny location entirely if you do not need local results, and expect weather or nearby answers to become less useful.

Keep service-level location in mind

When an answer depends on location supplied by another Google service, review that service’s own settings and connected-app relationship. A permission change in the Google app is one part of the decision, not a guarantee that every Google service will stop providing location context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audit what happened with Privacy dashboard

Android’s Privacy dashboard shows which apps accessed selected permissions and when. Google documents a seven-day activity history on Android 13 and a 24-hour history on Android 12. These are lookback windows for the dashboard, not measurements of how often people use a permission.

  3. Select a permission such as microphone, location or camera.
  4. Review the apps and times shown in the activity history.
  5. Tap an app entry to change its access, when Android offers that control.

If the menu is different, check the phone’s Android version and search Settings for “Privacy dashboard.” Google’s instructions identify some of these steps as applying only to certain Android 12 or Android 13-and-newer configurations, and manufacturers can rename or rearrange the screens.

Use the dashboard as an audit, not a complete log

The dashboard covers the permissions and history window Android exposes on that device. It does not replace the assistant’s account-level privacy controls, connected-app settings or the privacy information describing what happens to prompts and shared content. Review those controls separately.

Separate Android permissions from Gemini account controls

Device assistance and Keep Activity

Google says Device assistance is designed to work on Android even when Gemini Keep Activity is off. Keep Activity is an account-level setting, not an Android runtime permission. Turning it off therefore does not create a simple equivalent of denying microphone, location or contacts access; the controls address different layers of the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connected Apps

Connected Apps settings let you disconnect integrations such as the Phone app. This is separate from the Google app’s App info → Permissions screen. A disconnected app may stop supplying a capability even if an Android permission remains allowed, while revoking a permission can block a capability without disconnecting the service.

Prompts, shared content and human review

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, embedded in the privacy hub last updated September 24, 2026, is dated June 29, 2026. It describes collection of prompts, shared files or screen content, app and device context and some system-permission data. Google also says that some collected data may be reviewed by human reviewers for stated purposes. Do not submit confidential material merely because the assistant can access it, and avoid sharing information that you would not want handled under those terms.

Permission minimization reduces device access; it does not make a prompt anonymous or eliminate the service’s account and processing policies. Consider both layers before using Gemini for sensitive work.

A practical permission-minimization workflow

  1. Name the outcome. Write down the exact action: “set a timer,” “reply to a notification,” “call a device-only contact,” or “give me local weather.”
  2. Identify the narrow dependency. Use the task map to determine whether the action needs default-assistant status, notification access, Phone permission, microphone or location.
  3. Open the Google app’s permissions. Leave unrelated categories denied and inspect the current status before accepting a new prompt.
  4. Grant the smallest useful scope. If Android offers approximate location or a while-in-use choice, select it when that is sufficient. For account integrations, connect only the app needed for the task.
  5. Run a controlled test. Perform the one action you intended to enable. Do not broaden access just because another feature is unavailable.
  6. Review special access. Check notification access and default-assistant status separately; they are not ordinary permission toggles.
  7. Audit activity. Use Privacy dashboard to see recent microphone, location and other selected-permission use.
  8. Revoke unused access. Return to App info, special access or Connected Apps and turn off capabilities you no longer use.
  9. Review account privacy. Check Keep Activity and the Gemini privacy notice before submitting prompts, files or screen content that contain sensitive information.

Troubleshooting when a task stops working

Gemini says it cannot read or reply to a notification

  • Confirm that notification access is enabled for the Google app in Android’s special-access settings.
  • Check that the notification still exists and that the originating app permits replies.
  • If you do not want notification access, keep it off and use typed questions or other supported features instead.

A call cannot be placed

  • Check Phone permission for the Google app.
  • If the intended person is stored only on the device, decide whether Contacts access is worth enabling.
  • If Gemini cannot distinguish between people, Call Logs may provide the optional disambiguation help; it is not required for every assistant task.
  • Check whether the Phone app is disconnected under Connected Apps.

Voice requests fail but typed requests work

  • Verify Microphone permission for the Google app.
  • Check whether “Hey Google” is enabled if you expect wake-phrase activation.
  • If you do not want microphone access, continue with typing or tap-to-speak where supported.

Nearby answers or weather are inaccurate

  • Review the Google app’s location permission and the precise-location control.
  • Choose precise location only when the additional accuracy is useful.
  • Remember that another Google service, such as Maps, may provide precise location for a request; review its settings as well.

A quick setting or device action is unavailable

  • Check whether the action requires Google to be the default digital assistant.
  • Confirm that the requested action is supported on your Android version, manufacturer build and region.
  • Do not grant unrelated contacts, microphone or location access unless the error specifically identifies that dependency.

When to revisit your choices

Recheck permissions after an Android upgrade, a Google app update, a phone change or a change in how you use Gemini. Feature support and menu labels can change by Android release, manufacturer, region and app configuration. A quarterly review is reasonable for a regularly used phone; review immediately after enabling a new assistant feature or connecting another app.

  • Google app permissions still match the tasks you perform.
  • Notification access is off if you no longer want notification reading or replies.
  • Phone, Contacts and Call Logs are limited to the calling conveniences you actually use.
  • Microphone access and “Hey Google” match your preferred input method.
  • Location precision is no higher than necessary for your local-result needs.
  • Privacy dashboard activity does not reveal unexpected use.
  • Connected Apps contains only integrations you recognize.
  • You understand that prompts, shared content and device context remain governed by Gemini’s privacy notice even when Android permissions are minimized.

The safest practical configuration is therefore not “deny everything” and not “allow everything.” It is a small, task-specific set of permissions, checked in Android’s dashboard and reviewed separately at the account and connected-app levels.
