AirTags and similar Bluetooth trackers are designed to help locate belongings, not to provide guaranteed, live tracking of a person. Their alerts can help identify a tracker moving with you, but an alert is a reason to investigate—not proof of malicious intent. If one appears, use your phone’s finding tools, document what you learn, and disable the tracker itself only when it is safe to do so.
What AirTags and Bluetooth trackers actually do
An AirTag sends out a Bluetooth signal that nearby Apple devices in the Find My network can detect. Those devices relay a location to iCloud, where the owner can see it in Find My. Apple describes this relay as anonymous and encrypted. Because location reporting depends on compatible devices being nearby, an AirTag is not a standalone GPS or cellular locator and does not guarantee continuous, real-time updates. Apple’s AirTag product page describes the item-finding system and nearby Precision Finding on supported hardware.
Precision Finding is for locating a nearby AirTag with supported devices; it is distinct from a remote location update relayed through the network. Apple says AirTag can be shared with up to five people, that the Find My network includes more than a billion Apple devices, and that temporary sharing of a lost item’s location ends when the item is reunited or after seven days. These are Apple’s product-page statements, not independent measurements.
Why your phone may not alert you
Unknown-tracker alerts depend on the phone’s operating system, the tracker family, and settings. Apple’s guidance distinguishes general Tracking Notifications, available with iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later, from alerts for compatible Bluetooth location-tracking devices, which require iOS or iPadOS 17.5 or later. Apple advises keeping Bluetooth and Location Services on, enabling Tracking Notifications, turning off Airplane Mode, and enabling Significant Locations for notifications when arriving at significant locations. See Apple’s current instructions.

Google says unknown tracker alerts and manual scans are available on Android 6.0 or later. Its supported families include Apple AirTags and Find Hub network-compatible tags and headphones. The compatibility of a particular model matters; an alert feature is not a universal detector for every Bluetooth or GPS tracker. Google’s steps are in Find unknown trackers.
Apple and Google announced a cross-platform unwanted-tracking alert specification on 13 May 2024. They said compatible devices moving with someone over time could trigger alerts that let the person view an identifier, play a sound, and access disabling instructions. The announcement named Chipolo, eufy, Jio, Motorola, and Pebblebee as manufacturers that had committed to future compatibility at that time; that dated commitment does not establish that every model from those makers is compatible today. Apple’s announcement explains the specification.

What an unknown-tracker alert means
An alert means your phone detected a compatible tracker traveling with you over time. It is a prompt to check, not proof that someone is stalking you: borrowed keys, a bag, or traveling with a friend or family member who owns a tracker can explain it.

What to do if an unfamiliar tracker is traveling with you
- Assess immediate safety. If you feel at risk, go to a safe public place and contact a trusted person or law enforcement. Do not confront a suspected tracker owner.
- Use the alert’s finding tools. On iPhone, open the alert in Find My to review the detection map and, where available, play a sound or use Precision Finding for an unknown AirTag. On Android, open the alert to view the map and play a sound; Find Nearby is available for Find Hub-compatible trackers.
- Check your belongings and nearby surroundings. Look through bags and clothing and inspect the vehicle if the tracker is not immediately located. A tracker may be concealed, so avoid putting yourself in danger while searching.
- Save identifying information. Keep screenshots of the alert and map. For an AirTag, hold an NFC-capable phone near its white side; the page that opens can show its serial number and the last four digits of the registered phone number. Preserve the information for your own records or to share with authorities.
- Decide whether to disable it safely. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific tracker. Google cautions that disabling some trackers can affect whether law enforcement can obtain owner information; if turning it off could increase danger or compromise a response, consider leaving it on and seeking help first.
Apple’s support guidance says AirTags and compatible accessories should not be used to track people or property that does not belong to the owner. Its full response steps are in Apple Support’s unwanted-tracking guidance; Google’s safety and disabling guidance is in Google’s Android Help article.
Turning off your phone’s settings does not disable the tracker
Turning off Bluetooth or Location Services on your phone, enabling Airplane Mode, or disabling Find My on the phone does not stop the tracker from sharing its location through other nearby devices. To stop the tracker, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for disabling that item. If you are worried about safety or preserving evidence, get to a safe place and seek help before taking action.

What Tile Scan and Secure can—and cannot—find
Life360’s Tile Scan and Secure feature checks for nearby Tiles and Tile-enabled devices that may be traveling with you. Life360 says it is available in the Tile app on iOS and Android without an active account, provided Bluetooth, Location or Location Services, and Precise Location are enabled. To scan, move away from your starting location by walking, driving, or otherwise changing locations; circling around one place does not work properly. The feature is scoped to Tile devices and is not a universal detector for all Bluetooth or GPS trackers. See Life360’s Tile Scan and Secure instructions.
