AI can make a legal document easier to read, but it cannot tell you whether signing is safe or provide advice for your specific situation. In 2026, consumer-oriented tools can summarize parties, duties, dates, money and clauses, while professional products add redlining, playbook checks and source-linked review. The practical approach is to use AI for orientation, verify every important answer against the document, and escalate consequential or jurisdiction-specific questions to a qualified lawyer.

This guide focuses on products and limitations documented for the United States. Rules, contract conventions and product availability can differ elsewhere.

What an AI legal-document tool actually does

Most tools perform language and document-analysis tasks rather than legal representation. After you provide a readable file or pasted text, the system can identify the apparent parties, defined terms, dates, amounts, obligations and exceptions; summarize individual clauses; and answer questions about wording in the uploaded document. Some professional systems can also compare provisions with a firm’s playbook, suggest redlines or link an answer to source language.

That output is an explanation of text, not a determination that the agreement is fair, enforceable or suitable for you. A summary can omit a qualification, misunderstand a cross-reference or miss a clause. LegalZoom’s Doc Assist warns that its information may be incomplete or inaccurate and does not provide legal advice. Microsoft’s documentation similarly says its Legal Agent is not designed or approved to provide legal advice. Mark Lyda, an attorney in LegalZoom’s network, described the boundary this way: “AI is a powerful tool that can summarize complex documents and identify risks, but it cannot cross the line into providing legal advice.”

Useful questions AI can answer

  • Who are the parties, and how are they defined?
  • What must each party do, by which dates, and under what conditions?
  • How are payment, renewal, termination, confidentiality, intellectual-property, indemnity and liability provisions worded?
  • Which clauses refer to another section, exhibit, policy or external document?
  • What terms appear unusually broad, one-sided, ambiguous or inconsistent with another clause?

Questions that require professional judgment

  • Whether a clause is enforceable under the governing law or the law where you live.
  • Whether the agreement gives up a right, creates a regulatory obligation or exposes you to an unacceptable risk.
  • How a dispute, deadline, employment issue, estate matter, immigration question or regulated transaction should be handled.
  • What wording should be negotiated for your facts, business structure or litigation position.

Use the first list to prepare for a conversation with counsel; do not treat an answer to the second list as a substitute for counsel.

Which 2026 tools fit which reader?

There is no neutral head-to-head accuracy ranking in the available product material. The meaningful distinction is audience and workflow: one product is explicitly aimed at consumers and small businesses, while the others are described for legal professionals, law firms or legal-technology providers.

Tool Intended audience and workflow Document handling Analysis described by the provider Important limits and escalation
LegalZoom Doc Assist Consumers and small businesses using English-language agreements intended for the United States; also common personal documents such as residential leases, website privacy policies and cell-phone contracts. Searchable, text-based PDF, DOCX, DOC or TXT files smaller than 5 MB. Scanned-image PDFs cannot be processed. Overview of parties, rights, obligations, dates and dollar amounts; clause summaries; document-specific questions and answers. Not legal advice; information may be incomplete or inaccurate; service is unavailable outside the United States. Users can request attorney review and download the summary.
LegalZoom plugin for Claude Contract-risk workflow that can be used with a contract-review conversation; the marketplace description is not a guarantee that every account, jurisdiction or contract is eligible. PDF, DOCX or pasted text. Classifies agreement type, extracts governing jurisdiction, reviews liability, intellectual property, confidentiality and payment terms, and uses a red/yellow/green risk framework. Analysis is expressly not legal advice. The company’s February 24, 2026 announcement says its connector can route a conversation and analysis to an independent attorney network; review current sharing and service terms before connecting a real document.
Microsoft Legal Agent Legal professionals working in Word; supports contract review, redlining, playbook alignment and clause analysis. Designed for a professional Word workflow rather than a general consumer upload service. Can link outputs to source language and help assess clauses against a playbook. Microsoft warns that output can be inaccurate or incomplete, citations can be wrong, the agent is not jurisdiction-aware by default, it does not incorporate live legal databases or recent legal changes, and it can miss clauses or nuance. Active human oversight and qualified professional review are required.
OpenAI Astra for Law Foundation for law firms and legal-technology companies; initial access was described for selected law firms. Professional legal configuration; consumer file limits and general availability are not established in the product announcement. Built for legal research and related professional workflows. Reported benchmark results are not a consumer document-accuracy guarantee or an independent ranking.

For a person trying to understand a lease, vendor contract or phone agreement, Doc Assist is the clearest consumer-oriented example in this set. The professional products make more sense when a law firm has controlled access, a review playbook, trained reviewers and a process for checking every output.

LegalZoom Doc Assist: the most direct consumer starting point

Doc Assist is described as a US-focused service for English-language agreements. Its FAQ lists small-business contracts alongside personal documents, so it can provide a first-pass map of a document before you decide what deserves human attention.

What you receive

  • An overview covering details such as parties, rights, obligations, dates and dollar amounts.
  • Summaries of individual clauses.
  • Answers to questions about the uploaded document.
  • A downloadable summary and an option to request attorney review.

File requirements that determine whether it works

  1. Use a PDF with selectable text, a DOCX, a DOC or a TXT file.
  2. Keep the file below 5 MB.
  3. Test the file by selecting a sentence or searching for a distinctive word. If neither works, the document is probably an image rather than searchable text.
  4. Do not assume that changing a paper scan’s filename to .pdf makes it readable. Doc Assist says scanned-image PDFs cannot be processed.

If your source is paper, an OCR-capable scanning workflow can create searchable text, but OCR can misread names, decimal points, section numbers and signatures. Proofread the converted file against the page images before relying on an AI response.

Privacy and data-use questions to answer before uploading

LegalZoom says the original document is stored in its secure documents center and the summary in a secure database. It also says information submitted through Doc Assist may be used to improve product performance, which may include training its own proprietary AI models, and says the data will not train third-party AI tools. Those are the company’s stated practices, not an independent security audit.

LegalZoom’s separate AI terms advise against uploading highly sensitive information or information describing or obtained from people under 18. They also state that the AI services are not intended to process attorney-client privileged information. The terms page was last updated December 16, 2024; check the live terms and current retention, access and deletion controls before each sensitive upload.

Geography and legal scope

The FAQ says Doc Assist is unavailable outside the United States and is built for English-language agreements intended for use within the United States. A clear explanation of a clause is not evidence that the clause has the same effect under another country’s law or in another US state. If the document is governed by a different jurisdiction, use the summary only to prepare questions for locally qualified counsel.

LegalZoom’s Claude plugin: a contract-risk workflow with an attorney path

The marketplace listing for the LegalZoom plugin for Claude describes review of PDF, DOCX or pasted contract text. It can classify the agreement, extract its governing jurisdiction and examine liability, intellectual property, confidentiality and payment provisions. Its red/yellow/green framework is a prioritization aid: a red flag means “inspect and escalate,” not “this clause is illegal.”

The listing says the analysis is not legal advice and may refer a matter to an attorney when professional expertise is needed. In a February 24, 2026 company announcement, LegalZoom described a connector that can pass Claude’s analysis and conversation context to an independent attorney network. Because that description comes from the company, review the connector’s current eligibility, data-sharing and service terms before sending a real client, employment or business document.

Professional tools: why the audience label matters

Microsoft Legal Agent

Microsoft positions Legal Agent inside Word for legal professionals. Its documented uses include contract review, redlining, playbook alignment and clause analysis, with outputs that can link to source language. That traceability is valuable because a reviewer can inspect the exact sentence rather than trusting a paraphrase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same documentation lists limits that matter to every reader: output may be inaccurate or incomplete; citations may be wrong; the agent is not jurisdiction-aware by default; it does not incorporate live legal databases or recent legal changes; and it can miss clauses or nuance. A professional workflow therefore treats each generated suggestion as a draft for a qualified reviewer, not as an automated approval.

OpenAI Astra for Law

OpenAI announced Astra for Law as a foundation for law firms and legal-technology companies, with initial access for selected law firms. In a 2026 report, OpenAI compared the professional configuration at its highest reasoning effort with GPT-6 Astra using web search alone on a 200-question private validation set from Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench:

Reported measure Astra for Law GPT-6 Astra with web search alone
Overall correctness check 54.0% of 200 questions 38.7% of 200 questions
Relative improvement reported by OpenAI 40% Comparison baseline
Case-law-focused questions 24% more reference cases found Baseline for the comparison

These are OpenAI-reported results for a professional legal configuration, not a general consumer accuracy score, a guarantee that an answer to your contract is correct, or an independent cross-product ranking. A benchmark on legal-research questions also does not measure whether a consumer summary captured every exception in a lease or indemnity clause.

A safe, repeatable workflow for using AI on a document

The following process keeps the tool in an explanatory role and creates an audit trail for a lawyer or decision-maker.

  1. Define the decision. Write down the document type, the governing-law or jurisdiction clause if visible, your deadline and the exact question you need answered. “Explain this contract” is less useful than “What triggers automatic renewal, and how many days’ notice ends it?”
  2. Check eligibility and terms. Confirm accepted file types, size limits, language, geographic availability, retention, model-training use, human access and deletion controls. If the terms warn against privileged or highly sensitive information, do not upload that information. Redact account numbers, government identifiers, medical details and unrelated personal data when they are not needed for the question.
  3. Prepare a readable source. Use selectable text. If OCR was required, compare names, numbers, dates, section labels and punctuation with the original pages. Include every referenced exhibit, schedule and addendum that affects the clause you are asking about.
  4. Request a grounded first pass. Ask for a neutral summary, then require the tool to quote or identify the exact section supporting each material answer. Tell it to separate “the document states” from “an inference” and to say when the text is silent.
  5. Interrogate high-impact provisions separately. Ask individual questions about payment, auto-renewal, termination, notice, liability caps, indemnity, intellectual property, confidentiality, non-compete or non-solicit language, dispute forum, arbitration, governing law, data use and deadlines. Narrow questions make omissions easier to spot.
  6. Verify against the original. Open the cited section and check defined terms, exceptions, “notwithstanding” language, cross-references, attachments, dates, amounts and whether the answer silently assumed a fact. Search the document for every defined term used in the response.
  7. Test for contradictions. Ask the tool to list clauses that could conflict, such as a short termination right paired with a long notice period, or a liability cap with a carve-out. Then read both provisions yourself; an AI-generated contradiction is a lead for review, not a finding.
  8. Record uncertainty and escalate. Mark answers as verified, ambiguous, unsupported by the text or needing legal advice. Take the original document, the relevant excerpts and your question list to a qualified lawyer before signing, waiving a right, accepting unusual liability or allowing a deadline to pass.

A prompt pattern that improves traceability

Adapt this request to the tool’s interface:

Read only the document I provided. First list the parties, governing-law clause, effective date, termination date, payment amounts and defined terms. For each answer, quote the supporting sentence and identify its section. Then answer these questions separately. Label each statement as “document text,” “inference,” or “not stated.” Do not give legal advice or assume facts not in the document. Flag contradictions, missing referenced exhibits and clauses that a qualified lawyer should review.

For a follow-up, ask: Recheck your answer about [the clause] against the full document, including exceptions and cross-references. If the text does not resolve the question, say “not stated” and identify what additional fact or document is needed. Variables belong in the prompt you send, not in an unverified conclusion.

What to verify clause by clause

Parties, authority and definitions

Confirm legal names, addresses, entity types, signatory authority and every capitalized term. A summary that calls a party “the customer” can hide the fact that an affiliate, guarantor or parent company is also bound.

Money and performance

Check price, currency, taxes, milestones, late fees, expenses, acceptance criteria, service levels and the exact event that triggers payment. Compare the numbers in the body with schedules, order forms and exhibits.

Term, renewal and termination

Identify the start date, initial term, automatic-renewal window, notice method, cure period and effects of termination. Look for a separate survival clause that keeps confidentiality, payment, license or dispute provisions active after termination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Risk allocation

Read limitation-of-liability caps together with exclusions and carve-outs. Review indemnity triggers, defense-control language, insurance requirements, warranties and disclaimers as one group; a cap may not apply to every category of loss.

Ownership, confidentiality and data

Determine who owns pre-existing materials, work product, feedback, inventions and derivative works. Check confidentiality definitions, permitted disclosures, return or deletion duties, security commitments, data-processing roles and any right to use submitted information.

Disputes and governing law

Record governing law, venue, arbitration rules, jury-waiver language, class-action waivers, attorneys’ fees and notice addresses. These provisions can control where and how a dispute proceeds even when the business relationship is elsewhere.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • The tool rejects the file. Confirm that text can be selected, convert the document to a supported format, reduce it below the service’s size limit and remove unnecessary pages. OCR a scan only after checking the converted text.
  • The summary sounds confident but cites nothing. Require section numbers and quotations. Treat uncited claims as unverified until you find them in the source.
  • A cross-reference is missing. Upload or paste the referenced exhibit, policy or schedule, then repeat the question. A clause cannot be understood reliably in isolation when it incorporates another document.
  • The answer conflicts with the contract. Copy both relevant clauses into a focused question and ask the tool to explain the conflict without choosing a winner. Have counsel interpret the result.
  • The document is outside the stated jurisdiction or language. Stop treating the output as a reliable legal explanation. Use it, at most, to identify passages for a lawyer who works in the governing jurisdiction.
  • Confidentiality is uncertain. Do not upload privileged or highly sensitive material to a service whose terms warn against it. Use redaction, an approved enterprise environment or a human attorney-review path with terms you understand.
  • You need a decision, not a summary. A lawyer should review when the outcome could affect signing, employment, housing, immigration, litigation, significant money, regulated data or a deadline.

How to decide whether AI is enough for the first pass

Use a consumer document assistant when the file is within its stated format and size limits, the matter is US-oriented and your immediate goal is orientation: finding obligations, dates, clauses and questions. Keep the document non-privileged and suitable for the service’s data terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a professional legal workflow when a law firm needs controlled access, source-linked analysis, redlines, playbook checks, matter management and a qualified reviewer who can validate the result. The presence of a legal-specific product does not remove the need for that reviewer.

Skip AI as the deciding authority when the document is urgent, high-value, jurisdiction-specific, disputed, ambiguous after verification or likely to involve privilege. Bring the original and your marked questions to counsel. The most productive use of AI in that situation is preparation: it can help you locate language and organize issues so paid legal time starts with a clearer record.
