Use AI as an evidence-triage system: collect network and service telemetry, establish normal behavior, flag meaningful deviations, correlate related events, and give engineers a testable hypothesis. An anomaly is not automatically a fault, and a model’s suggested cause is not confirmed until an operator verifies it. Start with human-reviewed recommendations; add automated changes only when the action, safeguards, rollback, and success measure are clearly defined.
What AI monitoring does—and what it does not do
Telecom networks generate performance indicators, alarms, logs, traces, configuration records, topology information, and service-level signals. AI-assisted monitoring analyzes selected parts of this evidence to help operations teams notice unusual behavior and narrow down where to investigate. Depending on the scope, it may support anomaly detection, event correlation, performance forecasting, fault localization, or root-cause analysis.
These functions answer different questions. Anomaly detection asks whether observed behavior departs from an expected pattern. Correlation asks whether separate alarms, counters, logs, or events may be related. Root-cause analysis attempts to identify the likely failing element or underlying cause. A prediction estimates a future change or degradation. None of those outputs alone proves that a fault occurred, explains it conclusively, or shows that a proposed fix is safe.

Think of the system as decision support for network operations, not a replacement for network engineering or incident control. The useful outcome is not simply a new alert: it is a more focused investigation, supported by evidence and checked against the service impact.

Build the workflow around a service or operational problem
Before selecting a model or buying a platform, identify what the team needs to detect and what it will do with the result. “Monitor network performance” is too broad to configure well. Define the network domain, affected service, observable symptom, relevant time window, and team responsible for investigating an alert.
Choose an initial scope
Pick one bounded use case, such as detecting an unusual performance change in a particular network domain or helping investigators connect related alarms. Specify the service or network elements in scope and the symptoms that matter to users or operators. The sources describe performance monitoring and KPI dashboards, but do not establish one universal set of telecom KPIs; the right indicators depend on the network domain and service.
Write down what counts as a useful alert. For example, an alert might need to identify the affected area or service, show the supporting telemetry, and link to the relevant incident workflow. Avoid treating a large volume of detected deviations as success. The operator needs to know whether the signal is timely and actionable, and whether it helps distinguish service-impacting events from expected variation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Define the decision the alert should support
Decide whether the first release should notify an engineer, rank investigation hypotheses, recommend a bounded response, or execute an approved action. These are different levels of authority. Beginning with an alert or recommendation gives the team a chance to assess the signal and gather evidence before a system can alter network behavior.
- Record the owner of each alert type and the expected investigation path.
- Define which service measure or operational outcome will be checked after investigation or intervention.
- Identify actions that require formal approval, change control, or rollback planning.
- Keep the initial scope small enough that engineers can review alerts and provide useful feedback.
Collect evidence that gives the model context
A model cannot infer a reliable operating picture from a metric in isolation. A single KPI deviation may have multiple explanations. The useful input set depends on the use case, but can include performance counters and KPIs, fault alarms, configuration-management data, logs, traces, topology, network-function data, management-system records, and relevant infrastructure or service events.
Vendor descriptions illustrate how varied these inputs can be. Samsung describes configuration, fault, and performance management data, along with trace analytics. Jio describes RAN counters and logs and data from network functions and management systems. Nokia describes multi-domain network and service data. These examples are capability descriptions from the vendors, not proof that every deployment has access to each source or that the sources are automatically compatible.

Make the evidence usable together
Inventory each data source before connecting it. For each feed, record what it represents, which domain or elements it covers, how it is identified, when it is produced, and who controls access. Align timestamps and identifiers across sources as far as the available systems allow. If an alarm, counter, and configuration record cannot be associated with the same element or time period, the system may be unable to correlate them reliably.
Topology and configuration context help put observations in relation to network elements and changes. Logs and traces can add detail around an event; alarms and performance counters can show what changed and where. These sources have different roles, so avoid assuming that one data stream can stand in for all the others.
Check data quality before interpreting alerts
Missing or delayed telemetry can look like a network event, hide a real change, or leave the system without enough evidence to rank hypotheses. Track whether feeds arrive as expected and whether identifiers, timestamps, and coverage remain consistent. Record changes to configuration and data pipelines so operators can distinguish a change in the network from a change in what the monitoring system can see.
Keep access and governance in scope from the outset. Confirm which teams are authorized to provide and use each data source, and whether the deployment can meet the operator’s security and data-handling requirements. Multi-vendor claims should be tested against the operator’s actual interfaces, data rights, and deployment constraints.
Establish a baseline and detect meaningful deviations
Once the signals are available and contextualized, analytics can help identify patterns that differ from expected behavior. A baseline gives the system a reference for deciding whether an observation is unusual; the relevant reference depends on the selected KPI, service, domain, and operating context. Statistical or machine-learning analytics may be used for anomaly detection or forecasting, but the supplied product descriptions do not specify a universal method or prove how well a method performs in a particular operator network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlan for the possibility that ordinary operational history will not contain enough examples of rare failures to train or validate a model. A peer-reviewed survey published in December 2023 discusses the problem of production failures being too infrequent for sufficient training data, and describes simulating a production-like test network to generate pseudo-network failures for training. Simulation is one possible way to add examples; it does not establish that a model trained on simulated events will transfer accurately to live conditions. Validate that transfer before using its outputs to guide operational decisions.

Separate unusual behavior from a confirmed incident
An anomaly is a candidate signal, not a verdict. The system should provide enough context for an engineer to see what changed, where it changed, and which evidence supports the alert. If the signal cannot be explained or tied to an operational question, it may not be useful even if it is statistically unusual.
Set up an alert-triage process that records whether an alert was relevant, whether it corresponded to a confirmed incident, and what evidence was missing or misleading. Review false alarms and missed incidents as part of operating the system. Do not use an unverified alert count or a vendor’s capability statement as evidence of detection quality.
Correlate events to narrow the investigation
After identifying an unusual signal, look for related evidence across the relevant elements and domains. Correlation can connect alarms, performance changes, logs, traces, configuration changes, and infrastructure events into a more useful diagnostic path. A set of events occurring near the same time may be related, but temporal proximity alone does not establish cause.
Ask the analytics system to present a ranked hypothesis or investigation path that an engineer can verify, rather than treating the first suggested cause as confirmed. A useful diagnostic view should expose the evidence behind its ranking: which signals changed, what elements are implicated, and how the proposed explanation relates to the observed service impact. The operator still needs to test whether that explanation fits the network and incident.
Use domain context to avoid misleading correlations
Cross-domain correlation is especially relevant when a service depends on several network or infrastructure layers. Jio describes cross-domain event correlation and RAN counter and log analysis; Samsung and Nokia describe alarm correlation and root-cause analysis. Those descriptions show the types of capabilities offered, not a guarantee that correlations will be correct in every topology or operating environment.
Keep network topology, configuration changes, and service context available to the investigators. They can help distinguish a likely common cause from unrelated alarms or concurrent changes. If evidence is incomplete, make that uncertainty visible rather than presenting a specific root cause as established.

Validate the diagnosis and choose a safe response
When the system produces an alert or hypothesis, the operations team should check it against the available evidence and its own network knowledge. Confirm which elements and services are affected, whether the change is real, and whether related alarms, logs, configuration records, or infrastructure events support the explanation. If the evidence does not fit, update the incident assessment instead of forcing it to match the model’s suggestion.
Start with human-reviewed recommendations or bounded, reversible actions. Before a response is applied, define who may authorize it, what guardrails apply, how to roll it back, and what service measure will show whether it helped. Afterward, monitor both the intended outcome and any unintended effects. A recommendation should not become an automatic change merely because the platform can execute it.
Nokia and Samsung describe automated or closed-loop response capabilities on their product pages. Those product descriptions do not establish that every possible action is safe or appropriate in every operator environment. Operators should set the scope of any automation according to their own risk controls and change processes.
Increase automation only when controls are explicit
For any closed-loop action, document the trigger, authorized action, affected scope, approval policy, rollback method, and post-action check. Include a way to stop or reverse the action if the observed result is unexpected. Keep a record of what the analytics system recommended and what an operator or automation actually changed, so the outcome can be assessed afterward.
If the action cannot be bounded, reversed, or measured, keep it as a recommendation for an engineer to review. The purpose of automation is to improve a defined operational response, not to turn uncertainty in an anomaly score into an uncontrolled network change.

Monitor the monitoring system
AI-assisted monitoring itself needs operational checks. Network configuration changes, new data sources, delayed feeds, or shifts in normal operating behavior can affect whether alerts remain useful. Track telemetry completeness and timeliness, changes in alert relevance, confirmed incidents the system did not surface, and whether recommended or approved actions improved the intended service measure.

There is no universal threshold for acceptable false alarms, missed events, or model drift established by the sources here. Set operator-specific review criteria for the use case, then revisit them as the network and service change. Keep model outputs, evidence, operator decisions, and outcomes connected enough to investigate a poor alert or a missed incident.
- Check data arrival, coverage, timestamps, and identifiers.
- Review alerts that engineers dismiss, confirm, or cannot investigate because evidence is missing.
- Compare suggested causes with incident findings, while distinguishing a plausible hypothesis from a verified root cause.
- Check the service measure after any response and record whether it changed as intended.
- Reassess the system after material configuration, topology, or data-source changes.
Where NWDAF fits in a 5G architecture
NWDAF, the Network Data Analytics Function, is a 5G Core analytics function; it is not a generic name for every AI monitoring platform. Nokia describes its own NWDAF implementation as collecting data from 5G Core functions, analyzing it, and supplying insights to authorized consumers. Nokia states that its implementation complies with 3GPP specifications for the 5G Standalone Core. That is a description of Nokia’s implementation, not a claim that every analytics system is an NWDAF or that all products have identical conformance.
A December 2023 IEICE survey discusses NWDAF in the mobile-core context and AI functionality related to O-RAN and the RAN. For release-specific interfaces or conformance requirements, consult current normative 3GPP and O-RAN documents; the cited material does not support detailed release-specific claims. ITU-T E.475, dated January 2020, lists subjects including network log-based anomaly detection, network configuration data analytics, prediction of network performance degradations, and network fault localization. Its reviewed contents page supports those topic descriptions, not detailed implementation requirements.
Examples of vendor-described capabilities
The following examples show how vendors position analytics and assurance capabilities. They are not a ranking, independent performance comparison, or recommendation. Product pages establish what each vendor says its offering can do; they do not provide standardized, independently measured comparisons of detection accuracy, cost, integration effort, or operational outcomes.
| Offering | Capabilities described by its vendor | What to verify in your environment |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung VISTA-NetAIr / NetLiner | Samsung describes analysis of configuration, fault, and performance data; anomaly detection, alarm correlation, root-cause analysis, and trace analytics. | Confirm the data sources and interfaces available for your network, the evidence shown for a diagnosis, and how findings enter existing incident workflows. |
| Jio ATOM | Jio describes machine-learning anomaly detection, KPI dashboards, RAN counter and log analysis, and cross-domain event correlation. | Test coverage for the domains in scope, how counters and logs are associated with elements, and whether alert explanations support operator verification. |
| HCLTech TNAS | HCLTech describes analytics across network, cloud, OSS/OAM, streaming, and enterprise sources, with NWDAF support and anomaly detection and forecasting capabilities. | Validate source compatibility, multi-domain coverage, data governance, and what NWDAF support means for the deployment and interfaces you require. |
| Nokia Assurance Center / NWDAF | Nokia describes multi-domain assurance features including performance monitoring, fault management, root-cause analysis, prediction, and closed-loop operations. Its NWDAF page describes a 5G Core analytics function. | Check which capabilities apply to the specific product and deployment, what controls govern any closed-loop action, and whether the intended 5G Core architecture is supported. |
Vendor-described scope is only a starting point. The cited pages do not provide fair, comparable scores for alert quality, total cost, integration effort, or measured operational outcomes. Any shortlist should therefore be evaluated against the operator’s own interfaces, services, controls, and incident process.
Evaluate a platform with an operator-specific proof of concept
A proof of concept should test more than whether a dashboard displays data or a model can produce an alert. Use representative data and scenarios for the intended network domain, then assess whether the output helps an engineer reach and verify a diagnosis. Include difficult cases such as incomplete telemetry or changes in configuration so the team can see how the system communicates uncertainty.
- Coverage: Does it address the required network domains, service signals, and operational systems?
- Data and interfaces: Can it consume the required sources, and are data access and ownership acceptable?
- Multi-vendor operation: Does it work with the actual vendor mix and interfaces in scope, rather than relying on a general positioning claim?
- Diagnostic evidence: Can engineers inspect the signals and relationships behind a detected anomaly or proposed cause?
- Deployment and timing: Where is analysis performed, and does the deployment meet the operator’s latency and operational constraints?
- Workflow fit: Can alerts and findings connect to the existing OSS/OAM and incident-management processes?
- Operator controls: Can teams review recommendations, set authorization boundaries, and stop or roll back actions?
- Security and governance: Are access, data handling, and deployment constraints compatible with operator requirements?
- Measured results: Are alert relevance, missed incidents, investigation usefulness, and service outcomes evaluated in the operator’s own conditions?
Use the evaluation to distinguish a feature claim from evidence that the feature works for the intended workflow. Ask for operator-specific references where available, but do not substitute a vendor claim or an isolated demonstration for measured performance in the target environment.

A practical implementation sequence
- Choose one operational use case. Name the domain, service, symptom, owner, and decision that the analytics should support.
- Select a limited set of indicators. Choose operator-relevant KPIs and service measures for that use case; there is no universal KPI set established here.
- Inventory the evidence. Identify available counters, alarms, logs, traces, configuration and topology context, and service or infrastructure events.
- Check data readiness. Verify coverage, timestamps, identifiers, access rights, and expected feed behavior before interpreting model output.
- Establish a baseline and review anomalies. Determine what deviations are useful for the selected use case, and have engineers assess whether alerts correspond to meaningful events.
- Correlate evidence and verify hypotheses. Use contextual data to narrow the investigation, then confirm the likely cause through operator review.
- Apply a controlled response. Begin with recommendations or bounded reversible actions, and check the target service measure after the response.
- Review results and adjust. Examine false alarms, missed incidents, data-quality issues, and operational outcomes; revise the scope or evidence when needed.
- Consider automation selectively. Add closed-loop actions only with explicit authorization, safeguards, rollback, and outcome monitoring.
