Use AI as a fast evidence-handling assistant—not as an autonomous security judge. Build a complete inventory of the dependencies you actually build and deploy, attach authoritative advisory and exploit data to each finding, then let AI summarize, compare, explain and draft work for a human to verify. An affected package version is a warning signal; it does not by itself prove that your application is exploitable.
What AI should and should not do in dependency security
AI is most useful after your security process has reliable inputs. It can read an advisory, preserve its identifier, compare a vulnerable range with a lockfile, explain technical impact in plain language, identify missing evidence, group duplicates and draft a remediation issue or pull request. Those tasks reduce repetitive triage while leaving the risk decision auditable.
AI should not invent an installed version, merge conflicting advisories without showing the conflict, infer exploitability from a version string, or assign a final priority from a single generated score. A fluent answer is not a source of truth. Require the model to distinguish cited facts from inference, list unknowns and retain links or document names for every material claim. A person who owns the service must approve the priority and the change.

1. Build an inventory that matches production
A scanner can only assess components it can identify. Start with the repository’s lockfiles and dependency graph, and generate a software bill of materials (SBOM) for build outputs. Include direct and transitive packages, operating-system packages where they are part of a container or image, and the exact artifacts deployed to each environment.
Collect every ecosystem in use
- Capture the native manifest and lockfile for each language or package manager.
- Generate an SBOM from the build or image, not only from a developer workstation.
- Record package name, ecosystem, version, checksum or other stable identifier, and the artifact or service that contains it.
- Keep separate inventories for development, test and production when their dependency sets differ.
- Run checks periodically or continuously so a new release or rebuilt image cannot bypass review.
ENISA describes SBOM-driven periodic or continuous checking and gives tools such as grype and osv-scanner as examples. GitHub documentation explains that Dependabot alerts are based on a repository’s dependency graph. Those examples illustrate two different inventory paths; neither removes the need to verify what is actually deployed.
Reconcile build and deployment
Pin the inventory record to a build identifier, image digest or release. A lockfile may show what a build resolved, while a production image can contain additional operating-system libraries or a different layer. Compare the SBOM or package listing from the deployed artifact with the repository record and investigate any difference before accepting a clean scan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Make ownership visible
Every component should map to a repository, service and responsible team. Without ownership, an AI-generated ranked list becomes an unworked queue. Store the first-seen date, current status and target release alongside the component record.
2. Normalize advisory evidence before asking AI to interpret it
For each finding, preserve the raw record and create a normalized view. Do not let a language model silently collapse two records that disagree about an affected range or fixed release.
Minimum fields for a finding
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Component identity | Package name, ecosystem and the exact installed version. |
| Advisory identity | CVE, GHSA, OSV or maintainer identifier, including aliases. |
| Affected range | The vulnerable versions as stated by the advisory source. |
| Severity | CVSS vector and score when supplied, plus the source and version of that score. |
| Exploit signal | EPSS estimate, known-exploitation catalog membership or other dated evidence; record when the signal was observed. |
| Fix information | Fixed version, patched branch or maintainer mitigation, if one exists. |
| Provenance | Advisory source, retrieval date and the manifest, lockfile, SBOM component or deployed artifact that established the installed version. |
| Uncertainty | Missing fields, conflicting ranges, disputed severity or an unverified deployment match. |
Ask AI to display this provenance in its output. If two sources disagree, have it quote both ranges and explain the discrepancy for a human to resolve. Keep the original advisory text available for audit rather than storing only a generated summary.
3. Enrich each alert with context that changes its priority
Severity is a useful baseline, but it is not a deployment verdict. Add independent signals before ordering work.

Exploitability and threat evidence
Check whether exploitation is merely theoretical, predicted by an exploit-likelihood model such as EPSS, or observed and listed in a known-exploited catalog. Record the date and source because these signals change. A credible active-threat indication can move a finding ahead of a higher-scoring issue with no evidence of use.
Reachability and execution
Determine whether the vulnerable function is imported, called, reachable from an exposed endpoint or executed in the deployed configuration. Static call-graph analysis, runtime traces, feature flags and configuration review can all contribute. Absence of proof is not proof of safety: record “reachability unknown” rather than converting an incomplete analysis into a low priority.
Exposure and business impact
Identify whether the component runs in an internet-facing service, a privileged build system, a customer-data path or an isolated development tool. Consider confidentiality, integrity and availability consequences, regulatory obligations and the value of the affected data. The same library defect can have different urgency in a public API and an offline test utility.
Fix availability and change risk
A maintainer-supported fixed release makes prompt remediation feasible. A breaking major upgrade, an unmaintained package or the absence of a fix may require a mitigation and a planned migration. Estimate testing and rollout risk without allowing a difficult upgrade to disappear from the queue.

A practical prioritization matrix
Use a documented threshold agreed by the security and service teams. The matrix below keeps the decision explainable; it is not a substitute for judgment and should not be replaced by one model-generated number.
| Axis | Questions for triage | How it changes priority |
|---|---|---|
| Severity and impact | What can the flaw affect, and how serious is the consequence? | Sets a baseline, but does not establish that this deployment is exploitable. |
| Exploit evidence | Is exploitation known or predicted, and how current and credible is the signal? | Strong active-threat evidence increases urgency. |
| Reachability and use | Is the affected code imported, reachable or executed, and is the component in a deployed artifact? | Separates a potentially affected version from a practically exposed application. |
| Fix availability | Is a fixed version available, and what upgrade path does the maintainer recommend? | A clear patch supports rapid action; no patch calls for mitigation and tracking. |
| Exposure and business context | Is the service public or handling sensitive or high-value data? | Raises the organizational impact of the same technical defect. |
| Remediation cost and change risk | Is the update routine, or does it require a disruptive migration? | Helps sequence work and plan controls without silently accepting risk. |
A sensible first pass elevates findings that combine strong exploit evidence, high impact, an available fix and presence in deployed or reachable code. Then account for business context and the risk of the proposed change. Keep lower-ranked findings visible, assign an owner and give every exception an expiry or review date.
4. Give AI bounded, evidence-based jobs
Summarize an advisory without losing meaning
Provide the advisory text or an approved source extract and request a short summary that retains the identifier, affected range, attack preconditions, impact, fixed versions, publication date and source. Instruct the model to mark anything not stated in the source as unknown.

Compare the alert with the installed dependency
Supply the relevant lockfile or SBOM entry and ask which file establishes the installed version, whether it falls inside the affected range, and what evidence is still missing. This avoids the common error of treating a manifest’s broad constraint as the resolved production version.
Draft a triage note
Have AI produce a structured note containing severity, exploit evidence, production status, reachability evidence, fix availability, uncertainty, proposed owner and next action. A reviewer can then approve, amend or reject each field rather than editing an opaque paragraph.
Prepare an upgrade plan or pull request
Ask for the smallest maintainer-supported upgrade, expected transitive changes, release-note concerns, test commands and rollback considerations. AI may draft a security-update pull request, but a developer must inspect the diff, confirm the resolved versions and run the normal test and security suites.
Group and de-duplicate findings
Use AI to cluster aliases for the same advisory, identify repeated alerts across images and flag contradictory ranges. Require it to show the records it grouped so that a false merge can be reversed.
A prompt pattern that keeps the model honest
Using only the supplied advisory, lockfile or SBOM entry, and deployment notes, produce a triage table with: cited evidence, inference, unknowns, affected range, installed version, exploit signal, reachability, production exposure, fixed version, proposed priority, owner and next action. Quote the source identifier for every factual claim. Do not declare the application exploitable unless the evidence demonstrates reachability and the required attack conditions. Flag conflicts instead of resolving them silently.
Do not send secrets, private keys, customer data or sensitive source code to an AI service that is not approved for that data. Minimize repository context to what is needed for the question and retain an audit record of the prompt, inputs and human decision.
5. An end-to-end operating procedure
- Inventory. Generate dependency graphs and SBOMs from reproducible builds, include every package ecosystem and deployed artifact, and assign each component to a service owner.
- Scan. Run the approved scanners on the repository and production artifacts. Capture the raw advisory record and the retrieval date.
- Normalize. Confirm the package identity, resolved version, affected range, advisory aliases, severity, exploit data, fixed release and provenance. Mark missing or conflicting evidence.
- Enrich. Add reachability, runtime use, internet exposure, data sensitivity, deployment status, fix availability and estimated change risk.
- Ask AI for bounded analysis. Request a cited summary, discrepancy list, triage note and upgrade plan. Keep evidence and inference in separate columns.
- Review and rank. A service owner and security reviewer apply the documented threshold. Do not accept a model-generated score as the sole rule.
- Assign and schedule. Create an issue or pull request with an owner, due date, target release and any temporary controls. Give exceptions an expiry or review date.
- Remediate. Prefer the maintainer-supported fixed version. Review release notes and the complete dependency diff, then run the project’s normal tests, integration checks and security scans.
- Verify the result. Rebuild the artifact, rescan its inventory and confirm that the deployed version is the one tested. Update the SBOM and record the disposition.
- Review outcomes. Examine backlog age, assignment time, closure time, high-priority remediation and recurring causes, then adjust ownership, thresholds and automation.
Reachability analysis: useful evidence, not a magic exemption
Reachability can lower urgency when a vulnerable code path is demonstrably absent, but it should be evidence-based. Check imports and call paths, build-time feature selection, configuration and runtime telemetry. For dynamically loaded modules, plugins or reflection-heavy frameworks, static analysis may be incomplete. Document the analysis boundary and schedule a recheck when the service changes.
Even when a vulnerable function is not currently reached, keep the finding visible if the package is shipped in a public artifact or can be activated by configuration. A future feature flag, plugin or input path can change the conclusion without changing the package version.

Remediation, mitigation and verification
When a fixed release exists
Use the maintainer’s supported version where practical. Inspect API and transitive changes, run regression and security tests, rebuild the artifact and rescan the resulting inventory. Close the finding only after the deployed result—not merely a merged lockfile—contains the fix.
When no safe upgrade is immediately possible
Document compensating controls such as disabling an affected feature, restricting network access, adding input validation or isolating the service. State who accepted the residual risk, what evidence supports the mitigation, and the date for reassessment. A mitigation is not a permanent disappearance of the alert.
When the alert is not applicable
Record the exact reason: for example, the affected package is not in the deployed artifact, the vulnerable function is unreachable under reviewed configurations, or the advisory’s version range does not include the resolved version. Preserve the supporting file, analysis date and reviewer so the decision can be revisited.
Measure the management loop
Track open alerts by owner and priority, age distribution, time to assign, time to remediate, fixed-version availability, high-priority findings closed and recurring dependency causes. Measure whether production inventories are current and whether exceptions are reviewed on time. These indicators show process health; they do not prove that AI alone reduced risk or that a scanner found every vulnerability.
Use trends to find structural fixes: pinning or lockfile drift, unsupported packages, slow ownership handoffs, missing SBOM generation or repeated emergency upgrades. Review thresholds when threat conditions or deployment architecture changes.
Choosing supporting tools without overclaiming coverage
Compare scanners and repository integrations on the package ecosystems and artifact types they support, advisory-source coverage, SBOM import and export, reachability features, production-inventory integration, update-pull-request workflow, policy controls and reporting. Coverage varies. GitHub’s documentation distinguishes its open-source-focused advisory database and osv-scanner from grype‘s emphasis on containers and filesystems; treat those as capability examples, not universal guarantees.
Recommended Free Tools
Use more than one evidence path when the risk justifies it, but reconcile duplicates centrally. A scan complements—rather than replaces—the team’s own inventory, deployment context and ownership process.

Common failure modes and recoveries
Scanning only manifests
Symptom: the report misses packages added by a lockfile, image layer or operating-system base. Recovery: scan resolved lockfiles and built artifacts, generate an SBOM and compare it with production.
Using severity as the entire priority rule
Symptom: every high-CVSS alert is urgent while a known-exploited medium issue waits. Recovery: add exploit evidence, reachability, exposure, fix availability and business impact.
Letting AI fill gaps
Symptom: a polished note asserts a fixed version, exploit path or installed package that the records do not show. Recovery: require citations, an explicit unknowns section and human approval; reject unsupported inferences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssuming “not reachable” means “safe forever”
Symptom: an exception remains open while configuration or code changes. Recovery: record the analysis boundary, monitor changes and set a review date.
Closing after a merge
Symptom: the repository is patched but the running image still contains the old version. Recovery: rebuild, rescan and verify the deployed digest before closure.
Leaving exceptions ownerless
Symptom: lower-priority findings and mitigations age indefinitely. Recovery: assign an owner, expiry or review date and a documented residual-risk decision.
Bottom line
The dependable pattern is inventory, evidence, context, human-reviewed prioritization and verified remediation. AI can make each handoff faster and clearer—summarizing advisories, reconciling versions, exposing unknowns and drafting changes—but only the combination of authoritative data, application reachability, production context and accountable ownership turns an alert into a defensible security decision.
