AI can help you draft a website’s page structure, but a layout that looks plausible on a desktop preview is not automatically usable on a phone. Start by telling the AI who the site serves and what visitors need to do; then inspect the draft at narrow and wider widths, checking content, navigation, images, accessibility, and the primary action. Treat the generated layout as a starting point that needs human review before it is published.

What makes an AI-generated layout work on mobile?

A mobile-ready layout is more than a desktop page compressed to fit a small screen. Its content remains available, its hierarchy is understandable, and its controls can be found and used at narrow widths. Visitors should be able to identify what the page is about, find the information they came for, and complete its main task without needing to decipher tiny text, hidden navigation, or an unexplained pile of stacked sections.

AI is useful for generating an initial hierarchy and suggesting ways to arrange content. It cannot determine, by appearance alone, whether a particular page serves its audience or whether the order and controls make sense in real use. Review the draft as a design proposal: keep what supports the page’s purpose, change what obscures it, and discard elements that add no value.

Responsive web design is a useful default for a new or revised layout. Google Search Central describes it as serving the same HTML code at the same URL across devices while allowing the display to adapt to screen size. Google recommends this pattern because it is the easiest mobile-friendly design pattern to implement and maintain. That does not mean every responsive layout is automatically good: the arrangement, content, behavior, and accessibility still need review.

Set the page’s purpose before prompting AI

A prompt such as “make a modern website homepage” leaves the AI to guess the audience, the job of the page, and what matters most. The result may have familiar-looking sections without a clear reason for any of them. Give the tool enough context to propose an order that follows a visitor’s needs rather than a generic template.

Write down the audience and the main task

Before generating a layout, define three things in plain language:

  • Audience: Who is expected to use this page? Be specific enough to distinguish their needs. “People comparing service options” is more useful than “everyone.”
  • Page purpose: What question does the page answer, or what decision does it support?
  • Primary action: What should a visitor be able to do next? Examples include booking an appointment, finding a location, comparing plans, or contacting an organization. Choose an action that genuinely belongs on the page.

Also note any essential facts, content, or requirements the layout must preserve. If you have existing copy, a required form, legal information, or evidence visitors need to make a decision, tell the AI rather than expecting it to infer those elements.

Ask for hierarchy, not decoration

Request a page outline that makes clear what appears first, what supports it, and what can be lower on the page. A useful starting list might include a header and navigation, a page title and introduction, essential content sections, supporting proof or media, and a clear next action. This is a set of possibilities, not a fixed order: the right sequence depends on what visitors need and on the page’s purpose.

Ask the tool to explain the role of each proposed section and flag any assumptions. That makes it easier to remove filler and spot a missing element. A row of impressive-sounding section names is not a hierarchy unless it shows how each section helps a visitor progress.

Request a mobile-first proposal

Tell the AI to plan for a small screen from the start, not just to shrink its desktop suggestion. Specify which information and action must be easy to find near the beginning, which content is essential, and which supporting material may follow it. Do not ask the AI to hide important content simply because the screen is narrow; request a clearer order or presentation instead.

Here is a prompt structure you can adapt:

Propose a page hierarchy for a website page serving [audience]. The page should help visitors [purpose], and the primary action is [action]. Include these required facts or sections: [required content]. Start with a mobile-first structure: explain what visitors see first on a narrow screen, how they reach the remaining content, and how the layout can adapt at wider widths. For each section, state its purpose. Keep the proposal focused on visitor needs, preserve all required content, and list assumptions or questions rather than inventing facts. Do not treat visual styling as a substitute for a clear hierarchy.

Replace the bracketed phrases with actual information before using the prompt. If the AI returns a page outline without mobile behavior, ask it to describe how the same content should be arranged on a narrow screen and what should change at wider widths.

Review the draft at narrow and wide widths

Generate a draft, then inspect how it behaves at a phone-sized viewport and at wider widths. If the tool provides a preview, use it as an initial check; if you can view the implemented page in a browser, inspect that too. A mockup or preview is not proof that the final page will behave the same way after publication, particularly if a theme, content-management system, or custom implementation will render it.

Look for changes that affect understanding and use, rather than judging the page by whether it looks fashionable. The practical checks below draw on responsive-design principles and accessibility guidance; they are review steps, not results from a test of a particular AI builder.

Check what happens as the width changes

  • Text wrapping: Titles and labels should remain readable and meaningful when they wrap. Watch for a heading broken into awkward fragments or a button whose label becomes difficult to understand.
  • Section order: Confirm that the mobile sequence still tells a coherent story. If the title, explanation, evidence, and action are separated or reordered, ask whether visitors can still understand why the next step matters.
  • Spacing: Check whether sections have enough separation to distinguish them without leaving large empty gaps that push useful information far down the page.
  • Images and other media: Confirm that they fit the available space without obscuring text, distorting their proportions, or forcing a reader to scroll sideways.
  • Primary action: Check that visitors can still recognize the intended next step and reach its control at each width.

If the only available view is a static image, use it to critique hierarchy and content placement, but do not assume it demonstrates actual responsive behavior. The implementation must be checked at different widths once it can be rendered in a browser.

Refine one problem at a time

When something fails, describe the observed problem and ask for a focused change. For example: “At a narrow width, the page title wraps between words in a way that obscures its meaning. Suggest a shorter title treatment while preserving the page purpose.” Or: “The primary action is separated from the explanation that makes it relevant. Propose a mobile order that keeps both understandable.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the revised proposal rather than accepting it automatically. A fix that makes one screen look neater can move an important section too far down, create a confusing order, or remove useful context. Keep a short list of required content and the main task beside the draft so each revision can be checked against the same criteria.

Keep substantive content available on mobile

Google uses the mobile version of a site’s content for mobile-first indexing. Google’s guidance is to make sure mobile users can access the same substantive content and metadata as desktop users. A responsive page typically uses the same HTML and URL across devices while adapting its display, which helps avoid treating the mobile view as a separate, stripped-down page.

Compare the important content on mobile and desktop. The layout can present information differently, but do not assume that content is unimportant just because it sits farther down the mobile page. Check text, headings, links, images, metadata, and any other material that supports the page’s purpose.

Watch for hidden or interaction-dependent information

Pay attention to content that is hidden, blocked, or loaded only after an interaction. Some interface patterns are useful for organizing a long page, but essential information should not become inaccessible to people using the page or to a crawler that cannot perform the interaction. Google’s mobile guidance specifically calls attention to content and resources that are available only after interaction or are otherwise blocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each collapsed panel, tab, menu, or other interactive element, ask what information it contains, whether it is essential, and whether it can be accessed in the relevant mobile experience. Do not assume that a desktop view proves the mobile version exposes the same material. If key content is unavailable until an interaction, investigate how the page actually renders and whether the content remains accessible.

Check metadata as well as visible text. If the mobile and desktop versions are separate implementations, verify that important metadata is not accidentally omitted from one. With a single responsive page, check the resulting page rather than assuming the AI-generated outline accounts for implementation details.

Make navigation and the primary action understandable

Navigation is one of the first places a desktop-oriented layout can become confusing on a phone. A long row of links may not fit; shrinking it can make labels hard to read, and hiding it without a clear way to open it can leave visitors stranded. Review what the page actually presents at narrow widths and whether the controls still communicate their purpose.

  • Can visitors tell which control opens the site navigation?
  • Are link labels specific enough to distinguish destinations?
  • Can a person identify the main action without mistaking it for an ordinary navigation link?
  • Does the mobile order put the most useful destinations where visitors can find them?
  • Can interactive controls be used without relying on a mouse?

A visible call to action is not necessarily a useful one. Check whether its wording says what will happen, whether it appears in context, and whether its destination or next step makes sense. If the AI adds multiple competing buttons, keep only the actions that support the page’s purpose and make their relative importance clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test navigation in the rendered page, not only in the outline. A proposal may say “mobile menu,” but that label does not tell you whether the menu opens, whether its items are reachable, or whether a keyboard user can use it. Those questions depend on the actual implementation.

Check images and alternative text

Images should support the page rather than serve as decoration that displaces its purpose. At narrow widths, inspect whether an image remains legible and useful, whether it crowds nearby text, and whether its placement interrupts the reading order. If the image contains information that matters, make sure visitors can obtain that information without depending on the image alone.

Review alternative text as part of the content, not as a field to leave to an AI by default. For an informative image, its text alternative should convey the relevant information in the context of the page. For a purely decorative image, avoid giving it a description that distracts from the content. A generated description can misidentify an image or state details that are not evident; compare it with the actual image and the purpose it serves.

Also inspect images and other resources that might be blocked or loaded differently on mobile. The page should not lose essential content because a mobile-specific resource fails to load. If an image is the only way a visitor can understand a key point, provide an appropriate textual equivalent.

Review accessibility as part of the layout

A mobile layout can look orderly and still create barriers. Review headings, labels, keyboard operation, assistive-technology access, contrast, and touch interactions as part of evaluating the page. These checks are not a substitute for a complete accessibility evaluation, and a generated design should not be described as compliant based on appearance alone.

Headings and labels

Check that headings describe the content that follows and form an understandable structure. A large, bold line of text is not automatically a useful heading. Form fields and controls should have labels that make their purpose clear; do not rely only on a placeholder or an icon whose meaning is ambiguous.

Keyboard and assistive technology

Use the implemented page to check that interactive elements can be reached and operated with a keyboard, and that focus is visible as a person moves through the page. Menus, expandable controls, forms, and other interactive parts should have understandable names and communicate their state and purpose through the implementation. Check how the page is exposed to assistive technology rather than inferring accessibility from a screenshot.

Contrast and touch use

Review text and control contrast against their backgrounds, especially for small labels and secondary text. Check that touch controls can be selected comfortably and that nearby controls are not so crowded that visitors are likely to activate the wrong one. If something is difficult to distinguish or operate, change the design and verify the result in the page itself.

For accessibility compliance claims, use applicable published accessibility guidance and evaluate the finished implementation against it. WCAG 3.0 is a draft, not a final conformance standard; do not present it as the basis for a claim of conformance. The cited study of generative-AI website tools used JAWS Version 23.0 and checks oriented to WCAG 2.1, but its methods do not establish that every AI-generated layout has the same results.

Turn a generated proposal into an editable page

AI can produce a hierarchy or a design proposal, but whether you can change that structure depends on how the page is implemented. Before relying on a draft, find out whether the headings, sections, navigation, and content can be edited in the tool or system that will host the page. If a problem appears during review, you need a practical way to fix it rather than a layout locked into an image or inaccessible output.

If the page will use a content-management system, check the actual theme and the page it produces at different widths. A platform’s existence or reputation does not establish that a particular theme is mobile-friendly, editable, or accessible. Google’s mobile guidance gives examples of CMS platforms, including Wix and Blogger, but those examples are context, not an endorsement or evidence of AI functionality.

When choosing or configuring an implementation, consider these questions:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can you edit the generated structure and reorder sections when the mobile hierarchy is unclear?
  • Does the finished page adapt across widths while keeping essential content available?
  • Can you inspect and correct navigation, labels, images, and accessibility issues?
  • Can you maintain the page as its content changes, without rebuilding a separate mobile version for every update?

Google explicitly favors responsive design for ease of implementation and maintenance. There is no basis here for a vendor-by-vendor comparison of current AI features, so assess the specific tool, theme, and output you intend to use rather than assuming that a label such as “AI website builder” guarantees a good mobile result.

Decide whether the finished page is worth publishing

Before publishing, judge the page by whether it helps its intended audience, not by whether it looks polished or could pass as a familiar template. Google’s guidance on generative AI warns that producing many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled-content-abuse policy. That concern is about the value and purpose of the content, not simply whether AI was involved.

Ask whether the page answers a real question, provides useful information, and makes its next step clear. Remove sections that exist only because the AI commonly includes them. Correct unsupported or inaccurate claims, fill genuine gaps with verified content, and confirm that the page’s essential material remains accessible on mobile. If the layout is plausible but the content does not help its audience, redesigning the page will not solve the underlying problem.

The study Constructing Websites with Generative AI Tools: The Accessibility of Their Workflows and Products for Users With Disabilities evaluated generated websites with JAWS Version 23.0 and WCAG 2.1-oriented checks. Its reported initial observations included concerns about illogical layout structure and missing standard homepage features. These are observations from that study, not a population statistic and not proof that all generated websites share those problems. They do reinforce why a generated structure should be inspected rather than treated as finished.

A practical pre-publication checklist

Use this checklist on the page that will actually be published, not only on the AI’s outline:

  • The audience, page purpose, and primary action are clear.
  • The page hierarchy supports that purpose rather than copying a generic pattern.
  • The page has been inspected at a phone-sized width and at wider widths.
  • Titles, labels, images, and controls remain understandable as the width changes.
  • Important content and metadata are available in the mobile experience.
  • Essential information is not available only through an interaction that people or crawlers cannot access.
  • Navigation and the primary action work in the rendered page.
  • Images have been reviewed for fit, usefulness, and appropriate alternative text.
  • Headings, labels, keyboard access, assistive-technology access, contrast, and touch interactions have been reviewed.
  • The implementation can be edited to fix issues discovered in review.
  • The finished page provides genuine value to its intended audience.

If any item fails, return to the specific problem, revise the hierarchy or implementation, and inspect the result again. A layout is ready when it works for the page’s users—not merely when the AI has finished generating it.
