AI can help a Christmas campaign explore or produce images, motion, and digital experiences, but it cannot decide what the season should mean to an audience. Start with a human-authored story, use AI for a defined production task, and keep people accountable for the emotional choices and final release.

How can brands use AI in Christmas ads without losing the magic?

Write the human story first. It might center on a reunion, a familiar ritual, generosity between strangers, or the tension of trying to make the season meaningful. Then decide whether AI has a specific job that supports that story. If the team cannot explain how a generated element serves the moment, it may be technology in search of a campaign.

Keep people responsible for the decisions that make the work feel emotionally coherent: what a scene means, whether a character feels believable, how the edit builds toward its key moment, and whether the result fits the brand. Human involvement is not a guarantee of a successful ad; it is a way to keep creative intent and accountability with the people making and approving the work.

1. Define the occasion before the visual treatment

Write a plain-language premise before generating concepts. Name the relationship or seasonal experience at the center, the feeling the audience should recognize, and the role the brand has in the story. This gives the creative team a basis for judging outputs beyond whether they look polished or novel.

2. Give AI a bounded production role

Depending on the campaign, AI might help explore visual directions, create or adapt imagery, produce motion, or support a digital experience. Coca-Cola said its 2024 holiday campaign combined holiday heritage with AI and other digital tools, including AI-enabled films and a digital experience. The company described the work as a new way to present its established Santa imagery: “Until now, we have only presented the 1931 Sundblom Santa in static images, not dynamically,” said Pratik Thakar, Coca-Cola’s Global Head of Generative AI, in the company’s October 2024 campaign announcement. That account documents the company’s approach, not proof that the approach will suit another brand or improve campaign performance.

In its 2025 holiday campaign description, Coca-Cola said it used AI-powered storytelling to celebrate people working behind the scenes and framed human creativity as central. These company accounts show different ways a brand has described using AI in holiday work; they do not provide a controlled comparison of production methods or independent evidence of effectiveness.

3. Review the whole experience, not only individual images

Generated motion can be technically smooth and still make a story hard to follow. Review whether people, objects, and settings remain coherent from shot to shot, and whether movement and pacing make the intended emotion legible. Treat voice, music, and sound as part of the same story: they can reinforce a human moment or make it feel artificial or inconsistent.

4. Test consequential creative with its intended audience

If a campaign decision carries significant brand or reputational risk, test the actual creative with the audience it is meant to reach. Do not substitute assumed audience acceptance for evidence. The available sources do not establish a transparent, representative statistic showing how audiences broadly respond to AI-generated Christmas advertising, nor a general preference for AI or non-AI production.

How should a team compare creative approaches?

There is no evidence here for a universal ranking of AI-assisted and other production methods. Compare the actual options against the campaign’s goals and risks instead:

Decision area Question to ask
Story and emotional fit Does the approach help the audience feel the seasonal moment the campaign is built around?
Visibility of AI Is AI a behind-the-scenes aid, or is synthetic content prominent in the finished ad?
Visual and audio coherence Do characters, objects, movement, voices, and music remain consistent and believable across the work?
Brand fit Does the result fit the brand’s voice, history, and audience expectations?
Human control Who makes the story, casting, editing, and final release decisions?
Transparency Could marking, labeling, or disclosure obligations apply to this content or market?
Evidence Has the team tested the actual creative with its intended audience, rather than relying on assumptions about AI acceptance?

Do AI-generated Christmas adverts need to be labelled?

It depends on the content, the role of the organization, and where the ad is distributed. For campaigns shown in the EU, the European Commission says the AI Act’s Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. That date is the stated application date for the obligations, not a blanket rule that every ad made with AI must carry the same visible label.

Article 50 covers different responsibilities. Providers of systems that generate synthetic audio, images, video, or text must ensure outputs are marked in a machine-readable way and detectable as generated or manipulated, subject to the regulation’s provisions and exceptions. Deployer obligations include disclosure for certain deepfake image, audio, or video content. A separate text provision concerns AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public on matters of public interest; it includes an exception where the text has undergone human review or editorial control and a person holds editorial responsibility. The regulation also limits the manner of disclosure for artistic, creative, satirical, fictional, or analogous works so it does not hamper their display or enjoyment. The details depend on the content and circumstances. See the European Commission’s AI Act Article 50 text and summary and its FAQ on transparency obligations.

The Commission’s FAQ says that, for an advertising organization using an AI system under its authority, the legal person is the deployer; employees acting under that organization’s instructions are not separate deployers. It also explains editorial responsibility in relation to the public-interest text exception. The Commission published a transparency code updated on 31 July 2026; teams should consult the Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content alongside the regulation and FAQ.

For a specific campaign, establish who is acting as provider and deployer, what kind of content is generated or manipulated, where it will appear, and whether an exception is relevant. The information here is general editorial guidance, not a legal assessment of an advertisement. Confirm the current rules, national requirements, and platform policies that apply before publication.
