To use AI for construction progress tracking, capture the site repeatedly with a drone, a 360-degree camera, fixed cameras, or a combination; upload the imagery to a platform; and review its observations against the schedule, BIM model, and field records. Start with a pilot area and a repeatable capture routine. AI can help identify visible work-in-place and flag questions, but it cannot verify work hidden from the camera or replace field checks for consequential decisions.
What AI progress tracking measures—and what it does not
Construction progress platforms use computer vision to interpret images or video and organize visible site conditions into progress information. Depending on the product and project setup, an output may describe work-in-place by location, trade, component, system, stage, or schedule task. Some tools also create a time-stamped visual record that lets a team review site conditions and project events over time.
These outputs are related but not interchangeable. A photographic record documents what was captured; a work-in-place estimate classifies visible installation; and a planned-versus-actual comparison relates observations to project plans or schedule tasks. None alone establishes that all work is complete, compliant, accepted, or eligible for payment. Define which question the team needs answered before selecting a workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Visible work by area or trade: Which installed work can be seen in a captured area?
- Schedule status: How do observed conditions relate to planned tasks, where the platform supports that comparison?
- Coordination record: What did the site look like at a particular time, and what changed between captures?
- Payment or contractual review: What evidence should prompt a closer review? Treat automated observations as leads to verify, not as proof on their own.
How the workflow fits together
1. Define the decision you want to support
Choose a pilot question narrow enough to check in the field. For example, a team might want a recurring view of visible installation by trade in one work area, or a way to compare observed progress with selected schedule tasks. Specify who will use the output and what action it should help them take, such as investigating a possible delay or coordinating the next trade.

Do not assume one platform output will answer every question. If the need is a visual record, prioritize coverage and reliable capture history. If the need is work-in-place reporting or schedule comparison, check the system’s supported classifications and reference-data requirements.
2. Choose a capture method that can see the work
Drone flights can cover rooftops, site-wide conditions, and other aerial views. A 360-degree walkthrough can show interior and ground-level work along a route. Fixed cameras can provide a continuous visual record of selected viewpoints. Some workflows combine these sources; a combination can broaden coverage, but it also adds capture and data-management work.
Match the method to the project’s geometry and the progress question. Aerial imagery cannot reliably show work concealed inside a building, while a walkthrough may not capture broad site conditions. A fixed camera sees only its field of view. In every case, work outside the captured view is outside the system’s direct visual evidence.

For a 360-degree camera, confirm that the selected platform supports the device and file format before buying hardware. Check whether the camera and mounting method suit the actual site and can be used safely and repeatedly. A camera collects imagery; it does not by itself provide AI analysis or progress reporting.
3. Decide whether to provide BIM and schedule data
Product approaches differ. DroneDeploy says its Progress AI can report visible installed work without a BIM model or schedule. OpenSpace says BIM is optional and describes connecting captures to a schedule. Doxel describes comparing captured work-in-place against plans. These are vendor descriptions, not independent comparisons; confirm the requirements for the specific workflow and project.
An imagery-first setup may reduce the reference data needed to begin, but it does not automatically provide the same planned-versus-actual context as a workflow tied to a model or schedule. If you expect task-level comparison, ask which schedule data the platform uses, how tasks are mapped to captured locations, and how updates or corrections are handled.
4. Establish a repeatable capture routine
Choose who captures, which areas and viewpoints are included, how files are uploaded, and who reviews exceptions. Keep the route or coverage as consistent as the site permits so the team can compare periods. Set a cadence that matches the project’s decision needs and practical constraints: the vendor pages reviewed do not establish a universal capture interval.

Record enough context to interpret a capture, including its date and the areas covered. Agree how the team will handle incomplete coverage, blocked views, changed routes, or missing uploads. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee that every relevant condition will be visible to the AI.
Cadence is a project choice rather than a standard number of captures per week. A team may want more frequent imagery when it is monitoring fast-moving work or coordinating near-term activities, while a less frequent rhythm may suit a broader visual record. In either case, decide when the information must be available to influence a decision, then account for capture, upload, processing, and review time. Confirm actual turnaround with the provider; the figures vendors publish are tied to their described workflows and are not universal service guarantees.
5. Review observations and act on exceptions
Use the platform’s report to locate questions: a trade or area that appears behind plan, an unexpected change, or a gap in the visual record. Have the responsible project team member compare the observation with current field conditions and relevant records. Record corrections where the platform allows, and preserve the distinction between the automated observation and the team’s verified status.
For contractual, payment, or safety decisions, verify the material status in the field and follow the project’s established approval process. An image-based estimate can focus attention, but it does not independently confirm concealed work, quality, or acceptance.
What different tools say they provide
The table summarizes vendor-described workflows. Capabilities and turnaround below are claims from the vendors, not findings from a common third-party test.
| Option | Capture and reference inputs | Described output or timing | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| DroneDeploy Progress AI | Vendor says it accepts drone and 360-walk imagery and does not require BIM or a schedule. | Vendor says it reports percent complete by location, trade status by date and area, and installed work across more than 80 trade types. It says reporting is available within two hours of upload. | Confirm supported capture hardware, coverage needs, and whether its output answers the project’s specific progress question. The stated trade count and turnaround are vendor claims. |
| OpenSpace Track | Vendor describes 360 capture, optional BIM, and schedule-connected tracking. | Vendor says structured reports are returned 24–48 hours after capture. | Confirm schedule integration, report scope, and how the project’s model or task structure is used. The stated turnaround is a vendor claim. |
| Doxel | Vendor describes hardhat-mounted 360-degree capture and comparison of captured work-in-place against plans. | Vendor describes measures for trades, systems, and stages. | Confirm plan inputs, supported work categories, capture requirements, and how observations are reviewed. |
| Evercam | Vendor describes combining fixed cameras, photos, video, 360 walkthroughs, and drone media. | Vendor describes a time-stamped visual record for reviewing progress and project events. | Confirm which connectors and capture sources are relevant to the project and whether the output includes the progress analysis needed. |
| oculai | Vendor describes planned-versus-actual monitoring and lists Primavera P6, MS Project, and Asta Powerproject as compatible tools. | Vendor describes workload metrics and automated daily reports. | Confirm the exact schedule connection, required inputs, report contents, and review process for the project. |
No common independent accuracy or pricing comparison is established for these options. The product descriptions above should be treated as starting points for questions and a project-specific demonstration, not as proof that one tool will perform better on a particular site.
For teams without a drone or pilot, DroneDeploy describes a services network that can capture and deliver processed maps, photos, and models. Availability, service scope, and terms need to be confirmed directly. A capture service may reduce the need to buy equipment or provide in-house flight staff, but it does not remove the need to decide what coverage the project needs or who will review the resulting progress information.

How to compare platforms and workflows
Ask each provider the same questions using a representative area and the progress decision the team actually needs to make. This makes differences in inputs, visibility, reporting, and operations easier to identify than a feature-list comparison alone.
Recommended Free Tools
- Coverage: Can the proposed drone, 360 walkthrough, fixed-camera, or combined approach see the work areas and stages that matter? How are occluded or inaccessible areas represented?
- Reference requirements: Is BIM required, optional, or unused? Is a project schedule required for the desired comparison? What mapping or setup is needed?
- Output granularity: Are results organized by location, trade, component, system, or schedule task? Which categories are actually supported for the project’s work?
- Turnaround and review: When are reports available, and which observations receive human review? How are corrections and exceptions recorded?
- Project-system fit: Which schedule formats and project-management integrations are available for the exact project setup? Vendors describe integrations or connectors, but verify the specific connection rather than assuming every configuration is supported.
- Operating burden: Account for equipment, capture staffing and training, processing, connectivity, initial setup, and recurring service charges. Obtain project-specific quotes; vendor pages do not provide a consistent independent price comparison.
- Data handling: Ask how imagery and reports are accessed by the project team and how they fit existing project records. Confirm the provider’s terms and project requirements directly.
Separate one-time and recurring costs when comparing proposals. Hardware, replacement equipment, capture staff or contracted capture, initial project setup, processing, connectivity, and ongoing platform or service charges can all contribute to the operating burden. The available product descriptions do not give a consistent price basis, so a feature list or advertised turnaround cannot stand in for a quote. Ask providers to price the intended project scope, including expected capture volume, number of areas, needed integrations, support, and any capture services.
Integration language also deserves careful checking. A vendor listing Primavera P6, MS Project, or Asta Powerproject as compatible does not by itself confirm that a particular schedule version, task structure, or project configuration will connect as expected. Ask for a demonstration using the kind of schedule and location mapping the team will maintain, and clarify whether data flows automatically or requires manual preparation.
Run a pilot before relying on automated reports
A pilot should test the complete workflow, not only whether the software can process an upload. Choose representative work areas and a period where the team can compare system observations with field verification. Include the kinds of visibility challenges the project actually has rather than selecting only easy, unobstructed views.
- Choose a bounded area and question. Define what progress output is useful and who will verify it.
- Agree on coverage and cadence. Specify capture method, route or viewpoints, responsible people, upload handling, and the repeat schedule.
- Provide the intended references. If testing schedule or model comparison, use the data and task structure the team expects to maintain. If testing imagery-first reporting, assess whether it provides enough context for the intended decision.
- Compare reports with site conditions. Check both observations and omissions against field conditions. Note occluded areas, missed work, confusing classifications, and differences in interpretation.
- Review the operating process. Determine whether capture, processing, review, and any integrations fit the project’s workflow and timing.
- Set acceptance criteria before expansion. Decide what level of coverage, review effort, reporting usefulness, and operating burden is acceptable for the intended use. The vendor pages do not establish a universal accuracy threshold.
If the system repeatedly misses relevant work, cannot be captured safely or consistently, or produces results that the team cannot map to its decisions, adjust the capture plan or reconsider the workflow before scaling it.
Why AI progress estimates can be wrong or incomplete
Computer vision interprets the images it receives. Occlusion, changing site conditions, camera position, and a dynamic scene can affect detection and tracking. A capture may miss an area, show a component before or after the relevant work, or make installed work difficult to distinguish. Repeated views can improve the usefulness of comparisons, but they do not remove the basic visibility limit.
A California Department of Transportation-hosted Mineta Transportation Institute report reviews these challenges and notes that some computer-vision construction progress-monitoring studies remain experimental and are not connected to construction-management applications. The report also mentions a 95.2% F1 score for one 2018 study’s BrickTree method on real-world data. That figure belongs to that particular method and study; it is not a general accuracy rating for current construction-progress products.

There is no established cross-vendor accuracy benchmark in the cited product descriptions. Avoid treating a vendor’s trade count, processing time, or product feature as an accuracy measure. The practical question is whether the system captures and interprets the specific work your team needs to monitor, under your site conditions, with a review process proportionate to the decision.
For the same reason, a high-looking completion percentage should be read with its scope in mind. Ask which area, trade, task, or captured view it describes, what evidence was available, and whether the platform marks uncertainty or missing coverage. A summary number without that context can conceal gaps in the underlying observation. Where a result affects payment, contractual reporting, or safety, retain the normal field documentation and approval steps alongside the visual output.
Common implementation mistakes to avoid
- Buying a camera before checking compatibility: Verify supported hardware and file handling with the chosen platform, then assess jobsite suitability.
- Using inconsistent coverage: If routes, viewpoints, or included areas change without being recorded, apparent differences may reflect capture conditions rather than progress.
- Expecting imagery to prove hidden work: Use field records and other project evidence for conditions the camera cannot show.
- Confusing a visual record with schedule verification: Confirm whether the tool actually connects observations to the schedule tasks and references the team needs.
- Scaling before validating: Pilot representative conditions, including difficult views, and verify observations before making the workflow part of high-impact decisions.
- Assuming advertised turnaround applies universally: Treat timing figures as vendor claims and confirm expected processing for the project’s capture volume and setup.
- Leaving ownership unclear: Assign responsibility for capture, upload, exception review, and field verification. If no one owns those steps, a technically successful report may arrive without anyone acting on it.
Choosing a 360-degree camera for construction progress tracking
A 360-degree camera can be useful when the workflow depends on repeated interior or ground-level walkthroughs. It is a capture device, not a complete tracking system: the platform must ingest the imagery and provide the analysis or reporting the project needs. DroneDeploy says Progress AI accepts 360 walks, and Doxel describes hardhat-mounted 360 capture, but support and mounting requirements are platform-specific.
Before choosing a model, check the software’s supported hardware list and capture workflow, the site’s safety requirements, how the camera will be mounted or carried, and whether the same areas can be recorded consistently. Do not infer a specific camera recommendation from the category alone; compatibility and site conditions determine the fit.
Plan the route as part of camera selection. The camera needs a practical way to cover the intended spaces without creating an unsafe task or an inconsistent record. Confirm how the platform handles uploaded 360 files, whether the capture path can be associated with locations, and what the team must do when a route is blocked or cannot be repeated. These workflow details matter as much as the camera’s ability to record a panoramic image.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I use AI to track construction progress?
Define the progress question, capture the site repeatedly with a suitable drone, 360-degree camera, fixed camera, or combination, and upload the imagery to a platform. Review the observations against the schedule, model, and field records as appropriate. Pilot a representative area first and verify important status in the field.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does construction progress tracking software require BIM?
Not always. DroneDeploy says its Progress AI can work without a BIM model or schedule; OpenSpace describes BIM as optional and schedule-connected tracking; Doxel describes comparing captured work with plans. Requirements depend on the product and the comparison you want, so confirm the specific workflow.

What does AI progress tracking actually measure?
Depending on the platform, it may report visible work-in-place by location, trade, component, system, stage, or schedule task. A time-stamped visual record is another possible output. These measures do not independently prove hidden work, quality, acceptance, or payment eligibility.
How often should a construction site be captured?
There is no universal interval established by the vendor descriptions. Choose a cadence based on when the team needs information, how quickly the work changes, and the time required to capture, upload, process, and review. Keep coverage repeatable so differences are easier to interpret.
How accurate is AI construction progress tracking?
There is no established cross-vendor accuracy benchmark in the product descriptions. Visibility, occlusion, camera position, and changing site conditions can affect results. Test the tool on representative work and compare both detected work and omissions with field conditions; do not generalize the 95.2% F1 score reported for one 2018 BrickTree study to current products.
How much does AI construction progress software cost?
The described options do not provide a consistent independent price comparison. Request a quote for the project’s scope and ask about equipment, trained or contracted capture, setup, processing, connectivity, integrations, and recurring service charges.
Can I use a 360-degree camera without progress-tracking software?
A 360-degree camera can capture a walkthrough, but the camera alone does not provide AI analysis or project reporting. Check the selected platform’s supported hardware and file workflow, then confirm that the capture approach is safe and repeatable on the site.
Can AI progress reports be used to approve payment or confirm safety?
Treat automated observations as decision support, not as standalone proof. Verify consequential status in the field and follow the project’s established contractual, payment, and safety review processes.
The Bottom Line
AI progress tracking is most useful when the team has a clear question, repeatable imagery, and a review process that connects observations to field conditions and project references. Compare capture fit, BIM and schedule requirements, report detail, turnaround, integrations, and total operating burden; pilot before scaling, and verify high-impact decisions in the field.
