Use an AI coding assistant as a bounded contributor inside your existing engineering process, not as an unsupervised programmer. The reliable pattern is: define one small behavior, provide the relevant context and acceptance criteria, generate a focused change, read the diff, run appropriate tests and security checks, obtain normal human review, and record what was accepted. AI output can look plausible while being wrong, insecure, incomplete, or inconsistent with your architecture, so compilation is only the beginning of quality assurance.

What “code quality” means when AI is involved

A change is high quality only when it satisfies the intended behavior and remains safe and maintainable in its real system. Review more than whether it builds.

  • Behavior: It handles normal inputs, boundaries, failures, retries, concurrency, and authorization as intended.
  • Security: It does not create injection, authentication, authorization, privacy, secret-management, or unsafe-deserialization problems.
  • Readability: Names, control flow, comments, and abstractions are understandable to the team that will maintain them.
  • Maintainability: The design fits local conventions, has useful tests, and does not create unnecessary coupling or technical debt.
  • Dependencies: New packages are justified, licensed acceptably, maintained, and free of known serious vulnerabilities.
  • Architectural fit: The change belongs in the correct layer and respects performance, data, deployment, and operational constraints.

An assistant can help with each of these questions, but its explanation is not evidence that its code is correct. GitHub’s responsible-use guidance warns that generated code and explanations may be inaccurate or incomplete.

Choose a task that is bounded enough to verify

Before opening a prompt, decide whether you can describe the desired behavior, inspect the resulting change, and test it within a reasonable review. If you cannot, split the work first.

Good starting tasks

  • Generate repetitive code that follows an existing pattern, such as serializers, adapters, or data-transfer mappings.
  • Draft tests alongside test-driven development, including ordinary cases and explicitly named edge cases.
  • Explain a function, query, error path, or unfamiliar configuration so you can investigate it faster.
  • Suggest edge cases for an existing implementation.
  • Propose a small refactor with a stated “must not change” behavior.
  • Convert a narrowly specified interface or data shape while preserving existing error semantics.

Tasks to postpone or decompose

  • “Redesign the authentication system” or another request spanning many components and unstated trade-offs.
  • Changes to payment, identity, cryptography, safety controls, permission boundaries, or regulated data without a domain expert involved.
  • Large migrations where the assistant cannot see operational dependencies, data quality, rollback plans, and production constraints.
  • Requests that ask for a result without defining acceptance criteria, supported versions, failure behavior, or compatibility requirements.

Ask for one behavior at a time and state what must remain unchanged. Inline suggestions are useful for completions, repetitive code, and test generation; chat-style requests are better for a specific explanation or a small, well-described change. Those are documented GitHub Copilot patterns, not rules that every assistant implements identically.

Give the assistant the context a reviewer would need

Specific requirements produce a smaller search space and an easier review. Include only the information needed for the task, and do not paste restricted data merely to make a prompt convenient.

Context checklist

  • Language, runtime, framework, and relevant version numbers.
  • File paths, symbols, interfaces, schemas, and the existing implementation that must be extended.
  • Local style and architectural conventions, such as error types, logging rules, dependency-injection patterns, and test structure.
  • Inputs, outputs, invariants, examples, expected errors, and performance or compatibility limits.
  • Explicit non-goals: files, APIs, permissions, database behavior, or public contracts that must not change.
  • Acceptance criteria that a reviewer can turn into tests or checks.

For example, instead of asking “make this endpoint safer,” specify the endpoint, authentication requirement, accepted input schema, maximum length, expected status codes, logging restrictions, and tests that should pass. Break a multi-file request into a sequence: first propose the design, then implement one module, then add tests, then make a separate migration.

A prompt pattern that keeps scope visible

Task: Add email-format validation to UserRegistration in src/users/registration.ts.
Context: TypeScript 5.x, existing errors use ValidationError, tests use Vitest.
Requirements: reject missing or malformed addresses; preserve current trimming behavior; do not change database schema or API status codes.
Acceptance criteria: add unit tests for valid, empty, whitespace-only, malformed, and internationalized examples; explain any new dependency before adding it.
Output: first describe the smallest patch, then show the changed code and tests.

The exact syntax is not important. The useful properties are a named location, constraints, examples, non-goals, and a testable result.

Use a repeatable six-step workflow

1. Decide the boundary and risk

Classify the change before generation. A documentation helper and a privilege-checking function should not receive the same level of autonomy. Identify affected data, users, permissions, external systems, and rollback options. For higher-risk work, plan a security or domain review before asking for code.

2. Request a proposal before a patch when design is unclear

Ask the assistant to list assumptions, affected files, alternatives, and open questions. Correct wrong assumptions while the change is still a plan. In a mature codebase, a short design proposal can reveal that an existing abstraction or utility should be reused instead of introducing another dependency.

3. Generate the smallest useful change

Ask for a focused patch rather than a wholesale rewrite. Keep unrelated formatting and renaming out of the diff. If the assistant proposes a new package, permission, network call, data store, or framework pattern, stop and evaluate it separately. The UK Home Office Engineering Guidance and Standards (SEGAS-00020, updated 20 March 2026) specifically calls for assessing security, licensing, maintainability, and architectural fit of AI-suggested dependencies and patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Read the implementation, not just the explanation

Inspect the actual diff line by line. Trace inputs through validation, authorization, state changes, logging, and error handling. Look for generated code that silently broadens behavior, catches and discards exceptions, trusts client-controlled fields, leaks sensitive values, performs unbounded work, or changes a public contract. Ask the assistant to explain an unfamiliar line, then verify the explanation against documentation and the code; fluency is not proof.

5. Verify behavior and risk

Run the project’s established controls locally or in continuous integration. Add tests for the intended behavior and the failure modes you identified. Select additional security techniques according to risk rather than mechanically running everything.

Control What it can reveal When it is especially useful
Unit, integration, and end-to-end tests Incorrect behavior, broken contracts, and integration regressions Every change, with depth matched to impact
Linting and type checking Style violations, unreachable paths, and type mismatches Every supported language or framework that provides these checks
Static code scanning Known insecure patterns and data-flow risks Changes involving input handling, permissions, secrets, or sensitive data
Dependency and license checks Known vulnerabilities, malicious packages, and licensing conflicts Any new or upgraded dependency
Secret detection Credentials or tokens accidentally committed or logged Changes touching configuration, CI, examples, or debugging output
Threat modeling Abuse cases and control gaps that tests may miss New trust boundaries, privileged operations, or exposed endpoints
Fuzzing and web-application scanning Unexpected parser, input, and protocol behavior Suitable parsers, public services, and high-risk input surfaces

NISTIR 8397 lists threat modeling, automated testing, static scanning, heuristic secret checks, black-box and structural tests, historical tests, fuzzing, and web-application scanning among verification techniques. It does not mean every edit requires every technique. Use the controls appropriate to the system and the change.

6. Review, approve, and record

Use the same peer-review and approval path as for human-written code. The change description should identify the intent, tests and scans run, important assumptions, and any AI assistance your policy requires you to record. A reviewer should be able to see what was generated, what was changed by a human, and why the final version was accepted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The UK Home Office standard states: “AI‑assisted outputs MUST be reviewed and approved by a human before reaching production.” It also says: “All AI‑assisted changes must be tested in line with existing engineering standards such as the Developer Testing standard and the QAT principles before being merged or deployed.” These are rules for that organization, not a universal legal requirement, but they are a clear model for visible human ownership.

Test the behavior the prompt did not mention

Generated code commonly follows the happy-path example while omitting conditions that were implicit in the surrounding system. Derive tests from the contract, not only from the assistant’s output.

Input and state cases

  • Empty, null, oversized, duplicated, malformed, and boundary-value inputs.
  • Unexpected encoding, locale, time zone, precision, ordering, and daylight-saving transitions where relevant.
  • Retries, timeouts, partial failures, concurrent updates, and repeated requests.
  • Missing records, stale versions, revoked permissions, and deleted resources.
  • Malformed responses and outages from every external service the change calls.

Security cases

  • Inputs containing SQL, shell, template, HTML, path, or log-injection payloads, using the project’s safe APIs and expected encoding.
  • Requests from unauthenticated users, users with the wrong role, and users attempting to access another tenant’s data.
  • Secrets in source, test fixtures, stack traces, telemetry, and error messages.
  • Resource-exhaustion attempts, such as very large files, deeply nested data, or unbounded pagination.

Keep tests close to the intended behavior and make failures diagnostic. A test that merely confirms the generated implementation’s current output can preserve a bug instead of detecting it.

Protect data, dependencies, and permissions

Do not send sensitive, personal, classified, proprietary, or otherwise restricted information to an assistant unless your organization’s policy explicitly approves that use. Redact values, use representative fixtures, and check retention and training terms for the specific service approved by your organization. The UK Home Office standard requires its teams to use approved tools; other organizations may use different allowlists and data rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review every suggested dependency as if a human had proposed it during design review. Check its source, version, maintenance, license, transitive dependencies, permissions, and update path. Prefer an existing, approved library when it satisfies the requirement. Treat generated shell commands, infrastructure changes, database migrations, and CI modifications as executable instructions: inspect them before running them.

Use stricter controls for autonomous coding agents

An agent that can edit files, run commands, open pull requests, or access services has a larger failure radius than an inline completion tool. Keep these controls separate from ordinary autocomplete guidance:

  1. Give the agent the minimum repository, branch, filesystem, network, and credential permissions needed for the task.
  2. Preserve branch protections, required status checks, code-owner review, and deployment approvals.
  3. Run commands in an isolated environment and prohibit access to production credentials unless a documented procedure requires it.
  4. Inspect the complete session, tool calls, generated diff, dependency changes, and test output.
  5. Require a human to review and approve the pull request before merge or deployment.

GitHub’s documentation for its cloud agent says that the service checks generated code with CodeQL, checks newly introduced dependencies against the GitHub Advisory Database for malware advisories and high- or critical-CVSS vulnerabilities, and uses secret scanning by default. Those are documented controls for that product and may change; they do not remove the need for your repository’s own required checks and human review. Draft pull requests still require human review before merging.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

A 2024 qualitative study by Klemmer and colleagues examined interviews with 27 software professionals and 190 relevant Reddit posts and comments. Participants reported using assistants for security-critical activities despite security and quality concerns, and described checking suggestions similarly to human-written code. The sample sizes describe that study’s methods; they are not a representative survey and do not establish a population-wide defect rate or a universal effect on code quality.

The practical conclusion is narrower and more defensible: assistants change where engineering effort is spent. Typing may become faster, while specification, verification, security review, and maintenance remain necessary. Teams should collect their own outcome measures rather than repeating unsupported claims about guaranteed productivity or vulnerability rates.

The patch adds a surprising dependency

Remove it and ask for a standard-library or existing-library solution. If a new package is justified, route it through normal security, license, maintenance, and architecture review.

Tests mirror the implementation

Rewrite assertions from the external behavior and threat model. Include boundary and misuse cases that the generated code did not use as examples.

A fluent explanation hides uncertainty

Ask the assistant to list assumptions and cite the exact symbol or requirement supporting each one. Verify those claims in source, tests, and authoritative documentation; treat unresolved assumptions as review blockers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restricted data was pasted into a prompt

Stop sharing it, follow your incident or data-handling procedure, rotate exposed secrets when applicable, and replace the example with redacted or synthetic data. Clarify which tools and data classes are approved before continuing.

An autonomous agent changed too much

Discard or revert the broad patch, restore a protected branch, and restart with a narrow task and explicit file boundaries. Require a draft pull request and human approval before any merge.

A pull-request checklist for AI-assisted changes

  • The task, non-goals, assumptions, and acceptance criteria are written down.
  • The diff is limited to the requested behavior and uses existing abstractions where possible.
  • Every changed line is understood by the author or reviewer.
  • Tests cover normal, boundary, failure, authorization, and relevant security cases.
  • Linting, type checks, static analysis, secret detection, dependency checks, and other risk-appropriate scans pass.
  • New dependencies, licenses, permissions, data flows, and operational effects are explicitly reviewed.
  • No restricted data, credentials, or proprietary source was sent to an unapproved tool.
  • Branch protections, required checks, and normal peer approval remain in force.
  • AI assistance is recorded when organizational policy requires traceability.
  • A named human owns the final decision to merge or deploy.

The Bottom Line

AI coding assistants improve code quality only when they shorten mechanical work without shortening engineering judgment. Keep requests small, provide precise context, inspect every diff, test behavior and security risk, and require visible human approval before release.
