Use an AI coding assistant as a constrained, reviewable contributor—not as an autonomous maintainer. Give it the smallest repository and tool access that can complete a clearly defined task, require a plan before broad edits, inspect every changed line, run the project’s tests and security checks, and keep a human approval step for credentials, external systems, releases, and important branches.
This matters because generated code can contain bugs, insecure patterns, or outdated APIs. Repository files, issue text, documentation, and fixtures can also contain hostile instructions that try to redirect an agent. The safe approach is to control access and actions, protect sensitive context, and preserve the same engineering and security process you would use for code written by a person.
What “safe” means in an existing codebase
Safety is not a setting that makes generated code trustworthy. It is a workflow that limits blast radius and catches mistakes before they reach users. A useful definition has four parts:
- Confidentiality: secrets, private code, customer data, and internal credentials are not unnecessarily sent to a model or exposed through tool output.
- Integrity: the assistant cannot silently rewrite unrelated files, alter protected branches, change infrastructure, or publish an unreviewed result.
- Correctness: the patch satisfies the requested behavior, fits the existing architecture, and passes the repository’s tests and quality checks.
- Accountability: a person can see what the assistant read and changed, understand consequential actions, and approve or reject them.
OpenAI describes coding-agent controls such as access boundaries, approvals for higher-risk actions, and telemetry in its May 8, 2026 account of how Codex is run safely. Those are examples of controls, not capabilities that every assistant provides automatically. When comparing products, verify what your edition and organization settings actually enforce. OpenAI’s description of agent safety controls explains the distinction.

GitHub’s responsible-use guidance is similarly direct: “You should always review and test the code generated by Copilot Chat to ensure that it meets your requirements and is free of errors or security concerns.” Treat that as a minimum standard for any assistant, regardless of vendor. GitHub’s responsible-use guidance also says generated output should fit the project’s architecture and style.
Why generated code needs ordinary engineering controls
It can be plausible and still be wrong
An assistant may produce code that compiles while mishandling authorization, validation, error paths, concurrency, migrations, or edge cases. It may call an outdated API, copy an insecure pattern, or infer a requirement that was never agreed. Public examples can contain bugs and vulnerabilities; GitHub warns that generated suggestions may include insecure patterns, errors, or outdated APIs. GitHub’s product guidance recommends testing, review, and security tools rather than accepting output on appearance.
Context can contain instructions you did not write
Agents often read more than source files: issue descriptions, pull-request comments, README files, test fixtures, generated logs, and web responses can all become context. A malicious string in one of those sources may tell the agent to reveal a secret, disable a check, upload a file, or perform an unrelated change. OpenAI calls this pattern prompt injection: third-party content attempts to mislead an agent. OpenAI’s prompt-injection guidance recommends limiting access, using specific instructions, and checking important actions; it does not promise that injection can always be prevented.

A clean automated check is not a safety verdict
Tests and scanners are valuable additional controls, but they cover only the cases they know about. GitHub describes security validation for its cloud agent while still recommending secure coding and human review. A green build therefore means “the checked conditions passed,” not “the change is safe in every context.”
Prepare the repository before asking for a change
Find the project’s own rules
Start by locating contribution instructions, architecture documentation, coding standards, test commands, dependency policies, threat models, and release rules. Look for repository-level agent instructions as well as team documentation. Establish which directories are generated, which files are owned by another system, and which branches require review.
Give the assistant only the instructions and files needed for the task. If the change could affect several subsystems, ask for an inspection and written plan before permitting edits. This follows the principle in OpenAI’s agent-safety guidance of defining boundaries and treating higher-risk actions explicitly, and GitHub’s recommendation to scope cloud-agent tasks and limit available tools. OpenAI’s agent-control discussion and GitHub’s cloud-agent risk guidance describe these controls.
Define a clean starting point
Use a dedicated branch or isolated worktree. Record the base commit, confirm that the working tree is clean, and make sure the test suite is runnable before involving the assistant. If the repository already has failing tests, record those failures so they cannot be mistaken for regressions introduced by the generated patch.
Decide what the assistant may touch
Write down the allowed directories, files, commands, network destinations, and integrations. A read-only exploration phase is safer than granting write access immediately. If the tool supports separate permissions, keep source inspection and editing distinct from command execution, issue updates, pull-request creation, deployment, or package publishing.

Write a request that is narrow enough to review
A strong request describes one behavior, its boundaries, and the evidence that will demonstrate success. Include:
- The bug or feature in observable terms.
- The files or subsystem in scope, if known.
- Behavior that must remain unchanged.
- Constraints such as supported language versions, public API compatibility, performance limits, or dependency rules.
- Required tests and the command that should run.
- A requirement to explain assumptions, changed files, risks, and test results.
For example, instead of “clean up authentication,” ask: “In the password-reset handler, reject expired tokens with the existing error type, preserve the response shape, add tests for expired and reused tokens, and do not change database schema or dependencies. First inspect the handler and related tests, then propose a plan; do not edit until the plan is approved.”
Explicit instructions reduce the opportunity for unrelated content to redirect the agent. GitHub’s cloud-agent guidance also recommends well-scoped tasks. Read the guidance on task scope and mitigations.

Protect secrets and sensitive code context
Never put credentials in a prompt
Do not paste passwords, API keys, private tokens, signing material, session cookies, production connection strings, or private customer records into a chat. Redact values in logs and configuration examples. If a task needs a secret at runtime, use the repository’s approved secret store and a controlled test environment rather than exposing the value to the model.
Check the product and account terms
Before sending proprietary source, regulated data, or internal design documents, check the specific assistant’s current product terms, retention controls, training settings, enterprise agreement, and organizational policy. There is no single data-handling rule that applies to every coding assistant or account tier. GitHub notes that repository context sent to a model can include sensitive information and that generated responses can create security concerns. Use the current GitHub responsible-use documentation alongside your organization’s policy.
Minimize context deliberately
Prefer a small set of relevant files over an entire monorepo. Exclude secret files, production exports, personal data, and unrelated repositories from indexing where the product allows it. Ask the assistant to state which files it used. If it requests a surprising file, stop and determine why it is necessary before granting access.
Set permissions and approval gates
For an agentic assistant, evaluate each capability separately. The following matrix is a practical baseline:
| Capability | Safer default | When to permit more | Human check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repository reading | Only the repository and directories required for the task | When architecture or shared types genuinely require broader context | Confirm the scope and exclude sensitive paths |
| File writing | Isolated branch or worktree; limited paths | After the plan is accepted and the patch is bounded | Review the complete diff |
| Command execution | Read-only inspection and local tests without network access | Specific commands needed for formatting, tests, or builds | Approve commands that delete, migrate, install, or modify state |
| Network access | Disabled | Allowlisted hosts only when dependency or API inspection requires it | Check destinations and transmitted data |
| Credentials and integrations | Unavailable | Only through a controlled, least-privilege mechanism | Explicit approval for every consequential action |
| Branches and releases | No protected-branch push, merge, deploy, or publish | After required review and automated gates pass | A designated maintainer approves the action |
OpenAI describes technical boundaries and explicit approval for higher-risk actions, while GitHub recommends limiting tools available to cloud-agent tasks. These sources support the control pattern, not a universal list of product features. OpenAI’s agent-control example and GitHub’s risks and mitigations provide the source context.

A safe end-to-end workflow
1. Establish the baseline
- Check out the intended base branch in an isolated branch or worktree.
- Run the project’s normal tests, formatter, linter, type checker, dependency audit, secret scanner, and other required checks.
- Record existing failures, tool versions, and the commit identifier.
- Confirm that no credentials or production data are present in files the assistant can read.
2. Ask for inspection and a plan
Give the assistant the narrow task and repository rules. Ask it to identify relevant files, summarize the current behavior, propose the smallest change, list assumptions, and name tests it will add or run. Do not authorize edits if the plan includes unrelated cleanup, dependency upgrades, broad refactoring, or access outside the stated scope.
3. Approve a bounded implementation
Allow edits only in the agreed paths. Require the assistant to stop when it encounters an ambiguous requirement, a request for a secret, an external integration, or a destructive command. Review proposed shell commands before execution, especially commands that remove files, rewrite history, install packages, alter databases, or contact external services.
4. Inspect the diff, not just the summary
Read every changed line and the surrounding code. Check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Input validation, authorization, output encoding, and error handling.
- Use of safe defaults, least privilege, and constant-time or correctly scoped operations where relevant.
- Compatibility with the project’s architecture, conventions, language version, and public interfaces.
- Concurrency, retries, transactions, resource cleanup, and failure behavior.
- New dependencies, lockfile changes, licenses, and transitive risk.
- Accidental secrets, debug logging, telemetry, data exports, or unrelated file edits.
Ask the assistant to explain a line when useful, but verify the explanation against source, documentation, and tests. Its explanation is not an independent review.
5. Run the repository’s checks
- Run focused unit and integration tests for the changed behavior.
- Run the complete required test suite when practical, including regression tests.
- Run formatting, linting, type checking, static analysis, dependency checks, and secret scanning required by the project.
- Add tests for boundary cases and negative paths, not only the happy path.
- Compare results with the recorded baseline and investigate every new failure.
GitHub specifically recommends testing, code review, and security tools for generated code. Its responsible-use documentation explains that these controls remain necessary even when an assistant proposes or evaluates the code.
6. Review in the normal delivery process
Open the ordinary pull request with a concise description of the behavior, files changed, tests run, known limitations, and any assistant involvement your policy requires. Have a maintainer review it under the same rules as human-written code. Keep deployment, merge, release, and production-migration approvals with the people designated by your team.
Recognize and contain prompt injection
Prompt injection is not limited to a chat message that says “ignore previous instructions.” It can be hidden in a markdown file, an issue copied from an external tracker, a test fixture, a generated error message, a dependency README, or a web page returned by a tool. The content may look authoritative because it is phrased as a repository rule.
Warning signs
- A file asks the assistant to reveal environment variables, tokens, hidden prompts, or unrelated source.
- Instructions tell it to disable tests, bypass review, change its task, or upload data.
- The assistant proposes network access or credentials that the task does not require.
- A request appears only in third-party content and conflicts with your explicit task.
- The agent suddenly edits files outside the agreed scope or reports actions you did not approve.
Response procedure
- Stop the agent and revoke unnecessary tool permissions.
- Preserve the suspicious content and the session or command log for investigation.
- Classify the text as untrusted data, not as a repository instruction.
- Restart from a clean worktree with a narrower context and explicit task statement.
- Review whether any data was exposed or any command ran, then rotate affected credentials and follow your incident process if necessary.
OpenAI’s guidance recommends limiting access, giving specific instructions, and checking important actions; GitHub identifies injection as a risk for cloud agents and discusses tool limits and validation as mitigations. OpenAI’s prompt-injection explanation and GitHub’s mitigation guidance describe the threat without claiming perfect prevention.

Compare assistants by controls, not by “safe” marketing
If you are choosing between assistants or deployment modes, compare the workflow you can actually enforce. A generic safety label does not reveal the important boundaries.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to require |
|---|---|---|
| Access scope | Can it read only one repository? Can it see local files, secrets, other repositories, or customer data? | Documented path restrictions, organization settings, and an observable permission model |
| Action control | Are read, write, command, network, branch, and deployment actions separate? Are approvals required? | Permission screens, approval prompts, audit logs, and protected-branch enforcement |
| Data handling | What context is transmitted? What are the retention, training, residency, and enterprise controls for this account? | Current terms and settings for the exact product and plan; do not infer from another tier |
| Validation and review | Does the workflow run tests and security checks, show a complete diff, and record actions? | CI integration, logs, security validation, and a required human checkpoint |
| Engineering fit | Can it follow your code review, testing, dependency, and release process? | A pilot on a low-risk repository using your real gates and policies |
The available official guidance supports these comparison dimensions but does not establish a current vendor ranking or prove that one assistant is universally safest. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure modes and fixes
The assistant changes too much
Symptom: a small bug fix produces formatting churn, unrelated refactoring, or edits across many packages.
Fix: revert to the clean baseline, narrow the allowed paths, restate the behavior and non-goals, and request a minimal patch. Review the plan before enabling writes again.
Tests pass but the behavior is insecure
Symptom: existing tests are green, but authorization, input handling, logging, or dependency use is unsafe.
Fix: add security-specific tests and perform a manual threat review. Run the project’s static analysis, dependency, and secret-scanning tools. Compare the implementation with established secure-coding patterns rather than relying on the assistant’s confidence.
The agent asks for a secret or broad network access
Symptom: it requests an environment variable, production endpoint, package registry credential, or unrestricted browsing for a local change.

Repository content redirects the task
Symptom: an issue, README, fixture, or generated output tells the assistant to reveal data or perform unrelated work.
Fix: treat the content as untrusted, stop the run, inspect logs, and restart with a smaller context and stricter permissions. Do not copy the embedded instruction into your trusted task rules.
The assistant reports tests that were not run
Symptom: the response says “all tests pass,” but there is no command output or the command does not match the repository’s required suite.

A practical approval checklist
Before accepting an assistant-generated change, confirm each item:
- The task had a defined scope, non-goals, and success criteria.
- The assistant could access only the repository content, commands, network, and integrations it needed.
- No credentials, personal data, or production secrets were placed in prompts or logs.
- The starting commit and pre-existing failures were recorded.
- The complete diff was read, including dependency and generated-file changes.
- Architecture, style, compatibility, error handling, authorization, and untrusted-input paths were checked.
- Focused tests, regression tests, and required static, dependency, and secret checks were run.
- Any suspicious repository instruction or unexpected action was investigated as possible prompt injection.
- A designated reviewer approved the change before merge, release, deployment, or production migration.
This checklist preserves the controls emphasized by OpenAI and GitHub: bounded access, explicit treatment of higher-risk actions, resistance to prompt injection, testing, secure coding, and human review. It also keeps the assistant in the role it can safely occupy—a fast source of drafts and suggestions inside an accountable engineering process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I let an AI assistant merge or deploy its own code?
Keep merge, deployment, release, and production-migration permissions behind a designated human approval. Even when automated checks pass, they do not establish that the change is safe in every operational context.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I trust an assistant to review code that it generated?
Use its explanation or second-pass review as an additional signal, not as an independent control. The same model can miss the assumptions or security flaw that produced the original error; require ordinary human review and repository checks.
What should I do if an assistant follows instructions found in a README or issue?
Stop the run, revoke unnecessary permissions, preserve the suspicious content and logs, assess possible exposure, and restart from a clean worktree with a narrower context. Treat third-party repository text as data, not as trusted instructions.
Is there one universal data-retention policy for coding assistants?
No. Retention, training, residency, and access terms depend on the specific product, account tier, organization settings, and agreement. Check the current terms and policy for the account that will receive your code.
