To use a Wi-Fi extender with a wired connection, the exact model and hardware revision must support Access Point (AP) mode with Ethernet as its uplink. Connect the extender’s Ethernet port to a LAN port on your router or another suitable upstream network device, then select AP mode in the extender’s setup interface. An Ethernet jack by itself does not confirm that an extender supports this configuration.

What changes when an extender runs in Access Point mode?

Many devices sold as range extenders repeat an existing Wi-Fi signal by default. In AP mode, a supported extender uses Ethernet to connect to the existing network and broadcasts Wi-Fi for nearby phones, computers, and other clients. The wired connection replaces the wireless link between the router and the extender.

That difference can matter when the area needing Wi-Fi is reachable by Ethernet: the AP does not have to rely on a wireless connection back to the router. However, the manufacturer setup pages cited here do not provide controlled performance tests, so they do not establish a universal speed gain, coverage percentage, or roaming outcome.

Check compatibility before connecting anything

Look up the extender’s exact model and hardware revision in its official specifications and manual. Confirm both that it supports AP mode and that Ethernet serves as the network uplink in that mode. Manufacturers document support for particular models or product families, and features can vary even among devices with Ethernet ports. See NETGEAR’s access-point setup guidance, TP-Link’s extender instructions, and ASUS’s model-dependent guidance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Verify the hardware revision as well as the model name; manuals may cover only specific revisions.
  • Confirm that the manual describes Ethernet-fed AP mode, not merely an Ethernet port for connecting a wired client.
  • Check what functions change in AP mode. For the ASUS range extenders covered by its instructions, firewall, IP sharing, and NAT functions are disabled by default.

If the manual does not explicitly confirm Ethernet uplink in AP mode, do not assume the feature is supported.

Connect and configure the extender

  1. Choose a reachable location. Place the extender where it can provide Wi-Fi to the area you want to serve and where the Ethernet run from the router or upstream LAN can reach. There is no universal placement formula in the cited setup guidance.
  2. Connect the Ethernet cable. Run a cable from a LAN port on the main router, or another suitable upstream network device, to the extender’s Ethernet port. NETGEAR specifies a router LAN port; TP-Link describes connecting to the router or another upstream device for Internet access.
  3. Power on and open the documented setup interface. Follow the method for your exact model. For example, NETGEAR’s instructions use the NETGEAR_EXT network and installation assistant. TP-Link documents setup through its Tether app or a web interface.
  4. Select AP mode. If the extender is not already in that mode, choose Access Point mode and follow the on-screen prompts. In TP-Link’s documented examples, the Tether path is More > Operation mode; in the web interface it is Advanced > System Tools > Operation Mode. These are model-specific examples, not universal menu paths.
  5. Set Wi-Fi details and test the connection. Choose a Wi-Fi name and password if prompted. After setup completes and the device reboots if requested, connect a phone or laptop to the Wi-Fi and check that it can access the network.

Menu names and setup procedures vary by model. Use the manual for your exact hardware revision if a label, app screen, or setup prompt differs from these examples. TP-Link’s extender AP-mode instructions document optional Wi-Fi name and password changes.

AP mode or wireless repeater mode?

Configuration Connection back to the existing network When it fits
Access Point mode Ethernet cable The location needing Wi-Fi has a suitable wired connection, and the extender supports Ethernet-fed AP mode.
Wireless repeater mode Wi-Fi A wired connection is unavailable and the extender supports repeating the existing wireless network.

The main practical distinction is the uplink: Ethernet for AP mode and Wi-Fi for repeater mode. No universal speed comparison is established by the cited manufacturer setup pages, so choose based on the connection available and the features your model supports.

What AP mode may disable or change

AP mode changes which networking functions the device handles. ASUS says firewall, IP sharing, and NAT are disabled by default on the range extenders covered by its AP-mode instructions. Other devices can differ, so consult the model’s manual for feature behavior rather than assuming every extender works the same way.

Do not generalize limitations from other product categories to range extenders. For example, TP-Link lists unavailable features for Deco systems in Deco AP mode; that guidance is specific to that product category.

If your extender does not support Ethernet-fed AP mode

Do not treat a physical Ethernet jack as proof of AP-mode support. Consider a dedicated access point, an extender whose manual explicitly documents Ethernet-fed AP mode, or a router configured as an access point. Compare the exact wired-uplink support, Wi-Fi bands and standards, wired-port capability, management features, and compatibility with your existing network. The cited pages do not establish a current cross-brand ranking or prices.

For a router configured as an access point, follow that router’s instructions; its setup process is separate from the extender steps above. ASUS ROG’s router AP setup guidance states that Ethernet RJ45 cables used to connect network devices should not exceed 100 meters. Treat that as the page’s stated limit, not a target for a household cable run: ASUS ROG router AP setup.
