You can use a VPN on a smart TV if its operating system supports the provider’s app. Android TV and Google TV users can usually install an app directly; Samsung Tizen and LG webOS owners generally need a VPN-compatible router or a separate streaming device with a supported VPN app. Choose based on your TV’s exact model and operating system, and whether you want to protect just the TV or devices across your home network.
Which VPN setup fits your smart TV?
Start by checking the TV’s operating system and the app store available on that model. A provider’s list of supported platforms is a useful guide, but it does not guarantee that an app is available for every model or OS version. Confirm compatibility with both the device maker and VPN provider before subscribing.

If your TV’s app store offers your VPN provider’s official app, installing it is usually the simplest route. The exact labels and menus vary by device.

- Open the TV’s app store, such as Google Play Store.
- Search for the VPN provider’s official app and install it.
- Open the app and sign in to your account.
- Choose a server location and connect.
- Confirm that the app reports an active connection before opening the streaming app you want to use.
ExpressVPN’s setup guide covers Android 7.0 and later and provides a sideloading route if the app is unavailable in the Play Store. NordVPN also documents Play Store and APK installation. If you sideload, use only the provider’s official download source; ExpressVPN discourages third-party APK sources. Refer to ExpressVPN’s Android TV setup guide and NordVPN’s Android TV instructions.
What to do on Samsung Tizen or LG webOS
The provider guidance cited here does not list native VPN apps for Samsung Tizen or LG webOS. If you want an encrypted VPN connection for one of these TVs, the best-supported route in these sources is a VPN-compatible router. Router setup applies to devices connected through it, but configuration varies by router model and can be more involved than installing an app. Check your router’s documentation and VPN provider’s instructions before changing its settings.

Another option is to connect a supported streaming device to the TV and run the VPN app there. This avoids configuring the router, but the VPN connection applies to that streaming device, not the TV’s other network traffic or the rest of your home network.
DNS-based features are not substitutes for an encrypted VPN tunnel. ExpressVPN says its MediaStreamer service uses DNS-based routing and does not encrypt traffic or mask your IP address. NordVPN publishes LG SmartDNS setup instructions, but menus can vary by TV model; consult NordVPN’s LG SmartDNS guide. A DNS-only setup may help with routing, but it does not provide VPN privacy. ExpressVPN explains its MediaStreamer feature at its MediaStreamer support page.

Use a streaming device when the TV has no VPN app
A compatible Fire TV Stick or Android TV box can add an app-based VPN route to a TV whose built-in system lacks a supported app. Connect the device to the TV, install the VPN app from its app store, sign in, and connect to a server. NordVPN also lists Chromecast with Google TV among supported streaming boxes. Confirm the precise device generation and current OS support with the VPN provider; compatibility can change.
This approach is useful when you want to avoid router configuration, but it requires an additional device and protects only that device’s traffic. It does not automatically cover other devices connected to your home network.

Share a VPN connection through a Windows hotspot
If you already have a Windows computer, a VPN-protected Wi-Fi hotspot is another possible fallback. You will need the computer to remain available as the connection source, and the TV must be able to join its Wi-Fi network. Follow the VPN provider’s current Windows hotspot instructions; settings can differ by Windows version.
Check the provider’s feature status before using Smart DNS
VPN features and supported platforms can change. Do not rely on older setup directions for a feature the provider no longer offers. Check the provider’s current support information before choosing a DNS-based setup.

Choose by coverage and setup effort—not unverified speed claims
- Choose a native app when your exact TV model supports one and you want the most direct setup.
- Choose router configuration when you need an encrypted VPN connection for multiple devices and your router supports it.
- Choose a streaming device when the TV lacks an app and you want an app-based solution without configuring the router.
- Consider a Windows hotspot if you already have a suitable computer and need a workaround.
- Do not treat Smart DNS as a VPN if your goal is traffic encryption or IP masking.
The cited provider materials do not establish independent, comparable TV streaming speed results or confirm access to particular streaming catalogs. A provider’s server count or platform list is not a measured comparison of streaming performance.
